Where to Taste New Zealand Crayfish

"Tucked at the end of a remote West Coast road near the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Haas, this red caravan run by sisters Dayna and Nicole Buchanan sits terraced along the water’s edge with picnic tables overlooking the Tasman Sea. In summer the air carries drying seaweed and garlic-butter scents while Fiordland crested penguins dot the shoreline; despite occasional highway closures the sisters embrace their isolation, having learned to cook on the job. They serve simple, soulful kaimoana—sweet spiny rock lobster quickly steamed, finished on the grill and dressed with lemon and butter—delivering the humble, end-of-the-world magic road trippers hope to find." - Hillary Eaton

It was worth the drive! We sat in silence staring at the ocean then tucked into the Blue Cod and salad! Excellent greeting to service and of course the food. We were made to feel welcome and we will make the time to come back! Well done to you all.

At the end of the road in south Westland, on Jackson Bay, access to this cafe is not a simple thing. The cafe is 48 km off state highway six, with a turnoff just out of Haast. The cafe is a true kiwi sea food experience complete with sand flies. We had the fish of the day and mussels in garlick white sauce.

Cute little shack on the beach front. Friendly service. Excellent food. Catered for gluten free with grilled fish (which was delicious) but no GF batter. Worth a visit.

Fantastic fish and chips at the driveable end of South Westland, the Craypot serves up batter fresh Kai with friendly, warm hospitality. The bright orange building is iconic:- would make a detour just for nice photos

Unreal spot to eat. Despite the weather absolutely hammering it down, making the detour to visit and eat at The Cray Pot was well worth it. Greeted with smiles and warmth, the hosts made time to chat about us, our journey and what Jackson Bay is like on a sunny day. I had the green lipped mussels and my parents both had the chowder. Honestly some of the best seafood we have eaten. I saw the half crayfish tail being brought out and next time i visit, that is exactly what i’ll be ordering. A must visit if you are on the west coast making your way to Otago.

Worth the drive to Jackson Bay! Delicious fresh food, great prices for wine and a cute caravan to sit in. A real vibe of homeliness and wanting to share good food. The famous salad was awesome with grilled prawns, and the seafood basket was also delicious. If you are in the area, it's worth it.

We visited on a windy and wet day, and wondered if the Craypot would be open. They were and we had the best food of our NZ trip. The seafood chowder was rich and satisfying, filled with seafood and beautifully seasoned. Perfect temperature and tasty buttered toast. Salad with halloumi was also delicious. Wonderful fresh produce. Super tasty. And the whitebait pattie was a star! I wish we could come back again soon. On top of all of that, the staff were welcoming and efficient. Add the superb scenery! It is really worth the trip to what feels like the middle of nowhere

No regrets coming here. We had hot drinks since the weather was foggy, so satisfied and cozy. Many drinks selections, the staff was so helpful on presenting the choice of drinks. The fish chocolate was so cute i can say that they really pay attention to little details. Cool decorations. For the savory we had fish of the day and chips, mussel cream garlic sauce and seafood chowder. All great and soooo fresh. Love the fish batter really enjoy the dish, side salad was refreshing too! Huge portion, i wish to order one more but too full already. Their soup and cream sauces well well seasoned. Great meal🥹 love the experience here. All staff was so nice, hope you’re all doing well :)

Yelp
We drove 80 km (return) out of our way to try the Craypot and we were not disappointed. First it is a beautiful drive along the cost and secondly when you get there, well worth it. It is a small trailer with picnic tables and a little bit of seating inside. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We both had the blue cod and it was absolutely delicious. Worth every penny. The salad it came with was also fantastic. Wear long sleeves and pants for bug spray as there are lots of sandflies around. It was a great experience and we are so glad we made the effort and would recommend.

Yelp
This place is literally at the end of road. There are no roads beyond this just the forest until you get to Fiordlands National Park. It's a long hour drive from the Haast and Route 6 which takes you north to Fox Glacier or west to Wanaka. The drive is beautiful and we were lucky to be there on a sunny fall day. Before you go make sure to check the sign at Haast. It's a small one on the left right by the gas station. That will let you know if the place is open. It's tiny with maybe four tables and even though the website says it is open 11-4pm the hours seem pretty irregular. This is a small single wide trailer with a kitchen on the side, picnic benches outside and a few tables inside. Also make sure to wear long sleeves and pants and have bug repellent on because this place is awash with sandflies. In our case we got there super excited to discover the restaurant was closed for the season. So sad but glad to get out here. We hear the crayfish are just extraordinary. They are literally fresh off the boat. So before you go make sure to call or watch for that sign.
