The Charlee Hotel is, in many ways, a near-perfect base for exploring Medellín. Its location could not be better — perched right in the heart of El Poblado, surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and nightlife, yet with enough elevation and glass to give you a sense of retreat once you’re inside. The decor is striking without being overbearing, stylishly modern with a touch of tropical flair. The rooms are well appointed, the amenities plentiful, and the bathroom deserves special mention: expansive, thoughtfully designed, and anchored by a shower that is nothing short of glorious. For the price, it all represents very good value.||But then comes the human factor. On Thursday at 1 p.m., I encountered a front desk employee whose approach to service was so astonishingly inept that it managed to overshadow the otherwise strong impression of the hotel. My check-in was not just inefficient, but downright uncomfortable — a brusque, careless process that left me wondering whether I had inadvertently trespassed into a private club rather than arriving at a property that touts itself on hospitality. I left that counter feeling unwelcome, and for the rest of my stay, I did my best to steer clear of him entirely.||It is a shame, because The Charlee has all the ingredients to be extraordinary. Great location, great design, and genuinely good value for money. One staff member should not define an entire property — and I trust that my experience was the exception, not the rule. But in the hospitality business, the first impression matters immensely, and mine was, unfortunately, the worst check-in experience of my life.||Would I recommend The Charlee? Yes, with reservations (in both senses of the word). If management addresses the weak link at the front desk, this hotel could easily move from “good” to “very good".
