The Egyptian Museum in Cairo

The Egyptian Museum near Tahrir Square (not to be confused with the Grand Egyptian Museum) is definitely worth visiting. The collection is impressive and one of the highlights is the incredibly well-preserved mummies of the nobles Yuya and Thuya. During the week, the museum was not overcrowded. There were a few students visiting with their class for a project, but overall it was a comfortable experience without large tourist crowds. Tickets can be bought onsite.

Probably the most important museum of a great civilization. I have been to the museum in Athens (the "main museum" of the Greek civilization), but to be honest, the Egyptian Museum impressed me more. Of course, it’s enormous. So you either need a guide or you must know exactly what you want to see. After all, you can't embrace the unembraceable by definition -) Be prepared for incredible crowds of tourists, comparable to Rome in summer. There will be very many people. Still, everyone moves along fairly quickly, so you can see everything you need or want to. The exhibits… what can you say about a collection that has so many mummies they have dedicated an entire vast hall to them? And in that hall, they lie in stacks - yes, in niches from floor to ceiling. It is a stunning collection. And this is so even though many very important relics were taken to England when Egypt was a colony. Ticket payment is card‑only, so you need a card or a guide (willing to pay for the tickets). If you're in Cairo, you should of course visit the Pyramids of Giza first and foremost. And secondly, you absolutely must go to the Egyptian Museum. As I said, it’s one of the world's most astonishing museums - a memory of a great civilization that, alas, no longer exists.

You’re literally walking through thousands of years of history in one place. Some rooms feel almost chaotic, but that’s part of the charm, you realize how much Egypt has to show. Seeing things like royal statues, ancient jewelry, and historical pieces up close is very powerful. As a tip, go with a guide or hire an audio guide if you can. Without context, it’s easy to get lost or miss the importance of what you’re seeing. With explanations, the experience becomes 10x better. Don’t try to see everything. It’s impossible. Pick highlights and enjoy them calmly. Wear comfortable shoes, there’s a lot of walking and standing. It can get crowded, so early morning is best. Take breaks when needed; museum fatigue is real here. It’s not fancy or polished, but it’s real, historic, and deeply impressive. If you want to truly understand ancient Egypt, this museum is essential. Heavy, fascinating, and absolutely worth it.

Going to Cairo without visiting the Egyptian Museum is not a trip. Even though everyone is raving about the Grand Egyptian Museum now, the "old" one is more of a place where form and content are pleasantly congruent. Most important tip: be sure to book a tour guide, otherwise you'll miss the most beautiful exhibits.

The old Egyptian Museum is still absolutely worth visiting, even with the new museum in Giza. The collection is stunning—from Old Kingdom masterpieces to Greco-Egyptian works. The finds from Psusennes’ tomb, including the silver coffin, are especially unforgettable. My personal favorite was the statues of Akhenaten—beautiful, erotic, and rebellious all at once. The only real drawback is the lack of descriptions for many items. If you don’t already know Egyptian history, visiting with a guide would make the experience much more meaningful.

This was my favorite museum that we visited in Egypt! We went two days in a row. There are so so many things to see you really need to take your time to truly experience them all. The upstairs blew me away with the endless rows of sarcophagi! It’s a must see museum and the best part is with the GEM now open there are very few crowds.
