Art Series - The Chen (Box Hill, Victoria) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Each of the Art Series hotels is dedicated to the work of an individual artist, and the Chen, in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill, is devoted to Zhong Chen, a Chinese-born Pop-influenced painter who’s spent the last three decades in Australia. The hotel occupies five floors of the high-rise Whitehorse Towers development, which makes for impressively far-ranging views from its 100 chic, colorful suites. In addition to a number of restaurants in the Whitehorse Towers, the hotel features its own: Golden Lily, a Chinese restaurant serving upscale Cantonese fare supplemented by Shanghai and Sichuan dishes." - Tablet Hotels

The Chen is a nice and comfortable hotel. Train station just at next door. The rooms are clean, modern, and well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and responsive. We had an enjoyable stay overall. However, we had to request drinking water from the reception as it wasn’t provided in the room. In addition, as a big group, we couldn’t get rooms next to each other even though we booked two months in advance. Despite these small inconveniences, we appreciated the warm service and pleasant atmosphere, and would be happy to stay here again.

We stayed with my partner and had the best time. The room’s 360° view was absolutely stunning, and the rooftop pool was beautiful as well. We had dinner at the Japanese restaurant and the food was truly next level. Art is everywhere you look, with Chinese culture and creativity expressed in every detail. We had the best stay and would definitely recommend it to friends

This is one of the Accor Group's wonderful Art Series hotels with prints from the artist Zhong Chen throughout. It is remarkably good value for a boutique-style hotel compared with places closer to the centre of Melbourne, so, as well as being a great place to stay for business local to Box Hill, I'd see this as a bit of a suburban gem given the frequent train connections into the city. The hotel rooms occupy the lower floors in the box-shaped part of the building, rather than in to two towers which are residential accommodation. However, there is also access to the roofs of the two towers, with a barbecue/outdoor dining area on one, and swimming pool on the other, both with amazing views. The rooms mainly face onto Whitehorse Road. There was a bit of traffic noise from the road during rush hours, and during the day some kind of humming/buzzing from one of the buildings opposite, enough to be bothersome for those who are sensitive to noise, but probably not an issue for most people and it was quiet overnight. There was no noise disturbance from neighbouring rooms when I was there. Staff were warm and helpful. Everything was clean, and it was all really nice. Overall, this is a great boutique-style hotel, and I'm looking forward to my next stay.

Fine, bed was comfy, took earplugs thankfully as there was a strange noise that went off every 20 minutes or so- at first I thought it was a ship horn, but feel like it may have been water pipes groaning. Anyway, nice enough- shame there was no balcony- felt a bit claustrophobic, but staff were friendly :). If you are a coffee drinker which I am not, you are very well catered for. I wanted a big mug of tea, but there were no mugs- but I bought one in the shopping centre so problem solved :)

Excellent reception and service. Wonderful heated rooftop pool with views all round. Comfortable beds. Good security with lift passes. Easy access to 5 minute parking. 24 hour reception was used as we arrived at midnight.

Great location, walking distance from shops and restaurants. Bed was very comfortable and spacious room. The staffs (especially receptionists) were professional and helpful. Enjoyed our stay and definitely will return back next time we visit Melbourne.

I stayed at the Chen for about a month from the 19th of September to the 21st of October while looking for long term accommodation and the staff especially the receptionists and room attendants we're top tier and are deserving of a raise. I will definitely be back for a longer stay, When I get more money 😅. Much love to the staff, Box Hill is amazing everything is walking distance 🚶‍♂️ Big Thx to the staff. Mike

I never write reviews for hotels but we booked this hotel as it was close to a wedding venue we were attending, and unfortunately, I left feeling quite disappointed. While I can’t fault the staff — they were polite, welcoming, and genuinely tried to be helpful — the condition of the room was far below expectations. As soon as I entered, it was obvious the room hadn’t been properly cleaned in some time. Every surface, from the bedside tables to the lampshades, was covered in a thick layer of dust. Every time we drew the curtains, even more dust seemed to fly around, making it clear that the room hadn’t seen a thorough cleaning in quite a while. I ended up wiping down some areas myself just to feel comfortable enough to unpack but we were sneezing every time we were in the room. It’s a shame because the hotel has potential, and with such friendly staff, it could easily be a great place to stay if more care was taken with cleanliness and maintenance. Sadly, in its current state, I wouldn’t choose to stay here again or recommend it to others.
