The Federal

This wasn’t my first visit and unfortunately my latest visit with them was nothing like before. Came here on a Sunday for brunch. We waited about 50 min to get seated without a reservation. It was a beautiful day so we didn’t mind the wait. After we placed order, food took about 25 minutes to come out. NO ONE checked on us during those time and we thought of grabbing a glass or something but we kept on waiting thinking our food will be here shortly. It would’ve been so easy for them to be like “Just letting you know our kitchen is backed up a bit but your food will be here shortly, would you like any beverages in the meantime?” Once the food came you’d hope it’s worth the wait. But the sandwich and the rosti were burnt and sparse as if they were rushing to send it out and compromising the quality. The pictures I took are before I had any bites. My bf just wanted to eat cuz he was hungry and didn’t want to wait another 25 min. I asked our server if I could get my rosti not burnt. She told me that’s how they normally serve. And if I wanted them less cooked. I just wanted golden brown. She did end up bring me a new rosti and took off a soda. They never brought ketchup that we asked. I guess some places can be hit or miss.

I’ve been coming here for over a decade, and it’s easily in my top three brunch spots in the city. The Eggs Federal with bacon AND kale is my go-to—the mushroom cream sauce over perfectly poached eggs is divine, and the potato hash and salad balance the dish beautifully. Their freshly baked scones are a must-try, and today’s warm blueberry scone with clotted cream and jam was absolute perfection! My friend had the grilled cheese and didn’t put it down until it was all devoured. Love the rustic vibe of the place and staff is so great!

A really cute brunch/lunch spot on Dundas. I don’t think my breakfast sandwich was anything super special, but the vibes are nice.

I tried their breakfast steak for brunch. The portion was okay, and it came with perfectly cooked medium-rare steak, two sunny-side eggs, fresh salad, and sourdough toast. Overall, it was good. However, the servers seemed too crowded; they were busy talking with other waitresses. When I came to pay the bills, they did not give me attention and just handled the EDC—and they didn't even say thank you. It was unpleasant for me.

We loved the funky vibes of the tiny place and cool staff. We chose the place for the ratings and the early hours. We’ll return for the food and coffee (all day breakfast). My grilled cheese was perfectly decadent. Eggs Benedict were a hit. Real maple syrup with the waffles. Then it was fun to stroll up and down the street with interesting shops.

The food is fine, everybody is nice, but it took 45 minutes for the food. Which wouldn’t be a problem but other people got theirs first even though arriving later than me. Probably would be better to dine inside (more attentive service) but the patio smelt like garbage

My visit to "The Federal" was a delightful experience from start to finish. Nestled in a cozy and intimate location, the restaurant exuded a chill and easygoing ambiance perfect for a relaxed brunch. Although parking was limited to street paid parking, it was worth the effort. The service was top-notch - friendly and fast, ensuring a pleasant dining atmosphere. The food was a highlight, with tasty dishes and generous portions that left me thoroughly satisfied. In terms of value, "The Federal" excelled, offering excellent food at reasonable prices. My only suggestion would be to arrive earlier, as seating is limited. Overall, "The Federal" provided a fantastic brunch experience, and I look forward to returning soon.
