The Crown at Stoke by Nayland, Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk - Explore & Book

"The Crown began its days as a simple pub. It became a rather more food-focused pub in 2003, then a pub with rooms in 2008. Nowadays it's award-winning; one of Suffolk's gastro gems. Set in a historic village in the depths of Constable country, it's a comfortable country haven - leather armchairs, tartan sofas, low beams, local ales. Outside, an alfresco terrace brims with flowers; just beyond are green fields and water meadows. Locals come for a drink and stay for a while. Sink into leather armchairs by the fire to read the papers, then order exceptional local food: just-caught fish, farm sausages, straight-from-the-ground veg. The wine list is extensive and excellent, the staff warmly welcoming.Afterwards, wander around the back to the attractive 11-room hotel. Everything is in place for a relaxing stay: kingsize beds, power showers, wide countryside views. Sleep deeply, then stride out for a picturesque walk, or visit nearby wool towns and the Suffolk coast. Wonderfully restorative; we loved it. Highs Fabulous food, with an emphasis on local produce. When we last revisited, the smoked rare breed bacon and sausages made for one of our best breakfasts everBarely 2 hours' drive from London, it makes a glorious weekend escape from the big smokeA fantastic pub with local beers, an extensive wine list and a warm, convivial atmosphere Countryside views from most rooms and various stunning gardens within driving distance Lows Rooms lack homely touches, although they are still comfortable and welcomingSome of the dining areas have less atmosphere than others. We advise eating in the main pub, which has lovely high ceilings and bit more buzzOur bedroom got very hot at night; we had to sleep with the window open" - Liz Simpson

Great location with beautiful views decor and ambience amazing. Service from all team was outstanding they were all very helpful friendly and professional. The only small niggle was getting into the bath to use the shower would have been much better with just a walk-in shower. Would I return and recommend to family and friends 💯 thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.

Just had the most relaxing stay in this idyllic spot in the middle of Constable country. It was my girlfriends birthday weekend and we stayed in one of the newly build lodges that over look the surrounding countryside. Beautifully fitted out. Simple but clean and comfortable with its own small private terrace. We are both nights in the pub as it seemed to offer a nicer atmosphere and food to the competition over the road at The Angel. The fish specials are a nod to the proximity to the coast. The trout was pretty good, sardines perhaps less so but there were plenty of other options on the extensive menu. Had the steak on second evening and that was cooked to perfection. Breakfasts were also extremely good with poached eggs done perfectly - always a good sign. On the Friday night there was live music in the garden. He played the right tempo at the right volume allowing customers to enjoy the food and conversation. Special mention has to go to Graham the gardener who tends to all the flowers in the beer garden. So impressive - worth the visit just to see what he has done! Service was first class throughout led by management team of Nicole and Rob. With beautiful walks around cnstable country this is a perfect weekend break for couples. Highly recommend.

We hadn’t been for a while- menu hadn’t changed much and the service, although perfectly pleasant was a little distracted - frequently left sitting with no follow up! However we tried again a few weeks ago and were delighted with the food, service and ambiance so brought the family for a celebration Sunday lunch which was excellent- thoroughly enjoyed and will be back.

Lovely gardens for a summer lunch. The grounds are beautiful and well tended. Lovely extensive menu that offer small plates as well as larger mains. Thouroughly enjoyed the small haddock and chips which came with a small pot of mushy peas and a small pot of tartare sauce. The batter was lovely and crispy and didn’t taste fatty at all, equally the chips. My friend had the burger, which was a tower filled with lettuce, tomato and slaw to accompany the burger. She was a little disappointed the slaw was a meagre offering in the burger rather than a more substantial side.

We stay here whenever we can on our way to East Anglia. It's a few minutes off the A12.||Wonderful rooms in the modern purpose-built annexe. Very quiet. Very comfortable.||Great food, friendly staff, excellent beer. ||There's a shaded terrace for al fresco dining and plenty of room in both the pub and dining room. ||Great breakfast. Good dinner, bed and breakfast deals, especially on a Sunday night.

Wonderfully renovated classic Suffolk pub serving a wide range of options on its menu. We went for large fish & chips - and it was the largest piece of cod I've ever seen. Should have taken a photo.

Very relaxed service staff all coping very well on a mothers day. Our waitress happy to chat interested in our day so far. checked regularly with us more drinks food ok. I think for us the no rush attitude to our lunch was a welcome change as being rushed out of the door is an all to familiar feeling. Our waitress was a breath of fresh air feeling she was happy to be at work and looking after all the people in her area. The free glass of wine a nice touch with the opening of the envelope & what a great idea to reuse them saving waste. Everyone was so upbeat which wasn't wasted on us. Price amazing we used to stay Sunday Night special we think its time we returned. Congratulations to everyone involved.
