Breakdancing Is Now an Olympic Sport, But the Hip-Hop Community of Paris Is Skeptical

"An expansive multipurpose cultural center in the heart of the 19th arrondissement of Paris. It offers public performances, concerts, workshops, talks, exhibitions, and festivals throughout the year. It is known for its welcoming atmosphere where artists of various disciplines, including dancers, gather to practice and perform."

The Centquatre-Paris (104) is one of the most original and vibrant cultural spaces in the city, and a visit here is always inspiring. Housed in a former municipal funeral service building, it has been transformed into a hub of creativity where art, innovation, and community life come together. The architecture alone is worth the trip, with its vast open halls, industrial charm, and light-filled spaces that give a sense of both grandeur and accessibility. What makes Centquatre so special is its diversity. You’ll find contemporary art exhibitions, dance rehearsals, theater performances, concerts, and even street art, all coexisting under one roof. The programming is daring, eclectic, and inclusive, welcoming both internationally renowned artists and emerging talents. It’s a place where boundaries between disciplines dissolve, and visitors are invited to engage with art in new and exciting ways. Beyond the cultural offerings, Centquatre is also a lively community spot. Locals come here to skate, practice hip-hop dance, or simply hang out with friends. Families with children will appreciate the open and welcoming atmosphere. There are also cafés, bookshops, and creative shops that make the visit even more enjoyable. Centquatre isn’t just a venue—it’s a living, breathing cultural ecosystem, full of energy and imagination.

Huge place for practicing movement arts and meet like-minded people. excellent ground for dancing and moving as well. might be a bit crowded sometimes and I would recommend headphones, but still great experience!

Amazing space for art exhibitions and dance. The entrance there is free (for training or dancing or just taking a look) but expositions are not free so better check online to get your tickets in advance so can do both :)

An amazing cultural space in Paris! The venue is huge! You can find arts, expos, a restaurant, second hand shops for the good cause, people rehearsing for their art performance, people dancing!! The vibe it there is really gorgeous. It’s definitely worth a visit. Went for the numeric art expo, only slight drawback is that there’s several rooms and you have to queue for each room.

104 is a breath of fresh air! An exceptional cultural hub where arts and talents intertwine seamlessly - from theater to dance, music to visual arts. It's a melting pot of diverse populations and instruments, a true testament to Paris's vibrancy. The future undoubtedly unfolds here. I've encountered few places worldwide as inspiring.

An amazing space of art and dance. You can go there for free just to train in dancing, or to visit the amazing expositions - not for free - or to drink something - not for free either. Oh there's also a book library. By the way, this place made history and requalified the area, even if it's still a mess.

Yelp
A cross between a cultural lounge, sports arena, dance studio and day-care center, the 104 rocks (especially if you've got kids in Paris and are looking for a cool place to let them run around while you soak up the scenery). After a lackluster opening a couple of years back, the 104 has finally come into its own and is bursting at the seems with coolitude. On a recent visit we did the follow incongruous but totally awesome things: - Watched a slew of hip hoppers practice their break dancing in the central atrium - Drink coffee that we ordered from a stationary pizza truck - Take videos of ourselves running around like fools without giving a hoot - Walk through a maze of ribbons - Hang out in a day care center with a dozen or so other parents while watching our kid run and play in a totally safe space. Might I add that all of this was FREE! Yes, they have paid exhibitions at the space too, but honestly you could make an afternoon out of 104 without spending a dime. This is the type of place that makes you fall in love with France all over again.

Yelp
Great artistic, cultural center. Go for the bookstore, go for the restaurant, fo for the exhibition (I attended Serge Bloch's), go to watch people dancing, juggle, perform. Just go. You are guaranteed an absolutely fantastic time!
