Opulent rooms in historical themes, ocean views, fine dining, cocktails

"For those seeking privacy, this stately home sits directly at the head of Newport’s legendary Cliff Walk and offers just 20 individually designed rooms, each styled in a different period from Tudor to Colonial. Some rooms add private hot tubs, others fireplaces or saunas, and all feature thoughtful details like heated floors, heated towel racks, and unbelievably plush beds you’ll never want to leave. Dining is a highlight thanks to the 2025 addition of Remy’s Loose, an energetic, modern concept that speaks to contemporary travelers and old-guard Newporters alike. Service ranks among the best in town, with curated experiences from in-room massages to private boat charters, and a staff that remembers your name whether it’s your first stay or your fifth." - Todd Plummer

"After sitting in traffic from Boston or New York, turning into the Chanler at Cliff Walk's impressive gates immediately transported me to the Gilded Age: an unbeatable location abutting Newport's famed Cliff Walk, an award-winning fine-dining restaurant, and plenty of quiet privacy despite being close to the action. The Chanler's setting is perfectly balanced—just steps from the Cliff Walk's northern terminus, a short walk to Easton's Beach, and about a mile from downtown—and the property even offers a chauffeured Cadillac to ferry you to and fro." - Charlie Hobbs

"Newport has a long history of catering to the country’s upper-crust—and you likely would have bumped into a Vanderbilt at The Chanler at Cliff Walk in the late 1800s. Once known as Cliff Lawn, this gilded age manor house was built in 1873 for John Winthrop Chanler and his wife, Margaret Astor Ward, great-granddaughter of the famed businessman and millionaire John Jacob Astor. Later, it served as a school for girls and the summer home of a bishop until finally reopening in 2003 as The Chanler. Rooms are decorated in the styles of different historical periods, each more extravagant than the next. Our favorite is the Martha’s Vineyard villa, an ocean-view beauty with a mantled fireplace, two prim blue chairs, and a full-canopied four-poster king bed with an intricately carved wooden frame as the focal point. There's a reason—or ten—why this place has often been voted the most romantic hotel in America. A new restaurant, Cara, made its debut in July 2018 under chef Matt Voskuil."
