My wife and I are Americans who traveled to Taipei to adopt our daughter. We had never been to Taiwan before and stayed in two different rooms at The Corner House over a week. I cannot say enough kind words about the staff or our experience here. It was fantastic. As a traveling healthcare worker, I have stayed in many many many hotels and this was one of the best experiences I have ever had.
Staff:
The staff are very personable and approachable. Anything we needed we were helped with, far above and beyond what you would expect (at least in America). If you are an English speaker, then you should have no problem with communication, as everyone at the front desk spoke English very well, and were very helpful in getting us around the area.
The Room:
The rooms were clean, comfortable, and cozy. The first room we stayed in was the single bedroom, which was perfect for my wife and I, but if we had brought our other children it probably wouldn't have been enough to be comfortable. However the second room we stayed in (their suite) was quite spacious, including two bedrooms and a living room area, which would have been plenty for our family. The cost for the rooms was very reasonable.
Dining/Laundry/Fitness Center:
The dining area is beautiful and the breakfast display is nice. It isn't a large breakfast, but it has many options, including many local dishes that were nice to try and quickly became my favorites. They also have a nice assortment of more "Western" breakfast items, including fruits, toast, eggs, cheese, etc. if you're not feeling adventurous. (I highly recommend the steamed buns, the bao!). The laundry is small (only two washers and driers) and a bit spendier than I expected ($2 USD per use of a dryer or washer) but they worked great and I only needed them once. The Fitness Center was *much* nicer than I expected (if you've stayed in many US hotels you probably have very low expectations for hotel fitness areas). And they had a pool table!
Location:
The neighborhood is lovely and quiet, despite being so close to Da'an Park (which is a busier area). There's a small playground just across the street, and a very nice grocery store just beyond that where you can buy anything you need. Dining options and convenience stores are all just blocks away, so it's very easy to walk to get anything you need. The local train station is a block away and is very convenient (and cheap!). You can easily to get to Taipei 101, the Taipei Zoo, or even the more distant parts of the city quite quickly and easily, for less than $1 USD per person. Then there's Da'an Park itself which is beautiful and nice to walk through or relax in at the end of the day. It's very well kept and filled with birds that are relaxing to watch.
The one thing it doesn't have is a pool but I'm not much for using pools at a hotel anyways. If my kids had been along, that might have been a consideration, but I didn't mind.
If you want a quiet place to stay that is easy to get around the city but relaxnig to come home to at night, this is absolutely the hotel for you. I can't say enough positive things about it, and I hope it's still here and doing well in the future when we come back to bring our daughter back to the country she is from.
10/10 experience. Much love to the hotel staff.
