The 7 Most Haunted Hotels in America to Book This Halloween - AFAR

"The Elms Hotel and Spa, in Excelsior Springs, which is about a half-an-hour drive northeast from Kansas City. The town is known for its ferro-manganese mineral water hot springs, Siloam Spring, the only one of its kind in the country. During the late 1800s, Excelsior Springs became a wellness destination, with people traveling to soak in its therapeutic waters, which were said to have curative properties and even the power to heal tuberculosis. The original Elms Hotel and Spa was built in 1888, just down the road from its present location, to accommodate travelers from far and wide and visitors like President Harry S. Truman coming to Excelsior Springs. The original hotel burnt down in a fire in 1898 but was rebuilt at its current location in 1909. Ironically, the Elms burned down yet again in 1910, but was restored three months later using salvaged limestone and building materials from its second incarnation. The third rebuild, which underwent a $20 million renovation in 2012, is what stands today; it was purchased by Hyatt Hotels & Resorts in 2019. The hotel hit its stride during the 1920s, where it gained a reputation as an illicit speakeasy during Prohibition and became a playground for the rich and famous. Gangsters Al Capone and Bugsy Moran frequented the resort, as well as bank robber “Pretty Boy” Floyd—they’re said to have held illegal gambling and gin parties on the premises. There’s even a Capone Suite on the second floor of the Elms, his preferred hangout; the legendary mob boss liked being able to easily see who was arriving at the property and quickly duck out the back door if he needed to. Said to be haunted by several different ghosts, the Elms Hotel has such a spooky reputation that it was featured on the Syfy show Ghost Hunters in 2013. All of the spirits on the property, however, are friendly—for the most part. Rumor has it that one ghost started the fires that destroyed the Elms in 1898 and 1910. Some of the most frequently spotted apparitions include a gambler dressed in Prohibition era–style clothing (he hangs out near the lap pool) and a housekeeper wearing an old-fashioned uniform. The hotel offers a Paranormal Package, which includes a stay and two tickets to its nightly ghost tour—prices start at $250 per night. Tickets to the ghost tour start at $20 per person." - Mae Hamilton

We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary. Our couples massage was wonderful! Can not recommend the spa enough!! We had room service, ate at the tavern and the restaurant. Everything was exquisite! Food was perfection! Absolutely, everyone we encountered was friendly and could answer any questions we had. They made us feel welcome and comfortable! We will be back next year!

I see why it is described as a "Destination Hotel". For its age, it is very well maintained. The rooms are quite small, but some are quite nice. The staff were all extremely helpful and oozed customer service. I was there for business, so I stayed a week. Every day my bed was made, towels replaced, and trash removed. Most rooms lack a fridge and microwave, but some are available if you ask. I'm coming back to the area in another month, and I have already booked my room here again! Oh yeah, and it's haunted. There is a tour to prove it!

We enjoyed a wonderful 3 day stay! Staff is great! We loved the ambiance of the lobby. The happy hour spread on the fifth floor is great! Located near the Broadway area of town this hotel is ideal for exploring the wonders of Excelsior Springs

Wonderful hotel ambiance. We loved our room (we had a suite), the beds were great, the staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the spa, pool, and hot tub. We had a lovely Christmas Day brunch, too. The only disappointment was the quality of the food at the Three Owls restaurant. Waaaay to salty - all we could taste was salt! Watch out for that. We hope they improve that part.

My partner and I took a trip to the Elms as a reprieve during the busy holiday season and it was a great experience. The hotel itself is gorgeous and has such great history. There are multiple bars, a restaurant and a coffee shop/wine bar. Although we didn't make it to the restaurant, the coffee was wonderful and the staff we encountered during our stay were all so kind and welcoming. We took the ghost tour on a whim and it was fun to hear about the hotel's history from a different vantage point. Overall, our experience was great but when we arrived to our room, there were dirty glasses outside our door that remained in the hallway our entire stay and the massages were nothing to write home about. The spa experience was worth it, though. Access to the Grotto was a major plus.

This place has the most apologetic employees, and are very accommodating and willing to comp basically anything for issues. We had a couple drinks at the tavern, and although it was very crowded the employees in there did a great job with keeping up. However, we had lots of issues with our stay. We could not find any parking. Three trips around the parking lot and I finally found someplace to park. The room was okay, it had character which I liked. However the vent above the toilet in the bathroom was leaking. So we had water on our floor, and using the restroom while water is dripping on you is not fun. Thermostat was off. If you set it at 69 the place was holding at 65. If you set it at 70 it was going up to 75. No idea what that was about but it made it hard to be comfortable. Showered in the morning, and water was luke warm when it was as hot as it would go. There was a wedding and although I enjoyed the music and hope they had a blast, I really did not want to be up past midnight listening to it. They did comp our breakfast due to these issues. Next was the spa. I really enjoyed the Grotto. Next we were to get massages, and then the salt cave. They put us in the salt cave first, and then realized half way through we were to be in our massages. (we had even mentioned that our appt time for massages was at 3, and were confused on why we were doing the cave first) So we rushed to do our massages, which were cut very short since we couldn't go over our originally slotted time. We did go back to the salt cave and they gave us the full time but we were just disappointed and stressed, which is the opposite of what we were going for. They did comp part the salt cave and discounted the massage. Gave us free passes to go back to the grotto, and stuff to do facials at home, which was nice. I understand that the employee was new and was still learning how to read the schedule, and I really appreciate the care the employees showed with the issue. But, what was to be a nice relaxing weekend to celebrate a birthday and valentines day really just ended up being a disappointing experience because of the amount of issues we had.

The Elms was definitely a wonderful place to get married. The Hotel and Spa were beautiful and unique, which made it a destination wedding that all of our guests loved. The planning process was a fabulous experience with Tori, their wedding planner, who made it all so easy and fun for us. She was amazing with her ideas, attention to detail and to us, quick communication turnaround. She made us feel like our wedding was the only one she was handling, when in fact, there were others in the same time frame that she attended to just as committed. Tori should get best Wedding Planner of the Year award! Highly recommend having your wedding at The Elms!

I was very skeptical about staying at that haunted Elms hotel. Especially since we stayed on Halloween night! None of my friends were brave enough to go with me so I asked my mother. We booked the Presidential suite and indulged in the Three Owls for dinner and breakfast the next morning. Let’s say there were no disappointments with the service that the restaurant provided. The ghost tour with Jay was interesting and informative. I was impressed with all the historical information but Intimidated by the haunting nature of hotel. Since the tour was around 9pm and lasted an hour I couldn’t get right to sleep without thinking about what I just heard. How can I forget the young lady named Shannon at the first desk. She went above and beyond to make our stay better. The pictures she took of us were very nice even though later on I noticed green speckles in a few! We assumed that was a spirit of some sorts but nothing else paranormal occurred! Thank goodness and overall our experience was Phenomenal.
