11 ways to enjoy Penang on your next visit - SilverKris

"A restored colonial mansion-turned-hotel that immerses guests in Peranakan patterned tilework, cast-iron columns and ornate bedroom headboards to evoke the city’s colonial past; its central location in George Town places cultural and heritage hotspots, including an iconic blue mansion and lively precincts like Little India and Chulia Street, within easy walking distance." - SilverKris

The traditional craftsmen of George Town in Penang - SilverKris

"A restored colonial‑era hotel on the northern edge of central George Town that has been given a new lease of life after years of decline (it formerly operated as the Cathay Hotel and even as a brothel). The renovation emphasizes airy interiors and period details—wrought iron, teak, marble and old tiles—to recapture the feel of old residential mansions, a vision promoted by the property's management as a sensitive revival rather than a wholesale remake." - Nicholas Walton

The Edison is a truly delightful boutique hotel. Set within a beautiful colonial mansion, it offers stylish, well-appointed rooms alongside elegant, luxurious shared spaces. The pool and its surroundings provide a peaceful retreat, perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. The lounge is a charming spot for breakfast and for enjoying the complimentary pre-dinner wine, cheese, and crackers. The staff are attentive and welcoming, and we especially appreciated Manager Albert Tan’s dedication to ensuring our stay was both comfortable and memorable.

“A Perfect Stay at The Edison Georgetown, Penang” My stay at The Edison Georgetown was absolutely delightful! This boutique hotel, set in a beautifully restored heritage mansion, blends history and modern comfort in the most elegant way. The rooms are spacious, tastefully designed, and impeccably decorated, with super comfortable beds and gorgeous bathrooms — every detail feels carefully thought out. The location couldn’t be better: right in the heart of Georgetown, with the famous Blue Mansion just next door and plenty of great restaurants and bars within walking distance. It’s also incredibly easy to get anywhere from here, whether you’re exploring the historic streets or heading out to other parts of Penang. The hotel’s swimming pool is beautiful — a calm and stylish oasis perfect for relaxing after a day out. I also loved the Edison Lounge, where breakfast is served. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, cold drinks, and light snacks — such a thoughtful touch that adds to the sense of comfort and hospitality. A special mention goes to Albert Tan, the Operational Manager, who was exceptionally attentive and kind. He and his team went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect, offering fantastic recommendations for places to eat, visit, and explore — including less touristy local spots with amazing and affordable food (especially seafood!). I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. If I ever come back to Penang, I’ll definitely stay at The Edison Georgetown again. Highly recommended!

As people say, The Edison is so good because of its staff who cannot do enough for you. The location is right in the centre of George Town surrounded by loads of excellent bars and restaurants. A feature of the hotel is their air conditioned lounge with hot and cold drinks and snacks available to guests at any time. Also, every night at 6-7pm, they offer guests a glass of wine and plate of cheese. What a bonus! This is not a traditional high end hotel but an old fashioned one in every sense - an old colonial building and fabulous service.

We had absolutely fantastic 5-star stay (5D4N) at The Edison George Town. We’ve stayed in many luxurious hotels, small and big, but this boutique hotel and its service definitely outperfomed everything we’ve experienced before. Pretentious and slick isn’t our thing – here everything was truly genuine and warm, which blew us away. ||Guest rooms were understated yet beautiful. Ameneties simple but provided. Comfy bedding and linen, very firm mattress which we liked. We got a complimentary upgrade from Deluxe to slightly larger Premium Deluxe room. While our upgraded room had issues with the AC, the room exchange was handled with utmost professionality.||Hotel is very centrally located, and everything in George Town is reachable by feet. Nearby food stalls and bars cause noticeable noise all the way to the guest rooms in the most of the evenings until midnight. As we were on a vacation and stayed up until midnight anyways, this was no issue, but this is something to take note of. ||Breakfast was very simple but more than generous (made to order eggs are the way to go!) to get a fresh start to a day of experiencing the culinary heaven of George Town.||The 24/7 lounge was just fantastic – all hotels of this caliber should run a similar concept. The complimentary evening cocktails with light bites – another perfect touch. Pool area was well taken care of and felt like an oasis of calm. ||Wi-Fi worked but wasn’t really all that stable (might have been the thick walls etc). Also, in-room tech wasn’t necessarily up to date (eg. no streaming capabilities, hardly any tv-channels either), but this we could live with. ||Above all, this entire property provided a visually curated, beautiful experience in every morning and at every single arrival. The use of green color throughout the property was stunning. ||Mr. Albert Tan truly redeemed himself as the heart and soul of The Edison George Town with the rest of the team. I want to highlight that we have never been received anywhere in the world like we did here. Alberts welcoming and approachable personality, genuine interest in each guest and excellence as a hospitality specialist made a lasting impression on us. ||Even if our room exchange was a non-issue, Albert wanted to make up the trouble with a bottle of wine. Neither of us hardly drinks alcohol, so we kindly declined, although the gesture in itself meant a lot. What he did next was astonishing: the entire hotel (lounge and minibars) had been out of Coca-Cola Zero (which I consume daily) due to some logistics, but Albert dispatched a co-worker of his to get some for our minibar restock. Talk about service!||Do yourself a favor and stay here – we recommend The Edison George Town from the bottoms of our hearts. Finally a hotel where we would truly love returning to. ||Here luxury sets a new tone – no hierarchy, pretentiousness and suits & skirts, which typical luxury hotels are too often known for (even in our experience).||Travel will never, ever be the same after you experience what The Edison George Town has to offer.||We wish you all the best. Thank you.

We were really pleased about our stay in this hotel and would pick it again if coming back to Georgetown - the staff is incredibly attentive and corteous; always on top of us. The rooms are nice and it feels like a home, not like a corporate hotel. The lounge is exceptional with great snacks 24/7 and comfy chairs. I’d only say the noise from the karaoke in front of the hotel can definitely be heard from the room but I wasn’t that bothered by that. It might bother a light sleeper though.

17 of us booked in for a supper on our way down the A11 and only had 90 minutes for a good meal. It was fantastic. Our first time there and we WILL BE GOING AGAIN. ||Details had been arranged with Claire who had alerted her staff that we were on a tight turnaround. From Rachel's most warm welcome as we arrived right up until the moment we left the service was efficient, thoughtful & very pleasant. Noticeably & demonstrably so. The food was presented well, lots of it and tasted good. We had pre-ordered fish pie and mint torte with vanilla ice cream with tea & coffee to finish. ||Lots of appreciative murmurs & comments from our group. Unprompted. ||It was a lovely room they put us in. The atmosphere was positive, welcoming, fun.||We had been weary but this 90 minute event at The George re-vitalised us. Thank you Claire, Sheila and the Team.

Our second time here. This time around with a bigger group. The staff are always friendly and helpful. This time around we stayed on the ground floor. Bigger room and avoided the steep climb up the staircase. The location is the best, right next to Muntri Street and surrounded by many attractions and cute shops/cafes. You don't need a car to get around when you stay here. Grab taxi is most convenient. The kids loved the lounge and it's all they talk about, the free snacks and drinks. They're there day and night.

The Edison is a beautiful, historic hotel full of old-world charm. The building itself is impressive, though it's showing its age a little and could use some maintenance and a bit of love in places to truly shine. However, any minor shortcomings are completely overshadowed by the excellent staff. They are exceptionally well-trained, genuinely warm, and always eager to help. They provided fantastic recommendations for local eateries and hidden spots in Georgetown that we would have otherwise missed, which greatly enhanced our trip. Overall, a very pleasant stay thanks to the superb service. If you appreciate character over pristine modernity, this is a wonderful choice.

Yelp
We've now stayed at Edison George Town for 4 nights. We have found the staff to be very helpful including furnishing recommendations for places to eat: ask Albert. The hotel is in an excellent location with a bustling hawker food center across the street: open for dinner only. The lounge area ( available 24/7) for all guests is very comfortable. We use frequently to cool down and enjoy refreshments after a day of visiting Penang's sights. I highly recommend Edison George Town.

Yelp
Beyond pleased with the overall experience at the Edison boutique hotel in Georgetown on Penang Island in Malaysia. Big shout out to Albert Tan for the very warm welcome email providing an abundance of recommendations and relevant details on the best dining options around based on various preferences all clearly documented for my convenience upon arrival. These little gestures are really appreciated especially after a full day of travel. When my Uber pulled up to the hotel, Albert immediately greeted me and offered to assist me with my heavy belongings. Right after the check in process, the staff gave me a brief tour of the hotel even educating me on the history of this Peranakan mansion that's been renovated over the years with the core historical components kept in tact. Lounge access and complimentary breakfast are included in my stay with complimentary snacks and beverages throughout the day. The hotel room was extremely spacious, clean and comfortable considering the age of the building. It is situated a bit in the quieter part of town, but it is still within walking distance to many attractions. Catching a GrabCar is also convenient and affordable even if it is only a 5-min ride away.
