We picked this hotel due to its character and location and it fulfilled our expectations. The architecture and decor of the building truly gave the feel of an old English inn. |Our room, a Royal King, was substantially large with a king bed, bedside tables, chaise lounge, desk, closet and bar area with a Keurig coffee maker. We appreciated the space having a cheese and wine lunch in our room since most restaurants in the area were closed due to a tornado the day before.|The bathroom was roomy with a walk-in shower and all the amenities. |We enjoyed the location being in a neighborhood and across from Forest Park. A nice wine shop and wine bar were located within a few blocks of the hotel. A few blocks further west, De Mun Ave, runs through a nice neighborhood which had a restaurant, ice cream shop and wine bar. |For dinner, we dined in The Fox and Hound, a true British pub environment with dimmed lighting, dark wood, a bar and cozy sitting areas. We enjoyed the Sherwood Bistro Salad, fresh and loaded with ingredients, and the Bristol Sliders, lamb with assorted toppings. Both were delicious and plentiful. |The breakfast buffet offered a variety of fresh fruit, pastries, scrambled eggs, sausage, breads, cereal and yogurt. They replenished food items frequently and kept the area clean. |The hotel is clean and well appointed and we will definitely pass through here again.

I have been at the Fox and Hound several times at the Cheshire, but this was the first time I have ever stayed in the hotel. The hotel has a very neat old English estate vibe to it. But overall, I wasn’t too impressed with my stay. First off, we saw employees smoking marijuana in the stair well. There was a consistent smell of weed in the parking garage as well. One evening there was what appeared to be a homeless man drunk and singing in the lobby. The employees tried to deal with him, but he kept on walking away from them and went into the elevator. Breakfast was good, but wasn’t fully ready at the time posted. The worst part was when we were in the pool one evening, and two employees got into the water as well, at one point I looked over my shoulder, and it looked like they were doing some inappropriate things under the water to each other. It was also pretty hot outside and the AC doesn’t work very well.

My husband booked a suite here for our wedding night. Sheets were weirdly stained and the overall sanitation was extremely sub par. We arrived past midnight and we decided to make the front desk aware of the room’s condition at checkout. The man we spoke to was incredibly helpful but the woman who was working alongside him gave my husband a dirty look and asked him why we didn’t say anything earlier in a nasty tone. Again we arrived late and woke up late to see exactly how bad the sanitation issues were. We did not appreciate the treatment we received for trying to provide feedback. We were extremely exhausted from our wedding and we hoped that we would have received better accommodations and treatment if we were paying hundreds of dollars to spend our wedding night in your establishment. By that I mean a clean room and a ton of mutual respect from the staff. Love the overall vibe of the hotel but the rest was disappointing and made me pretty sad.

The hotel impressed me from the moment I stepped inside. It is decorated in a classic style with many antiques and paintings. Each room is named an author, writer, or screenwriter—and uniquely, it includes a book by that author. Breakfast in the morning offers a variety of delicious pastries, fresh fruits, and coffee always available. The staff is very welcoming and enthusiastic. There is plenty of convenient parking. The hotel is close to Forest Park, making it ideal for a morning jog. I will choose this hotel whenever I visit St. Louis.

The staff was awesome!! Never been to a hotel with friendlier people. Roxy checked us in when we arrived and was so nice and helpful every morning. The night desk person gave great dinner recommendations. The hotel is in a great location if you want to go to Forest Park or the Zoo. It’s a great location to stay even if you wanted to drive in the city for the day. Free parking and an AWSOME outdoor pool which we enjoyed immensely!! We will definitely be back.

This is an excellent gem of a hotel located in St. Louis. It's a beautiful historical building that has an English literature theme. Staff was wonderful & accommodating while checking us in. The rooms were large, clean and modern, and they all have the theme of a different English poet. There is a nice bar & restaurant on the grounds but we were travelling for business so we didn't have time to hang out there. Parking was ample & secure for our vehicle and they have night time security on site. We had to leave early the next morning and it featured the nicest complimentary breakfast I've probably seen in all of my travels. Awesome pastries, coffee, bacon etc. I'd definitely stay here again and it was a hard hotel to beat as far as ambience and environment. Definitely unique and cool.

Google
This really breaks my heart and I debated even posting this, but I spent a lot of money for an experience that others may need to be wary of. The staff at the Cheshire are very nice, but they seem overworked and understaffed. The hotel itself is very dingy and smells very musty as you walk the hallways. Moreover, our room was filthy. There is dust everywhere - and I mean everywhere - and the furniture looked damaged, drawers in the dresser didn’t completely close, and there is paint peeling off of the bathroom door and the paneling by the front door lock was peeling/chipping off off, exposing the lock. There are no mini fridges in the rooms. When I called to ask if one could be put in the room, I was put on hold for 17 minutes and then I hung up. I called again and got a staff member right away who told me there are not extra fridges because all of the extras are being used but that they actually only come in suites which was confusing. We had a checkout at 10 am and at 8:40 am housekeeping was knocking on our door. I felt terrible for the housekeeper because I answered the door half asleep and in my pjs which is alarming for anyone, let alone a stranger. Also, the night stand was a table that had the phone, a lamp, and electrical outlet all connected into the table. On the second day of our stay, the phone didn’t work as I saw that the table was not plugged in and I spent a fair amount of time moving furniture to find an outlet but couldn’t find a close enough one. I asked the front desk if there was an extension cord I could borrow, they asked “Why do you need one?” which was odd, given that this building is obviously very old and not designed with modern electronics in mind. This overall experience was really disappointing given that this hotel is such a landmark. I was a part of a wedding block and even with that discount, it was nearly $500 for two nights which is insanely high for St. Louis. We would have been better off at a hotel chain because we at least know it would have been clean.

The hotel has a great vibe! I loved all the themed rooms and themed decorations. You really feel like you’re in England. My only complaint is that the rooms were uncomfortably warm. The AC was definitely not working. I could really get a good nights sleep because of it.

Yelp
If you are used to and are specifically wanting a modern, high end experience, The Cheshire is not for you. If you want a unique experience and a hotel that is not just a cookie cutter version of everything else, this is a great place. The lobby and rooms have antique or at least antique in appearance furniture which I personally think adds to the character and charm but some may not like. There is a large breakfast spread that is included and coffee/tea service around the clock. The hotel has a signature scent candle that you can even purchase. Each room has a theme for an English author or poet. I have stayed here many, many times over the years and actually even held my wedding at the event space so used the hotel as our designated wedding hotel. The biggest thing that you need to know is that there is not a refrigerator in every room. I believe the suites have one included but for the other rooms you need to call ahead and request it. Even then, you may not receive one because there is a very small number to go around for all the rooms. If I was going to pick one thing to upgrade for the hotel, this would be it. In regards to using the hotel as our wedding hotel, the manager was great. She kept us updated with how many guests had booked with the block. She extended the deadline on it on her own a couple times without prompting due to increased utilization. One other obscure piece of information. If you happen to be using the hotel to get ready and are having a photographer shoot in your suite, some of the suites have colored paint. As I recall, one room has kind of a faint greenish color. I didn't think that would work particularly well as the background color so specifically asked for a room with cream colored walls. (Call me high maintenance all you want.) Anyway, we used the Brideshead Revisited room for the bridal suite and it worked out great. If you are planning to do an organized group breakfast the day after your wedding, my husband worked with the hotel to have the Fox and Hound (evening pub) opened as a space for our group to meet for breakfast.

Yelp
The breakfast was the only positive aspect of our recent stay at the Cheshire Inn. As expatriate St Louisans, we recall the inn as a fine destination. NO LONGER THE CASE. The inn is in sad need of repair. The mounted bear in the lobby was an apt symbol: old, broken down, dirty , and in sad need of repair. Final insult was the price for two days: just shy of $1000!!! Rooms were dirty, dishes left in hall for our entire stay, elevators "decorated" with trash. With two "doormen", no one ever offered to help with baggage cart or even open door for us as we trundled through We will NEVER stay there again!!

Yelp
Firstly I just want to acknowledge the front desk receptionist, Lyric, was amazing. That being said my partner and I have a few gripes about this place: -room was always cold to her, even with the a/c off -the underground parking lot entrance/exit lanes were opposite (entrance lane far left while exit lane was the far right.... Typically it's the other way around -the room keys kept being deactivated...we went through like 8 keys in the 4 days. It was frustrating. -not a big deal to me but the pool light was out so it's always dark in the evening on the pool patio Outside of those cons the place was awesome, the way it looks (see pics) was much cooler than going to a four seasons. It's right on the edge of city/county line which is a great location, the bar inside resembles an English pub which is cool, the free breakfast in the morning is nice, the workers are nice, & parking is only $10/night while the deposit is only $50. I'll come back for sure when I visit, place is far more unique than most hotels.

Yelp
It's a time capsule to past. With great complimentary breakfast ( minus eggs and sausage patties) There are original antique furniture everywhere. Lobby needs air conditioning but rooms has the best air for area. It's nearby university and hospital great neighborhood. If u like modern hotels you won't like here but if u are into English style old place this is the place to go. It's not walking distance to downtown but Uber will make it. Lose enough

Yelp
After living in St. Louis 10 year, I finally booked a room at the Cheshire for my daughter and me. The hotel staff was so friendly and helpful, and the check-in was quick. We checked into our room and there was a noise coming from the vents that would have kept me up all night. I called downstairs and asked for another room. Staff was happy to oblige and had a new key waiting by the time we got back down. We checked into another room on the same floor. In this room, there was also a buzzing sound similar to fluorescent lights coming from the stairwell next door. At this time, I did not have the energy to change again. It was not as loud as the previous issue in the other room. The room itself was disappointing. Everything was old. It has an old motel feel, not a quaint boutique or historic feel. The furniture in the hallways is random. It seems haphazardly placed. The halls themselves were a bit spooky to me. We went to Basso (which is a favorite for happy hour) and returned later. We watched TV and then I showered. The shower took forever to get sort of warm. It was definitely not a hot shower. This was very disappointing. The best part was the breakfast. It was one of the best spreads I have seen at any hotel. I would not stay here again. I am happy that I got a discounted rate. I would return for the bar but would opt out of an overnight stay.

Yelp
Zero stars: I called for availability and policies, This hotel charges for service pets, $50! That's discrimination. When I questioned the policy she said for cleanup and hung up on me. I didn't fight it, I did not want to call back and do not want to stay somewhere that has such a rude front desk.

Yelp
This actually feels like you're in Europe. The Fox and the Hound Pub was pure joy to go into at night for a drink after a days activities. It was great to have secure, covered parking and a very charming Starbucks next door. We enjoyed our stay in the STL Metro but really loved Clayton. The furnishings in The Cheshire we 1000% English / German vibey!!!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend. It was just what we were looking for! It has character and charm. The room could use some updating with more plugs and a refrigerator, but ours was clean and large. Loved the common areas and having a restaurant and pub on site were awesome amenities. We didn't try the pool since it was on the cool side, but it looked nice as well. Will definitely stay here again when we come back to St Louis!

Yelp
Car windows broken in at the The Cheshire, 6300 Clayton Rd, Saint Louis, MO, 63117. No valet, no onsite security and the cameras caught nothing. Not safe at all.

Yelp
Definitely a charming, quaint little place. It's hard to imagine something more British in the middle of the American Midwest. First things first, yes, The Cheshire is a bit dated, but don't let that sway you. It adds to the rustic charm. Sure, my room was a bit small and I was disappointed that there wasn't a mini fridge or microwave, but those things wouldn't be available in retro Britain either. The pub (Fox & Hound Tavern) swept me away, as if I was across the pond. Great bartender, lowkey vibe and solid drinks. The hotel quarters were very true to the British feel. From the decor to the chairs and paintings, it was really a neat place to visit. If you're hoping to experience the heart of St. Louis, this might not be the best place to stay. It's on the west side of town and there wasn't much of a view of anything from the rooms. I also wasn't thrilled by the mandatory extra charge for parking, but at least I felt that my vehicle was safe. Overall, I'd say the ambiance is 4.5/5 for being true to British form. In terms of the rooms and building itself, as a place of lodging, I'd probably give it 3/5. If you're staying here, stay for the charm and you'll be happy.

Yelp
I came here for a yelp event! I've never actually heard of this place prior to this event. They had food out but but the food was dry, lacking any flavor and did not seem fresh. The food was warm but after one taste I put mine down. I am glad they had a veggie tray as I am Keto so limited on my carb intake. I think having two signature drinks was fabulous however I kept finding small bugs in my drinks, so I would pour them out.

Yelp
The staff is amazing, the breakfast better than most restaurants, the rooms charming, excellent coffee and tea available 24/7, restaurants on site, very convenient location. Close to the art museum, the zoo, the world's fair exhibit, and world class shopping.

Yelp
I had a great time at the pool with several others. The cabanas was great to get in the shade for a bit. The summer time Sun did not hit at an uncomfortable angle and we were in a golden spot for supreme fun! The top featured items on their menu was amazing. The staff was extra accomendating inside and outside. Two mid size garages downbelow gave it extra breathing room. Not sure if there are elevators but there was stairs. Inside gave me some medieval kingdom vibes which was pretty different and cool at the same time! There is an interesting computer area deep in the lobby to get things done if need be. I really enjoy this unique scene in the St. Louis area. With a nearby hospital, highway and biggest national city park, Forest Park next door. The served appetitizers were very tasty. Best samosas I've had! Thank you @balloontheorystl for being the cherry on top helping us theme out our event, @DJLunarRiot for the upbeat vibes carrying the party, @Alibicookies for the delicious cookies, @fetebooth for the unique selfi event experience, @pmpimagesstl for the high quality event photos, & @cheshirestl for amazing hotel the experience that I've never had before!

Yelp
Jts a nice hotel and staff very friendly but.....TV is spectrum based ..no Netflix ....rooms do not have a fridge and I smashed my foot and shins several times on the bed posts because they stick out and are camouflaged with the carpet so you don't see them till you hit them... very painfull... I told the management and they actually told me it happens all the time to housekeeping and guests..you would think they would fix that problem... do they realize guests don't like pain?????

Yelp
If you're looking for a different hotel than the norm, the Cheshire is the place for you. The decor looks like British antique? I'm not sure but we enjoyed sitting in the lobby playing chess and enjoying the crackling coming from the fireplace. The room was quaint and beds were comfortable and firm! We loved that we could get hot tea anytime. Water bottles are free at the mini shop by the front desk, and $3 for anything else. The most delightful surprise was the breakfast! Quite a nice spread for being continental. We loved all the berries and variety of berries, eggs and bacon, and croissant/danishes. There is a $10 parking fee and we parked in the underground lot right in front of the elevator and had direct access to our room. Bonus when you had to make a few trips. All-in-all a great experience. Nothing to complain about!

Renee S.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for our anniversary. It was our first time. We loved the ambiance and decor. We had dinner at Basso which was amazing. The breakfast at the hotel was good as well. However, we were extremely disappointed with the cleanliness of our room. We paid over $300 for the room and were shocked at how filthy it was. We didn't even want to cover up with the bedding. Definitely won't be staying there again.

L S.

Yelp
Like many others it is a mixed review. Pros - unique experience ie not a holiday inn -close to Forest Park -great breakfast flavored water in lobby bottle waters and fruit to take -staff was friendly Cons -No fridge or microwave in rooms -everything is getting a bit old and dated -hvac in room was very noisy -bed posts stick out so be careful =no fan in bathroom and it was tiny also they have some weird motion detection system which was ridiculous So overall I am glad I stayed but once is enough

Amber L.

Yelp
We were looking forward to staying at the historical Cheshire. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. Our room was dirty. Dust was caked on electrical plugs, baseboards and in the corners of the room. The shower had mold in it and had not been derp cleaned in quite some time. The room had not been thoroughly vacuumed in awhile, there were crumbs and dust along the edges of the carpet and in the corners of the room. We told the front desk about the state of the room, they said housekeeping would clean it while we were gone. That did not happen. When we checked out I explained again to the manager on duty, he gave us a $100 refund. For $300/night we expected a much better experience. Definitely would not stay at the Cheshire again.

Yelp
So you'll have to hear me out on this one as the Cheshire is a really cool place. Full stop. It's definitely a 3/5 hotel stay as it stands right now, but I'm really hoping that changes. Now for the details: When you arrive, you'll be charmed by the English detailing to the building and surrounding shops - or should I say shoppes? It's adorable and I immediately loved that there was a Starbucks in the same parking lot as that makes for a really easy morning coffee when travelling. When you open the door it is a bit dusty and feels old, BUT it all plays into the English charm theme which I thought was fine. There is an old telephone booth and relics of English history that are fun for anyone who loves a good theme hotel (aka me!). I arrived at the front desk and was promptly greeted by the friendly staff. A big shout out to the staff here because they really are VERY kind and hospitable. They walked me through the process of checking in and told me if I was to park overnight there would be a fee. I do wish that was disclosed at the time of booking but again, not a huge deal. I think it was $20 which felt reasonable. After checking in I moved my car and I have to say that having you drive on the left side of the road in the parking garage while suitable for the theme is really a bit dizzying and worried me the whole time that I was going to be hit! Also there is no way for folks to know you have paid to park which felt odd to me. I'll also add that while convenient, there is an elevator in the garage that leads you straight into the hotel, but there is zero security on it. As a woman travelling solo it was a bit unnerving that anyone could just walk right up and into any floor on the hotel without needing to check in or scan a card first - especially during off hours. Those worries faded though as I emerged on my floor and it was simply gorgeous and filled with charm. I walked down the hall, found my room, and sadly the charm just all faded away. Walking into the room I was greeted with a waft of what smelled like cigarette smoke. I know it's a smoke free establishment so perhaps it was an old smell or someone had stayed in the room prior to me that was a chain smoker? Not sure but it was a bit off putting. The windows have no screens but you can open them, which struck me as odd but I didn't want to leave a window open with no screen. Afterall it was summer in Missouri - not really the most bug free time of year, so I lived with the smell. It was only one night afterall. The room overall was fine, the bed comfortable, and the ac worked great. No mini fridge which was a bummer, and I had a HUGE scare when I got home late from an event, went to take a shower, let the water warm, and when I looked at the mirror there was legitimately writing all over it. Like written in the steam. I can't make this stuff up! It was filled with math equations and a graph? not sure but I immediately wiped it off, telling myself no way this place is actually haunted by a mathematician and that rather the mirror was likely never cleaned between guests? Aside from that it was just very dated. The carpet didn't feel clean and there were just things that needed replacing around the room. It also didn't feel as safe as most hotels as there was no safety latch on the door, which I would have appreciated. Overall I left feeling like this place was just chock full of unmet potential. I hope I can return in a few years to find the hotel up to the standards it could be at and worthy of a great weekend getaway, which by the way it totally could be with just a few tweaks.

Edward E.

Yelp
The staff was very rude to us. The manager locked us out on the pool and then became confrontational with us. We booked for 3 nights. We were unable to come for the first night. And the manager just canceled our reservation. Even though I paid for it, she rented my room to somebody else and refused to give me a refund. I will never go to this hotel again. And I will tell all my friends to not go there.

Steve L.

Yelp
Awesome place, great theme. My only complaint were the bed frames stick out a bit, got all of three of us in the shins. Staff were also great!
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
We were quite upset with the conditions the room was in. The hotel itself has the fun theme however it could do with serious maintenance and cosmetic updates. The pool is quite small but a nice set up with seating out there. The parking is questionable when trying to find a spot in the evening since it is shared with the restaurants. The building is not fully secure. The stairwell is never locked from the parking garage, the front door was only locked under keycard for a short period one night. One star- for the amazing breakfast spread a wide array of pastries (amazing croissants), cereal, fruit and two hot choices. One star- the beds were super comfy so much so my mom wrote down the details for when she plans on buying a new one. Quite upset with the amount per night regarding the lack in upkeep on the hotel

Yelp
I cannot say enough nice things about our stay at the Cheshire Inn. I have been a guest there for many years. And I can truly say that over the years the service gets better, amenities are better, and overall the experience is even more wonderful. You start by meeting Roxie at the front desk. She is like no other hotel worker I have ever met. Warm, friendly, and a memorable presence. She sorted out our room, and was so kind to our young son. What other hotel has a kids treasure map??? You can't miss her because her vest is decorated with sparkly jewels that you would expect to see at Buckingham Palace. If you're going to the Cheshire you know you're in for an experience. It is like stepping into the world of Austin Powers or a Sean Connery 007 1968 movie. The hotel is of course decorated as if Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (RIP) would be walking in any second. They go all in on funky antique furniture and paintings, taxidermy stuffed Grizzy, tchotchkes all over. Every room is named for a famous UK historic person. All of the hotel amenities in the rooms are what you would see at most upscale hotels. But what you're really in for is the decor, and the vibe of being in another world. It was almost similar to Harry Potter than being in St. Louis. We always book a room in the summer, so that we can use the pool. The pool is the draw. It is always filled with nice people enjoying it to cool down in the unbelievably humid St. Louis weather. Our second favorite part is the Fox and Hound Pub. It really does feel like you are in a time warp in London in 1945. Our bartender was Chris and he fixes up with some delicious cocktails which we enjoyed in the pool. I have to mention the breakfast. The Buffet is incredible, and better than any hotel I've ever been in any country. The pastries, eggs, pancakes, and coffee can't be beat. The Cheshire Inn is a treasure. Our family can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Currently staying at the Cheshire Inn- OH MY GOSH! The cutest ambiance and incredible amenities. The continental breakfast is superb with loads of pastries and fresh fruit. I'd absolutely recommend staying here for a weekend getaway or as part of a trip. The decorations are so memorable and with prices comparable to a Holiday Inn, this hotel is 10/10. Extra points if Spencer is working the front desk, he's so beyond helpful, kind, and the absolute heart of the Cheshire.
google avatar

Yelp
Rooms are very nice and the breakfast is good, my favorite part of visiting is the hotel bar fox and hounds. I recommend spending the extra money for a theme room for the fireplace and hot tubs :) it's very good for a staycation in the city.

Yelp
The further I get away from my recent stay, the more incredulous I become. The place is a complete disaster...filthy, dank, stale, shabby...and the service was mediocre, at best. It's clear that the owners are waiting for a lightning strike or an electrical fire so they can collect the insurance money and run. I know this place has a rich history, but they have run it into the ground. Speaking of running...RUN away from this dirty dump.

Yelp
Fun place. Great event. The Cheshire is one of those places that has a unique history and could be a great comeback spot. Excellent bar. Rooms used to have "themes" but haven't stayed here in awhile. Plan on a return to try the restaurant and bar again for a great martini.

Yelp
Had an amazing Yelp Elite Pool party! Great dj and apps and bartender. All this on the outside on pool side! Highly recommend. Right off the main Clayton road. Can see arch from this location from main road. They really know how to host a party.

Yelp
Soooo Cheshire(D) From Lack Of Sleep. I came to STL to visit a dear friend, whose mother's health was in steep decline. My friend grew up in STL (now lives in London), and had always wanted to check out the Cheshire, so she booked us a pool room. When we checked in the lady at the front desk told us that our room wasn't ready, so we dropped off our bags at the front desk, and went elsewhere for a drink while we waited. When we returned, we went to retrieve the bags, and they were being stored at the bar, and not really secure. Yikes. The room (103) was okay, but later that night we were woken up at 2:30 by extremely loud, coke-fueled party from the room next to us (101). Shouting, music, and doors slamming. I'd never heard such blatant disregard to other guests sleep before. I banged on the wall and it would "quiet" down for a few minutes, then start all over again. I called the front desk 3 different times and no change. Exasperated, I got out of bed at 3:30 and walked to the front desk. I asked them to please confront the unruly party head on, and they eventually did. Nightmare! The next morning I asked to be moved, and the lady at the front desk said there wasn't another comparable room available. I told her I saw the housekeeping clean a room across the pool for us, and pretty much demanded to be moved. Thankfully they obliged. Ours last night was so much better! The highlight of the trip was hanging in the lobby by the fire, sharing wine, and takeout dinner. We met some other guests and shared our stories. Unless management takes control of noise complaints in a timely manner, I doubt I'd ever be back. Breakfast was ok, but the pool was another highlight. Date of stay September 3-4, 2021 Cheers!

Yelp
TL:DR - Cool theme, done well in the lobby. The accomodations themselves are terrible/dirty and the service is lacking/rude. Save your money and just go to the fox and the hound tavern and stay somewhere else. ----------------------------------------- Lived in STL nearly my whole life. Recently moved out, but on a trip back, I decided to stay at the Cheshire. They also have a good discount available, most likely to drum up business during covid. As with most places there's good and bad (hint: it's almost all bad). The good: This place has been around forever and I've passed by it so many times, and it's always interested me. The lobby is decorated beautifully, fits the theme well. The hallways can get a bit creepy given the old look, how quiet it was, and all the pictures of old dead people hanging up everywhere. Definitely reminds me of an old English tavern. The upstairs floors were similarly decorated and fit the theme. And that's about it for the good. The bad: Upon checking in, we had to wait about 10 min before anyone even appeared at the desk. Like there was just no one there. When the gentlemen finally arrived, he was very short and rude with us. Overnight parking is also $10. Not really sure why, but it is. The front desk worker did not ask for my plate, car model, or anything, and there was no gate or anything I needed to open to get into the garage. Really feels like I could have just parked below and been fine. The room itself is dirty and terrible. Picture frames with no pictures, dirty handprints on the head board, and just generally grimy surfaces. The tv itself was also terrible and had rainbow colors all over the screen during shows (see picture). Like of course the TV was bad. It honestly feels this place has zero standard for cleanliness given other people's reviews, which is a terrible look given the pandemic. If you want to come here for the theme, it's honestly a better value to go enjoy the Fox and Hound Tavern, get a beer, then stay somewhere else.

Yelp
Horrible. The rooms are outdated and dirty. The bathroom was TINY. I use a walker, and my walker couldn't fit through the bathroom door. We stayed 2 nights. After the 1st night, we expected to have the room cleaned while we were gone. It wasn't. When asked why not, the front desk clerk stared at my husband like he had 3 heads, and then said you have to ask for that service the night before. We paid $250/night for this dirty, outdated, and not-so-great customer service hotel. Never again.

Yelp
Mick, dawn and Dan are awesome at what they do. I had some issues and they were resolved quickly and cheerfully. Super cute boutique hotel. Could be 5 star with a little more attention to detail and cleanliness.

Yelp
A very unique hotel. I love the book theme that they have. The rooms were very clean and comfy and the staff were super friendly.

Yelp
Recently, we lost power at home with storms. I can't handle the heat so, after a couple of rough nights, I booked a room at The Cheshire Inn. I am SO happy I did! Everyone I came into contact with was lovely - the front desk, the bartender (Jill? - Hi! You are terrific!), housekeeping. Everyone great. Rooms are clean and welcoming. Pool is great fun! Everyone joins in! Food at Fox and Hounds is really good. Breakfast says continental but includes more -scrambled eggs, sausage, really nice fruit. And you are walking distance from other eateries should you wish. I love this cozy place. Dare I say, with lightning and winds tonight, I may be back if my lights go out.

Yelp
Stayed here for a work retreat. Room was on executive floor and loved the details with each room being dedicated to a British writer or playwright. I got the Daphne du Maurier room. Simple room, albeit bigger than a regular room. Stand up glass shower, no bath, armchair and a small desk. Big bed, fairly comfortable. Windows are pretty stained glass and can open with no screen. One of the windows unfortunately had a crack and was taped up. Overall the room was nice but dated. Interior of the entire property is amazing. I enjoyed just walking around and looking at everything. Fox & Hound is a small snug off of the main entrance. Super dark and cozy, small menu but my kiddo wouldn't have wanted to eat anything so we went elsewhere. I would've loved to try the fish and chips. Had our business meeting in a cabana by the pool and that was fun! I wish there would've been a server to get us drinks and food. They would've been tipped well because it's much needed! I think the Fox & Hound opened around 3:00 but by that time we went off property again for lunch. Breakfast both mornings was great. Pastries, donuts, pre made scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, yogurt and lots of fresh fruit. I'm glad I stayed here but might pick somewhere different next time. No complains really, just been there done that!

Yelp
Short story: almost everything we touched while sitting in the waiting area was dirty, it looked like they "spot cleaned" our room (leaving hair and dust in the bathroom and some kind of white grin on the bathroom door), and the bed had dark red stains on the sheet and comforter. Also, anybody can use the elevator in the parking garage to get up to the room floors in the hotel - which left us feeling super unsafe. The woman at the front desk was not the most hospitable. After we checked in and got to our room, with all the grossness that held, the man at the front desk was happy to help change the sheets and comforter for us after he wasn't able to contact the housekeeping crew; but then he stood in the foyer and talked to another staff member for at least 15 minutes. Then took another 15 minutes or so to change the bedding. While waiting in the sitting area by the fireplace (which was awesome, English country themed) more staff folks stood around in the foyer using profane language and not working. I'm sure they were just on break, or off duty, and they weren't just standing around wasting time - but with the level of uncleanliness that the sitting area had, I would think paid employees would have a better way to spend their time, maybe by cleaning the place up a bit. I encountered a total of 6 employees that were just standing around in the foyer, and one guy who kept walking back and forth through the sitting area - at least he was trying to look busy. Overall: unless there is a huge change in management or those who are in charge of the staff, and the quality of cleanliness isn't raised significantly, I'll never try starting at the Cheshire again. Spend the extra $40 and stay somewhere nice; I recommend the Last Hotel.

Yelp
I stayed at The Cheshire Inn Monday night. Shout out to Kevin, my host at the front desk, who put me in a great room on the 2nd floor, really almost a suite. Room was nice and clean. I was hungry so I dropped down to the nice Basso restaurant, steps away from the Inn (across the parking lot). I had an excellent dinner...house made pasta, excellent salad, great friendly service...both the Inn and Basso are regular stops for me. Recommended! oh, breakfast at Cheshire has greatly improved after a lull during Covid. Much nicer and almost back to where it was a couple of years ago.

Yelp
The experience starts off mediocre and only deteriorated. Front desk personnel was not available during check in and the process was so quick, I was dismissed with my room keys with questions unanswered in regards to parking and the building. Finally locating parking, I was left wandering in an attempt to access the hotel. An employee entering for a shift kindly guided us and was extremely polite, alleviating some frustrations. The interior has wonderful character with an obvious need for upkeep. The elevators shake, the walls are dinged, scuffed and show neglect. Inspecting the room went from a blasé to sadness. Seat cushions are of a cheap material and torn. The remote did not work. You cannot adjust the temperature in the room, despite a thermostat. The pillows were folded into the cases to look full but clear they folded the pillows in half to hide the fact they're flat as a pancake. Preparing for event showed hair on the walls of the shower, a drain which was filthy with hair and objects you'd believe to be obvious to see and the cloth shower curtain with mold. All said items would be blazingly apparent to locate and required no difficult inspection. Times only got worse. Doors between rooms and walls allow for you to openly hear persons in the next room. Doors slam loud enough to awake you from any slumber and other guest patrons were louder than ever experienced. Children running through the hallways prior to 0700. An experience I will never attempt again. Basso's restaurant next door, SUPERB! There's good food and drink if you're here.

Yelp
Sadly, the Cheshire is a shell of what it used to be. The "remodel" of the rooms was an honest downgrade. When we arrived we were informed there was a $10 parking fee, but no guarantee of a parking spot in the garage. During our stay there were massive storms with hail resulting in zero parking spots in the garage due to an event that night and valet parking the guests cars in the garage. Our tv was broken in our first room, so we were moved to a new room across the hall. In our new room we noticed that it now requires 24 hours notice to request house keeping, there were only 2 towels in the bathroom and trash under there beds/behind the curtains. There was hair in the shower and large broken boards under the bed. During our stay the tornado sirens went off multiple times and the staff made zero effort to let anyone know where to go for shelter or that the sirens were even going off! The storms were so bad we ended up staying at the hotel that night instead of going out. We thought we would just grab my kids some food from the Fox and Hound but there were roughly 5 whole food items on the menu, but nothing was kid friendly, so my daughter ended up not having dinner that night. Luckily, we had a late lunch and she said she wasn't that hungry. Overall, we will not be staying here again.

Yelp
Disappointed. This hotel has so much potential. It is in a prime location. We chose The Cheshire because we had stayed in a hotel in another city with a very similar vibe, and it was one of the best hotel experiences of our lives. The staff was friendly, but you could tell that maybe they are being overworked and overwhelmed. We would catch little bits of their conversations stating as much. The breakfast attendant seemed frustrated when there were multiple guests waiting for coffee one morning. Our room was humid, dusty, and warm. It never cooled down. We told the front desk about it and they told us that maintenance fixed the issue. They did not. With the AC on the lowest setting, it was still always over 75 degrees in the room. We stayed three nights and we were miserable every night when it came time to go to sleep. Our room was uncomfortably warm. We were sweating. The carpet is filthy. One of my children didn't wear her slippers a couple of times while running around the room and the bottoms of her feet were black with dirt. There was dust on the headboards and on the surfaces around the room. The shower water pressure is poor. You have to give a 24 hour notice if you'd like housekeeping services. We were able to run down to the front desk and grab extra towels when we needed them. The pool area was dirty. There was vomit on a chair cushion, and the pool was full of leaves. Having to pay for parking was a surprise. $10 a night. They don't take your car information or give you a parking pass, so I'm not sure how they even track who pays to park. I'm giving three stars because of the sheer potential this location has. If they put some money into some improvements like deep cleaning, carpet replacement, and various other things, this location would reflect the 4 stars that it currently claims. Unfortunately, at present, it is not what it states to be, nor is it worth the prices they are charging. I'm really hopeful that they will make improvements so that we may try it again in the future.

Yelp
My absolute favorite Hotel. They really have a magical place. Hotel, ambiance, and service. Motel prices. Tony, is fantastic, (the G.M.). Very friendly, and most accommodating. I'll be back for my 60th. All my guests are staying there. At least 12 rooms. All my guests stay at this Hotel, when they come to St. Louis. 5 Stars.

Yelp
What a lovely place! My family and I stayed for 4 nights during our vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the hotel as much as our activities in the city. If you're looking for a perfectly pristine modern hotel, this isn't it. Instead, it's an old hotel that is themed to make it seem even older. It's got creaky doors and and floors and has been well loved by many guests. Our room was clean, and although it couldn't be cleaned daily due to covid, we were provided any towels and toiletries we requested right away at the front desk. Every room has a leaded glass window. Would have been nice to have a fridge or microwave, but we stayed in a basic room and I'm sure suites had more. As for atmosphere, the Cheshire has it in spades. Each room is named for a famous British author or poet. Portraits and old framed pictures, texts, and documents line the walls. So much fun to wander around and see who you recognize. The Cheshire is also a great place for families! My kids were never made to feel unwelcome or like they couldn't act like (well behaved) kids. The pool area is great with lots of places to lounge. A huge mix of ages, but everyone seemed comfortable. Another great thing for kids is the treasure hunt! Ask at the front desk for a kid's or adult version (we tackled both!) and wander around looking for clues. We loved that they were encouraged to explore! Food- breakfast was decent every morning with consistent items such as cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, and pastries. There was also something extra each day like bacon or sausage and eggs. The breakfast area inside and out is lovely. We didn't get to try either of the restaurants, but the pub is full of character, good food, good drinks, and a wonderful bartender. Finally, the staff. We didn't interact at length with anyone besides said bartender, but EVERY interaction we had with any and all staff was pleasant- from housekeeping to front desk. They were quick to help us, smiled often, and congratulated the kids after the treasure hunt. All in all, the Cheshire was the perfect place to land for our trip. We will happily recommend this hotel full of character to anyone!

Yelp
Dropped by just to insure that my previous review was still valid. Yep! Still a dump.

Yelp
This is a budget hotel pretending to be nice. So overpriced for what you get. The rooms are filthy - we had mold growing on the shower curtain, the walls, and the ceiling. Air conditioning worked intermittently and smelled musty. Housekeeping has to be requested 24 hours in advance, but they don't tell you this. Honestly I wouldn't go back even if the rooms were $49 per night.

Yelp
This hotel is in the perfect location. Close to Forest Park, Zoo, Delmar Loop and many beautiful old neighborhoods. However, this hotel is NOT a four star hotel by any standards. Slightly dirty throughout.

Yelp
This review is written with consideration of the current COVID-19 restrictions, as well as the current political climate, as my stay was very close to the US election. There is not one thing I can give a positive review on. My husband booked us this hotel for a single night during a cross-country move in which we were driving. I was VERY excited about this stay because the architecture of the building was adorable! And driving through the neighborhoods leading up to the hotel was beautiful, just a generally beautiful location. Once we arrived at the hotel, my tune changed. Basically, this is a motel 6 with a theme. The building was falling apart. It does not appear to be maintained at all. The cords and outlets in my room were all dusty and none of the outlets that were available worked, except for the ones on the bedside table. My room came with none of the amenities I was promised in my booking. Due to Covid, the on-site restaurant was closed - which is fine. We expected that. They did have milk, juice, and individually wrapped pastries and cereal available for breakfast free of charge which was nice, but for me, a pass. Lights in my room didn't work, the floor was sticky in my room, and I was honestly concerned about the treatment I would get when I called down to the desk, that I didn't call to ask any questions. The remote to the TV was gunky, and the piece that goes over the batteries was falling off. The view was okay and they had an on site Starbucks which was nice. My husband asked a question about the room at check in and the man behind the counter first ignored him, and my husband asked again, and the guy said he didn't know anything about our room. Here's what really earned the Cheshire the 2 star review - customer service wasn't just non-existent, it was aggressive and rude. They ignored us and walked away any time we asked a question, in the multiple times I came down during my stay, there was no one at the desk. Even when I went to check out, there was no one at the desk. I stood there for what must have been 10-15 minutes until a woman poked her head out and asked, very rudely, "is there a problem? Because you need to drop your card into that box?" I asked if I could get a receipt of my charges and she said no and went back into whatever room she came from. At that point I just dropped my card in the box and left because staff had made it clear since the moment I arrived that I wasn't welcome there, and that simply doing their jobs was a bother. I could not leave that "hotel" fast enough. Not one member of staff has any business working in the hospitality industry. I don't know how it's rated as a 4 star hotel. Honestly. They must know a guy. This hotel is a shanty at best and the staff has no concept of hospitality. I would have loved to enjoy my stay. I really tried to spin it positively but this stay just couldn't get it done for me. I attached the few photos we took in the room of these things. Sorry there aren't more. We were trying to sleep and just get gone from there.

Yelp
Wanted to love this place and I have to say that the atmosphere is great in terms of theme and history but it is literally filthy (why did I wait to look at reviews until AFTER we stayed?) and WAY overpriced for the room and service. The guys at the front desk were pretty uninvested and unhelpful. Just seemed like they were ready to clock out and go home. Whoever does their housekeeping is really missing the doors, floors, walls, corners, casings, etc etc. Just really dirty. It's a shame because this is such a cool old hotel, but again, SO overpriced and not to mention $10 day for parking. Will be staying elsewhere for the money and cleanliness.

Yelp
Transport yourself to a totally different time and place by staying at The Cheshire whenever you're in St Louis. This place has a ton more character than your average hotel and also has a great little bar. The staff were very kind and personable. This was a unique experience that I will not soon forget.

Yelp
I do not like to give negative reviews but the Cheshire is pricy and it seems appropriate. The desk staff were very nice and we have always wanted to stay at the Cheshire, but we're very disappointed. The room was semi-clean, the headboard was flaking on my husband and it had the handprints of former guests on it. Also, the TV had no sound. After calling the desk they did come and check and bring us another. The original was screwed to the stand and it's hard to believe there wasn't knowledge of the TV being broken. Finally, I realized as we arrived that our room didn't have a tub. Baths are my favorite thing. I was ready to upgrade for a room with a tub but I was led to believe there was in fact a fub in our room. No tub. However, if that had been all, I wouldn't write this. It was just an overall disappointment. Dinner at Basso was 100% though.
