Oh dear. I was really looking forward to my stay, but after a long journey I arrived to see the place closed up and a list of telephone numbers on the door. I rang the first one, but there was no answer. I rang the second one and a man came from inside to let me in. There was no greeting or welcome, just "room 4?". I followed him upstairs to the room and when I went in, I saw it wasn't the one I had booked. (All the rooms are different and I had spent some time choosing online prior to booking). I then went back out and explained it wasn't the room I had booked. The man snapped at me and said the cleaner had an emergency and hadn't cleaned the room I had booked. I asked if there was any possibility they would be able to get it ready later. He said "What difference does it make?". After such a hostile welcome, I decided I didn't feel comfortable staying there. I asked if I could just have a refund. He snapped "not at this stage, no." Then he phoned the manager. |She arrived quickly and was very pleasant and apologetic. By way of compensation she put me in the deluxe room. The rooms that I saw were beautifully decorated and clean. There is a lovely lounge for guests to use as well. |I came back in the evening after going out and found the front door had been left open and no-one was around. This is a security concern. |In the morning I went down for my breakfast and the inhospitable man gave me a filthy look and walked off. I told the manager, again, that I wanted a refund so that I could either go elsewhere or just go home. The idea was to come away to a new place for some rest and relaxation after a very stressful few months. As a woman travelling alone, I have always been lucky in that I have encountered welcoming staff who would help if need be. Here, I felt uncomfortable and ill at ease. |They were reluctant to give me a refund but offered me use of the airbnb flat at no extra cost. Ideally I would have preferred to go elsewhere, but I accepted this offer. The man who appeared to be the new owner showed me to the flat and told me he was just upstairs if I needed anything. |I went out and about then came home to find water pouring through the ceiling and down the wall. I went upstairs and knocked on the door. I could hear someone talking and moving around, so I'm pretty sure they could hear me knock. No-one answered so I had to go outside and ring the emergency number. The lady said she would contact the owner. Sure enough he came downstairs and explained the shower was leaking. While he was there I asked if he knew how to get the heating working as it was cold. He looked at the thermostat and said "it's probably been off since March. See you tomorrow." Then he walked out, leaving me without any heat! I had to phone my partner, 280 miles away to talk me through how to get it working!!|The next morning at breakfast the young man who took my order was friendly and pleasant. However, the unpleasant man walked in, stopped by my table and said, "I'm just showing someone round. Is that OK with you?". Quite why he needed to make this passive aggressive comment, I don't know. He could have just walked past and said nothing. But no, he decided to pick on a woman by herself. |The breakfast is pretty basic. 1 croissant, 1 slice of toast and then cheese, salami, cereal and mini pain au chocolat. That said, the quality is good and the coffee was good, too. |Unfortunately I did not have the chilled out time I was hoping for. Overall it was a disappointment. |On the plus side, the rooms are beautifully decorated and clean. The breakfast was good quality and the female manager and young male waiter had great hospitality skills. |In terms of areas for improvement: ensure that all staff have, if not customer service skills, then at the very least, basic manners. It helps to be hospitable in hospitality! Find out how things work in the airbnb so that guests aren't left in the cold. If things go wrong, like the cleaner leaving suddenly, politely explain the situation instead of sticking someone in a different room and then getting aggressive when they ask why it doesn't look like the one on the website. |I twice said that I wanted to leave but they wouldn't give me a refund. I ended up staying in a place where I felt as though I was a nuisance rather than a guest. |I like to support independent businesses over big chains, but sometimes it doesn't work out.
