The Eatery Wood Fired Grill

We had such a lovely experience at The Eatery in Claremont! We ordered the tapas special — 3 plates for R250 — which is great value for sharing. The calamari, wings, and prawn & avo bruschetta were all delicious and perfectly cooked. We also shared a brisket bun with chips, which was tender and full of flavour. Since we were celebrating our wedding anniversary, the manager came over to congratulate us and surprised us with complimentary desserts — churros with chocolate sauce and ice cream, plus an apple crumble sundae. Such a thoughtful and heartwarming gesture! Great food, friendly service, and a wonderful atmosphere. Highly recommend for a relaxed meal or a special occasion.

Christmas lunch was extremely disappointing. We waited over 1 hour 15 minutes for food, and when it finally arrived, the starters came out at the same time as the mains, which shows a complete breakdown in service and kitchen coordination. The food itself didn’t justify the wait. The ribs tasted boiled rather than wood-grilled and were overloaded with sauce, leaving a lingering aftertaste. The mac & cheese was watery and bland, and the chicken burger arrived with no sauce at all, making it dry and unbalanced. To make matters worse, we were told to pay a compulsory 12.5% tip despite the poor service and food quality. A gratuity should reflect the experience not be enforced. Busy Christmas service is understandable, but this was poorly managed from start to finish. Left frustrated instead of festive. Not sure I will ever eat here again.

We originally came here thinking that those would be great wood fired pizzas here. Alas, no such luck. No pizzas. However the rest of the meat appears to be wood fired. We had a couple of chicken burgers and chicken empanadas which came hanging on its skewer. The chicken was done to perfection. Tender and juicy and not overcooked. The chocolate brownie and icecream was ok. The churros was absolutely to die for. They were soft and delicious. Definitely the best I have ever had.

Amazing food, great service, and a truly relaxing atmosphere. We loved our experience.

I loved our waitress energy. Very friendly service. We didn't even wait that long for our food. It happened very quickly. I had the Hangover burger and my friend had the Rump Steak. It was very good. Will definitely go back to try the other burgers and the prices of the menu were decent overall.

25/12/2025 - Christmas Day is meant to be special, but this turned into a complete nightmare. We arrived at 13:30 and only received our mains at 15:35. Starters took about 45 minutes, and after that the wait for mains was so long that we were honestly ready to leave. When the mains finally arrived, we had to ask the staff to start preparing dessert immediately, because we simply could not sit and wait another 45 minutes to an hour. That alone says a lot. The pricing is absolutely outrageous for the quality and service received. We were charged R650 per person, which excludes a R265 service fee, and then on top of that you are expected to tip 12.5% of the total bill. This is completely unreasonable given the excessive waiting time and overall experience. To make matters worse, one of my daughter’s side dishes never arrived, yet we still paid for it. There was no proper front-of-house management, and customers are not clearly informed about these charges before being seated. Yes, it’s “finely written” on the menu, but realistically no one is reading T&Cs on a menu on Christmas Day. It honestly felt like a trap. I’m not sure how this restaurant operates on normal days, but Christmas Day was a disaster. What should have been a joyful family meal turned into stress, frustration, and money wasted. Definitely not value for money. I would strongly advise avoiding this place on Christmas Day.

We visited today (Monday) for the burger special and it was amazing! Easily the best chicken burger I’ve had in ages. The restaurant has a clean and safe play area that my toddlers really enjoyed, and the staff were friendly and patient, especially with the kids. Highly recommend!

A pleasant and welcoming environment, my request was a contra File with fries, it was good, but the texture was not very pleasant, left a little to be desired.
