The Fearrington House Inn

"Located eight miles from Chapel Hill, this "charming inn" was constructed in 1987 on an old dairy farm and takes its cues from the English and French countryside. Winding redbrick pathways lead guests through "beautiful gardens" with native plants. Garnering a high score, accommodations are "the finest rooms anywhere," done in English country style with fireplaces, floral bedspreads, and nineteenth-century furniture. Turndown service includes truffles handmade by the hotel’s chocolatier. The restaurant’s contemporary American cuisine is "out-of-this-world good." The 4,000-square-foot day spa offers facials, massages, and wraps."

I’ve been coming here for decades and the entire experience is next level excellence , like a Ritz Carlton experience with a farmhouse inn vibe. The team is fabulous from the front desk, housekeeping, servers, the food, the grounds and shops around the Inn itself. My experience at the spa has been mixed over the years. The bedding is fabulous. They’ve switched up the decor over the years and the taupe/ tan vibe on the window treatments and upholstered furniture isn’t my thing in the rooms so I hope Teresa will reconsider adding serene colors like greens, blues, whites and other mixed patterns to the overall design aesthetic, even consider going back to the different colors and ambiance each individual room use to have. Standouts are the staff above all else, they are always helpful and friendly! Fabulous location for a wedding/ celebration venue as well.

We had such a wonderful stay at the Inn to celebrate my birthday! We booked a Deluxe Room and were upgraded to a Superior Suite through the AmEx Fine Hotels Program, which also got us early check-in and late check-out. The bed was incredibly comfortable, A/C was actually cool, and overall experience over the top. We also were able to enjoy e-bikes (it's a great neighborhood for walking and biking) and visiting the pool. Note that the pool is not on-site and is about a 3/4 mile drive. There is not pool-side service, but we took a cooler and picnic from The Belted Goat with us. ||The staff went out of their way to make my Birthday special.||Breakfast was delicious (something for everyone) and dinner at the Fearrington House Restaraunt is not to miss!

My husband too me here for an anniversary weekend and it was absolutely wonderful!! They provided us with a free upgrade which was just too too kind!!! The rooms are beautiful and amazing. I hope to come back and celebrate here again. Oh!! And the complimentary breakfast is superb!!! It’s absolutely delicious and it is table service!!! So now powder eggs or overcooked meats. Just delicious made to order foods.

We had thought about this restaurant since moving to the area a few years ago. It did not disappoint. Each bite was well planned, beautifully presented and explained and well plated. But what made this fine dining experience so extraordinary was the service! This wasn’t a stuffy place; the staff made us so comfortable and we felt so well cared for. Shout out to Todd, our amazing server!

I spent one night at The Fearrington House Inn and had a truly wonderful experience. From the moment I arrived, everything felt warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully curated. The room was beautifully appointed and incredibly comfortable, with every detail designed to make the stay feel special. The staff were gracious and attentive without being overbearing. It was a peaceful, relaxing getaway—just what I needed. I wish I could have stayed longer, and I’m already looking forward to a return visit. Highly recommend!

We discovered the full English Tea by accident while visiting family in Wake Forest. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We were seated in a beautifully decorated room with a view of the yard. The food was delicious. A nice assortment of tea sandwiches, scones and cakes. We only needed to make our tea selection. We spent time touring the surrounding shops and the magnificent McIntyre Book Store. We plan to stay at the Inn next time.

Sorry, but I had to take away a star for a couple of reasons, but will start with the fabulous first. Service above and beyond for the inn, front desk, restaurant, spa and boutiques. Gorgeous grounds with groundskeepers constantly maintaining. A special shout-out to Meghan for an outstanding massage. Afternoon tea was a truly delightful experience in the beautiful formal dining room. The shops have amazingly distinctive items. We were upgraded to a spacious king suite, much appreciated. Super comfortable bed and luxury linens with no shortage of a variety of pillows to suit any preference, a winner for us. Stunning bathroom with outstanding shower, towels and heated towel rack separated the sitting area from the bedroom making us feel like we were in an apartment! However, I have to agree with other reviews that while the carpet looked brand new and the suite was impeccably clean, the furniture and drapery in drab tans and browns are truly outdated, failing to give that huge suite the tremendously high end elegance it deserves. Note, there really are limited days and times for any kind of dining. We did not learn we could have a delicious informal dinner in the lovely bar area of the restaurant until our last evening as the website gives the impression the only dinner choice is a 4-course pre-fixe only. Do make a reservation. It won't disappoint! Breakfast was, WOW! Loved the "appetizer" smoothies and choice of white sugar or brown. My husband ordered the Fearrington breakfast everyday which is incredibly huge, eggs cooked perfectly. The disappointment came with the lemon/blueberry pancakes I was salivating to have. The first stack wasn't thoroughly cooked so I sent them back only to have the second come served the same way. Someone mentioned gummy, but the reality is they appeared to be cooked on one side only and just barely at that. Sorry to say that after two tries I moved to the oatmeal as the pancakes were a real miss. All, in all, this is a lovely, well-cared for and hospitable property. More importantly, the staff is first class with a genuine interest in making guests feel welcome.

We were happy to find a dog friendly Relais & Chateux inn that sounded like it had a similar set up to one of our other favorite R&C inns - the Inn at Little Washington. The idea of a highly rated Inn with an entire village to explore is enticing, but unfortunately, this place was mostly a let down. The pros: The grounds, full of native flowers, beautiful fountains, and landscaped and walkable gardens, are gorgeous. I loved walking by the farm in the mornings. The bookstore is absolutely worth a visit. The food market has diverse packaged snacks and drinks to browse and purchase. The Roost had great pizzas (although, they ran out of dough shortly after us) but their hours are strange, like the rest of the property. We stayed in a grand suite which was clean and large, with a lot of natural light with nice linens including very comfy robes, and was fairly updated. The oversized tub was excellent. Staff in the restaurant were very kind and attentive. Cons: The stay is simply not a five star hotel stay. Although someone told me they were marking that it was our anniversary on our reservation, we heard nothing about that all weekend. We were asked if we wanted turn down service our first night and we declined. Noone inquired about or came to do turn down the second night. The room had no dog bowls, towels, or treats as we've seen in other 5 star inns. There is no in-room coffee, no mini fridge option, no room service, and some outdated odd details in the room like the 1990-style large scale in the closet. The room has a placard that says they practice sustainability and therefore provide refillable waters. They don't. You are "gifted" two plastic bottles and a single random non-local bag of potato chips when you check in, and continued use of single plastic throughout the property is expected on your stay. No options for recycling, either. Fine, but not consistent with the sustainable aspect they advertise. The website says all grand suites (the most expensive room option) have fireplaces. Ours did not. Fine for us in the summer, but again, not accurate. We were told the garden room had tea and coffee each morning starting at 7am. It did not have tea. The coffee was bland and no options except 1/2 and 1/2. The breakfast croissant was very good, otherwise the food was mediocre. As many have remarked, the pancakes have a very strange texture. It was nice for them to pack up the breakfast to go when we both could not stay for the meal, though.Tea service was okay, but not worth the add on (sometimes included in other 5 star locations). The hours are weird here and all food locations are affiliated or share a kitchen except the Roost pizza spot. I recommend giving guests a print out of what is open and available when upon check in. Through trial and error, we learned that the pizza place is only open Thursday and Friday. We knew the food market closed at 5pm, but learned showing up at 4pm that any made-to-order food service ends at 3pm. All of the prepared salads feature bland boiled pulled chicken. Although it also has espresso coffee drinks, it doesn't open until 9am. Overall: the grounds are absolutely worth a visit and a few hours of your time if you're in town - grab a pizza if you come during those limited hours. I can see how this place is popular for weddings (there was one during our stay) as the property is spectacular and the food staff are great. But, beyond that, a hotel stay here is unremarkable for a Relais and Chateux location. To add needed value to the stay, the sun room or garden room would be a great place to offer a wine and cheese hour for guests as an amenity, more attentive room service and some add ins in the room would be welcomed.

Yelp
My wedding reception was there in 1996! It was classy and timeless . I would do a renewal there anytime! Unfortunately the store is no longer a venue any more.

Yelp
We had an incredible stay at The Fearrington House Inn. The quaint suite situated just off the courtyard was nicely appointed and had everything you could want. From the moment you step into the lobby you are made to feel welcomed by the gracious staff. Everything is first class. The perfect getaway for a special stay, anniversary or birthday celebration. The Fearrington House Inn is the pinnacle of refinement in a beautiful setting. Five well earned stars.

Yelp
Plush, plush, plush. (Also pricey, pricey, pricey, but you get what you pay for.) I sprang for a deluxe room and everything in it was absolutely top quality, plus it was huge. I had two walls of windows with what must have been thousands of dollars worth of blinds and drapes. The bathroom was enormous and quite modern, while the bedroom/sitting area were in a more traditional style. Very cool, very classy, very comfortable. There's a courtyard, fountain garden, sun room, and living room that are for overnight guests only. The whole place oozes serenity and peace. Breakfast in the restaurant is included and it's a sit-down affair where you order from a menu. Pretty standard choice of fare, but well-executed in a nice space. Check-out day was my birthday and when I told them that making my reservation, it resulted in a lovely cheese and charcuterie plate waiting for me in my room, along with a nice note and a gift card for the shops in the Village. Just an indication of how personalized the service is.

Yelp
I stayed here one night for our anniversary, and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Since we came during the week, they graciously gave us an upgrade and also added a few things because of our anniversary. The staff did an excellent job of making us feel welcome during our stay. We made use of the bikes that were available to bike around Fearrington Village and the neighborhoods. Be warned - some of the streets can get hilly, but it was a great workout, and enjoyable since it wasn't too hot that morning. There is also a wellness center - with basic gym equipment, an indoor walking track, and a small lap pool - about half a mile from the Inn which is available for guests. On Tuesday afternoon, there was a farmer's market, where a lot of local farms and businesses set up shop to sell produce. The Village also has a handful of other boutique shops which are easily walkable from the Inn, including a nice bookstore that I could have spent hours in. As for our actual room, we stayed in a Superior Suite, which included a separate lounge space. The room was very spacious, included a king sized bed, the bathroom had two separate sinks and a towel warmer (I've never seen one of those before, but it was very useful after a shower!). Everything was clean and comfortable. Our service was accommodating, friendly, and helpful, from check-in to check-out and beyond. My wife needed to store some things in a refrigerator, and there was someone at the help desk 24 hours in case we needed anything. The stay included breakfast at the Inn, which was fairly standard in terms of dish offerings, but still tasty. I ordered a dish with eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, and my wife tried the Eggs Benedict. Neither were out-of-this-world, but it was an enjoyable breakfast. I liked the coffee. The service for breakfast was not bad. We were the only table there, so the service was exclusive, but it took some time for our waitress to notice a few small things such as asking if we needed refills on our drinks. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Fearrington and would love to come back, perhaps to also try dinner at the Restaurant.

Yelp
TIP: Get on their email newsletter list! I literally waited years for the right (for us) "affordable" opportunity to try an overnight stay here. As a bidding-type-gal, this was out of the norm for me to splurge like this, but when you factor in all the extras that can come with an overnight stay (depending on the offer), it was a justifiable, and oh-so-wonderful experience! Email offer had a 20% off June special that was even good on a Saturday night! From the minute I booked it, the email contact with staff was efficient, welcoming and helpful. When we later decided to add dinner reservations to our stay, despite not having any reservations left, they didn't give up until they were able to accommodate our wishes. Check-in is 3:00. We arrived maybe twenty minutes before and our room was not ready, but they took our bags for us and had them waiting in the room, when it was ready. (We were notified at 2:59 that is was ready while we were enjoying a drink at the Granary). We then got a brief tour and were escorted to our beautiful and oh-so-comfortable King room on the second floor. I loved everything about this room...the sitting area, the amenities that came with it, the turn-down service with port wine and truffles, plus his and hers slippers, the towel warmer in the bathroom, wonderful toiletries, the super comfortable bed...I could gush on and on!

Yelp
The hotel itself is lovely, the main house is charming, the village is very cute the room accommodations are spacious, the bathrooms and common spaces could use a refresh and/or renovation. A relais chateaux that has one product for body, face, hand and shampoo is not relais chateaux material in my mind. The breakfast was delicious, the croissant felt like felt like they were coming from a top bakery in Paris. The dinner however was disappointing at best. The food was so sweet, monkfish with chocolate was a hard one to eat, the rest you can tell was executed by a skillful chef but again way too sweet on pretty much every dishes to the point that we did not feel like having dessert at the end . The wine list and champagne list was however impressive. Service was delightful.

Yelp
We stayed here for a night while passing through on our way to Florida. Really nice experience and well worth it. They have just reopened after closing for Covid. Staff is doing a great job observing safety protocols. I feel that things are slowly coming back to life. I don't think that everything is open yet. The place is like a farm that has been converted into a village. There are goats and chickens and cows that you can check out. The goats just had babies so that went over well with the daughter. Food was awesome we ordered from The Belted Goat. Had tomato bisque with sourdough which was a great soup. Followed by a really great Tuna Niçoise salad which was a really nice entree size. The tuna was tasty. Wine list is great and these days the bottles are steeply discounted. Shoutout to Brandon at the front desk for making us feel super welcome and reaching out to us prior to our stay.

Yelp
Spending a night at the Fearrington Inn is like stepping foot into a story book world. Upon entering the village, you notice little goats, their famously white striped cows, and an orderly town that is quite literally picture-perfect. I explored the entire town in about 10 minutes. So, you can imagine it's very small. This is the perfect place for a relaxing night in the countryside. We arrived late afternoon, just in time to settle in before tea. I was nervous about ruining my supper, but their afternoon tea is exquisite. Served in the bar off of the main restaurant, there is a large wood burning fireplace that is just so cozy and the ideal backdrop for afternoon tea. The scones were what dreams are made of, served with whipped cream, jam, and lemon curd. The savory bites were excellent and the sweets had us in heaven. After an afternoon nap I was recharged and ready for dinner. The dining room is formal country. The food was nothing short of excellent. The highlights where the lobster and the veal. The chocolate soufflé is a must. Service was lovely. I also enjoyed breakfast the next morning and the oatmeal was the best I've had in memory as were the croissants and the biscuits. The food here is spectacular all around. Rooms were lovely. I stayed in room 34 that had a living room, a fireplace and a beautiful bathroom and comfortable bed. A wonderful night away.

Yelp
My views on hotels, Inns, B&Bs and any other establishment that you lay your head down at, will forever be changed after staying at the Fearrington House Inn. I like to put luxury into two categories: overt and covert. Fearrington is the latter and I appreciated that. There is nothing like a stay that has all the bells and whistles without someone shouting from the treetops that the place you are staying at is luxurious. My husband and I came to stay here for New Years and I am happy to say that we started the new year on quite a positive note. Little did we know that just 30 miles or so outside of Raleigh is a little slice of heaven. The bed was comfy with lots of pillows, the bathroom was something out of your dreamiest fantasy complete with a heated towel rack and heated floors. I don't even like taking baths but the tub was so gorgeous that I had to give it a go after having one of the best meals of my life. I got out, put on a fluffy robe and slippers, went and sat by the fire and enjoyed a glass of port and some truffles. All of the things that I never knew I needed, but was so thankful to have experienced. 12/10 from me, I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Reading that one and only review is like "are you kidding me?" What a fool. This Relais & Chateaux property was absolutely exquisite. Beyond words. Delightful. Wonderful. Charming. And, having a pet friendly policy at this 5 star property, firmly ensconces this place into my travel arsenal. OMG. driving into the compound, I felt like I was at Auberge du Soleil in Napa. Loved the charm and the ambiance and seeing the wonderful gold emblem of Relais & Chateaux welcoming me to the lap of luxury. There really aren't enough words to describe all the exquisiteness of this place. It's a charming village with upscale amenities filling most every need: wine/coffee shop, Dovecote boutique, spa and store, book shop, pizza and wine area with outdoor music, gym, mid level dining option, upscale dining option and the wonderful Village with walking paths throughout nature. Oh, the walking paths were idyllic. I can't even begin to describe the natural beauty of the winding paths, flowers, shrubs, lakes and animals. Each and every staff member was exquisite, refined and friendly. Again, I don't have words for the fine dining experience. I ate breakfast there, afternoon tea and formal dinner. I literally still dream about the dishes months later. I simply can not wait to return. I've met other fellow travelers since staying there who agree with me how special this place is. If you are driving i-95, it is well worth the detour. I can not recommend this place highly enough. So delighted to have found it.

Yelp
I hate to be the giver of 3 stars, but I am. I was so underwhelmed by this Relais & Châteaux. The staff was very nice, but the rooms were not updated like the pictures on the website. We got one of the more expensive rooms with the separate sitting area and fireplace, right next to the spa. The furniture, bathroom, and decor was outdated. We found a tick in our bed sheets, and the AC did not work when it got so hot in the room (fireplace was not on) that we had to sleep with the windows open. Thermostat read 79 degrees, we were sweating. Absolutely not worth the $800ish we spent a night. The grounds were gorgeous, lots of beautiful scenery, still not worth the prices though. The animal pastures were poorly cared for in my opinion, but the cows were fat and healthy. The only reason for 3 stars is because the spa was excellent. I'll add a review for the restaurant separately as this review only applies to the the Inn. Overall, I can confidently say I would've chosen to spend the amount we did elsewhere had we known.

Michael N.

Yelp
How is this Inn a Relaix & Chateau property? My entire experience was well below expectations and frankly poor in most respects. I'm frankly being generous with a two-star rating. From entering the room you find very basic accommodations, nothing special, nothing remotely glamorous, nothing to indicate this is an expensive R&C property - as I do have experience at R&C properties and other nice hotels, city or otherwise, like basically any Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Langham, Peninsula, Intercontinental, etc. Broken furniture, a desk that is too low so the chair won't slide underneath (so much for doing work on my laptop), no coffee maker (excuse was "we have room service". Every nice hotel has room service AND an in room coffee or espresso maker.), broken lock on bathroom door (hollow wood door with cheap fixtures I should also point out), broken fan in bathroom, plain jane linoleum shower. No tile, no decorative finishing touches. Just white linoleum. No mini bar for drinks other than still water. Bottom line is this Inn is completely overrated and I do not recommend to anyone anticipating a R&C luxury property that costs more, for a reason.

Yelp
Second visit to stay at the Inn and have dinner at the restaurant..about 1 year apart. The rooms were lovely and the meal top notch but we were disappointed to find out that High Tea was not included with the room( as it was last year) The Tea is now $28pp so the 4 of us decided to skip the scones and perhaps order a bite in the rooms since we had skipped lunch anticipating the scones. $10pp plus food to deliver to the rooms($350 ea btw). Ok let's try an app at the bar with a couple of drinks before dinner. The only app served is popcorn, no other food. Oh well at least the restaurant was top notch. Overall as a full service, high end inn it was not worth the $$ but the restaurant is.

Yelp
Have stayed at this property two times over the past couple of years. The good: pet friendly, well appointed rooms, beautiful little village. The not as good: reception staff (morning shift) not very hospitable Had dinner at the Granary this past week. Sat outside so my traveling four-legged buddy could join. Server was spot on - couldn't have been more helpful. Enjoyed a signature cocktail and a bowl of PEI mussels. Very good.

Yelp
Wow! Our weekend stay at The Fearrington Hotel totally exceeded our expectations! My husband and I just came back from a romantic get-away to this special place! In our hotel room, every little detail was paid attention to: Warm towels, fresh flowers in the bathroom, lots of books, complimentary homemade chocolates, chips, candy, water, and even sherry! The afternoon tea, which is complimentary, too, was really good. The waiter served us a tower of delicious pastries, scones, and sandwiches to eat with the extremely tasteful tea. All so yummy! After having had this awesome afternoon tea in old, charming surroundings, and with a service that was worthy of a queen, we had quite high expectations to the evening dinner. And we were not dissappointed! We ordered a four-course dinner with wine pairings, and had this restaurant been located in a European capital, it would've probably earned a Michelin star; that's how good it was! Their wine list was our of this world, and so was the sommellier! Hi maintained a consistently high level of both knowledge and presentation throughout the dinner. What a pleasant experience (for once)! The dinner itself was simply outstanding, and our waiter was very attentive, but still stayed in the background which we really like (instead of asking us 500 times if everything is okay). Everything was cooked to perfection, and every plate or in-between bites were a mouthful of different flavors, just like it should be, and they were all so beautifully arranged and looked like small pieces of art. And how nice it was to be just the two of us, and just talk all night, and eat the most delicious food and drink the most complex, aromatic, flavorful wines. Three hours very well spent! Right before we left the restaurant, the sommelier handed us a rolled piece of paper: the list of all the wines he had paired with our courses, and the waiter gave us two small glasses of their delicious, homemade preserves. Pretty cool! The breakfast and the service this morning was as good as all of the above, so it just couldn't get any better! It's the most amazing place. I cannot recommend it enough!

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our first anniversary here. It was magnificent! We had reserved a standard room but were upgraded to the superior suite, compliments of the house. They tea was so good that we bought some to take home. We had dinner at the Granary and it was to die for! It was so good that we just could not stop eating! Our room was great too. There was fresh fruit and bottled water waiting for us. The bathroom was magnificent with a heated towel rack. The bed was huge and comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. The grounds are also very nice and peaceful, giving us a quiet place to read. My only complaint is that we didn't stay for more than one night!

Jake F.

Yelp
This is a rather dismal motel masquerading as a genteel upscale resort. Half of the things in our room were broken or functioned poorly (lights, dresser drawers, radio, etc.), yet instead of fixing these, the management provides a tiny white floor mat and cheap slippers at your bedside. Give me a break. The restaurant is similarly in disguise. Dishes sound superb, but are served lukewarm, barely seasoned. Virtually every dish we consumed there was a disappointment. So if you're looking for accommodations in the area, my suggestion is to keep looking.
