I am extremely disappointed with the treatment I experienced at this store located inside Union Station.
At approximately 5:00 PM on a Friday evening, one of the busiest times of day in one of the busiest transit hubs in Toronto, I attempted to purchase two small candles. When I went to pay, the cashier informed me that there was no money in the register to provide change.
As someone who has worked in retail and as a cashier for many years, I know that businesses are responsible for ensuring their registers are properly stocked with change, particularly during peak business hours. Being told that a cash register in a high-traffic location has no change available at 5 PM is highly unusual and frankly unacceptable. I was using a $50 bill to pay for two candles that’s ridiculous.
The situation left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome as a customer. The explanation provided did not make sense, and it raised serious concerns for me about whether assumptions were being made about us as customers. As a Black customer, experiences like this unfortunately raise questions about whether bias played a role in how the situation was handled.
I walked into the store simply intending to make a small purchase, yet left feeling dismissed and disrespected. That is not how any customer should feel when entering a business.
Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this establishment. Businesses operating in a public space as diverse and busy as Union Station should ensure their staff are prepared to serve customers professionally, respectfully, and without making anyone feel unwelcome. I would not come back here ever again!!! Made me feel like I was using counterfeit money to buy two little candles!! Smh
