We stopped in Drogheda on our way back to Dublin, as I was simply too tired to complete the journey. After two weeks in B&Bs, we spotted the "d" and figured we'd treat ourselves to a nice luxury hotel for the night. Looking around the lobby, we were fully expecting to pay a fortune for our brief stay...but the rate they quoted was shockingly low, not much more than we had been paying for tiny B&B rooms.
Our room was immaculate: large, clean and modern...in fact, it seemed brand new. Wonderful big bathtub, large flat-panel TV and possibly the most comfortable king-sized bed I've ever slept in, complete with a pristinely white down comforter. Wireless internet access is provided free, which provided a welcome opportunity to catch up with my emails. I've stayed in luxury hotels all over the world, so take my word for it: this is a REALLY NICE hotel. In a bigger city, such a room would fetch several hundred dollars a night.
That night we walked through Drogheda looking for dinner, but it seemed most everything was closed. No matter, we headed back to the D and enjoyed their set menu. Which I should say, offers so many options that the word "set" hardly seems to apply. The dining room was quite elegant, the wine list surprisingly expansive, and the food excellent. We ate like kings for about 80 euro, including a nice bottle of wine. (Montepulciano D'Abruzzo.)
When we checked out the following morning, everything went smoothly. No mysterious charges on the bill, and the staff was genuinely friendly and gracious. They even validate for parking in the adjacent lot, a nice surprise.
Should you find yourself in Drogheda and in need of accommodations, I strongly urge you to check into the d.
