I recently stayed at The Downtown, a Coast Hotel, for two nights while traveling to and from Whitehorse from Inuvik. I was thoroughly impressed with the hotel's charm, cleanliness, and cozy atmosphere, which had a lovely old European vibe. The staff were incredibly kind, approachable, and easy to talk to, making my stay even more enjoyable. The bed and pillows were absolutely luxurious, and I loved the amenities in the bathroom, including the organic lotion, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. It's great to see that the hotel is going green! The hotel's location is also a major plus, being close to many great restaurants. Overall, I had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend The Downtown, a Coast Hotel, to others.

The room is newer and better then I thought. The only issue are 1. there's no lift so no heavy baggage - normally we don't 2. there's a bar with loud music on ground floor

Great stay. Room was clean and they put a mobile AC unit in the room wich was great. The historical ambiance is oddly refreshing. A nice 'change' to not change it's character. Shower was hot-cold. Literally would burn one second and then be ice cold the next. (Hence 4 stars) I didn't interact with any staff, but they seemed friendly. I would stay here again. The Sour Dough saloon is just downstairs. Home of the Sour toe cocktail.

Rooms in their Annex wing have no ventilation. The one window opens to an internal courtyard. Room was hot and stuffy and incredibly noisy late and early the next day. The window cannot even be locked so your gear is not secure. Room itself is fine but would never stay here again. Housekeeping also won't do anything on their daily rounds if you leave even a tiny item on a bed.

Great location, walking distance to my most attractions in the city. The room and bathroom were clean, though the hallway is pretty humid and a bit smelly (like dog smell) - possibly due to humidity. No smell at all in the bedroom and bathroom.

Good location. Front desk staff are not on the same page. One can extend my stay, one cant (I had to extend twice for work). One knows how the room cards work but the next guy doesnt. You have to go to next door hotel to get check in cards so its a bit of a hassle. Get off work and card doesnt work and also no one is at front desk. Waited 10 mins in front of the back in 5 mins sign. I think they can do better than there currently doing. Corporations buy the little businesses and its easy to see the cuts to make those big profits. Good location though so can go get a beer while I wait for staff to come back to work.

Positive: Location Negative: Upon check in and paying full price for a room, the front desk girl assigned us to the Annex. The Annex is low budget worker housing! There?s no AC, remote controls had no batteries, fans barely moved, towels were paper thin and it smelled.

We were happy to find the Downtown Hotel to spend one night in Dawson City. It was nice, clean with rooms on the smaller side. Nice and quiet and room darkening curtains too. Highly recommend the saloon that’s attached. Good food and the hubby’s had to try the Sour Toe cocktail. |Very walkable city and you feel as though you’ve gone back in time.

Yelp
Stayed here two nights during our 12 day Collette tour of the Alaska-Yukon in the town built on gold. In 1898 Dawson City was the second largest city west of the Mississippi. Today this hotel is probably the only place in this small town of 1375 that could accommodate our tourist bus load of 41 passengers requiring 23 rooms. Wife and I in our mid 60s, but among the younger of this group of largely seniors, many of whom can't handle too many stairs. And this place has loads of stairs, and no elevator, so you can guess where our room was -on the top floor! Old fashioned building probably built in the 1898 gold rush, newly painted in red, with white trim. Modern bright lighted lobby. Steep wooden stairs to the second floor. Open the door to a very narrow but long unit, 8.5' x 25'. Room to fit two comfortable queen beds facing a 34" flat screen TV. Mobile box AC and mini frig, but no microwave and no electronic safe. No room for a closet and no room to spread out our open suitcases, except on the extra bed. Single window facing the street below. Blackout curtains not sufficiently closed to keep out the light in the land of the midnight sun. It never gets dark in the summer. Bathroom with bath/shower combination straight out of the 1970s. Free hotel wifi, but insecure and yelp web site subject to outside hackers. Use at your own risk! Located right in the center of town, with a dozen restaurants within a 5 minute walk. Sixth day of our tour, and people starting to need to wash clothes, as we only packed so much underwear and socks in our carry ons. They have two washers and two dryers downstairs, but restrict their use to daytime only, so as to not disturb neighboring rooms. Allow two hours to wash and dry. No way all 23 families on this trip were going to get their clothes washed. Requires Canadian $2 in coins to operate. Downstairs in the local pub they have a sensational piano player named Dwayne Kelley, trained in London England at one of the foremost piano schools in the world, who plays 7pm-9pm nightly. How he ended up in Dawson City, Yukon, one of the most isolated towns in the world, I don't know. Kudos to the Jamaican lady behind the desk who helped me out using the hotel laptop and the employee microwave to heat up our Chinese food leftovers! Local entertainment is buying a drink at the bar with the Hotel's mummified human toe in your drink touching your lips!

Yelp
TL;DR -- I saw a corpse in the lobby, amongst other issues. Give it a pass unless there's nothing else available in town. There's no two ways about it: this is a bad hotel, and I regret staying here. I had a famously subpar experience at an America's Best Value Inn in New Mexico 10 years ago. So bad that, after checking out in the middle of the night, I swore never to say at any "____'s Best Value Inn" location ever again. I wish I'd kept that commitment... I stayed at the Downtown Hotel twice on my trip (both times in the Annex building), both pre- and post-Dempster Highway. This review reflects on both experiences. THE PROS: - It is, as advertised, downtown and very centrally located. Probably more convenient than any other accommodation option in Dawson City. - Guests get two good coupons: one for 10% off at the Jack London Grill, and one BOGO drink coupon at the Sourdough Saloon. - The rooms come with a free postcard. Nice touch. THE CONS: - Not the hotel's fault per se, but one afternoon when leaving, I was greeted in the foyer by three cops and the town coroner hauling a bodybag out to the street. No precautions to at least try to shield guests from seeing. My girlfriend was a bit more traumatized than me after seeing from our street-facing window the corpse heaved into the bed of a pickup truck. With obvious COVID concerns, I wanted to be sure nothing disease-related had happened, but I was rudely brushed off by the front desk. Not the best way to start our trip. - The fan didn't work in one of the two rooms, and the exterior windows don't stay open. Bring a log or a brick to prop them up if you want fresh air (no AC). - Dawson's local homeless population likes to congregate around the Annex building, so if you like BO, marijuana smoke, and shouting until well after midnight, you're in luck! Several of them also cram into the lobby to play an arcade game and their collective body odour could be smelled well into the hotel. Maybe put up a no loitering sign at the least? - The floors squeak, badly. The building's over 100 years old so it can be somewhat forgiven but be warned: if you are staying on the second floor, every step you take will make a noise; and if you're on the ground floor, you will hear every step the person above you makes. Not exactly ideal. - Cleaning procedures didn't seem very thorough. The inside of the shower curtain in one room, for example, was coated in what looked and felt like tree sap or maple syrup. How do you miss that? Other smaller issues: hairs in the shower, poorly cleaned toilets, someone's half-full bottle of Gatorade left behind in our minifridge. - Small bugs in both rooms, likely entering through the large cracks around the front door. - The friendliness of the staff was hit-and-miss -- trust me, you wouldn't be smiling either if you worked here. But at the very least make eye contact with me when I'm checking in and asking you questions about the hotel and Dawson City.

Yelp
Cool historic hotel in the heart of Dawson City. Great staff upon checkin and at Jack London Grill. Order homemade burgers , salad, fries and BLT sandwich.

Yelp
I was having travel issue and the staff were all uniformly extremely helpful making my troubles less. Lots of stairs and not dark enough curtains for the light night were the only bad things.

Yelp
How can I possibly be the FIRST to Yelp this place? C'mon, my Yelping travelers! Anyhow, it's a super laid back locale full of international travelers. Most of whom haven't showered recently. Present company included. The waitress (the cutie with the dragon tat on her forearm), who was also the bartender, and local "welcome to Dawson City" representative, could not have been cooler. She was managing dozens of loud, unwashed, unruly guests and smiled the entire time. She informed us that she couldn't serve us the Signature Cocktail as the "Sour Toe Captain" (no kidding) arrived after 9pm and it was a "complicated affair." We had a burger and a few local beers. A very good experience overall. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at the Downtown Hotel last week. We arrived on a rainy Sunday night, about 10 pm, wondering if we would find a place to stay. After several "no vacancy" stops, we arrived at the Downtown Hotel. Yes, rooms available, and we were quickly checked in. We liked the room -bigger than others we'd had in Dawson - bed comfy(neither too soft nor too firm) - and internet service was very good. Room was clean and fairly quiet, with street noise quieting down before we turned in for the night. A good night's sleep. Would definitely stay here again.
