One of the best fish and chip. A bit pricey but good portion. Very good service. Slightly hard to find the entrance using map.

Nice place to enjoy a conversation while drinking good beer and eating traditional UK dishes. The pie was exceptionally good, delicious! Kind, helpful and friendly staff. Central location.

Welcome, cosy pub tucked in a lane off Cornmarket Street. Comfortable seating and friendly staff. Their classic chicken and mushroom pie hit the spot on a chilly night. Beers not quite cold enough, np it that’s an Aussie thing!

Iconic and historical public house that Shakespeare apparently frequented! Well the food is pretty good, the place is clean, has a lot of charm and we were well served.

So I’m traveling w my wife this past week to England and we decided to take the trip away from London and go west. We started at Oxford and it has a pretty busy atmosphere. I wanted to try some old school British food and what best place to try than in an old pub setting? I found The Crown which is part of the whole Nicholson pubs company which they own The Chequers as well. We actually went to The Chequers but their food service already closed so we went to The Crown. When we got there we asked if there is still food service and they told us we only have 5 minutes to order and had to rush to get our order in before they close. So we did and decided to get their Ocean fish and chips and the Steak and Ale pie. Total bill was £37 plus 10% service charge ($54.91 US) We sat by the right side of the entrance near the bathroom and all we can smell was the lemon ammonia cleaner coming through the doors and as people pass by and opens the door the smell gets much stronger. Luckily a table away from the bathroom opened up so we decided to relocate just as the food arrived. So based on the photos it doesn’t look bad.. only thing that really threw me off was the “breaded scampi” which is basically just fried breaded shrimp. However the breading was pretty thick and there’s gotta be micro shrimp inside.. lol the mushy peas is basically what it is.. mushy peas, the fries are underwhelming and soft.. should’ve called it mushy chips, and the fish.. the main piece, was dry, flaky like cardboard. And the pie, it looks good but as I tried to dig in I basically get a very thick and dry crust, lack of meat and sauce, but at least the sauce in the cup helped because I needed all the sauce I can get! I even poured the sauce to the fish but it’s really a lost cause. The broccoli stem was just plain steam broccoli but the carrots and mash were descent.. :) I wish I can say good things as I like the old pub vibe, maybe it’s because we came in late and they were about to close and the kitchen was not happy to serve us, but hey I don’t know. This was our experience and hopefully it will be better for others in the future.

My favourite pub in Oxford! The service is consistently excellent, especially from Kelsey. It has a warm, welcoming vibe and serves delicious food. I would highly recommend it as a must-visit spot for anyone coming to Oxford

Yelp
Lovely pub. Better than typical pub food. Particularly liked the smoked salmon. Pictured is scotch from their manageable and excellent collection. Most surprising was how nice the young staff was to customers of all ages. Beer collection is nice mix of modern and cask ales.

Yelp
First time in the UK and wanted to see how common it is to find great Fish & Chips. My first experience at another restaurant was incredible so I was hoping all restaurants were equal. One thing I learned a bit different over here is you need to go to the counter and order; while they will bring the meal out to you, no one will take your order from the table. So, if you are sitting at a table waiting to place an order... it will be a long wait. They are very friendly and I asked for a beer suggestion. I found that beer here, much like back home is a very subjective thing. Some I liked... some I did not. However, something very nice, they will let you sample their beers before you choose. Meals are not served particularly fast, but I'm sure it's because it is freshly prepared. Fish & Chips here are typically served with "smashed peas" and if you have never had before, you'll either like them or not. If you don't like peas, you most likely won't like smashed peas. The coating is a golden crisp and the fish was white and fried to perfection. The chips were also quite good. My meal was good but it wasn't quite as good as the previous pub I had tried. It was a nice place and the food was okay, but there are better choices.

Yelp
1 star because I couldn't give 0 Food was either broken, cold or over 40 minutes late coming out to our table. As you can see the chicken melt awful and was grey. Burger bun on the first Nicholson burger was broken and on the Brisket the burger patty was more pink like gammon steak than beef burger. Adults were served food first and had to wait a further 40 minutes for the kids meals to come out and they was not adequate. Considering it was a quite Sunday I did not expect this especially for the prices. Staff were rude when we complained about hungry kids and the length of time we had to wait as others who had ordered after us were served quicker. For the prices you would expect better quality and more professionalism from staff.

Yelp
I'm glad I stumbled across this place! Since my favorite food is mac & cheese, I had the Smoked Applewood Macaroni Cheese and it was so good. The cheese was very gooey with some delicate crispiness added to it. I would have to say that it was the fanciest mac & cheese I ever had in my life, and it was phenomenal. The place itself is also really nice and cozy with beautiful flowers hanging outside of it. I really enjoyed dining here.

Yelp
This is my first time in England, and I'm here during the World Cup so I couldn't pass up watching the world cup match in a pub. I was disappointed, there's no space, and inside it's unbearably hot. I got one cider and felt that it was definitely overpriced. Hopefully I can find better pubs in the area. The tv's outside were so small, it was hard to see. The staff however was very friendly and good. I had no issues whatsoever. Not sure if i would come back, I hope I find better pubs in the area.

Yelp
This should have been quite a pleasant experience. The Crown is located in the heart of Oxford and has a nice courtyard and nice traditional English pub feel about the place. Good selection of beers albeit a little overpriced. What totally amazed me about this place was the two bar staff on duty... a man and woman (see photograph)... these two individuals have to be the most miserable bar staff I think I have ever encountered. The woman in particular was incredibly miserable and rude. Once I got my drinks my partner and I took a seat where we could watch the bar..... we amused ourselves watching numerous customers, many being foreign tourists, come in to be served and treated rudely. If I was the manager or owner of this place I would be furious in the way the staff behaved. Apart from the staff other points to mention: The bathroom was very clean yet stunk of urine. There is free wireless in the bar but it is a total pain to access (you need to enter mobile number and receive text code etc).

Yelp
Would not recommend for foreigners-- attended bar with friends from the US, we were asked to show our IDs, and were all 20 years of age but the company has a policy where they do not serve foreigners lest they show their passport. Cool ambiance but really strange policy-- only pub in Oxford to pull that card on us.

Yelp
Great spot for a traditional English lunch. Good drinks and good ambiance. I got a Pimms cup, a summer special. They also have good vegetarian options!

Yelp
Tucked away off a busy Cornmarket Street, this pub offers a very sleek outside area for smokers. However, the inside is a different story. Very dimly lit, which is just as well, as you can hardly see what you're eating!! With Fish and chips at nearly £12....forget it!! You can do better in BurgerKing. This also goes for the other items on the menu that my colleagues had. On the positive, they do stock a really impressive selection of real ales, for those that like them. Plus...we had a charming young lady, (reading Fine Art), that served us, who pulled out all the stops for us. Thank you

Yelp
* With All the Pub Options in Oxford, There is Better * There is one thing that sets The Crown apart from other pubs: The location. Set on a central street in Oxford, it's the perfect venue for unsuspecting tourists. The food isn't bad but at the same time it isn't too good either. I tried the fish & chips and the steak & ale pie. The fish was soggy and the pie didn't have much filling. I ate here because I needed to find a place to eat quick. If it wasn't for that fact, I wouldn't have eaten there. If you're thinking of eating here, search elsewhere.

Yelp
I was torn between giving this place two or three stars. The food was pretty lame, but the beer selection and pricing was what influenced me to give it three stars. The place was kept reasonably clean and the staff wasn't too pleasant to deal with. Again, the only reason I was a returning customer was because it was cheaper to get a pint of Guinness there than other local pubs.

Yelp
After having some free time during our tour we were looking for a place to sit & have some drinks surprisingly there aren't that many options so when we saw this place we practically ran to it. Cute place on the outside with plenty of seating along with seating inside, since it was a nice day we sat outside. I made my way inside to get some drinks tried the European IPA , my friends had a Jack & coke. Beer itself was actually really good nice taste my main problem is that it was warm, eeuu am sorry what bar in their right minds serve warm beer not cool definitely took away from the taste it was so warm I had to get some ice big no no when it comes to beer it's a shame because once I did add some ice it made it even better. The jack & coke was weak, for a stronger drink u must request a double shot otherwise u are basically getting soda. Cute place, nice area to sit outside, service was good but am sorry I had to take away a star because of the warm beer & weak drinks.

Yelp
I have been waiting since January to eat here but my experience here was dreadful. I got the Mac and cheese, only to find a piece of plastic in it. The waitress took the food back to the kitchen to remake my food. I waited half an hour to get my food but by then everyone else at my table was done with their meal. It was only when we asked for the bill that the waitress noticed that I still had not gotten my food. We waited about 20 more minutes to get the bill. One of the people at my table got up to go use the restroom and found the waitress inside eating chips. He asked again and that's when she came with the bill. She said she thought her colleague had gotten us the bill. They took my Mac and cheese off the bill but still charged me for my beer. After all that I expected some sort of compensation but did not receive such. Very disappointing...
