The Fell Hotel sits in a lovely location and has plenty of potential, but comfort and value for money were disappointing. Dinner was the highlight, genuinely tasty and well presented, but everything beyond the restaurant felt lacking.
Our “petite” room was exactly that: very small, barely enough space for luggage and smaller than many city hotel rooms. The bathroom had been partly refurbished, which was appreciated, but the main communal areas were tired and would benefit from updated furniture and paint to make them feel warm and welcoming again.
The real issue was the bed. It was extremely hard and small, only a UK double, and the pillows were thin and lumpy. Both of us slept terribly and woke up sore, which really coloured the stay. Even in November the room felt stuffy, and since there were no fly screens, opening the window to get some air meant midges came in.
Service was fine overall, though no one answered the phone three times around 11am when I called for help with bags at checkout, which seemed odd. Breakfast was poor and not worth lingering for; I would suggest going to Riverbank Café nearby for a proper coffee and breakfast roll instead.
The spa, a fifteen-minute drive away, was pleasant enough, though a bit dated. The sauna and changing areas need refreshing, but it was still a nice visit.
In short, the setting and dinner were lovely, but the comfort was far below standard. For the price, the hotel really needs to address the beds, pillows, and general upkeep before it can justify its rates.
