Neat to see them in real life. It's just like the movie. Go at night, it's way creepier. I can definitely see these stairs killing some folks. Keep it up! 👍💪

Great way to exercise and strengthen your🦵's and increase your endurance. Just be mindful of the climb especially if you're a senior like myself. Btw, there are 75 🚶‍♂️ 🚶‍♀️!!

The staircase was built in 1895 during the construction of the adjacent streetcar shed (then the Capital Traction Company). It connects the higher Prospect Street with the lower M Street—due to the ~60-foot (~18 m) elevation difference, a regular road wouldn't be able to pass through. The staircase is famous as the location of the final scene in The Exorcist (1973): the hero falls down these steps. There are 75 steps in total.

It's fun because it was where the legendary stair from the movie... Other than that, nothing special .. just normal stairs... And I bet it will be dark on evening, quite eerie I guess haha

If you like visiting icon movie locations then you have to go here. Its just some stone steps but made iconic as used in the excorist. Not to busy while we were there. There is a small plaque at the foot of the steps.

Very fun to see this massive set of steps, just remember they are steep, so walking up them can be challenging. If you are disabled I recommend starting from the street above to look down, then make your way around to the bottom street to view the plaque at the bottom of the steps. Be aware that some streets nearby are similar to cobblestone, which may not be a great shortcut if you have different mobility needs. Can you believe they put rubber on the steps and the stunt actor fell down them TWICE for a good shot. Fun to imagine falling down them while at the top, I wouldn't do it even if there was rubber. Hope you enjoy your visit and you're able to take some good pics. We promise the area isn't spooky or haunted like in the movie, so we hope you'll visit. If you're at the top of the stairs, walk a bit further down the road and you'll see some cool Transformers statues and a cute little water spout that has a bird on it.

Super fun right in Georgetown . Went up and down. No tickets necessary -two blocks away from shopping district. Tends to do there and plenty to eat. A couple of blocks away from the university also.

Standing at the top, looking down the steep, narrow flight of approximately 75-97 steps that Father Karras plunged down, you instantly feel a chill. The steps themselves are ordinary concrete and stone, but their cinematic history injects them with a palpable, unsettling aura. ​Located at the corner of Prospect St NW and 36th St NW, the area feels like classic, historic Georgetown. The nearby "Exorcist House" adds to the experience, though a plaque at the bottom is the only official marker. It's cool to think of the filming history, including the rubber padding used for the famous movie. One of the lesser known, but uber-popular tourist sites in DC! This staircase near Key Bridge, on the western end of M Street in Georgetown is worth checking out. It's a quick walk from most of the spots in Georgetown. I've been here many times over the years and recently took coworkers to check it out. It's pitched rather steep, but still an easy walk to the top. Definitely spooky when visited at night! Check it out!

As part of the Georgetown Ghost Tour I went on, we visited this landmark. Iconic for The Exorcist movie. It's really cool that the movie was filmed in Georgetown and a must to see when here visiting. I, however, did not walk the stairs, but they do seem steep. I visited at the top of the stairs near The Exorcist home from the movie. It was nighttime and added to the spooky feel. Lots of people were seen making the trip up and down the stairs. It's probably a cool spot to run/ work out at if you were staying nearby. Add this to the list of many things to do while in Georgetown. Especially if you are a movie buff! ***Easy to find utilizing Google Maps*** It has its own tourist attraction marker.

A spooky night and steep hill climb, but worth it if you want to walk the same steps that priest fell down in the movie. Overall a very cool stop in DC & it takes you right to the exorcist house once you're up. Recommend watching it (maybe even on 2x speed lol IYKYK) before you go so you get the full effect of being on a film location.

If you can find these stairs, you're in for a real treat. They're at the end of the Key Bridge as you enter Georgetown but the parking area is extremely limited. Some people come to tone their butt, and others come to get silly. The old farts like me just gawk and get tired looking at them. haha You cannot visit without making at least one attempt to jog to the top without stopping :)

The original Exorcist movie came out in 1973. One of the most iconic movies in history. If you're a horror fan, the stairs will be a real treat. If you're not a fan, this is a great place to get your exercise in. Be careful, the stairs are steeped. It wasn't hard to locate since we saw other people going up/down the stairs and taking pictures. There is limited parking. When we were taking pictures, for some reason a horde of people started to come. It was nice while it lasted.

Autumn spooky vibes, warm evening breeze, dimly lit stairwell that reaches to heaven next to an abandoned gas station. Perfect setting to remember that classic movie that made this location so memorable, "The Exorcist." You almost feel like the devil is watching and waiting to kick your ass or make you a deal. It's got the background of nearby traffic, the sound of light breezes next to the river ( you could possibly find a body there if they drain it), and you can even hear the faint sounds of drunk college kids perfect for a B-movie horror flick, but no...this would not compare to the pure evil vibe that you want to feel from these stairs and since there is none, you may decide to climb them or take pictures hoping that you'll catch something spooky, but it remains a good, delicious memory from the 70's of how to stay away from Lucifer and be a good person to pray and ask for your God to give you protection as you wait to enter the gates of heaven someday.

I never knew these steps were in DC, if I had known I would've been here years ago. That movie scene where the priest leaps to his death is still in my mind after watching that movie decades ago.

Saw the movie as a kid and worked on the remake as an adult. Every time I come to DC I have to visit these stairs. It's just something I do now, like a tradition. The stairs are steep from the bottom, but worth the climb, and will literally have you saying FAWK ME! when you reach the top lol Fun experience climb half to the landing turn your back to the street and just be still. See if you feel anything. Me and a little girl did this and she said wtf before I could lol it felt like someone pushing us on the stomach and chest!! Lol its totally worth checking out if you are in the DC area. I do suggest bringing fun props to take pictures! for the ladies it's a great shop not to far that sells pandora charms and it's a Starbucks 3 minutes walk from there...

If you like movies and are passing through Georgetown (Washington DC), you need to visit this location of the final scene from the 1973 movie 'The Exorcist' almost 50 years ago. It is the moment when the priest (Father Karras) falls out of the window and rolls down the stairs to his death. The Exorcist stairs are located at 3500 Prospect St, NW. You can get there by continuing on 36th Street, descending from the corner of Prospect St and 36th St NW, down to a small parking area next to an abandoned gas station which my partner, his sister and I parked yesterday. It is a space where you can take some very creative photos and to show your friends that you are one of the most famous sets in the history of cinema.

This is a nice stop if you are into movie sets. These 75 stairs are the ones that the priest in the 1973 horror movie The Exorcist fell down. There were a few limited spots to park right by the stairs. Outside of that parking is difficult. There is a sign posted marking the stairs and it significance in the movie The Exorcist. The stairs are not for those with mobility issues and can be accessed from either the top or bottom. The site also serves as a popular spot for many locals to workout. There were 3 or 4 people running up and down the stairs and a guy doing pull up right next to the stairs on the bottom. That being said, this wold probably be a brief stop. I only spent about 10 or 15 minutes here and I was out.

Neat location, especially if you're a fan of the movie. I didn't get any creepy feelings, nor did any demonic entities attempt to push me down the stairs. lol Finding parking was the nightmare! I couldn't find the area near the top as reported by other Yelp reviewers. Most of the surrounding streets are 1-way, which means you have to drive multiple blocks just to turn around. The lot at the bottom of the stairs is private with several towing warning signs. It's off a busy, 1-way main road and is at an intersection. On my 2nd drive by, I noticed a closed business next door which I planned to park in. Just as I get to it, I see it's blocked off. Time for round 3! I finally decided to risk it and pulled into the private lot to take my chances. I only stayed long enough to climb to the top, FaceTime a friend who's a fan of the movie, and walk down to my car. No tow trucks were waiting for me. Overall I'd say it was worth it!

There is not much I can say here. They were stairs. Non polluted and pretty clean. We went up the stairs and then back down. People were taking pics and doing the same we did. Was fun to just go and experience

Just go at night, the ambience gets you. Also, these are no ez steps to go up, so be ready for a small burn. The way I got there was to park somewhere I initially had dinner, then took a rent a scooter down to the stairs.

Attraction in Georgetown How often do I visit Washington DC? not very much that's why I had to see the steps where they filmed the death of the character Father Damien Karras in the Exorcist. I enjoy visiting locations where scenes from movies were filmed and I like to add off beat tourist attractions in our itinerary. The Exorcist is a classic horror movie. This was great! We took Lyft here which was about 2 miles (8 mins) from the President Woodrow Wilson House. We got dropped off at Prospect Street... at first we couldn't find the stairway but we walked a few steps to our left to find the iconic Exorcist steps. Holy moly... we looked down the stairs and they are steep! It could be disorienting for someone descending here at night. A dusk or night visit to this site makes a much spookier view. Creepy! We proceeded to make our way down... slowly. The steps are in between two buildings and led down to M Street NW. At the foot of the stairs (on the wall to your left) there is a bronze plaque commemorated by the mayor of DC on October 2015. I know they're just regular steps but I still found it pretty cool and Linda Blair's possessed full-turning head still gives me the creeps. So how did they film the death of Father Damien Karras in the Exorcist? I looked it up... the steps were padded with 1/2"-thick rubber! Now you know! Check! Review #1199

Súper cool to visit and see in person. If you are afraid of heights then I don't suggest you climb all the way and try to look down. I did and was surprised at how frightening the bottom of the stairs appeared to me! Walking up the stairs was kind of freaky. I got flashbacks of the horrible movie and was seriously scared. Totally a picture spot when you are in the area.

Whether or not you've seen the 1973 movie, The Exorcist, please YouTube the famous "Take Me!" scene where Father Damien Karras saves the girl and he falls to his death down the stairs. Then, come check out this historic staircase in Georgetown where it was filmed! I've been living in the DMV area for a while now and finally made my way to check out this stairs. I have 0 regrets since I'm a movie fan and stuff like this defines DC local flavor. You can find the stairs by either going to the bottom of them on Canal Rd NW between 35th and 37th (like you're walking to Georgetown University) or going to the top of them on Prospect St NW and 36th St (they're down a ramp). Hopefully there aren't lots of random stair runners and slow walkers to get in the way of your perfect photo!

Gorgeous and creepy.....sounds like my personality. A must see location to check off your horror movie bucket list. Be careful walking these steps as it is extremely steep! The Exorcist house is right next door at the top of the steps. Come and enjoy this piece of movie history because Captain Howdy said so.

Since 1973, these 75 steps have been infamous worldwide. They were finally commemorated in 2015. The "Exorcist" film is still awesome, eventho much of the scenery around campus has changed. I arrived on campus in 1972 and witnessed the impact the film had on the community. Many late night dates ended near these steps. Recalling the horror scenes from the movie was always frightening and bonding at the same time. Scary and exciting. Timeless and never boring, even fifty years later.

In all of the times I've been to DC and Georgetown I've never been to these steps. I'm so glad we visited them, it made our fun trip even better. It was fun walking up and down the steps from the classic scene in the movie. And we were able to see the exterior of the house from the movie as well. It was a fun walk through this part of Georgetown to see these steps.

In essence, it's just a steep, narrow flight of stairs near Georgetown. Some might be underwhelmed, but if you love the movie, it's cool for a photo-op. And if you go after dark and happen to find someone else on the steps, you can slowly walk down behind them to set a creepy tone. Fans of the movie will love it, others might not care, but it's very close to the main Georgetown sights, so it's very convenient. What's most amazing to me is how they took this random flight of steps in the middle of the city and made it look so horrifying and mysterious in the movie. True movie magic.

These stairs might not look like much when you're at the bottom, but when you're at the top & looking down- they're steeper than you think! We ended up at these stairs after taking a ghost tour in Georgetown, so it wasn't too busy when we were here. As everyone else has mentioned, there is a plaque at the bottom of the steps mentioning the movie. Go check it out if you're in Georgetown!

My favorite thing I did in our nations capital. Disclaimer I'm a film nerd and I love love love that movie. Also I've been to the city before so this trip it was nice to find something exciting. There was a dude jogging the stairs that took pictures and I had to convince my 11 year old to play fr karras while I administered last rites. He had no clue what I was doing. Please don't miss it film fans!

Very cool. This was my stop visiting DC. Getting out of the parking lot is tricky. I'm pretty sure there is always traffic, just be careful. When I went I had the stairs all to myself.

Yeah, it's a review for some stairs. As far as stairs go, these actually look pretty cool. Of course being in one of the most famous horror movies makes them iconic. Aside from the fame, they do look cool. They provide a good workout just going up them. I've seen a lot of people using them for workouts. I haven't tried that. Not yet. Maybe one day. Go check out these stairs. Walk up and down a few times. Then go to Georgetown and shop around. There is only so much you can do with stairs. I gave them 5 stars because, well, they are pretty cool looking.

I didn't read too many other reviews but I imagine most involve some statement about how the Exorcist scared them as children. Well, I can join that club because watching that movie at 8 years old, did more than scare me, it traumatized me. I still have not watched it since and I barely can even look at Linda Blair in anything else without at least one sleepless night. Visiting these steps was more like a therapy session than a tourist visit. I'm now 46 and tired of being in bondage over this movie. I found them from the top and looked down. They are just as creepy in person as they were in the movie but also I was also really proud of myself for even being there! I started walking down and sweating but was doing it. I looked in "the window" and actually saw a copy machine and two desks. It wasn't an elevated bed with a 12 year old mutilated girl flopping around. Okay, I totally got this. I made it to the bottom and looked up. So creepy! But so cool! This was a major breakthrough for me and I called my mom to tell her about it. Haha! I think the steps are used pretty often as there aren't too many pathways to the top of that hill, but for any Exorcist fans, this is a must see. Next step, try to watch the movie again.

Somebody pushed me! Hey they're steps but from a classic movie scene so... no spoilers

I was born in 1951 and stationed at Quantico, VA. Drove to the movie theater in 1973 to watch to movie with my wife and my friend and his wife. We parked about two blocks from the movie theater at an Exxon gas station. After the movie we went to our car and noticed the steps, we couldn't believe it. We climbed up (it was night time). Saw the back of the house was not facing the steps they were to the left side and the window was boarded up. Cool!!

It's very cool to see that the steps used in the Exorcist movie are real and still exist to this day!

The exorcist steps as you might have ventured, are appropriately named due to the movie the Exorcist where the Priest sacrifices himself and has the demon possess him and then subsequently falls down the stairs. Anyhow, this is a tourist destination as well as the local college walking grounds since it is the fastest way from Prospect street onto M st. This is also famous for Georgetown University athletes, at least in the past, to do up and down repeats.

These steps are the bee's knees. They have a solid foundation and were great to walk down. Not once did I feel I was in danger. I went from my starting place to my destination (the bottom) in one piece, and that's what I look for in a good set of stairs. 5/5, would walk down again.

This place looks exactly how the movie looked! Very steep steps but very cool site to look at. I went in the afternoon right before sundown and there was a crowd of people on top of the stairs and at the very bottom so anyone can help take your picture if you ask nicely! Also at the bottom of the steps there is a plaque to know what you're looking at exactly and I'd suggest parking on top of the stairs it's a small street with curb side parking.

Okay, so maybe the "Power of Christ (didn't) compel you" to come to these stairs. Maybe the devil speaks for you. Well, I think I speak for the devil when I say that these stairs may make your head spin around in a 360 degree fashion and spew projectile green vomit from excor-citment. Warning: The devil incarnate does reside within the locals that frequent these stairs. Wanna piss off a local? Stay on the steps and attempt to recreate the famous spider walk while runners attempt to maneuver past you. They'll emit green hatred with red faces. Fun Facts: The house on Prospect St had a false front built to make the house appear closer to the stairs. No interior shots of the Prospect House were filmed. The interior shots were actually filmed in Burbank, Ca. and NYC. The height of the stairs are equivalent to a 5 story building. The stairs were padded in thick rubber to prevent the stunt men from entering into a similar fate as Father Damian Karras The story was based on a true story about a young boy in the D.C. area during the late 40's. The author of the book formerly resided in Georgetown Nine Deaths were associated with the filming of this flick. AMEN.

Sprinting these stairs in 4 inch stilettos when you're running late for dinner is well worth it. I promise you, dessert will taste much better. (Okay so maybe I downplayed things a bit...they were really 5 inch stilettos!)

They are stairs next to the gas station. Not much to rate about that. They are stairs. It's clean but still creepy I guess for what they're known for. Steep. Great work out stairs. 90 degree weather, you might want to avoid them. There's a bit hidden with no real indicator. At the top of the stairs there's a little sign that gives a little about Hollywood in Georgetown. The house is the one right next to the stairs. Take a pic, say a prayer, and get on moving cuz they're just stairs.

Just as I anticipated, the Exorcist Steps were a series of individual steps placed one after the other in a sloping fashion. The steps were solidly built; not once did I ever feel that the structure was going to collapse. I successfully traversed the steps, going not only up but also down. I had a great time, and the steps helped me get from point A to B without harm. I would certainly walk down (or up!) these steps again.

They are stairs. They were featured in a movie called the Exorcist hence why they have been dubbed the Exorcist Stairs. I completed the ultimate challenge on going up and down these things more than one time. It is hard as hell if you're not in great shape. It's even more difficult when it is snowing outside, and you thought it would be a brilliant idea to park at the top of the stairs on Prospect Avenue so you wouldn't get your car towed by parking at the gas station below. It's neat. They're interesting, and for what it is worth -- definitely get a photo op to simply say 'you've been there'.

At roughly 36th and Prospect in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C., one finds the "Exorcist Steps." They are right next to the stately home used for the some of the scenes in the epic horror film "The Exorcist." Had it not been for "The Exorcist," these would just be stairs taking people down closer to or back up from the Potomac River. And, even with their being an integral part of "The Exorcist," they are certainly not 5-star "as good as it gets." Let's get real, folks. However, they have been on my list of things to do on every trip that has taken me to Washington D.C., almost more so than visiting the beautiful campus of nearby Georgetown University, where other parts of the film were sited and filmed. Note that the Metro does not go to Georgetown. It will get to Dulles Airport before it will ever get to Georgetown. Also, I have heard that the "Exorcist house" above the steps has been significantly altered and does not resemble the one seen in the film and the movie poster, possibly to deter all the looky-loo tourists. (The same was done with the "Beverly Hillbillies" mansion in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles.) I can't believe there's a listing for the "Exorcist Steps" but, then, I'm not surprised, either. Any time I've been here, the instrumental piece "Tubular Bells" plays in my head. Well, at least that's better than hearing voices.

"The Power of Christ compels you!!!" The Exorcist is one of my favorite films and is still scary (to me anyway). William Friedken, you did well. So, OF COURSE one of the first things on my list of things to see in D.C. was the Exorcist house and stairway in Georgetown. (Clearly, I have my priorities straight). I felt like such a film dork, giggling as I snapped pictures of the house (which is next to the stairs) and steps. Yes, I walked down the stairs--very carefully, because yes, they're steep--and ran back up. (Definitely something to see if you're in the area.....or, if you're a weirdo like me. I only wish my friend hadn't been stuck in a work conference because I needed someone to take a photo of me lying at the bottom of the stairs, a la Father Karras. *Also, shout out to the house on Prospect Street that had a blown up picture of possessed Regan in their window. Nice touch. I appreciated that.

We totally walked up the stairs where the young priest feel down from the movie "The Exorcist"! It's funny to see people too scared to walk up the stairs! I'm glad I got a chance to see and climb! It was great!

So way back when I started dating WD, I walked from Rosslyn to campus via key bridge and these stairs. Never again. It was a serious reminder as to why I needed to A) quit smoking and B) get the hell back in shape. P.S. I get why there's no signage, though. Yes, it's one of the more famous landmark-ish things, but if my university had had a plaque for every courtyard used in a movie, the campus wouldn't have been nearly as pretty. Besides, that's what tour guides are for.

The place where Father Damien Karras went down head over heels at the end of The Exocist. For any horror movie fan this is an epic spot in cinema history. Probably a lot more intense visit on a foggy evening, but cool nonetheless even in the daylight. I'm sure the locals can't help, but roll their eyes at the tourists making a big deal out of something that they see everyday. I get it, I'm from Hawaii and sometimes I take the beaches for granted, go figure.

Why write a review for the "Exorcist Stairs"? Because they're there. I walk up and down these stairs 3-4 times a week. It's quite the hike and runners also zip up and down for a workout. If you've never seen the movie that makes these stairs famous, it's probably just as well. It's an awful movie and having thoughts of someone flying down these stairs like a skud missile is (usually) not a good visual to carry around.
