Historical Overview: The Council Tower is one of the oldest and most iconic landmarks of Sibiu, its his story deeply intertwined with the city’s medieval development. Built in the second half of the 13th century, the tower originally functioned as the main access gate between the Lower Town and the emerging Upper Town. Its name derives from its proximity to the former Town Hall (Sfatul Orașului), emphasizing its administrative and symbolic role rather than a purely military one. Positioned precisely on the line of the second fortification belt, the tower controlled trade routes linking Transylvania with the Sub-Carpathian regions and the Danube basin. Architecture & Transformations: Over more than 650 years, the Council Tower has undergone several reconstructions and adaptations: • 1588 – Major rebuilding following structural damage • 16th–18th centuries – Functioned successively as a grain store, fire watch tower, guardhouse, and city treasury • 19th–20th centuries – Converted into a museum and observation tower The current form reflects a layered architectural evolution, combining medieval foundations with Renaissance and Baroque modifications. Its clock faces, visible from multiple directions, reinforced its civic role as Sibiu’s timekeeper. Watchtower & City Guardian: For centuries, the Council Tower served as Sibiu’s primary fire observation point, a crucial role in a dense medieval city built largely of wood. Guards stationed here monitored rooftops and markets, sounding alarms at the first sign of danger. Despite losing its function as a gate after the Upper Town was fortified, the tower remained a symbol of urban continuity and resilience. Visiting Today: Today, the Council Tower is one of Sibiu’s most visited monuments. Visitors can climb its interior levels to reach a panoramic terrace offering 360° views over: • Piața Mică & Piața Mare • The Lower Town rooftops • The Evangelical Cathedral towers • The surrounding Făgăraș Mountains on clear days. It remains a defining visual and cultural axis between Sibiu’s historic squares. The Council Tower is a must-visit in Sibiu! Located right in the heart of the Old Town, it's easy to find and the perfect starting point for exploring. The tower is perfectly situated between the two main squares, Piața Mare (Great Square) and Piața Mică (Small Square). Its ground-floor passage connects the two, making it easy to access.

Bit of a climb but gorgeous views over the city from the top in four directions.

Very beautiful birds’ eyes view of Sibiu. Best time to go is before the sunset on a sunny day. My pictures are not the best because of the cloudy conditions.

Unexpectedly beautiful. I didn't expect to like it so much, the view is great and I loved how good the inside looked too.

We were two times in Sibiu: in 1971 and 46 years later in 2017. My photo shows the "Turnul Sfatului" in this two years.

Was here in November, the minute they opened. The entrance is not from the square side by from the side that faces bridge of lies, it’s a small wooden door. You pay, take steep spiral staircase up the tower, passing a couple of floors of spaces with occasional exhibits. When you reach the top - the view of Sibiu is beautiful! Very cheap (I believe it was about $2), but cash only!

For a small fee you can view a part of the beautiful city-with its gorgeous architecture. It is a little narrow climbing up the tower, so keep that in mind. I was there at the end of November and there was already a Christmas Market, but the tower isn't so crowded, the waiting time isn't more than 10 minutes (if any)
