You’re at this alfresco, waterfront lounge for one of two reasons: Either to grab a cocktail before an indulgent steak dinner at the adjacent Waterlot Inn or for the blissful sunset view, live ukulele music, and craft cocktails and small plates. Either way, The Dock heartily delivers on both fronts. The seasonal spot has become a favorite among locals eager to avoid the hustle and bustle of Hamilton, and among tourists staying at the nearby Fairmont Southampton up the hill—the resort runs a free shuttle to the bayside bar and restaurant. The Waterlot Inn next door is one of Bermuda’s fanciest restaurants—even though jackets aren’t required for men, most gents don one anyway. The folks are here for Dock and Dock alone, meanwhile, all don their resort-casual best: men in Bermuda shorts and women in sundresses. Okay, on to the real reason we're here (aside from the view): the drinks. What's good? Think: craft cocktails made with high-end gins and local Gosling’s rums, pitchers of red and white wine sangria, and, if you’re way into garnishes, a trio of "grilled" cocktails featuring charred peaches, corn, or pineapple served on a skewer stuck into your drink. Since ginger beer is a popular Bermuda mixer—most notably used in a Dark 'n’ Stormy—there’s also a lengthy mule menu where you can select your spirit of choice (for a fruity, refreshing twist, try it with Absolut blueberry). Anything worth ordering off the food menu? The Dock is a great place to come with a group—its small plates can easily be shared with friends. The short rib sliders with pickled shallots and goat cheese are a good idea, as is the cold seafood tower with lobster claws, tiger shrimp, oysters, cured salmon, and tuna sashimi. How's the service? The open-air kitchen is located just steps from your table, and tapas come flying out as quickly as you can gobble them up. And the only drink you might wait a few minutes extra for is The Dock’s Ridiculous Bloody Mary—a $99 monstrosity served in a fish bowl that comes garnished with jumbo shrimp, a slider, and a slab of prime rib in addition to the usual suspects. So why would you recommend the Dock? There are few open-air bars in Bermuda that have picture-perfect sunset views so close to the water—and live music, to boot. Fortunately, this is one of them.
