Burger Battle 2025: The Bourbon Burger Honestly, I was really disappointed with this burger. It sounds really good, but delivery was not there. There was basically no flavor/sauce. All I could taste was burger, with peppers and cheese. When we made it down to the bottom of the container, I noticed that the fries were soaking up what sauce spilled off the burger and it tasted like a soy sauce. Neither my daughter nor myself were impressed, sadly. The burger seemed to have so much potential with shaved prime rib, sautéed peppers and cheese, but I believe it was the sauce that failed the burger.

The server, bartender, and host were phenomenal. Super upbeat! The atmosphere is cozy with a lot of local flair. I was passing through on a road trip and decided to try this spot and the reviews looked great. The problem is the food. I don't mind paying for great food, but this didn't come close to the price demanded. Had two ribeyes. They were cooked well, but I'lf you have any issues with blood pressure stay away, there is enough salt to have a war between ancient kingdoms over the spice rights. This was due to the fact that the cuts of meat were subpar, and about 1/2 of one of the steaks was pure fat. The mashed potatoes had to have been sourced from an instant packet found in a prison pantry. But don't worry they were doused in gravy saltier than your ex spouse. It's bad when a side salad is the highlight of your meal. With two entrees water to drink, and tip the meal was 100$! I've spent more but this was astronomical for something Ruby Tuesday can do better.

Google
Fun place. Best waffle fries ever! I had grilled chicken sandwich with gluten-free bun. They forgot the aoli but mayonnaise improved the sandwich and it was good. Service very slow. Appeared to be only 1 cook on a busy Friday night! You could sit outside and watch trains go by. Saw lots of families with kids out there.

Google
Dog friendly outdoor patio. Our waitress Cait was super nice and all the staff was friendly. Steaks were cooked great! My only complaint about this place was that the drinks tasted like there was no alcohol in them.

Marcus Corbin

Google
I like that they had a nice train atmosphere as it is an old depot! Our food was okay and they could have better options. Our server checked up on us too many times and was kind of rude and rushy.

Google
Passing through was neat to find a restaurant in an old train depot. Atmosphere and service was great. We ordered the boneless chicken tenders for an app and liked that they came out crispy and bite sized tossed in a reccomended sauce. We also ordered a bottle of Francis Coppla Claret to go with our main dishes (and was pleasantly surprised that the establishment doesnt hike the price on bottles of wine like most do). I ordered the steak tips and my husband ordered the prime rib. My only small complaint was that my food came out cool and the "cajun" option to "spice it up", that was also an extra charge, was just cajun seasoning sprinkled on after the cook of the steak, and the garlic mashed potatoes resembled and tasted like it came out of a box. I took my remaining tips as a leftover and made tip tacos the next night, so it wasn't a total bust.🙃 Overall, we enjoyed the atmosphere, the service and the staff and would return if we ever make it back to Mitchell.

Google
On our travels, we found this place passing through. I love a good burger, and this was one of the best I can remember. The atmosphere was calm and clean with a great vibe. Service was very laid back in a great way. Next time we pass through we will definitely stop again.

Google
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST PLACE IN TOWN!!! If you are in town for pheasant hunting or any other reason definitely come here! The food was fantastic, great drinks, and the service was outstanding!! Accommodated our large group fantastically and the staff was so great we came back 3 nights in a row! This place is an absolute must if you’re in Mitchell!!

Yelp
Once again, a great experience at The Depot. Extensive beer selection, service was speedy and on point despite being one of the busiest night of the year for them (night before opening day). Chislic is a great appetizer, can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches (BLT was on point), and the French Onion soup was as good as ever. The Depot has consistently changed for the better over the past few years. We will definitely be back next year!!

Yelp
Camping locally and stopped in for dinner. Great restaurant which is an old RR depot. You are next to the tracks. I went for the fried walleye and hubby went for the Rueben.. excellent food. Delish fries and salads. Homemade soups too! Really delicious!

John K.

Yelp
I sit here writing this review in a bit of astonishment. In the post-Covid days of leaving the customer behind, we have a restaurant that thinks of nothing less. Drinks filled, plates cleared, and... get this... wonderful food!

Yelp
A rustic sports bar which is a unique experience for us. The food is good. Lots of options on the menu. Good service; they were a little busy so there was a bit of a wait but much better than some of the other locations. Definitely worth a stop by!

Yelp
Great food and great service. Popped in with my brother while I was in town for a visit and found the atmosphere charming. We both had the prime rib on special which comes with two sides. Our server Levi was lovely. Looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Friday, Oct 4 were there right on opening. A pompous short arrogant man seated us in the back? room, by the kitchen area...why we did not know as no one was there? Maybe because we are 60ish? He slammed our beverage glasses into the ice machine, right there is a health violation. And there we sat, and sat, and sat. The "host" strutted around the room away from us, others did as well until a wonderful young lady finally stopped to ask if we had been waited on. The food was mediocre when we finally got it. We are from Omaha, visiting through smallish towns in South Dakota and every dining experience was great...until this ridiculous place in Mitchell, SD. SHAME ON YOU! Diners, don't waste your money

Yelp
Servers were extremely kind and helpful. The country/chicken fried steak was incredible my goodness. The burgers they have are really great as well. I don't recommend the boneless wings though........
google avatar

Yelp
Cheese cubes were good. Burgers were burnt. Paid way too much for poor quality. I would only go here to look at the station.

Yelp
Service was superb with prompt, kind servers. The food was average American cuisine. The French onion soup was mostly bread and very salty. The Ruben sandwich didn't have much kraut, but plenty of meat. At the entrance, there is a fresh popped popcorn machine that was tasty and a hit with my kids. The restaurant had plenty of seating and a great pub atmosphere.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the staff and service were great. I recommend the broiled walleye because a) it was delicious and b) you can't order this in very many places. The staff said it's one of their most popular dishes and after eating it, I believe them. We enjoyed their homemade salsa and chips with queso. Finally, we had a french dip sandwich on a gluten-free bun. The availability of a gluten-free bun is yet one more reason to dine here if that's important to you. The staff were very friendly and after I left my credit card on the table they gladly mailed it to me. We can't recommend this place enough and we look forward to dining here our next time through Mitchell.

Yelp
Gave this place a 4* because we didn't eat but the food going to some tables looked fabulous. Large portions and plenty to share. This place is an old Train Depot from 1908. Nicely decorated after the renovation and there is a good vibe inside. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Yes, I would suggest you stop in and grab something to eat!!

Nan B.

Yelp
The venue was nice. Very comfortable. The weight staff was not very good. They were very slow and they got our order wrong. The food was OK. I'd go there again if I was hungry, but couldn't say I'd recommend it.

Yelp
A great place to eat in the center of Mitchel. My wife and I enjoyed dinner here Monday night after Pheasant openers. Our waiter was very attentive and handled our menu questions with ease. I ordered a smoked bourbon Manhattan to begin our night. It was spot on. I was not expecting that type of sophistication from the bar. We both ordered burgers that were both cooked to our preferred Med-Rare. The beef was very tasty and the Jalapeño raspberry sauce on mine was delicious. -1 star for the luke warm fries.

Yelp
Went to the Depot on Wednesday the 25th 2024. We were the first ones to be seated. Our server brought us menus and took our drink order and brought them right out. She then took our food order. 2 burgers and a club sandwich. That was at 11:10 am. 11:30the tables all around us had gotten their food and finished eating. We asked our server what was going on with our order. She said she would check. 11:45 we asked again and said our order would be out soon. 12:10 we asked again and said she would check. 12:27 still no food. Had an appointment at 1pm so we got up to leave and saw Leena a server who knew us. Told her what happened and she went to the kitchen and said your order is almost done. Would you like me to have them put into Togo boxes. We were very upset. Have been to the Depot several times and never had this problem. Has put a sour taste in our mouths. They asked if we wanted to talk to a manager. Since we had to leave to make our appointment we didn't have time. Hopefully they train the servers a little better.

Yelp
We stopped at the Depot after visiting the Corn Palace. The food was great, the place is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly. I had the grilled chicken sandwich while my kids loved the macaroni and cheese. I would definitely visit again if I'm ever in the area.

Yelp
This is one of your late night restaurant options in Mitchell. I liked that they offered complimentary popcorn from a popcorn machine (self-serve). For negatives however, our waitress was curt, the French onion soup was super salty, and the cod dinner had a small portion of cod. When we left, we agreed we would have rather gone to Ruby Tuesday's.
google avatar

Dulcie N.

Yelp
Great service! Stopped for dinner - burgers were great! Wide variety of beers on tap.

Yelp
Great Owners, great atmosphere, great service, and great food! If you are so inclined you can have your choice of spirits with your meal. Great place to hold your next gathering! Always enjoy our time spent at The Depot!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was okay. The service was very poor. The waitress forgot to put our order in. When we ordered dessert she also forgot about it till she brought us our bill. We told her to cancel it and she claimed it would be right out. Which it was 20 min. later.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the steak tips with a Caesar salad, and baked Potato. Loved it very nice server and prompt service.

Kim N.

Yelp
Passable. Food was okay but not great. Service was good. Fair selection for food and drinks.

Yelp
Great food and service! A must when in Mitchell, SD. Right next to the World's Only Corn Palace.

Yelp
We took our first trip for a meal out at a restaraunt last weekend and chose the patio at The Depot. Our usual waitress was working, so nice to see a familiar face to serve us after months of no going out. They have a new menu with quite a few new and creative choices. The new Shrimp Po' Boy called my name and I'm so glad I listened and ordered it. Fresh French bread with a great amount of medical sized fried shrimp, cooked perfectly. The remoulade sauce was delightful, truly. Great on the sandwich and my fries as well. Lunch on the patio was perfect with the trains on the track next to us and ample social distancing.

Yelp
We like to try the local places when traveling and decided to give The Depot a try while in Mitchell visiting the Corn Palace. It was mid afternoon, too late for lunch too early for dinner, and off season for tourists so we basically had the place to ourselves. Our servers (Mercy and Aly) were friendly and did a nice job of taking care of us. We opted for salads (Santa Fe and Cobb). The portions were good sized and although the Santa Fe was missing the sour cream and salsa, Mercy corrected it quickly. The deserts sounded amazing but we opted to pass. Maybe next time. Overall, I highly encourage you to stop by The Depot when you are in Mitchell.

Yelp
To;dr: it's fine The Bloody Mary was great, the burger was just average. I had the Buffalo burger and i ordered it medium rare but it came out pretty dang well done. There wasn't a lot of flavor and cheese is a dollar extra. Overall, a good mean, I'm just not sure it's worth $14

Mackenzie G.

Yelp
It was good food but many mistakes were made.We order a walleys dinner and that was good but they dropped it on the floor and had to make a new one so our food took 40 minutes to come out.We also got a burger with bacon and the bacon was order well done but it a bit undercooked. The burger came with fries but when it was served to us we did not receive the fries and it was missing a top bun.We also got a chicken sandwich and asked for no mayo, lettuce, tomatoes but we got all of it.The manager was ok when we called her over but walked away when we were not done talking. So overall the food was pretty good like the reviews said but they made many rookie mistakes and they were not even busy. The restaurant was pretty clean to.

Yelp
Empty on Tuesday afternoon and it was right next door to Corn Palace The food actually deserves 3 stars but the service brought it down a star. Like I said, the restaurant was completely empty other than one elderly gentleman at the bar, drinking not eating. We sat down and the waitress came with menus and took our drink order. She came back with our iced teas and we ordered. I got the Reuben minus the sauerkraut but add cole slaw. That sandwich was delicious, especially with the thousand island dressing added to it. Hubby got the steak sandwich, which was the special. He said it was a good sandwich as well. We also ordered a basket of tator tots. They were crispy but I felt the oil they were fried in could have been changed. It had that slight "old oil" taste. Once we got our food no one came to check on us. We had to take our glasses to the bar for refills and even after that she never came by other than to drop off the check. You could have the best food around but if the service is terribly lacking than my review goes way down. I could even understand, a little, if it had been busy, but that wasn't the case here. It's convient to the Corn Palace (see my review about that establishment) but with this service I'd be hard pressed to stop in again.

Kristina M.

Yelp
Quiet ambiance. Casino option was fun. Fish po boy was fresh, but bottom bun got soggy fast! Bacon wrapped shrimp were not tasty. Waffle fries were crispy and flavorful.
google avatar

Beau S.

Yelp
We stopped at this spot while driving through to Boise. Very welcoming and they let us sit in the air conditioned patio area with our dog. I wanted a local experience and my waiter handled it. A fresh beer (blond ale) and the highlander burger. Diet be damned but it was great. Cooked perfectly medium buffalo burger with Monterey jack, sweet onions, potatoes and covered in brown gravy. Basically it's a buffalo poutine and it was glorious. Crunchy waffle fries and brown gravy are the artery clogging good time you need when on the road. You got a bun, but it's under the patty and soaking all that brown gravy....#gottadoit.

Yelp
Good food but a bit expensive. Good cold micro brews beers. Nice interior decorator several TVs. Nice large wood bar Did a great job converting the beautiful building. Center location which is easy to find. Plenty of parking. Glad they saved this beautiful old building

Ryan V.

Yelp
Burger was over cooked and patty was thin. I asked for a medium cooked burger. Waffle fries were good. Beer selection was good.

Yelp
We were in town for a funeral. Eaten here many times with mixed reviews; however, tonight there was no mistaking that the food was absolutely disgusting! The Caesar salad tasted like rotten anchovies. The medium burgers were hard and nastily overdone with pickled jalapeños on the raspberry popper burger! Seriously?! The waffle fries tasted like they were made yesterday. Reuben was dry and tough lunch meat folks! Super gross. And to top it all off everything and I mean everything was cold. And my $7.50 beer had about 3 inches of head. What a waste of money. Hard enough trip as it was for my husband's mother's funeral. What a waste of $140! Never going here again. Shame on you John for being ok with serving terrible food that is terribly overpriced. Oh and the icing on the cake you say? It smelled super bad in this aesthetically dismal back hole of a place we were seated to eat our $16 nasty burgers!

Yelp
Great food! The pricing is about average for this type of place. Service was wonderful and quick. nice and clean and a pretty neat place. It also has a lot of seating.

Yelp
I ordered the Beef Tips and about as blan as you can get. I got french onion soup as a side and that must of used all of the salt as not sure there was any on the beef. Atmosphere was decent and the waitstaff was mediocre. Not sure I will be back to the Depot
google avatar

Brent F.

Yelp
Great burger and soup. Staff is super friendly. Vehicle broke down so stuck in town for a few hours, staff gave a list of places to visit within walking distance. Next time coming through South Dakota will make this a stop.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
The options in Mitchell are limited and most are just ok. This place was a great find. Good selection of draught beer from all over the country. Service was friendly and attentive. Food was very good, had the fried fish, cooked perfectly. If im ever back in Mitchell I'm coming back here.
google avatar

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Food and service were good but the prices were pretty high in my opinion for both the entrees and drinks. My husband and I ordered the same thing- the surf and turf. His was great, my steak was pretty tough. Nice spot in town though and plenty of parking.
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
We swung through town and a worker at the Corn Palace suggested eating here. They put some unique twists on bar food and it's a cool place as well. I got the Coal Chamber and it was outstanding! Portions were huge as well. We are wanting to make some suggestions to some local (Iowa) restaurants to take notes on their menu!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Granted it was Sunday but the service was sooo slow it took us over 30 minutes to even be asked for our orders, the only thing worse than the service was the food - the french dip was so salty you couldn't even dip it. The other dishes were equally meh. Then the $110 bill for 4 sandwiches was the icing on the cake.

Jasen R.

Yelp
Was very hungry after six hours of driving and was very disappointed that they were closed when their hours said 2 AM & it was 10:20. Double check if you come to this place because you may not get what you expect.

Colby O.

Yelp
My family went to The Depot for a birthday dinner and it was the worst service and food we all have experienced in a while. Our server, Shelby, was very rude and she provided awful service. The food was the worst my family has had at a food establishment in all of Mitchell. None of our orders are what we wanted and what we did get was blah. As we were leaving the lady busing tables was pushing us out. As I was putting my coat on to leave, she crawled right under my arm and was in the way of my family getting out of the booth. I could wait another year until I come back to this place.

Yelp
Stopping in Mitchell, on way from wi to so. Ca. We are From wi 40 yrs ago and still looking for that walleye fish dinner. Pretty good, and a hamburger was good also. Good service , cheap drinks . Dinner for 3 was 50.00 with 5 adult beverages . 7.50 tip out the door under 60.00. Place was pretty cool. Dated but nice. Service was good. 4 stars, good for a small in town in the middle of the fly over.

Yelp
I went in with a friend. The chili was great along with a half sandwich. We both had cheese cake for dessert.
google avatar

AC T.

Yelp
Terrible service. It took over an hour and 15min to get an order of wings, fries, and a chicken sandwich. Waiter took our drink order and meal order and didn't show their face for over 45min. Food was below par and was not hot. Would not recommend this restaurant. Look elsewhere.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Thanks Yelp for showing us this nice gem of a place! Great menu & impressive 26 beers on tap! Bailey was our server - she did great! My kids were filled easily and both my wife and I were impressed with our meals. I had the Jack Daniels breaded shrimp Pasta, and she had the Chimichanga. I also had the French onion soup, which was dark and maybe not the perfect bowl (I only finished half) but we devoured everything else!
google avatar

Sara T.

Yelp
Got into town later than planned, and wanted something not fast food, they were open later. Food was good, soup of the day potato had great seasoning. Husband had the special steak of the day...and it's gone. Southwest chicken wrap was tasty - wish i could have finished it! Try the root beer on tap. Service at the bar was wonderful! Plus the setting of an old train depot is a lovely slice of history.

Ellen A.

Yelp
Fast friendly service. Seated right away. Everyone got a burger but all reported they were good. Nothing fancy, ver casual....but that's fine when it tastes good, our waitress was attentive and thought ahead about bringing ketchup and mustard. Drinks refilled quickly.
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
Hmmm okay so I have been here a few times over the years and I feel like it's really declined with time! I do think they have very nice prices on drinks, so that's a great perk. This last time we were there, we ordered some French onion soup, Reuben sandwiches, and chicken. They changed the salads and absolutely all of them are iceberg based now, so that was weird. The French onion soup doesn't have bread anymore, it has croutons. The Reuben was great, really good. I had a nice couple drinks and the husband had some beer. The chicken was cold? So it was okay. It was really reasonable prices for the evening meal.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere, love saving the train depot. Had their corned beef & cabbage special, Ann went for the prime rib. Waitress came back and said the kitchen wouldn't start cooking the prime rib for another 1/2 hour. She went for 8 oz cod. Food came quick the corned beef and cabbage was good; the potatoes were undercooked. Ann's 8 oz cod was closer to 6, but she said it was good. Was enjoyable, but not great, just good. Had to ask the waitress for refills.
