10 Best Places for Brunch in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"At East Ender, orders like the smoked hake chowder are deceptively simple, teeming not with a deluge of dairy (as so many are), but with the smoky, briny flavors of fresh, local fish. Even the burger isn’t some perfunctory staple; rather, it’s a patty of local beef cold-smoked in-house, on a schmaltz-slathered bun with Monterey Jack. On weekend days, the place becomes a brunch temple with plates of duck confit hash with poached eggs and light-as-a-feather homemade doughnuts." - Alexandra Hall

This is hands down the most atmospheric karaoke bar I’ve ever been to! 💎 The vibe is electric, the crowd is alive, and every corner of the place just feels like music. What truly made the night unforgettable was the karaoke manager — incredibly warm, welcoming, and full of positive energy. They created the perfect environment for everyone to feel like a star. I didn’t want the night to end! If you’re looking for a place where music meets magic, this is it. 🫶

Google
This was a little gem to stumble upon!!! Initially we were a tad confused on how to get to the restaurant which was actually upstairs. RUN, don’t walk… to the smash burger!!!! YOU GUYSSSS….. best burger ever… with like homemade pickles? Amazing. The fries and crispy potatoes paired with the star of it all, AMAZING homemade ranch! And a pickle. I already can’t wait to go again!

Google
Sat at the bar for dinner. Got the smash burger, sooo good. One of the best burgers ever. Bartender was super nice great to talk to in between bites. Will definitely be back!

Google
Walked in and found this great spot near the hotel we like in Portland. Eclectic menu and some great cocktails. Deep fried deviled eggs were good, dry rub wings also stand out. Service was amazing upstairs considering she was alone and it was nearly a full house.

Google
3-4 Small raised tables and bar with upstairs karaoke spot at night. Great food, we went because of menu online and it did not disappoint! Fresh lemonade not too sweet and the biggest and best chicken sandwich I've had in a long time!! Very unique finish with the curry mustard. Mom had the Fish Fry and the potatoes were amazing and not overly salty. Server was patient and kind. Will definitely go back!

Google
Fun and funky. Great smash burgers. Super nice staff. Good vibes - we were there during karaoke, we were upstairs and couldn’t even hear the singing, on the way out found a very enthusiastic karaoke crowd.

Delicious mushroom stroganoff!! Garlic bread was good and fish sandwich amazing!! The waitress/bartender was super friendly and nice.

Delicious food and friendly staff, I’d recommend giving this place a try!!

Yelp
On Monday June 16th we unexpectedly packed the bar with people who were all rowdy on our first day off of the summer season. The staff were all so kind despite the rush. The vibes were perfect! All the other customers invited us in even though the bar became so crowded. It was the best night ever.

Yelp
Smashburger good. Best ever? No. Worth the price? No. But pretty good. I heard that the menu changed and the old burger was so good, that it was written up in several of those online publications that of course the editors know everything about. I went during off hours, but tables were still occupied. Including entitled people who need a whole extra table for their wallet and phone. Ask for a side of mayo, and you get an entire bowl. Nice.

Yelp
The room is small but the vibes are huge. However the service is... pretty bad. Unless you give them large tips, they act like a mean girl bully from high school. I was told I couldn't sing unless I personally paid the bartender. I literally spent money in their lounge but nope, the downstairs bartender just doesn't like me. Never tried the food.

Yelp
I was stopping in Portland for a girls trip and we were having a tough time finding a place that could seat us quickly for lunch. We ended up at East Ender and they were able to seat our group of 3 immediately which was awesome!! We were seated in the upstairs area which was super cute. We loved the vibes here with the string lights and moody decor. Our server was also super nice and checked in on us as needed. To start, we split a few oysters which were so crisp and briny! The rock potatoes were also so delicious and I loved the aioli they came with. We also got a pitcher of margs which were pretty standard. For my entree, I had a fish chowder. It was super hearty and I loved the dill seasoning. Overall, great lunch at East Ender!

Yelp
We decided on the East Ender for lunch because we trying a couple other restaurants for lunch and the wait was crazy for a table for 3!! But East Ender sat us immediately which was the absolute best We sat in their upstairs area which was nice and quaint and our server was nice. We order a couple oysters to start which were great and briney!! We also got some rock potatoes and the special sauce was perfect with them. For my entree I got the lobster roll which was interesting because it was in a binning but still stunning. It was filled to the brim with lobster and delicious. East Ender killed it!

Yelp
Drinks are great. Deviled eggs are good! Chill environment and definitely cozy. Very friendly, too!

Yelp
The East Ender! This is by far my favorite underrated hidden gem in Portland, Maine. When I moved to Portland a little over a year ago I really wanted to dive into more casual spots verses Portlands mainstream places like solo, via, scales etc. This place took the cake and will continue to be a favorite of mine. They have "rock fries" which are potato's that are broken up and fried to perfection! Their salads are amazing especially the Caesar. The mushroom stroganoff is a must try! Honestly, I have had every dish offered on the menu in the last year and I was incredibly surprised with how great each one is. The most stand out dishes to me are the burger, fried deviled eggs, chicken nuggets, wings, salads, and the stroganoff. If you are looking to find a table when the rest of town is slammed, The East Ender is the place to go! Not to mention their super fun nightlife, amazing staff and local owner. The best place to get on the mic for karaoke which is literally every night!

Yelp
Food was delicious. Great place in Portland if you're looking for something to do at 8pm for karaoke.
google avatar

Susana C.

Yelp
Great place, they have a few high table downstairs with a small bar with karaoke. Upstairs is the Restaraunt which is a little dark but quirky with a unique ambiance. Menu is small but they offer plenty of GF options which is hard to find. i will say though the food was phenomenal. Only reason I gave it a 4 star rating is there was only one waitress in the floor and at times we didn't see her for awhile making it impossible for refills. Parking was easy, there was parking right along the street.

Yelp
We had an enjoyable time at the East Ender restaurant and bar in Portland, Maine. We had drinks and snacks here while waiting for our table at nearby Eventide Oyster Co. The East Ender serves oysters too, but since we were visiting from out of town and had already made plans to go to *the* oyster place in Portland, we stuck with Eventide. On a Saturday around 6:35pm, there was a two-hour wait for the only big table inside Eventide. There was no wait for us at the East Ender. We had a group of eight. We stayed here for over 1.5 hours. During that time, I saw several walk-ins have to wait or rethink their dinner decisions. This place is popular too. It's generally first come, first served, but unlike Eventide, you *can* make a reservation (via Resy). This place had a really cool, hip vibe. We sat in the first room, the one with the bar. It had disco balls, half-chrome bulbs, and aqua, green, purple, and red ambient lighting. Good music too. Our large group sat at a unique combination table and bar with a banquette and stools. It worked out well. We had a variety of drinks and a couple orders of the Popcorn Chicken ($13), described on the menu as "fried chicken sprinkled with magic dust served with special sauce." Whatever it was, it was delicious. The portion sizes were generous. The chicken was meaty and tasty. The special sauce was some sort of mayo-based sauce or aioli. Hell, I don't know. It was topped with chopped chives. I got the non-alcoholic cocktail, Hip to be Square ($9), made with pineapple, cardamom, and lime. It was sweet and tangy, delectable and refreshing. I recommend it. The East Ender serves all sorts of drinks, including $32 cocktail pitchers, and has a decent food menu with things you'd expect to find in Maine like the aforementioned oysters, a "Lazy Lobster Roll" ($28), and a "Fish Fry" ($22) made with deep-fried pollock. Happy hour is seven days a week, 3-6pm, and features $7 cocktails and wine by the glass. There is karaoke every night. Check out East Ender on social media for current hours, specials, events, and more. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/eastenderrestaurant Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theeastenderportland Service from the hostess and our server was great. Our server was mindful of our wait time for Eventide and timed our orders accordingly. We appreciated that.

Yelp
The food here is delicious, the upstairs bar is sooo dark and cozy and has truly remarkable ambiance, and the staff are all awesome. This place is a lot more than a karaoke bar and is definitely worth checking out

Yelp
Go here for happy hour whenever in town. Great oysters. Fantastic menu for such a small place. I highly recommend it! Secret. Quiet bar with good music upstairs. Great service

Yelp
What a beautiful, woodsy, whimsical upstairs surprise in this tiny spot. We wondered in here while waiting for our reservation at a nearby restaurant. While we waited we ordered an appetizer, one meal and four drinks. Service was kind and spot on with our orders. We enjoyed everything and made our reservation next door in time. Would recommend and would return.

Yelp
Came here with a big group (7) for dinner on a Friday night during the off season in early March. We were seated right away upstairs which was extremely convenient. We ordered a few of the mojito pitchers for all of us which were really good. Each of us ordered appetizers for ourselves. I got the sunchoke dip and the rock potatoes. The sunchoke dip was interesting and thick in texture. The flavor was okay but maybe missing a little spice. The rock potatoes were AWESOME, really well seasoned and the dipping sauce complemented it really well. Super cute vibe and watching the karaoke at night was a fun way to end the night!!

Yelp
Omg had so much fun here! Karaoke, good food, amazing cocktails, great crowd. Can't wait to go back!!

Yelp
All I have to say is that this place (in a way) epitomizes the Portland, ME people. Tucked away, next to one of the most famous restaurants in Portland (Duck Fat), is an inauspicious storefront. The first floor of which is a crammed (but electric) karaoke stage every night! And upstairs is a restaurant with a trendy menu and friendly staff! I see the potential for this place to be overwhelmed when at max capacity (but that's also only based off the staffing numbers that I experienced).
google avatar

Gaby H.

Yelp
Awesome place for a quick pre-dinner drink. I am from Florida and was on vacation passing through Portland. I was extremely surprised to see a Michelada on a menu in Maine. It was spicy (just to my liking) and they give you the extra Modelo to top off your drink, so it's not going to waste. They also have karaoke downstairs so a great place to let loose with some friends.

Tess A.

Yelp
Love East Ender. if you don't feel like you *need* seafood then go here instead of eventide.
google avatar

Hiram M.

Yelp
Great food and awesome vibe. The waitress was friendly and helpful offering other places to experience in the city while staying in Portland.
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
The have both a bar downstairs and upstairs, we went upstairs due to the busyness of the downstairs bar. They have karaoke every night but in tight quarters. We got the burger and the chicken bites. They were okay but not amazing. They have a pretty limited menu. If you want to go to see the karaoke get there early cause there is only a few seats.
google avatar

Tommy B.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick dinner. We sat upstairs. We ordered the smash burger and the risotto. I ordered the double smashburger. The bun was very fresh but it only came with 1 patty instead of 2. So basically i jist tasted bread and lettuce. The risotto was good. There was a guy that cane over and said they were having a party coming in 90 minutes so they needed the table. Definitely tried to rush us out. He came back and tried to clean the plates away and we were not finished. Disappointing....
google avatar

Charles M.

Yelp
Slowest bar service I have ever seen! It was like a Seinfeld episode. It took forever to take our order, which was a wine and a cocktail. Our bartender said she wasn't the bartender, but nobody else was either. The mixed drink took forever, as they had to make it downstairs. It's ironic, they are next door to one of the best restaurants in Portland, which I won't name. That'll all I got!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Cool vibe while we waited to get into Duckfat. We ordered the deviled eggs (recommended) and some toddy's. Very reasonable prices complete with a disco ball.
google avatar

Cali B.

Yelp
I was quite hungry upon arriving to Portland, and needed to find a good meal ASAP! I heard good things about DuckFat (which is next door), but the line was too long so I popped into The East Ender. Inside the vibe is similar to a club, with colourful neon lights backlighting the bar and thus the whole restaurant. The food menu isn't enormous, but the drink list is and they all look amazing! As I said, I was hungry upon arrival and a bit sad to see a $30 Lobster Roll or a few salads... Reluctantly I ordered the Grilled Salad and OH MY GOSH! It was DELICIOUS! There isn't a whole lot of space inside, as there are three tables and bar seating available inside, and two tables outside. Food and drinks do come quick though
google avatar

Curtis M.

Yelp
Super cute ambiance, I see you with lots of cool German food options. Definitely have the bartender put in work covering the whole restaurant.
google avatar

Cathy S.

Yelp
Great little bar and restaurant. Friendly staff great drinks. Try the fried deviled egg!! They are amazing. The crab dip was awesome too. This place is a gem.
google avatar

Brendan W.

Yelp
Don't be fooled when you walk in. They have an entire upstairs (and it's got a cooler atmosphere up there). Had the Rib Sandwich, which was very good, and also the rock potatoes that come with it. I have no idea how they got those so crispy, but they were like potato chip chunks. Staff was super friendly. Had a cocktail, three dots and a dash, which was also very good. Now comes my favorite part...I was about to leave when happy hour started (3pm). Got 6 oysters for 6 bucks, plus that cocktail was $8 instead of $12. Left very satisfied and would recommend for sure.

James S.

Yelp
Love $1 oysters happy hours here. Great food choices for such a small place! When in town I try to hit this place twice a week
google avatar

Olivia R.

Yelp
We stopped in on a whim (lured in by the 1/2 priced lobster roll sign) and were really pleasantly surprised. The food was great- we had lobster rolls with the "rock" potatoes and enjoyed the magic dust seasoning. Our cocktails came out quickly (also reasonably priced at $8 each) and the bartender was attentive and helpful. We would definitely come back the next time we're in town.
google avatar

Yelp
Similar to a lot of other reviews, we stumbled on East Ender when other nearby restos had a long 1.5-2 hour wait. Glad we did! Outdoor seating was covered by tarp and thoroughly warmed by heat lamps. Impressed by attention to cleanliness - tables were socially distanced and cleaned between patrons, everyone wore masks and didn't get too close and menus were regularly cleaned. Got the kale salad w hake (salad was plentiful and probably didn't need the extra protein!), brussel sprouts which were flavorful and crunchy and the boy got the fish and chips served w triple fried fries and squash spaghetti. On a chilly night, we both got the hake chowder which was a nice, warm and lighter alternative to thick clam chowder. Great local beer selection too! Portland reco!

Yelp
I popped into The East Ender while waiting for a table at Duckfat. I was surprised to find the it was the tiniest Karaoke bar I'd ever seen. The "stage" is literally right in front of the door. My husband and I shuffled past the singer to get to the little bar. We didn't check out the upstairs at all. We were welcomed to pull up a chair by a friendly man with a mustache (who ended up being on the the hosts). The bartender gave us a couple of menus promptly and served up our drinks quickly. The hubs got a beer, and I order a Lefty Lemonade. The cocktail wasn't anything special--just lemonade and whiskey. The Deep Fried Deviled Eggs though... mmmm! This little pre-dinner snack made it a worth while spot to hang out while we waited for our dinner table next door... even if we had to watch and listen to some boring karaoke sessions from just a small handful of singers opting to sing obscure oldies.

bonita n.

Yelp
We enjoyed our drinks and salad seated outdoors. My Hip to Be Square mocktail wasn't too sweet or too bitter.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
We came across this place accidentally while in Portland and sat down for a drink and some mussels. It ended up being the best place we ate in Portland! The drinks were delicious and the mussels and bread were some of the best I've had. The waiter was very friendly and helpful when asking about allergies.

Yelp
Thank you. The staff was so friendly and attentive to our group. We were actually six that night. So it was a huge adjustment to fit us in for sure. We had a little tour of the space. They have great seating in both floors. A full bar on each floor as well. The space is perfect for an intimate seating and for groups. Just a great vibe all around. The menu is eclectic and appealed to all members of our group. The burgers are quite popular and were a hit with two in our group. The Stew was new for me and was very tasty. The other meals which varied were also a huge hit. All were happy. The evening was a hit all around and it was a perfect way to end our Friday. Kudos to the staff for being top notch. Had a blast.
google avatar

Haley M.

Yelp
You must try the deviled eggs. Seriously. Amazing. The matcha matcha man shot just wasn't our thing. Matcha and liquor just don't mix well in my book. You can't go wrong with a lobster roll. And the vibe was it. Makes you feel like you fit right into the scene.
google avatar

Ione H.

Yelp
Popped into East Ender for a drink and a snack. Got a table upstairs and were served fairly quickly. Ordered the Island Time cocktail and the Lefty Lemonade for drinks. Lefty was a lemonade whiskey sitch and wasn't super impressive - just tasted like lemonade with booze, but it tasted good and strong. Island Time was also strong but nothing impressive. For our snack we snagged the fried deviled eggs, and these were the star of the show. Did not think I would enjoy a hot egg but the crispy coating and the creamy egg perfectly complimented the tangy shallot jam. If you get anything, get these eggs. The drinks left a bit to be desired and could probably use a bit more innovation, but this is a good place to stop in if you're hungry and want to be a little tipsy.

Trina M.

Yelp
50% off lobster rolls for happy hour was awesome. Lobster was chilled and $15 and a great taste. Light and delicious. Attentive service. Great little hole in the wall place.
google avatar

Kevino C.

Yelp
Great dinner in Portland, Atmosphere was vibey and a great place to take friends. Karaoke on the first floor as well. Service was excellent and our server was extremely nice. Definitely pricey but its Portland. Popcorn chicken ($13) was crispy and very flavorful. The more mellow special sauce went well with the spices on the chicken. Fish fry ($21) was a hefty piece and delicious as well. The purple cabbage slaw was a great palette cleanser. The acidity of the vinaigrette paired well with the savoriness of the fried fish and potatoes. They were a little too oily but delicious nonetheless. Overall, a great dinner and a great experience. We left very satisfied with our meals. Only thing I would say is that everything costs too much but if you are looking for a fun place to eat with friends and saving money is not your top priority, this is the place! I highly recommend!
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
We ended up here because the other restaurants on the street required a 1.5-3.5 hour wait. An overall positive experience: (+) Drinks are nice and strong. (+) The mussels in the Thai chili sauce had the taste of a thinner curry. It was absolutely delicious with the mussels and we ordered more grilled bread just to sop up all the goodness. Mussels, as per usual, didn't really fill me up completely. (An extra side of 3 slices of bread is $3) (+) No wait at all when we went, but the food was just as good as some other places on the same block. (+) Menu is a 1 pager, which is great for an indecisive soul like me.

Yelp
After looking at new places to try dining at, we found glowing reviews about East Ender. Unfortunately most reviews have not been updated since their original posting. What once was a restaurant with good food was downsized to small bar food. Even after seeing the pandemic changes and limited menu, we decided to try it out and give the restaurant a fair chance. I ordered the Smash Burger which I enjoyed. My partner also ordered the same burger but his was burned. Our check ended up being around $53 after food, 2 drinks, and a cash tip. We left hungry and a bit disappointed. Overall please sort by "Most Recent" and read about the changes. Many locally written articles have not been updated and you will be disappointed as a result.

Yelp
This place is more like a 3.5/5 stars. I bumped it up to 4 stars since the manager name is also Jeff... Lol We wanted to check out eventide for their late night happy hour, but when we got there they told us that they didn't have the late night menu anymore... So we bounced across the street to this place. It was past 9, and people were finishing up, but we got seated right away upstairs. We ordered mainly snacks and appetizers and four plates were more than good enough for two people. We got the wings, hake chowder, pretzel, and mussels. Out of the four, the hake chowder and mussels were the best. I didn't think the pretzel and the wings were worth it. However, the hake chowder and mussels were phenomenal. The hake chowder was really tasty... I do wish they added more hake.. The mussels were really interesting since they soaked it with a thai curry. Never had it like that before but we really enjoyed it. There's plenty of parking on the street, and if you park after 6pm, it's free.
google avatar

Cathy S.

Yelp
We saw a big line at the Duckfat thank goodness because the East Ender we were heading for was open. We ordered and recommend the lobster roll with or without the bun. I tried the fried boiled eggs and loved them. Our server was awesome. Well worth the lunch off of a cruise ship.
google avatar

Shelley H.

Yelp
Service was great, food was good. My favorite item was the fried Brussel Sprouts. The mussels were a tad underdone but flavorful. Wish I had tried the Smoked Ad burger! House smoked sausage with homemade whole grain mustard was YUMMY!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Went in there for a quick drink hoping the rain wound let up. Luckily it was hour and we only paid $8 per drink because they were not great. My mojito didn't have any mint in it and I'm pretty sure it came from a can. The staff were somewhat friendly but overall I'd pass

Yelp
(3.5 stars) I ended up at East Ender during my recent Portland trip when the other popular restaurants in the area had up to 6 hours waits (seriously!). My boyfriend and I ended up waiting about an hour for a table. The menu here is pretty standard new American food (brussel sprouts, burgers, salads, pasta, etc). We were pretty disappointed when our server told us the 2 items we wanted to order, the New England chowder and the ricotta gnocchi, were sold out. We ended up sharing Fried Chicken platter, the Kale Salad, the Fried Brussel Sprouts and the Small Ace Burger. While the food was pretty good, none of the dishes really stood out to me. I ordered the Brussel sprouts as they seemed like a popular item, but they ended up tasting a bit bland. Overall, East Ender is a decent place with a pleasant atmosphere. The food here is good but definitely not at the same level as other nearby restaurants.
google avatar

Tetsu C.

Yelp
While waiting for a table at the restaurant next door my partner and I decided to give East Ender a try since they did not have a wait time. The friendly host took us to our table and brought us water and menu right away. The burger and chowder we ordered was great although the fries stole the show. Their cocktails and mocktails was excellent! Overall I feel East Ender is a great restaurant but it left me head scratching on why the lack on patrons compare to neighboring restaurants.
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
The post-pandemic East Ender is a big change and disappointment from the wonderful restaurant that was here before. The current menu has only two entrees of pub food, where East Ender used to have a full menu of excellent dishes. Even those entrees were questionable; who deep fries pork chops north of the Mason-Dixon line? The chops were tough, and the swordfish was under-cooked and cold. There were several small dishes, of which we tried the beet salad which was acceptable but the only thing special about it was the croutons. East Ender is a bar now, instead of the 4-5 star restaurant we enjoyed so much.
google avatar

Mel T.

Yelp
*Review for drinks only* The sit-down tables are for dining only, but they do have these huge barrels and a few seats if you are just grabbing drinks (aka if you are waiting forever for Duckfat and need to kill some time). Our party of five was able to grab one of these barrels on a Sunday at around 8. I had the Bee's Knees cocktail, which I think was some kind of vodka and honey concoction (not very memorable), which was too sweet for my taste. So if you like sweet cocktails, you will love East Ender. Otherwise just stick to beer or wine.
google avatar

Yelp
Big fan of this place, upon entering they have a bar downstairs and dining area upstairs with another bar as well. The dining area is not too large but nicely decorated and gave me a Christmas vibe while being inside. We were recommended the fried hard boiled eggs that were amazing. Came out looking like fancy McDonald's nuggets. My girlfriend got the Maine mussels that were absolutely incredible. The broth at the bottom of the mussels was some of the best I've had, i could not get enough bread to dunk at the end. My swordfish steak was pretty amazing as well. With a savory lemon pesto sauce to go with it, i could only wish for a larger portion. The chowder was a hit also and a great starter. Can't wait to come back again and again next time I visit Portland.
