"Few horror movie scenes are as memorable as the moment when the Blob attacked a movie theater in the 1958 film that bears the alien monster’s name. In that moment, to real moviegoers in theaters all across the country, it seemed like the very space they were sitting in could be attacked at any moment and that they themselves might be the victims. And today, once every summer, audiences can relive that moment in the very theater where the infamous scene was shot. The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where the iconic scene was filmed, was built in 1903 when the surrounding city was a growing industrial town. The owner converted a pair of existing storefronts into a show space that was unlike anything around for miles. The grand theater hosted vaudeville shows, musicals, silent movies, and more, becoming a fixture in the local landscape. As entertainment evolved, the theater became more of a movie palace, but stuck to its roots with pre-show music that was performed on a large pipe organ. When the filming of The Blob began in and around Phoenixville in 1958, the Colonial, with its elaborate marquee, was chosen as the perfect location for an attack. In the film, the monster infiltrates a packed house of moviegoers, rushing them out the doors in a mad mob as they try to escape the creature. Once it leaves, the Blob strikes a sort of “hero shot” in front of the theater, inducting the movie house forever into the annals of famous horror movie locations. The Colonial continued to operate after the movie was filmed and is still there today, run by a nonprofit group operating the historic space as a cultural arts center. It has finally embraced its beastly heritage with a three-day weekend Blobfest every summer which sees replicas of the infamous creature appear around town and the marquee restored to how it looks in the film, complete with a banner advertising the theater as being “Healthfully Air Conditioned.” Blobfest usually includes a screening of the classic movie on Saturday and Sunday, with wild applause when the Colonial makes its appearance. But the biggest thrill is reserved for Friday night when fans can purchase tickets to participate in an actual reenactment of the moment when the Blob attacks the theater and the panicked audience stampedes out the front doors into the street beyond." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This was our first trip to the theater but won't be our last! What a great, historic venue. The staff was great and we had a wonderful experience!

The Colonial Theatre is a wonderful treasure. I was currently there for Preston and Steve's Christmas Miracle. The event was in the 1903 theater, which definitely looked straight out of 1903. The seats were comfortable and the view of the stage was great. My photos are from the back row. There is also an upstairs seating area. The lobby and concessions were clean and current. The concessions were typical theater food and snacks with the added addition of a bar. I am very happy with my visit there and hope to visit again.

The coziest movie theater I've ever been to. The place is super clean, with new velvet seats in the Berry Theater. Prices are usually $12 per adult, thanks to being a non-profit! The programming includes tons of new indie gems as well as an eclectic rotating selection of classics. I've never wanted to watch so many movies out of a single theater's catalog, but I absolutely love the Colonial's taste. It's rare for me to find a movie theater that's more comfortable than my couch, but the Colonial is that theater.

Joined a good sized crowd to watch Ex-Fest 13. The staff and theater facilitated an expertly run 35mm film marathon. After many years doing this, the Colonial knows how to make this place feel like home. The fact that so many people stayed for all the screenings is evident of that.

A great small/medium sized venue for concerts. Pheonixville is one of those towns that may not be on everyone's radar for shows or nightlife, but it's worth checking out if you are in the area. The main street is closed to traffic on the weekends during the summer letting folks roam about easily. Lots of great dining options close to the venue, too. Because it also operates as a movie theater, they have a nice selection of concessions available for live shows and the beer prices were surprisingly reasonable when compared to other venues. A beer costs about the same as what you would pay at a regular bar. While it's a seated venue, they do let you stand along the sides of the theater if you want to get up and move to the music. I'd say the only drawbacks would be small-capacity bathrooms that make for long lines during intermissions and lack of venue parking. Make sure you plan ahead for parking because the public lots around town fill up fast and early. If you have an EV though, you should be able to find a spot easily because each of the public lots has designated EV spots which require you to be actively charging, but they also cost $.50 more per hour than regular spots.

Went for Ex Fest by exhumed films this past Saturday. Colonial Theatre has a stellar downtown Phoenixville location. The theatre is lovingly maintained and the concessions area is grand and airy. I spent nearly 6 hours here in one afternoon and I can't speak more highly of it. Looking forward to horrorthon.

Aaaaahhhhh The Blob! I have been waiting to come to the Colonial for a while. I readily admit my membership in the Nerd Club. But, this place is sooooooo much more! The combination of history and the modernized addition is perfect. Customer service is beyond amazing. This is a MUST see if you are in Pheonixville! Can't wait to come back.

This place is just magical if you love film history and have love and appreciation of old school movie theater is for you. I love this place place for blob history alone. How many people can say they sat in the theater where the blob attack movie goers in the 60s and actually get to react it every year with blob fest events. Even if your not there for blob fest they host various older movies, live events, and newer features you may not find everywhere to enjoy. There always something to do through out the week and weekend. I am horror and science fiction fan and over the last couple years they have really stepped up there programing in that realm. And I have been able to experience some great meetings with others from genre community and people who work within it. This place def celebrate the past with there history, features and events. But also moving to the future with there added wing and concession stand. Its a place to feel comfortable and celebrate cinema history with others at a cheap and reasonable prices. If you go here for a event it wont break your bank and it goes to a great cause of helping to preserve history of cinema past and also with improvement to there future. Another thing is you can become a member at some fantastic value and it def pays for itself in the end and worth to have. Plus gives discounts to some wonderful places in the area. Depending on tier membership you can get advance ticketing, discount tickets, discount concessions and more. Best part again it goes to preserving this historic place and! a staple in a now thriving community. Make the trip and youll hardly ever be let down. And also has amazing shops and restaurants in the area. Great for date nights and movie with historical back drop. Just beware of the blob!!!! Never know when the red menace may pop up again. Well usually summer but thats our secret. Remember to bring your fire extinguisher CO2 will keep him at bay lol.
