5 Best Day Trips from Chicago | Condé Nast Traveler

"Locals frequent for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as shop the small grocery inside the cafe. But rowdy, this cafe is not. The café offers a number of housemade lemonades, smoothies, hot and iced teas, coffees and frappes, and soft drinks. With its down-home appeal, pies, pecan rolls, biscuits, donuts, and scones all have the feel of grandma’s hands. Stop in for breakfast or lunch—which includes everything from panini to lasagna and meatloaf—or homemade ice cream after a day at the lake." - Jessi Roti, Joseph Hernandez

Hands down the BEST breakfast. You can tell it was cooked with care and passion. Biscuits and gravy I don't normally flock to, but goodness was this perfect in every way. The bubble tea was great! Nothing better than supporting your local goods store with local made items! UPDATED: 3/11/25 The new place is gorgeous! Quaint seating area, and plenty of room for their displays! Even a new feature- drive thru window! Remember to have patience with the staff. They are absolutely lovely, and every meal is cooked and made with love and care. Not some fast food place. Its a place you can sit down and really enjoy your breakfast/food. New pictures added! Menu is always subject to change!

Farmhouse has Delicious Treats for everyone! Blackberry Turnovers are a must! Their treats are just as sweet as the owner! ♥️😉

Fantastic stop!! The wife and I checked this place out on our road trip and we are glad we did. The donuts are super good. Great texture and not overly sweet. We also got deli meat, cheese, and a loaf of bread to make sandwiches. Man that bread was good. I recommend this place 100%

Google
I don't enjoy reviewing a place like this. It was probably a really nice place at one time. But it's old, the carpeting was disgusting. The booths are all tore up. The place was dirty. We ordered Panini sandwiches, mine was Cajun Turkey, and my wife ordered Mozzarella and tomato, Panini. The mozzarella and tomato was basically not much. My Cajun Turkey sandwich didn't have much Cajun. The French fries are literally laying in a puddle of grease in the basket. We did buy a cinnamon roll and some chocolate covered peanuts. The Cinnamon roll was really outstanding. We really enjoyed it. The place needs a complete reboot, remodel. If my review has been helpful, please give me a thumbs up.

Hidden gem! Mennonite owned; locally sourced and quite literally everything is made from scratch. Local produce and products. Best pastries and meat loaf imaginable. Hardy Biscuits and grave. You can't go wrong! Extensive drink selection. From baked fresh to canned and of course candies. Shop remarkable lunchmeat and groceries selection while they prepare a plate lunch. If you haven't been they will not disappoint

Google
Excellent food, friendly service, very decent prices. Had 2 excellent paninis, crispy fries. Bought cookies to go. Lots of jams, jellies, pie fillings with natural ingredients (no corn syrup or added flavorings). Kind of set back from the street, so wouldn't have found it without Google.

Food was very good. Taste and presentation wonderful. Service was excellent. Had the 5 Grilled Cheese Sandwich with ham plus Coleslaw. Also, the Yankee Pot Roast. Dessert Pecan Pie and Chocolate Cream Pie. Delicious. I'll be visiting them again when I go to LaConner.

I have been coming to this establishment for years. Usually I love it. I went today and it's an entirely different place almost. The staff was not inviting and seemed inconvenienced that we had come for lunch during lunch. There were only 2 tables seated during this time so it wasn't a rush or anything. We sat in the back in this beat up booth that overlooks the overflowing grease bin, barbwire fenced in AC and random car doors. Truly a wild sight to see. The booth itself is a caution to sit in. Best to sit on the support beam or you will fall into the seat a few inches. I ordered a creamy mushroom soup. It came with these weird balls of flour in it. Im not sure if these were supposed to be dumplings or what, but I felt like someone added flour to thicken it and left it in clumps. It was very bland and a little sweet which was strange. My friend received a tomato and mozzarella panini, the thing was dripping wet The entire place just felt dirty. We couldn't get water to dispense that wasn't pink because it's shared with a Gatorade at the fountain. After a few unsavory bites, we just left. Upon leaving I noticed their letterboard said: OPEN BURGERS ARE BACK I SEE YOU FOR A GOOD YEAR CAL 1 0 This should've been the first sign that this place had changed because what in the heck does that sign even mean. I see you?? For a good year?? 0/10. This is NOT the farmhouse standards I recall in the years past. I am only posting this review because after a little bit, I had the runs and felt awful. I can't say it's food poisoning but something ain't right about it.

Yelp
Cute homey atmosphere. Adorable staff. Great coffee and tea. Tons of tea varieties and coffee flavors. Lots of preserves and fresh tomatoes for sale!

Yelp
If you have social anxiety or generally like calm, relaxing cafe spots this place is not for you. When I went the first time the employees were unhelpful but I brushed it off as them having a lot of work to do and being rushed. Boba was inauthentic and literally curdled as I drank it so I had to throw away 6 dollars. The second time I went, my baby brother and I were glared at by an employee as soon as we walked in, no greeting or help, immediately felt like we weren't welcome and I could sense my little brother's discomfort as he needed to use the restroom and the lady at the front scowled at him for asking. We were going to get a treat and the hostility ruined our day out. Not to mention, their duck taped toilet didn't even work. Bathroom was disgusting as if neglected for years. Wouldn't be surprised if they had a cockroach infestation or food safety violations from how neglected the bathroom was. We decided to get something from the discount table, but I guess because of the looks that one employee was giving us, we had to pay full price for something old and stale. Even cardboard would have more flavor than whatever they overcharged us for. Overall very rude to young children for whatever reason. If the employees are having a bad day they will take it out on you and overcharge you. Do not recommend

Yelp
I'm so happy that I found this place to enjoy during a recent trip to the area. I would travel 30 min extra to enjoy the delicious food here.

Yelp
They have the best homemade biscuits and gravy around! Their cinnamon roll was excellent as well.

Yelp
The staff is very nice and the food is amazing. Got the biscuits and gravy and the biscuits are homemade. 10/10. Also the bread on the breakfast sandwich is really good. Overall very good food and nice people. Hours from home but will definitely come again if we're down here.

Yelp
We were craving breakfast that wasn't one of the chain restaurants and found this excellent local establishment. The breakfast was hearty and fresh. The breakfast sandwich was $6 and the size of a football! This place is also a bakery, and they have the most beautiful pies I've ever seen. We bought a whole strawberry rhubarb pie for $14. They also bake bread, make fresh donuts, and sell local fresh fruits. There's also a corner with canned goods, chocolates, and candies. It wasn't super busy while we were there, but business was steady as lots of people were coming in to pick up bakery orders. They seem to have a good handle on workflow, because you order at the counter and get a number before being seated. The staff we very friendly and we are certainly returning the next time we drive through.

Yelp
We were just driving through on our way to Tennessee and oh man are we glad we did! The blueberry muffin was a great size and so good! The cinnamon roll was big and super delicious. Both the muffin and roll were only $5!

Yelp
I love their chicken salad sandwich on their homemade bread! Their food is all homemade and delicious. They also offer lots of homemade baked goods as well as specialty coffee, Lots of different jams and jellies for sale as well as noodles, breads, lots of great stuff.

Yelp
The name represents well whats inside. Lots of bakery items on display. Good variety in pies, cakes, ect. Several empty tables, none clean. This is a stand up, wait at counter to order, then they bring it to your table. They ask how much tip right away when you pay. I'm accustomed to tipping based on service rather than before. Hubs had pot pie. Said it was really good. I had the turkey panini. It was warm not hot, cheese was still hard. The bread was not toasted well so it was very gummy. Fried green tomatoes were excellent and very hot. I will come back and try something different next time.

Yelp
Found this gem when the Waffle had people waiting outside. We didn't want to wait and decided to look for something else. The omelet was the perfect size and tasted great. The toast was delicious as was the light and fluffy pancake. We bought some bakery items and canned goods on our way out. We'll definitely be back!

Alison S.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! The lasagna had really good flavor, staff is very nice and accommodating! Yum! The strawberry lemonade was really good too.

Yelp
They have a very good breakfast menu. The donuts, biscuits and gravy, and smothered breakfast burrito are out of this world. We've only ate lunch here once and it was outstanding. P. S. The people that run this place are MENNONITES! there is a big difference between Mennonites and Amish.
google avatar

Megan I.

Yelp
Most amazing turnovers you'll ever eat. Everything is homemade and absolutely incredible
google avatar

Rusty S.

Yelp
Good little place. No frills w/ regard to decor, they won't win any (at least non-Mennonite) awards for food presentation, but who cares. A lot of time when you're on the road you miss regular homestyle cooking, which is one of the reasons I went in. I had the omelet, which was a simple foldover variety, with your choice of filling. Bacon on the side was crispy and delicious. Coffee was good too. One of the best parts was the toast, which is a round, "English muffin-style" variety, cut into thick discs. It was really good, not to mention it comes with a health (or non-heathy, perhaps) amount of real butter, which is almost nonexistent anymore--usually most places automatically apply some kind of "butter-like spread," which I never liked. Anyway, this is a good place--the baked goods probably especially, but I did not try any others besides the toast.

Yelp
I grew up in mount Vernon and, we never had a bakery or restaurant like this. I was visiting my family and my mom suggested we try it out. I love Amish food and stores! We got lunch which was delicious! Great sweet potato fries, juicy burger and fresh lemonade. I also took home about $20 of homemade baked goods including a glazed donut. This thing was flaky, soft, sweet, and melted in my mouth. So stinking good!!! I'll be back !

Yelp
Well .. Went in today with my daughter (special needs ) .. waited by the front counter where the bakery items were displayed .There were at least 5 workers walking astound talking to customers and almost all saw us .. After about 10 minutes of not even being acknowledged .. told my daughter "Let's Go if they can't even acknowledge our presence on a voice loud enough for all to hear ... And the pastries looked kinda old and not fresh ... Never go back !

Yelp
JD and his assistant were super friendly. My Red Velvet cookie was a bit dry, but my cinnamon rolls were HUGE and delicious! My root beer float was also delicious!

Yelp
Finally gave this place a third chance after two bad experiences when they first opened. Much better. Food was good. Wheat bread was homemade on my egg and cheese sandwich. Would go back again now.

Yelp
The chicken salad sandwich I had was delicious. Fresh flaky bread. Tried the lasagna, did not disappoint. Everything is fresh and homemade you can tell.

Yelp
Yelp reviews sent me here... it is a ways off the main road thru town but so worth it! I had a Chicken Salad Sandwich which was delicious and I must mention the bread was amazing. I want to try another sandwich next time we pass this way just to have that bread again. Got a few cookies as well. No frills place but good food... just what we look for while on a drive. I got my order to-go. Noticed a drive up window.

Yelp
JD was such a pleasure to work with - Always pleasant and open to working with our special requests, JD made sure we got plenty of delicious treats for our event. I especially appreciated his flexibility with multiple last-minute add-ons/changes. The custom cookie favors iced with our logo were a hit, and the donuts were amazing! (Pike Systems)

Yelp
I give it five stars for the donuts! The other food was good but baked goods are great. A few more smiles from the staff would be nice but the donuts will certainly make you smile.

Yelp
A friend of mine lost her daughter this week. We wanted to take some food to her house, but she is on the KETO diet and I had no clue what to take. I called JD at Farmhouse and asked if they had anything on their menu that I could order. He told me he would be happy to make a casserole and dessert that was from the KETO diet and would have it done by 3pm that afternoon. I don't think he has any idea how grateful I am that he made this special order meal for my friend. When we delivered it, we found she had not really eaten in a couple of days. I highly recommend Farmhouse to everyone! They really care about the people in this community!! Thank you!!!

Yelp
Lunch is great! Bake goods to die for. Very nice people great food and you can buy home made baked goods

Yelp
The baked goods here are the absolute BEST! The cinnamon rolls and donuts are the size of your head. Probably bigger actually. Their hot breakfast hits the spot too. Biscuits and gravy, eggs, baked oatmeal. The have a fresh deli counter, cheeses, espresso drinks, all kinds of other baked goods. French silk pie, muffins, cookies, you name it.

Yelp
Traveling through and saw this sweet gem of a bakery. Modest offerings but all of the basics. Jams, honey, cheese and breads. Their turnovers are delicious! Not too sweet and oh so flaky. My iced latte was equally tasty. Kind ladies greeting with a smile.

Pauline A.

Yelp
Wonderful food. My husband had the meatloaf and I had chicken panini. Then we topped it off with a cinnamon roll. Great find on our way down the highway.
