The Corner Townhouse

"So, what's your first impression of this place? The Corner Townhouse feels like a different kind of Rome—perhaps the Rome of a century ago, the Rome before the crowds. The private, Liberty-era townhouse, platformed above the shops in the quiet Aventino neighborhood, feels like a relic from another era—and at once glance, you'll gamely be keen to take a trip back in time. What's the vibe, exactly? In Rome, we call this a chicca: a charming cozy gem of a spot. The Corner Townhouse is privately owned and has a fervently independent personality. And who tends to stay here?Quiet travelers who want privacy. No one wants to be seen, and neither do you. Now tell us about the digs: What do they look like? With colorful wood paneling painted the perfect blue-green, our Junior Suite was cozy through and through, with a dreamy bed and a sumptuous all-white bathroom. The Suite Royal, meanwhile, is a highest-floor room with a curved floor-to-ceiling window on one side and a Roman-style inset bathtub on the opposite balcony. How's the Wi-Fi?The Wi-Fi is free and fast. What's the dining and drinking scene like? The property has a Michelin-starred restaurant, a lounge bar, and a gorgeous garden terrace, all helmed by chef Marco Martini. How's the service? The service is friendly and efficient. There's a sense of home here. Where is the hotel located? Anything fun in the area? This is Aventine minor, a quiet hill in a residential neighborhood in Rome. Don't let the location fool you, though; you're within walking distance to the Colosseum and Palatine hill, as well as the vibrant Testaccio neighborhood. What would you change?Absolutely nothing. Any standout features we haven't asked about? You're right near the Circo Massimo and the Baths of Caracalla, which are both important archaeological sites—and great places for outdoor workouts. So why's this hotel worth the price of admission? The Corner Townhouse has the trifecta of great design, privacy, and price." - Erica Firpo

We stayed at The Corner Hotel in Rome for 4 days in May, and Mauro, the receptionist, truly made our stay special. He was everywhere we needed him—at the reception, upstairs, and even helping out at the café downstairs—always with a warm smile and incredible energy. His dedication and kindness didn’t go unnoticed. They also have very good breakfast, brought from a pastry-cafe from downstairs. Thanks to Mauro, we’re definitely planning to come back!

We were very excited to stay in this hotel for our anniversary & honeymoon for 4 nights in early October 2024, and unfortunately were extremely disappointed.||In short, the hotel is not as advertised, the photos are outdated, and the negative reviews that talk about it being a scam are accurate. It may have been nice a few years ago but has been neglected and was nowhere near worth the price we paid for it. We specifically booked the junior/double suite with outdoor jacuzzi tub thinking it would be special for the occasion but it was closed (and seems according to other reviews to have been closed for 5+ years). I could be understanding about some of the issues and the fact it is Rome, but it was advertised as a luxury/boutique 4-star hotel and is very far from it.||Here are some of the issues we experienced:|- We specifically booked the junior suite with outdoor jacuzzi tub but found out on arrival that it was closed and doesn't look like it has been used in years, and were given 3 different reasons from the staff (one who said it works but is closed for the winter, another who said that it was just closed and they didn't know why, and another who said that it was broken)|- They advertise and show photos of a hotel cocktail bar which was closed for our entire stay and doesn't appear to be used anymore|- They advertise and show photos of an outdoor patio/bar with DJ however this was closed for our entire stay and we were told it's only used in summer months (but I wouldn't be surprised if it's just always closed)|- They advertise and show photos of a restaurant however this is not part of the hotel and is not where you have breakfast; it is a Michelin-star restaurant called Marco Martini and is only open a few nights/week for dinner|- Amenities and photos mention free breakfast however this is actually down the street at a cafe (Casa Manfredi), where they will walk you and tell you to pick out items|- They also advertise another restaurant Mantis on-site however this was closed for 3/4 of the nights we stayed|- Air conditioning was controlled by the front desk and only worked starting the 2nd night after we complained|- On the bed there was only 1 flat sheet, no duvet or comforter; when we asked for an extra blanket they gave us 2 Ikea warming duvets with no hygienic cover and they were quite old/dirty|- Generally poor condition (in our room alone there was a broken door handle to the balcony, broken toilet flush button, shower leaks a lot onto the floor, electrical switch hanging out of the wall, hardwood floor puckering from water damage, several stains on the lounge chair, water stains along the ceiling with active mold growth, rotten baseboards with mold, and was generally dirty)||Here is a recap of our interactions with the staff:|We first raised our concerns at check-in and were told we needed to speak with the manager the next day. We spoke to the manager who tried to explain that it is just the character of Rome, that they are unable to do repairs and that we should give it a chance. They explained that the jacuzzi tub was closed for the winter (it was 20-25 degrees C outside the 4 days we were there), that the restaurant is actually separate from the hotel, that the 'hotel bar' is closed, and that the outdoor patio bar is only open in peak summer months. They tried to offer a bottle of wine to make up for it but nothing further. That evening we complained to Expedia who called the front desk and had the evening staff come up to our room; she acknowledged the poor condition of the room but explained there was nothing she could do and that we needed to speak to the manager again the next day. We would have tried to stay elsewhere however everything was booked by that time. Finally after the fourth day they agreed to give us a 1-night refund, but even while checking out they were still trying to say that they "can't make everyone happy". The staff come across nice but this is mostly smoke in mirrors to hope that you don't complain. We should also note that we only saw 1 other couple staying there during the 4 nights.||The only reason I would still give it 2/5 or 4/10 is because the bed was fairly comfortable and the room was spacious, for Rome standards, but would not stay again and definitely not a 4-star hotel and not worth the $600 CAD/night we paid.

Lovely unique looking hotel, with a nice terrace and interesting rooms. The staff was very friendly and made our anniversary even better! The latest checkout is 12pm but they can keep your luggage until later in the day. Thank you for the hospitality and ensuring I had vegan options for breakfast!

I hardly ever leave reviews but this hotel deserves one! It was such a lovely boutique hotel. The staff was absolutely phenomenal but especially Mauro (the day manager) who always greeted us with a smile, gave EXCELLENT recommendations, and took us to breakfast when we missed it at the hotel. Cute rooms with great furnishings and nice amenities. I loved the iPad which controlled everything in the room and the TV tucked away in the mirror. Our balcony was the perfect place to enjoy some sun. For a hotel in a city the room was spacious and had plenty of room to store luggage and get ready. The location is perfect. Walking distance from all tourist attractions, close to multiple forms of public transit, and near very authentic local restaurants. I have come to Rome several times and this was my favorite place by far. I will be staying here every time we come back!

Full review below. The would have received 3 stars but with the deceitful hotel description available on their website and others a star was removed. This is not a staff issue, this is a management issue. ||While I don’t often write reviews of hotels, I felt compelled to review my most recent stay at The|Corner Townhouse in Rome. My partner and I stayed here for six nights in early August. Overall, it|was a mixed experience that I hope will help others when considering this hotel.|Pros: The hotel is in a great location. You are near a metro stop and other forms of public transit|including busses and the tram. You are also within walking distance (10-15 minutes) of quite a few|historic sites including the Roman Baths and the Colosseum. The hotel is also located on a street|with quite a few small cafés and restaurants, which is helpful when you are wanting to get something|to eat but not wanting to go far. The hotel was also very quiet. While it is close to tourist spaces, the|street right outside is a fairly quiet one. The other pro was the overall look of the hotel and rooms. I|enjoy historic spaces and older buildings. This hotel has a fun feel to it and the pop elements they|have brought through color and art make the rooms unique. They are a little beaten up in places, but|that happens pretty easily in hotels, so I don’t hold that against them.|Cons: The main issue with this hotel is they are misrepresenting themselves on their website. Many|statements on their site are completely false. This is not a 4 star hotel as they say. It is a 3 star at best|and maybe a 2. For example, we didn’t even have a proper room number outside our door. There|was just a panel with wires sticking out where the number plate should be. They also claim on the|website they have “dedicated 24-hour concierge.” This is not true. Most of the time there was only|one person working at the hotel at all and often you went by the front desk and no one was even|there. When we had some questions our first night there, the man at the front desk said he was “just|security” and couldn’t help us too much. The website also boasts “our soft bathrobes will pamper|you during your stay in the hotel or after relaxing in our Wellness room.” There were no bathrobes|in our room and we never saw or were told about any “Wellness room.” The website also says|“breakfast is specially designed for our guests” and that it is “served in our indoor and/or outdoor|spaces.” We paid for breakfast with our room. On the first morning, we came down for breakfast|and were escorted by the one of the staff members out of the hotel, down the stairs, onto the|sidewalk, and down about a block and a half to a café where we were told we could order two drinks|and two food items per person each day and we just had to give them our room number. I’ve stayed|in a lot of hotels with breakfast and have never seen such a situation. The café was a good, but|having to leave your hotel for the breakfast you paid for is an odd choice and not at all clear on the|website. As you can see there is a lot of misinformation presented. The last con was the biggest for|us. This hotel has the worst sheets and pillows I’ve ever experienced in a hotel. The sheets were like|sandpaper. Our bed only had a sheet on it. No blanket. We asked for a blanket and got thin, stained,|and uncovered comforters from Ikea (two weren’t even the right size for the bed). We complained|and the staff did find us slightly better sheets and did wrap the comforter in some sheets as well.|Overall, this hotel wasn’t a terrible experience, but they should be honest on their website, so you|know what to expect. They make it out like they are a very fancy hotel. They are not. This is a basic|hotel. With very basic amenities. The staff was friendly but could only do so much with what they’ve|been given. We got a good deal on this hotel, so I wasn’t too mad about it. But I know on the|website and from other reviews people are often paying over 300 euro a night and that is way too|much for this hotel. Don’t pay that much. If you find a good deal, go for it (but maybe bring your|own sheets).

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in early October 2024 for our anniversary and honeymoon, but were extremely disappointed. The hotel is not as advertised, with outdated photos, and the negative reviews about it being a scam are accurate. It may have been nice in the past but has been neglected, and the price we paid did not reflect the experience. We booked a junior suite with an outdoor jacuzzi tub for a special occasion, but the tub was closed. The staff gave us different explanations, including that it was broken or closed for the winter, though reviews indicate it has been closed for years. The advertised hotel bar and outdoor patio/bar with a DJ were also closed during our entire stay. Although the hotel shows a Michelin-star restaurant, Marco Martini, in its photos, it’s not part of the hotel and is only open a few nights a week for dinner. The free breakfast was actually at a cafe down the street, where they escorted us to pick out a few items. Another advertised on-site restaurant, Mantis, was closed for 3 out of the 4 nights we stayed. Additionally, the air conditioning was controlled by the front desk and only started working on the second night after we complained. The room’s condition was disappointing: a broken door handle, a broken toilet flush, leaking shower, loose electrical switches, water-damaged floors, stained furniture, moldy baseboards, and overall poor cleanliness. The bed had only a flat sheet and no duvet. When we asked for an extra blanket, they provided old, uncovered Ikea warming duvets. We raised our concerns at check-in and were told to speak with the manager the next day. The manager explained that the issues were "just the character of Rome" and that we should give the hotel a chance. They offered a bottle of wine, but this did little to resolve the problems. After multiple complaints to Expedia and the hotel, we were eventually given a one-night refund on the final day. Despite the pleasant demeanor of the staff, it seemed like an attempt to prevent complaints without fixing the underlying problems. The hotel appeared almost empty, as we only saw one other couple during our stay. The only positive aspect was that the bed was relatively comfortable, and the room was spacious for Rome. However, we would not stay here again. This is not a 4-star hotel, and it was definitely not worth the $600 CAD per night we paid. It is a decent location for the Testaccio & Trastevere neighbourhoods, and about 10 min walk from the Colosseum. If you plan to walk more north to areas such as the Vatican or Villa Borghese/Spanish steps, I'd recommend trying to stay somewhere a little more central. The street is a bit busier than expected and the building shakes from the metro, so you may want to consider bringing ear plugs.

We had an amazing stay at The Corner Roma. Mauro and the entire staff could not have gone out of their way more to make our stay wonderful! They advised us on our travel plans. They gave us detailed directions on how to get to Pompeii so we could navigate the train system. We had them set up a private car to/from the airport which was so worth the extra money. The room had everything we needed and was very comfortable. There is also a restaurant just a block away where we ate three different times because it was so good and affordable. We really could not have asked for more for our stay in Rome! We highly recommend The Corner Roma!

The number one reason to stay at this hotel is Mauro, the day manager who makes everyone who enters the hotel feel that he is happy to see and to serve them. In fact, all the staff were great. The second reason is the location. This is a real Roman neighborhood. Third, the hotel cat who patrols the garden/terrace. However, the actual accommodation was problematic for us. The very small bathroom had a sink with no place for a dobb kit--the bidet had to serve this function. Outside the bathroom is a large room with a free standing tub--just not a good use of space. Our closet was in this room and it was not functional-- no light to see into the closet, small cubbies and nowhere to hang anything longer than a shirt. And the color of the room--dark charcoal...it was perpetually night. I felt as if the color palette was very trendy when the hotel was first renovated, but now the hotel needs to be re-thought and refreshed. I am wondering if the first three reasons to stay at this hotel are enough to bring us back.
