Lobster Is a Lifestyle on Prince Edward Island

"A bright, red-roofed hut on a floating food court where a proprietor famed as the 'Queen of Fries' serves accessible, locally priced comfort food—standouts include lobster poutine and signature hand-cut fries intended to keep good food affordable even during the busy tourist season." - Wendy Pramik

The best poutine I have ever had! I could drink glasses of that gravy! Fries were hot and crispy, cheese curds had a nice squeak/snap. I also had a lobster roll. It was a good value, almost half the price of other places near by. You get a lot of lobster meat in the roll. It could use a little seasoning, but again it was a great value. Service was so friendly and pleasant.

Google
Amazing atmosphere and the lady working the counter had the most intoxicating energy. Came all the way from Ottawa and this will ALWAYS be a mandatory stop for future trips. Quite literally the BEST lobster roll I have ever had in my entire life. So buttery and just absolute perfection. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Google
The best GF fish and chips ever! The owner was very kind and fun to talk to. My daughter greatly enjoyed our meal.

Google
We were recommended The Chip Shack and it did not disappoint! As someone with a dietary restriction, I had to ask about the ingredients of their buns. The owner did everything she could to find out, calling the maker of the bread three times and texting them. Turns out that The Chip Shack's buns are actually baked right down the road. I appreciated the owner's persistence and kindness. We ordered the Lobster Roll and it was delicious. The roll came with fresh fries made with PEI potatoes, which were probably some of the best fries I have ever eaten. You are also surrounded by great scenery while you eat, as the restaurant is on a floating dock in Peake's Wharf.

Google
Had their gluten free fish and chips twice in 10 days. So nice to be able to find food like this that’s been made into GF. The batter is excellent, not too thick and stayed on the fish. So far, this is the best GF battered fish I’ve ever tried. Keep up the great work!

Google
Great little spot! The vibe of this place was super positive - with lots of lovely outdoor seating - and the people working there were super lovely :) Lobster roll with fries for only $22! Coming from Toronto, I was certainly expecting a higher price point, and was pleasantly surprised. The roll was a bit smaller than I would expect, and a TAD dry (lacking mayo imo), BUT AGAIN, the price was at least 6$ cheaper than what I have seen elsewhere. And the food tasted great! Well seasoned lobster, buttery crispy exterior on the bun, and the fries were perfect! I would come back again for sure :)

Google
I had the lobster poutine. The gravy and fries were extremely salty and my lobster was cold and chewy. For a $27 poutine I would have expected a lot more. I was very disappointed. Maybe it was just an off day for them as I believe they were featured on a TV food show. The service was friendly and quick. The reviews seem to be either really good or really bad so I would be willing to go back and try another dish.

Google
The grilled cheese was... Interesting. Instead of just two slices of bread, they used a hot dog bun and put the cheese. It was pretty good, and the fries were fine. They made it rather quick, so if you want a quick bite to eat, this wouldn't be a bad option.

Brad M.

Yelp
Fantastic! Gluten free fish and chips meal was crispy and tasty With the best homemade tartar sauce I've had in years! I added GF gravy to my fries - so good. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My husband and boys enjoyed the lobster roll but said it was not their favorite one they had on our vacation to the area. The setting definitely made up for it though. The tables on the dock were awesome and we went shopping at the stores after we ate. There were other choices in restaurants that we were also able to split up on the dock and get what each of us wanted.

Yelp
This was our second place we hit for lobster roll to make a comparison to another place. This one hit the mark with the perfect amount of mayo and acidity on the cold lobster roll. It was a tiny bit smaller though than the other place we went to but no big deal. They offered french fries they were perfectly seasoned and went well with it. The price was a few bucks cheaper as well. Of course you didn't have the indoor comfortable seating area, you had to sit outside on the patio benches and hopefully find one with an umbrella, but it worked out that day since the weather was fine.

Yelp
After traveling millions of miles, over land and sea I arrived at my destination, DAVE'S Lobster Rolls only to find they reopen for the season, TOMORROW!!! So I turned left and there was The Chip Shack. This was the next best option seeing as we didn't want to do a sit down restaurant. Now this was my very first Lobster roll so I have nothing to compare, but it was meh. Nothing spectacular. Again maybe my expectations were too high. But the Fries, they were excellent and some of the best we've had. Fresh cut, crispy outside soft inside and just the right amount of salt. Order at the shack and sit on a picnic bench and wait for your order. Prices were reasonable. Staff pleasant.

Yelp
We came over after having the lobster roll at Dave's Lobster to compare them because honestly we aren't from this area and at our home you just can't get this type of food. The shack was recognized on a number of YouTube videos we watched of PEI of where to get a great lobster roll. It was certainly a busy location with only outdoor seating under umbrellas. I ordered a lobster roll that came with fries for $23.00 CAD the day we had it....no market price cost like at Dave's. The women working the shack were friendly and chatty and we got the order pretty quick. The lobster had a bit more mayo on it than Dave's and it was more flavorful, but the bun was better at Dave's. All things being weighed, the seating was better at Dave's along with the bun, but the price and inclusion of the fries was better with Chip Shack. Given the choice I would save the money and have the lobster roll here.

Shane K.

Yelp
A one woman operation when we were there, working hard! Fresh cut fries were excellent. Had the fish sandwiches which come on New England rolls which is different but great. Be patient, might take awhile to get your order but worth it.
google avatar

Anthony Y.

Yelp
Ordered the lobster poutine, a bit disappointing. 1) lobster was super salty on its own 2) the gravy sauce they used was warm, so it couldnt even melt any of the curds. Only good mentions was spicy mayo was good, and the fries werent bad. Service was quick, maybe like a 5 - 8 minute wait. Would suggest trying other items and avoid the lobster poutine.

M C.

Yelp
Ordered gluten free fish and chips and was excited to get something I could eat. The fish was so-so. Also ordered GF apple fries. That was good but do as she recommends-- order your meal and eat it and then order apple fries as dessert because otherwise it will get cold. Not sure I would order both next time. Can't attest to how safe GF is Since I'm not celiac.

Christiana D.

Yelp
This was the perfect stop while walking near the pier/wharf area in Charlottetown. It truly is a little food shack with a lot of shaded outdoor seating. We got the lobster roll and fry combo. I liked that it was a set price of $20, not fluctuating based on market price. Not my favorite lobster roll on our PEI trip, but still very good!
google avatar

Yelp
When in PEI, one must get fries. PEI potatoes are legendary and you know what? They are correct. I had such a fun time trying out different places to get fries. The chip shack came highly recommended and I get why, they are just the right amount of crispy and salted just right. I got them with a side of lobster roll that was good but nothing fancy. The fries are where it's at.

Yelp
My third Lobster Roll of the day. This little Chip Shack is near Dave's Lobster and a lot of cruise ship personnel go here for the fries / chips. Walk along the shoreline path to the left as you exit the cruise ship terminal. Taste: Lightly dressed lobster on a toasted roll. The lobster is shredded in fine pieces with no notable large identifiable pieces. Like the toasted bun but wish there was more meat. Ambiance: Shack is floating on the water. Outdoor plastic picnic tables on the floating platform. Boardwalk like! No pesky seagulls. Price: CS is known for their chips or fried potatoes rather than their Lobster Rolls. But at $15CAD for a Lobster Roll and it's fabulous fries, you just gotta have it. Roll is okay. Small chips is $4CAD without roll and it comes out hot and crispy. Dipping sauces for the fries - Garlic, Spicy Garlic, and Cajun. We went with the medium Spicy Garlic. Overall: Best deal for a meal. Roll is ok. Fries are the best. Outdoor seating on a floating pier - thus you're on the water!

Yelp
We saw this YouTube video that this is the best lobster roll in town. Never having a lobster roll before, l gad no expectations. Having another lobster roll after at a different place, l can now compare. The good: The lobster is pretty decent, and the mash tasted good. French fries are crispy and good also. Good ambiance. Right next to the water. The bad: Hard to find a place to sit. The lobster mix was more ON the bun than IN the bun. Bun was good but strangely enough was greasy. The gravy was not good. You can find pieces of shells in the lobster roll (which is sort of normal and dhows it is handmade). It is a good lobster roll but there is better out there. It is more for experience and a good time than the food itself.

Nancy H.

Yelp
The food was tasteless and extremely overpriced. One set of utensils for 2 meals and was snapped at for asking for more napkins after paying over $50 for 1 piece of fish with fries and a nasty lobster roll with fries. Totally not the food or friendly service we have experienced throughout our 4 days on the island.

Yelp
On food, a three. The service and tone from the owner was a one and a half. So, a short review for an unworthy place. This location is the fifth lobster roll, and the worst one I've had - Lobster roll was just ok. Buns are sourced locally. - fries extra crispy were good. Nothing spectacular. - poutine was not good. Fries were fine but the gravy tasted like cheap powdered gravy. - ketchup is cheap No Name ketchup, which leads me to believe that all the ingredients are cheap. Service was not good. The original Lady taking order was nice but missed quoted the price on the lobster roll. The owner then came in it was fairly rude to my wife and quickly charged us an additional three dollars versus the initial cost. I was not impressed. Would NOT recommend going to this place just hop over to Dave's lobsters instead, it's much better.
google avatar

Mollie P.

Yelp
Lobster rolls and fries were mediocre and cost $21 an order. I feel kinda lied to by all these glowing reviews. Wish we had skipped this expensive mistake.
google avatar

Winnie L.

Yelp
Lobster roll was pretty good. The lobster is more mashed up in smaller pieces than other places but the lobster was more tasty here - less mayonnaise taste abs more spices which added to the flavour.
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
The fries were very good. In fact almost delicious. The three stars are a result of a 25 minute wait and a rather small "large size". The price was $5 for the large and the location is great right along the water. I'd try another spot when I'm back unless wait was short than who knows ;)

Yelp
BOTTOM LINE: The best of cheap (but quality) eats! The Chip Shack is the embodiment that great eats don't have to empty your wallet. Located basically on a pontoon deck in the main harbour of Charlottetown, this place is best known for their amazing fries, but it seems in the past little bit, it's been making a name for itself with some of the best lobster rolls in town. My DC and came pretty much at the worst time - in the middle of at thunderstorm - but we had already ordered so we bore through it. Judging by the other customers who stayed, this place was worth staying for! Plus with the umbrellas, only our legs got drenched! This review is really only for the lobster roll and the fries because we both ordered the same thing, but their menu is a bit more extensive. The lobster roll was fresh and given the price, we were surprised how much lobster they *actually* gave you (hint it's a bit smaller than other ones we tried, but this lobster roll gave you the most bang for your buck). I wish I had more time to enjoy the fries but they got a bit wet in the storm; suffice to say though, they were solid. Definitely worth a stop here if you're ever in town!
google avatar

F K.

Yelp
Located on the floating docks, the little shack was known for their double fried fries. The fries were the best on the island. The lobster roll was on the smaller side and do not contain much fillers. Average amount of lobster but overall simple taste and at a price of $21.

Yelp
Great location right on the water, almost like a little food court with 5 or 6 other food and drink options, including a couple bars. The food was amazing - we have Gluten allergies, so its hard to find "Good" GF options, they had so many good GF options (not just salad), We had "Fish and Chips", the GF Fish was to die for, the breaking was so crunchy and the gravy was sooo good. We would definatly recommend !! We stayed here for a couple hours, took in the live music and watched the ocean.

Yelp
I loved everything about this place. The owner was super friendly, the food was amazing, and the prices were reasonable! The place is nearby the waterfront in Charlottetown and is in the perfect place if you want to stop by for a quick snack; those fries are to die for! (Or get one of the cheapest lobster rolls on the island too). The fries were out of these world, they were just so crispy and perfectly seasoned. I wish I went back to have more. You just have to get the beef gravy too; it's so full of flavor I could drink it. The lobster roll was also pretty good! The bun was warm and toasted and while the lobster was mostly shredded, there was still plenty of lobster for the price. I have not seen a cheaper lobster on the island; and for $8 (standalone or $12 with fries), it's hard to resist.

Yelp
We spotted this little shack while walking along the waterfront in Charlottetown. It was still 15 minutes until opening, but after reading previous Yelp reviews, we decided to stick around and give it a shot. I'm so glad that we did, and that we were there so early! We were second in line, so we managed to get our food relatively quickly before the line started. I ordered the Pulled Pork Poutine while my SO ordered the Lobster Roll and fries. Both were amazing! The fries had the perfect consistency and flavour, the cheese curds were the right amount of rubbery and flavourful, and the pulled pork was amazing. We topped off our meal with the Apple Fries and homemade caramel sauce. I don't know how she does it, but they were just as amazing as the main course! They are coated with something (not sure what, but I do know it's gluten free!) and then dipped in the fryer. Crunchy yet soft, these are a must have with every order from here! We got to catch the owner talk about her process with a tour group while enjoying our lunch. Each PEI-grown potato is infused with love before being cut. Once cut, they are deep-fried twice. The first time is to blanch the potatoes, and the second time is to give them their delicious flavour and the perfect crispiness out the outside with the optimal fluffiness on the inside. Her passion for what she's doing and what she wants to accomplish for herself is inspiring! When you're looking for a lunch spot in Charlottetown, make sure you don't miss The Chip Shack, where your meal is well-priced and the hugs are free!

Jenny Y.

Yelp
When we visited PEI, people kept telling us about its potato's. We were skeptical at first, cause how good can a potato be? We have PEI potato's in Ontario as well. Our second day in Charlottetown, we happen to stumble upon The Chip Shack and ordered a Lobster Roll with Fries. We were really excited to try the lobster roll, which was really good as well, BUT we were very surprised at how good the fries were! They were so crispy, I would say it's the best fries I have ever had. I'm not sure if it's the potatoes or if it was cooked very well (OR BOTH!). They were very delicious! We also ordered the apple fries after reading her biography on one of the tables and were amazed at how good it was. They were deep-fried apples cut like fries, sprinkled with cinnamon with a caramel dip. Definitely recommend stopping here on your trip. The owner was friendly as well. I would say come right before opening because the line starts forming as soon as they open!
google avatar

Colene C.

Yelp
Great service and very friendly. The lobster rolls were good and especially for a very inexpensive price. It was more like shredded lobster more than chunks but still very tasty. Pro-tip: Upgrade your side of fries to poutine! They're located conveniently close to the water so you can easily take your meal and sit with a view.
google avatar

Sajeni S.

Yelp
Stopped in for a poutine to share with my partner-it did not disappoint! Fresh cheese curds, gravy made fresh and perfectly spiced, with delicious hand cut fries! A French fry lovers dream and a must stop while in Charlottetown

Barbara B.

Yelp
It was a chilly, windy day but The Chip Shack was recommended by a local merchant and we were getting hungry so we stopped there and were very glad we did. The lobster roll and fish and chips were excellent - as were the apple chips, an invention of the owner, Karen. Even if you aren't hungry you should stop by and say hello to Karen - she was very friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our conversation. She closes for the season on October 27 but will be back next year...definitely a fun place to get good food and meet a really nice person!
google avatar

Kimberly R.

Yelp
For us this stop was pure luck. I needed a snack and the young couple in front of us overheard us discussing, "what is poutine?". She turned to us and said "you must try poutine and this is the best place for it!" So we ordered the lobster poutine and a lobster roll and were amazed with the whole meal! Everything was so fresh and delicious! This is a must stop in Charlottown, PEI.
google avatar

Jalena L.

Yelp
The Chip Shack is a hidden gem of Charlottetown located on the edge of the waterfront. The lobster roll and fries are a must try as the perfectly toasted bun was filled to the brim with lobster meat and held together with just the right amount of mayo.
google avatar

Tanya B.

Yelp
Quick trip to Charlottetown and wanted to try some local fare. Lobster roll and fries, an amazing sausage and a 'dog' for the kiddo. Fries were delicious and fun atmosphere.
google avatar

Paz A.

Yelp
I love the apple fritter. First time i tried one prepared that way. Other than that, the chili hotdog and lobster roll is below ordinary. I cant count how many times the lady hold the hotdog by hands to heater, to microwave to bread.
google avatar

Marl L.

Yelp
Um, wow. The Chip Shack's Lobster Poutine is the best poutine I've ever had, beating all my previous favourites in Montreal & Ottawa/Gatineau. The fries are perfectly crispy. The blend of the quality fries, fresh lobster, cheese curds and flavorful gravy is perfection and makes you craving more long after you're full. It's not overly salty, soggy or filling as I find most poutines. We went back again to try the apple fries out of curiosity, which are an amazing gluten-free alternative. They are fried in a crispy cinnamon batter and come with caramel for dipping. I'm drooling as I type this... The only let down is that there are not more of these Chip Shacks in Canada!

Kelly A.

Yelp
Burnt, dry small french fries, like they came from the bottom of the barrell!.owner running around like a chicken with her head cut off! very poor quality food. I threw mine fries in the garbage where they belonged and should have NEVER been served to anuyone! Taking advantage of tourists, otherwise wouldn't be in business.. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE!!! Go elsewhere to find some quality!!
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
WOW!!!!!!! My Bride got a lobster roll & fries -- huge amount of food & amazing fries. I broke down & got poutine -- delicious fries, gravy, onions, white cheddar & lobster. Best food we have had on our cruise.
google avatar

M G.

Yelp
Great lobster rolls... with PEI fries... delicious. Lobster roll & fries only CA$12.00... Lobster poutine as well for CA$13.00. Cheap eats... most places in Charlottetown selling Lobster roles for CA$18.00.... definitely I will come back! :)
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
OMG, crazy good. Apple fries are amazing. I feel like I need to eat them each day of my trip now that I discovered them. They are THAT good. My wife and I each enjoyed our fish and chips. Plenty to eat. Also great it was all gluten free. For us, that's huge. For the rest of the customers they didn't even notice, they enjoyed their meal as much as if it had gluten.
google avatar

Trina H.

Yelp
This is the worst run chip stand on the pier. Don't bother unless you have 45min to wait for fries.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Awesome floating food place in the Charlottetown harbour. The apple fries are amazing. So are the regular fries, hand cut from locally grown potatoes. Super fun experience, and tasty.
google avatar

Charene G.

Yelp
The lobster roll and fries was a perfect lunch after a long walk around the city. The lobster roll tastes like lobster and wasn't drowning in mayo like so many often are. The chips were hot and fresh. Worth the 10 minute wait. Would happily go back for more.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
PEI potatoes. That's what PEI is known for, so naturally you got to try fries here. There is no better than this place right here. Granted I haven't tried anywhere else, but based on what I tried here, there is no better. And word travels fast so if you don't get here early (especially if there is a cruise ship docked) you might have to wait a while. I ordered the lobster roll and fries. The fries are super crispy and delicious. Just wonderful. Prices are super reasonable. Lobster roll was good. Yes the fries are amazing but the Apple fries, omg. The Apple fries are out of this world, and they count as fruit so that's a plus. They are sweet, and salty and delicious and come with homemade caramel dip. Yum. Our meals were personally made by "the queen of fries" herself, the owner. Very interesting place. Very good food. Go here!
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
A visit to the chip shack was part of a talking tour we took. The staff showed us how the chips were made, including hand cutting and twice-frying. These were the best chips we had all week and were cooked perfectly! A must if you are in Peake's Quay.
google avatar

Tex R.

Yelp
We stopped here while in town and it was a surprise hit! Housed in a quaint portable building down on the waterfront, the owner is a motivated, charming and beautiful local woman who traveled the world for years and finally settled back home in Charlottetown (she even sang for a local rock band) . The chips were absolutely delicious and the rest of the menu looked great too. Just too cool and funky a place to miss while visiting - so DON'T.
google avatar

Shabreen S.

Yelp
The owner is fantastic! Had a great time chatting about her travels, life story and how The Chip Shack came about. But when it came to the food... there are a lot of better options in Charlottetown. The fries were good, but had too much salt and didn't taste fresh. Fish was nothing special. If you need a quick snack, maybe.. but if you're looking for a great eat this isn't it.
google avatar

Bruce C.

Yelp
Great lobster roll! Though not an expert, I know when something is tasty! Add to that great service with enthusiasm. Be sure to give them time to prepare your order to perfection. It's great food, not fast food.
google avatar

Tina N.

Yelp
The owner is super friendly and this place seemed pretty relaxed which was great. I got the lobster roll and fries for $11 and I think it was a pretty good deal! Half my plate was covered in fries and so good. The lobster roll was pretty good though not the best I've ever had. It was still worth the walk despite it raining when I went.
google avatar

Eun Hee L.

Yelp
This was our last stop before leaving PEI. We got lobster roll, lobster poutine, and Apple fries. All were delish! It was definitely worth the cold chilly wind lol. BONUS: the owner is super nice. Wonderful to talk to. Definitely would recommend and come back! See you again!!
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Had a hard time finding them at first since I didn't realize they were located on the floating dock! It's a cute little spot and I can see why everyone raves about the lobster roll - it was nicely flavoured although I prefer chunks of lobster as opposed to shredded. Next time we will try the apple fries!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
This place is great! It's a cute little place in downtown Charlottetown with a few benches outside if you want to sit and enjoy your food. Had their lobster roll and fries ($11) and it was awesome! Lobster roll was not drowned in mayo which is good and their fries are so crispy and delicious! Definitely would go again if ever in the area.

Tania S.

Yelp
Unsanitary, unorganized, not with the 45 minute wait. Had to give it one star to post...would have preferred no stars.

Janel L.

Yelp
This was the first food stop I made in PEI. The owner was delightful and the food was amazing, especially the gluten-free apple fries. The fish was good too, but I can't stop thinking about those fries! They are so magical that we shared them with some tourists that were skeptical about buying them. The portion was so large, that we split them between the four of us. They taste like churros. Seriously, go get some. This meal was way more carbs than I'm used to, but it was I delicious way to splurge.
