Yelp
TL;DR -- I saw a corpse in the lobby, amongst other issues. Give it a pass unless there's nothing else available in town.
There's no two ways about it: this is a bad hotel, and I regret staying here. I had a famously subpar experience at an America's Best Value Inn in New Mexico 10 years ago. So bad that, after checking out in the middle of the night, I swore never to say at any "____'s Best Value Inn" location ever again. I wish I'd kept that commitment...
I stayed at the Downtown Hotel twice on my trip (both times in the Annex building), both pre- and post-Dempster Highway. This review reflects on both experiences.
THE PROS:
- It is, as advertised, downtown and very centrally located. Probably more convenient than any other accommodation option in Dawson City.
- Guests get two good coupons: one for 10% off at the Jack London Grill, and one BOGO drink coupon at the Sourdough Saloon.
- The rooms come with a free postcard. Nice touch.
THE CONS:
- Not the hotel's fault per se, but one afternoon when leaving, I was greeted in the foyer by three cops and the town coroner hauling a bodybag out to the street. No precautions to at least try to shield guests from seeing. My girlfriend was a bit more traumatized than me after seeing from our street-facing window the corpse heaved into the bed of a pickup truck. With obvious COVID concerns, I wanted to be sure nothing disease-related had happened, but I was rudely brushed off by the front desk. Not the best way to start our trip.
- The fan didn't work in one of the two rooms, and the exterior windows don't stay open. Bring a log or a brick to prop them up if you want fresh air (no AC).
- Dawson's local homeless population likes to congregate around the Annex building, so if you like BO, marijuana smoke, and shouting until well after midnight, you're in luck! Several of them also cram into the lobby to play an arcade game and their collective body odour could be smelled well into the hotel. Maybe put up a no loitering sign at the least?
- The floors squeak, badly. The building's over 100 years old so it can be somewhat forgiven but be warned: if you are staying on the second floor, every step you take will make a noise; and if you're on the ground floor, you will hear every step the person above you makes. Not exactly ideal.
- Cleaning procedures didn't seem very thorough. The inside of the shower curtain in one room, for example, was coated in what looked and felt like tree sap or maple syrup. How do you miss that? Other smaller issues: hairs in the shower, poorly cleaned toilets, someone's half-full bottle of Gatorade left behind in our minifridge.
- Small bugs in both rooms, likely entering through the large cracks around the front door.
- The friendliness of the staff was hit-and-miss -- trust me, you wouldn't be smiling either if you worked here. But at the very least make eye contact with me when I'm checking in and asking you questions about the hotel and Dawson City.
