Just returned from Boston after running the marathon. (Yes, the one where the finish line explosions happened. Thankfully, I and all the runners and their families who were staying here were fine.)
I don't think I could have done any better than College Club. I had a single room with a shared bath. The room was pretty tiny, but comfortable. The bed was great, and I slept better than I normally do on the road. The bathroom was immaculate, and it was easy to share with just one other person. The bedroom could have used just a couple more drawers, but I brought too much running gear anyway, so that probably isn't normally a problem. They do maid service every day, so everything stayed very clean and orderly.
The location for doing the marathon was ideal. Just two blocks away from where I picked up my stuff from the baggage bus after the run, so I didn't have far to go in my exhausted state. The buses for the start line on marathon morning were on the other side of Boston Common, so that was easy to get to, maybe a 15 minute walk. The Arlington T station is just around the corner, maybe three blocks away, so that gave me access to everything in Boston.
And it is central for all the sightseeing I did. I was in Boston for a week, so spent a lot of time going all over the city. The only time I used a cab was from the airport to here.
They do a nice breakfast spread. Various teas and coffee drinks, three fruit juices, a few kinds of breads and cereals, fresh cut fruit, hard-boiled eggs, etc. I have sort of a weird diet so just had the eggs, fruit, juices, and teas, so would have liked a bit more variety. But I was there a week, and someone without my eating choices will have more variety. So overall, this was a nice feature. And they even set everything up almost two hours early for those of us running the marathon and had to get to the buses between 6 and 7:30 AM. Great service, really caring!
I wasn't sure whether I should give them five stars or not. Frankly, this is an older building with lots of creaks and "character," but quite well maintained and attractive. So it's not a "5-star hotel" as that is commonly used. But overall it was a great experience and the people were absolutely wonderful and very accommodating. And the free US long distance calls--a normal thing, not something special this time--was a blessing when the cell system went down and I was still trying to reach friends and family after the explosions.
If I were sure I was going to qualify for the marathon again, I'd already be making my reservations for next year!
