3 Best Day Trips from Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Wine-happy couples mix with families and foodies at this reconstructed former convent in the countryside (just don't expect to see any nuns). It’s in Pokolbin, the epicenter of vineyards and produce trails in the Hunter Valley area, around two hours’ drive from Sydney—making it an ideal base for a weekend of wine tastings. The 19 guest rooms are traditional, but not stuffy: think high headboards, chandeliers, generous curtains, scatter cushions, and splashes of mirror. Splurge on a Garden Suite for a private lounge area and a sun room with views of manicured gardens below." - Sophie Davies

Disappointing stay – not the luxury experience advertised We were really looking forward to staying at The Convent, as it’s marketed as a luxury Hunter Valley experience, but unfortunately it fell well short of expectations. The hotel itself is charming and has potential, however it did not feel luxurious at all. The biggest issue was staffing — the property felt noticeably understaffed, which impacted service across the board. For the price point, we expected a far more polished and attentive level of service. Instead, the overall atmosphere felt underwhelming, lacking the attention to detail you would expect from a high-end stay. Disappointing overall, especially given the reputation and cost. With better staffing and improved service, with a bit of tlc it could be much better — but as it stands, it’s not worth the premium price.

I have just spent 4 nights at the Convent as a solo traveller and it was faultless amd I travelled a lot. The staff were exceptional, so warm and inviting and genuinely cared about ensuring I had a wonderful time. Stunning place and I am not sure what people have to complain about. I was really lucky to have the newly renovated Premier room on the ground floor and it was simple but so calming and the biggest bed I have ever slept in!! Fabulous location and lovely breakfasts. Great choice of wines etc from the bar. My only suggestion would be to provide a broader range of nibbles in the minibar and/or something like charcuterie board. Simple finger food from the bar, particularly if you don’t want to go out for dinner as delivery options in the area are limited.. oh and a coffee machine in the room with a range of pod options. First world problem :-)

We booked a deluxe queen room dreaming of balcony views and a relaxing bath, only to be placed in an accessible room with none of the promised features. No bath, no balcony, sealed windows, no privacy, and detached from the main hotel. It completely took away the joy of our holiday and felt nothing like what we paid for.

The property is aesthetically great and we were on road trip stopping in on our way home from Victoria driving to Queensland. We had stayed maybe 15 years before and it was a nostalgic trip to stay for a few nights on the way home. The facility is still lovely but the maintenance is a problem. The outside needs painting and the paintwork is shabby. The eves are infested with insects and the general maintenance inside the rooms was poor. One of the tables had a broken leg that someone had just pushed back in place, the light fittings in the bathroom had been changed but had not been painted leaving holes in the wall and unpainted areas. An old style smart TVs did not allow streaming. For a 5 star place this is just not good enough. Otherwise the quite little hideaway corner and the very attractive building was great. Just needs a little TLC and investment.

Yes, it’s nice. Yes, it’s historic. First impressions are lovely. The room we were given though, was not lovely. While it is clean, it really needs to be brought into the 21st century. The shower needs a grappling hook to get into, there is nowhere to hang a towel, and nowhere to charge a phone due to a lack of power points. The lack of attention to detail adds up to being annoyed at the price we paid. That being said, it really is a lovely historic place. If modern expectations are not a big deal, then this is the place for you. However if you would like usual contemporary conveniences like power points, then you’ll be disappointed. Like I was.

I stayed at The Convent for a weekend and had an incredible time. The hotel is beautiful, peaceful, spotless, and full of charm. The breakfast was generous and delicious. What really made the stay special was the staff – everyone was very kind and welcoming, especially Sam, who went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel and would love to come back!

Beautiful hotel with history! Loved everything about it, very comfortable, lovely staff. The only annoying thing was when we ordered breakfast the next day. Somehow they lost our order so from the time we sat at the table to the time we actually received our breakfast was about an hour!
