23 Dive Bars, Saloons, and Taverns Where the Vibe Is Unbeatable

"Located near the buzzing intersection of Portland Street and Princess Street is the tiniest pub in Manchester. The bar counter in particular—which the owners claim to be the smallest in Europe—measures only a few feet across and not much longer in length. The owners embrace this small serving space, squeezed inside a slim corridor: The tavern’s slogan, after all, is “The smallest bar in Europe, the biggest welcome in the world!” To avoid a bottleneck of thirsty customers, servers take orders from tables in two small sitting rooms adjacent to the minuscule counter. All told, the property measures no more than 500 square feet with a maximum capacity somewhere between 20 and 40 people (but nearly double that number can be squeezed in on match days). Each sitting room is adorned with a TV and a plethora of black-and-white photographs depicting sports personalities. Many of these pictures include members of community football teams, including Manchester United. Several feature George Best, the Manchester United star, who was a frequent visitor to the tavern. In fact, there is “George’s Corner,” where the local legend liked to stand. There is some speculation as to how the establishment got its name. It could have been derived from a circus that used to perform in the nearby field, which is now Chatham Street. But when asked about the name, the staff will sometimes say, “It’s because we get a lot of clowns in here.” The building itself dates back to 1790 and didn’t officially become a drinking tavern until 1842 when Tetley’s Brewery acquired it." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Incredible little boozer. It genuinely is tiny. We visted on a busy Saturday afternoon and the staff were doing a great job of not only serving people but managing where people could actually sit or stand. The two real ales they've got on tap were both on fantastic form, and we only paid £7 for 2 pints which is just incredible in 2025. Great united memorabilia on the walls too

A very small & cosy pub. Great atmosphere, lovely selection of beer & great conversation. Highly recommend a visit!

Stopped in for a pint and had a lovely time! We got lucky, it’s usually quite crowded but we came at the right time and got a table. Table service was great and quick. Lot of history at the pub. People were fantastic. Really added to the Manchester experience.

Google
This fabulous place has the smallest bar and biggest welcome anywhere. For those that are old enough, a traditional pub with a landlord 3 times bigger than his actual bar. Great atmosphere, great fun enjoyed by folk from across the world. Great beer, good prices Great punters all things that make a stranger welcome.

Simply a must visit. Great value pint of deliciously tasty bitter. Order at the smallest bar in Europe and the pint is brought to you with the card machine. I would definitely have preferred to have the cash on hand to have paid physically. The decor is very intriguing with Man U tributes accompanied by a variety of sporting greats. A very friendly feel to the whole venue.

Great little pub, friendly staff and probably the best Guinness I’ve had in Manchester, better than Mulligans and much cheaper too.

Google
Fantastic atmosphere, the history and the owners Barry are the incredible highlights that I strongly recommend seeing. Traditional but very welcoming to all United fans even though my friend and I were from the states. Would 100 % come back after or before a match at Old Trafford.

Google
such a lovely tradition pub packed full of man u memorabilia. proper different from a lot of the turquoise walled airport style pubs you see a lot of in manchester and surrounding

Yelp
Decided to drop into the Circus for a quick drink, really just to check out what claims to be the smallest bar in Europe. I don't know how they substantiate this claim, but it is really tiny! I would imagine when it gets busy it could be quite impossible to move around easily or to get a seat, but at this slightly off peak Thursday evening it was fairly quiet and managed to get a seat in the 'front room' which has tables, chairs, an open fire (if its ever used) and a tv screen. This room is actually about half the size of my own living room!! A great place to go for 1 or 2 drinks, though unlikely you'd want to spend an entire night there. Its more novelty value rather than anything else. Normal city centre prices with £4 pints, for some reason I had expected it to be a little cheaper than that.

Yelp
Just pipping the neighbouring Grey Horse Inn to the title of Manchester's smallest pub, the Circus Tavern is living proof of our ridiculous obsession with 'ests'. If this was the third or fourth smallest pub, it would just be considered cramped and dingy but as it is the number one- and therefore the most cramped and dingiest of all- small pubs, this is now somewhere a good thing worthy of celebration!

Yelp
This is more of a walk in wardrobe than a bar. I am all for 'all things small' but this place takes the biscuit. I suppose if you go out with a few of your pals you could have the place to yourself all night! Be careful not to get completely squashed if there is a sudden downpour and everyone runs for shelter and a quick pint.

Yelp
One of tiniest pubs I have ever been in. They do table service, probably for the most part in order to let people stand at the bar. The pint of Tetleys that was brought to me was ok I guess. It's just such a charming place, that I would have been happy drinking anything so a real ale is a bonus. Like drinking in someone's front room.

Yelp
This place is tiny. Basically a long hallway with a 3ft bar attached to it that opens up into 2 rooms and a bathroom. The place is great though. George the owner is a standup guy. Will have a pint with you and makes you feel like family. People who drink here are from all walks of life and some have been coming here for more than 40 years. Definitely a must-stop if you find yourself in Manchester.

Yelp
Reputed to be the second smallest pub in Manchester, this is one of those venues that you really should visit, if you can get in! The old-fashioned pub has a passage going through to the back of the building that contains the bar, and a couple of small rooms. As the bar is tiny, this could be a major flaw, but the service is usually excellent. Find yourself a seat and the bar staff will come to you take your order and deliver your drinks. Because the bar is very small, the range of drinks available is a lot less than most, but they have all the essentials. The main problem with this pub is the challenges posed by its size: I believe when they get very busy, measured by the glasses running out, they just shut the front door! Otherwise a great place to chill out for an hour or so and have a good chat.

Yelp
A Man United pub which also happens to be the smallest pub in Europe! Definitely worth a visit if you're new to Manchester and looking for a quick pint near to the Chorlton St coach station across the road. Don't expect to sit and chill with a drink for hours though, as it's TINY and any stools are normally claimed by the 'locals' - normally old United fans who seem to drink in here, all day everyday!

Yelp
It lives up to it's billing - this place is tiny. I happened in on a weeknight, when it was not too crowded. That allowed for a bit more breathing room in the seating areas. Friendly staff, unique layout, worth stopping in for a drink or two. On less crowded nights, could easily see spending a good chunk of time here.

Yelp
Adore this little pub. Nice and cozy and on cold winter afternoon lovely and warm with the "real flame" gas fires lit. The back room has a lot of interesting football memorabelia in and the front room has some interesting pictures of the Manchester Music scene. I have met people in there from all over the world who have heard that it was a pub that George Best frequented. Believe it or not they have a great "locals Bunch" who come regularly from Norway, being Man United fans. I love it when we have foreign football teams playing in Manchester as their supporters make for The Circus and get as great welcome from Barry and the Staff and Barry even puts the "opposing" teams flag up! I love international football days in there chatting and laughing with our European cousins. The odd thing is, I don't watch football

Yelp
Nice place as long as the landlord likes your face. I got lobbed out for no reason a couple of years back (No, I wasn't drunk, I'd just sat down) and haven't been back since. What I value more than anything in a pub is friendliness and this place fails on that score only due to the landlord - the clientelle and the bar staff are some of the friendliest you'll meet.

Qype User (glugge…)

Yelp
Love it! Not as it used to be years ago, but nothing is (it would have then got 6 stars), but still a really friendly place to go. Brilliant!

Yelp
Supposedly the smallest pub in Manchester. It's like having a pint in somebody's front room. The bar is about a foot long! They also serve you at your table, and give you free crisps when it's not to busy. You can sometimes meet some very interesting characters in here, young and old. There are photos splattered all over the walls, some famous, some not. Apparently, Ray Winston likes a tipple here, when he drags his cockney arse up to the correct side of the country. A great meeting place and ok for a quiet afternoon drink, but not to spend all night as that would be sad ..

Qype User (acegar…)

Yelp
How do you get three men in a pub? Easy usually just ask them but dont try it at the the Circus cos only two will fit! The size of course is the main thing that men talk about- no surprises there - and it is a unique feature of this establishment. In fact its the only real selling point. Once you've sqeezed in, had a pint spilled over you and marvelled at the smallness you are not left with much. A grotty, dingy place which is mainly suitable for agrophobics. I always enjoy calling- especially if I am in the company of the uninitiated but usually the jostling, squeezing and waiting confine me to the one pint. A place you should go to at least once just to say you've been but didn't Napoleon say that about Moscow?

Yelp
cracking little pub, worth a visit

Yelp
A great pint of Tetley's and the friendliest boozer in Manchester (and there's many) Always has a good crowd in and with waitress service (what could be better).
