3 Best Day Trips from Melbourne to Mornington Peninsula, Daylesford, and the Yarra Valley | Condé Nast Traveler

"The two-story Meletos Farmhouse would look equally at home in the Tuscan countryside as it does surrounded by the greenery of the Yarra Valley, Victoria’s best-known wine-growing region, an hour’s drive outside Melbourne. The rendered historic building is set in a walled garden, with vineyards on one side and an orchard on the other. Entering the double-height lobby is a little like being welcomed into a friend’s spacious homestead. A wine-tasting trip to the Yarra Valley is a rite of passage for anyone living in Melbourne, and there are plenty of good vineyards surrounding Meletos. Be sure to make a booking at adjacent fine-dining restaurant The Stables at Stones." - Carrie Hutchinson

The room was lovely, I opened the windows and enjoyed the fresh air, bed was comfy. My only issue was there was no English breakfast tea, (Earl grey is good but not for me) I would have loved a choice. Breakfast was lovely. Staff were excellent and the ‘buildings’ were just lovely. We loved the wedding, the reception and everything that went with it. Thank you

The room and restaurant were amazing. The staff were friendly and courteous. It was an excellent stay. Would love to stay there again. My only gripe, although small, was there isn't much to do in the area.

Visited with my partner for a night away in the Yarra Valley. The grounds and location are truly beautiful and make for a very relaxing and peaceful stay. The room was small but clean, although I found the mattress quite uncomfortable. Large bathroom with excellent shower. While we enjoyed ourselves there is little in the way of amenities that really make this worth the price.

This place is amazing and a beautiful gem of the Yarra Valley. The pictures don’t do it justice. It’s so peaceful and allows you to recharge and experience the beautiful views and everything Yarra Valley has to offer.

We had the most beautiful trip away for our anniversary, everything was perfect. The overall design and atmosphere was like being transported to a quaint Italian village. Our meal at the restaurant was wonderful and we left our spa treatments feeling relaxed and refreshed. Will definitely be coming back.

We booked Meletos to celebrate an Anniversary and Birthday. We thought it was good value for the Sunday night special that included dinner and breakfast. The property and our room was beautiful and the receptionist was delightful and helpful. I read some of the previous reviews about a male receptionist but our lovely young woman from NZ was all smiles and professional. Our dinner was good but far too big a serve and so we enjoyed the Continental breakfast the next morning which was absolutely fine, especially the tea! We stopped in Coldstream on the way home to buy some of the Yarra Valley Tea ourselves. We really enjoyed our stay and will stay again

We booked this place to celebrate a friend’s 70th. Birthday, everyone we met was friendly and helpful, the rooms are beautiful and surrounded with stunning views. The dinner was delicious, we ordered a chocolate cake for the Bday girl, it was fresh, moist and good quality chocolate. We enjoyed the continental breakfast, it was a huge spread with freshly baked breads, homemade jam, smoked salmon and much much more…. Absolutely amazing experience! We’ll certainly come back again.

Yelp
We had a ten-star experience at Meletos last night. From our delightful server, Millie, to the delicious food to the amazing atmosphere, we felt like we didn't want the night to end. Best experience of our 7 days in Australia (that started in Melbourne) so far.

Yelp
Exceptional. This was a family lunch for 10 booked a month before - Meletos had been recommended and it was a perfect suggestion. We arrived on time to a set 3 course meal - the group had dietary concerns and all were catered for - vegan had a special main to replace the land, fish entree replaced with an exquisite artichoke soup for seafood allergy, gluten free dish provided. The entree, main and dessert were just excellent - wine offering was a beautifully pairing. The staff were efficient, friendly and made the meal very enjoyable - the table next to us spilled a drink and the staff were on to it fast and speedy clean up. Dessert and cheese board were local produce and topped off a great meal. Coffee was lovely It was a perfect Sunday family lunch.

Yelp
What a perfect meal! This is the second time I've been to Meletos so I knew I was in for a treat. My partner and I found ourself a little early for lunch but thought it would be the perfect time to get a table without needing to wait. It can get very busy and by 12pm you will be on a long waiting list! We sat down for lunch at about 11:45 and ordered drinks immediately. The staff were extremely friendly, attentive and helpful. They pointed out a few of the favourites and talked us through the specials. We ordered the Hervey Bay scallops, aranchini and Sicilian salami pizza. The scallops were fantastic - melt in your mouth! The aranchini was crunchy and delicious and had a beautiful salsa verde to offset the richness. The pizza was HOT! The taste was incredible but be warned, the chilli was everywhere! We ate every last bite and washed it down with our cider. We opted for a couple desserts also. The pav and the chocolate caramel tart. The pav was the standout though! Perfect zesty lemon and lime with a sherbet surprise. Make sure you finish off with dessert, it's totally worth it. Thanks for another memorable day in the Yarra valley!

Yelp
This was a horrible experience. The waiting time is extremely long. The waiting staff were not helpful. The food! My goodness! The lamb shoulder was 10 hours old. It was virtually turning into crude oil. Horrible experience.

Yelp
Unfortinately I was very underwhelmed with Meletos. The setting was lovely and i know we are outside Melbourne so its hard to get good staff, but you can still serve the whole table (4 guests) at the same time! Not 20 mins apart. You can still get everyone's drinks orders at the same time! The food for the others, bar mine, was very unexicting as well. A real shame

Yelp
This restaurant is located on a beautiful farm and the views are wonderful. The decor of the restaurant itself is airily and light and almost perfect. Unfortunately the food was pretty average. Also the service wasn't amazing. My son who is 5 loves grilled fish fillets and won't eat battered fish. There was a $36 barramundi fillet on the menu which I asked to be served just as a plain fillet, no butter etc. I had a very long conversation with the waitress about this because she was very sure that the chef would not serve the fish without the butter. Luckily the chef must have been in a good mood and was willing to not pour the butter over the fish. I had the mussel soup which had 3 mussels in it. Other people in my party had pizzas and my husband had the orecchiette which he said were delicious. For dessert we had the salted caramel and chocolate tart which was not amazing. Would I be back? Maybe, the location and scenery is probably enough to get me back there.

Yelp
I have been to Meletos three times now and whilst I love the building and location, there are a few criticisms. First, the music is too loud....combined with the noise created by an acoustically challenged space it is impossible to have any conversation. It is such a relief to go outside for a coffee! Second, the ceiling windows make parts of the restaurant unbearable when the sun is shining....we were placed at the back on a recent visit and I could not bear the sensation of being slowly fried. The food is what you would expect at an innercity pizzeria with the bonus of amazing views and plenty of room to stretch out, so it is an enjoyable place for lunch or socialising with a crowd.

Yelp
Meletos is our special treat place. When we want delicious food and a special dining experience we come here. We were married at Stones of the Yarra Valley so there is lovely nostalgia attached to this venue and the views are stunning. The pricing is reasonable but a good meal for two will easily cost $100 plus beverages (depending on how big your appetite it!) There are also great pizzas here which are moderately priced. Would recommend for a lovely day out.

Yelp
We had a quick snack here: oysters, fries and a sampling of cider from Napoleone Cider Brewery next door. Can't vouch for the rest of the food but the fries were really good! Oysters were a bit expensive but on par cost wise with other restaurants. The atmosphere was perfect. Beautiful, rustic restaurant in the middle of wine country.

Yelp
Great location, just off the main road. The decor is fantastic. A bit loud with a party feeling (clashing with the hipster attitude of the staff ). The Britt pop was blasting through the speakers. Definitely catering tourists like me. Cider is the name of the game here. Dishes are expensive a tad elaborate and on the pretentious side of things. But the massive oven should direct you to ask the pizzas.... Had a pork fennel and capers one. ok but far from exciting. Will I return? Sure, why not, but not rushing back

Yelp
Fantastic venue, even better food and the staff are some of the best I've seen in terms of hospitality. If your looking for a good venue to chill have a few beers and have a decent feed meletos is the place for you :)

Yelp
Unfortunately, Meletos isn't offering the best quality of service to its guests. We were told recently that all brides and bridesmaid are not allowed to bring any make up artists into the hotel for pre-wedding preparations. Despite the beautiful photos of your rooms, hearing this rule set by the manager/owner is just absurd. This has given plenty of past brides and bridesmaids difficulties in preparing for their weddings. To have a high standard of quality of service is not to keep away unforeseen noise or chaos of weddings but to ensure all guests were treated with respect and given with extra attention to details and comfort. It is a huge disappointment to discover this set of rules imposed by them. It is also the first time I've ever heard of such rule imposed by a hotel.

Yelp
I tried to make a booking for 5 people online 6 weeks ahead of Easter Saturday. The website said to call in order to book for 5 people, so that's what I did. When I called them, the girl advised me that they don't actually take bookings for weekends and to simply come in on the day and put our names down for a table and enjoy a drink while we wait. I was unconvinced by this and said to her that I was worried that we'd be waiting for hours or not get a table at all and might be better off to book elsewhere. She was very reassuring that if we wanted to avoid a longer wait, to arrive at 2pm as they start to quieten down by that point and that we would certainly get a seat for lunch. That's exactly what we did today, we arrived just after 1:30 only to be told that they're "fully booked". When I asked her how long until we could get a table, she said that we would not be able to get one at all. I came down from Sydney to enjoy Easter lunch with my mum who has just recovered from cancer and had I known that this would happen, I would have simply booked elsewhere 6 weeks ago. I'm sure the food is great and what little I saw of the venue looked amazing, but this was a crap experience and I refuse to ever go back somewhere that places such little regard on giving correct info to its clientele.

Yelp
Grounds are beautiful, food was good, venue is airy & loud. Service was AWFUL / had to ask wait staff 5 times to bring me water.

Yelp
Hmmmm, its a nice venue. Pizza is ok. Just lacks something.....try it. I guess they need a little professionalism. All I all we had nice meal.

Yelp
Amazing food & service! If you have Kids then get a table outside (if its a nice day of course) The kids had the opportunity to run around while taking in the spectacular view!
