I had a mixed impression of my dive and would like to share both the positive and negative aspects here as constructive feedback.
First, I’d like to highlight the very friendly owner, Dennis, whom I briefly met at the dive center – everything gave me a professional first impression. I also really appreciated that my boyfriend, who doesn’t have a diving license, was able to join the trip and snorkel for $25. The vegetarian curry served on the boat was absolutely delicious! Two 60-minute dives including lunch for $80 is a very fair price. Our small group (just my buddy, myself, and the guide) was also a big plus.
Unfortunately, there were also some serious issues: right at the beginning of the dive, the dump valve of my BCD on the back broke off – a real shock for me as a beginner, since I rely heavily on it. The dive guide, a Russian man who, according to my buddy, is not part of the regular team and only helps out occasionally, didn’t adapt to my pace at all. The strong current kept pushing me forward (I was the lightest diver), and I spent most of the time trying to see where the guide was or where he was heading, rather than enjoying the dive.
After the first dive, the BCD had to be replaced – the other valves weren’t functioning properly either. Unfortunately, the replacement jacket was far too big, making it very difficult to maintain buoyancy as the tank kept getting pulled away by the current.
The most shocking part, however, was our encounter with a box jellyfish, which suddenly appeared just an arm’s length away from me. I had no idea how dangerous these creatures are – the guide simply illuminated it without warning us or creating distance. Only after surfacing did he casually mention that it was one of the most venomous jellyfish in the world. Given the strong current, this felt extremely reckless.
While other guides on the boat were actively engaging with their groups and explaining what they had seen, our guide kept to himself and didn’t share any information – which was also disappointing.
Based on the serious safety issues, I would normally give only two stars. However, since my negative experience was primarily due to the external guide’s behavior – and the rest of the team made a very professional impression – I’m giving three stars, in the hope that such incidents can be avoided in the future.
