I had a hell of a time trying to find affordable accommodations in the heart of London, and that was 2005! Luckily, The Fielding's rates have only slightly increased in the last four years (then: 80 pounds; now: 90 pounds for a verysmall single room with a toilet and shower). But for a gal traveling by herself to London for the first time, and knowing no one, it was a great central location for almost everything I wanted to do and see: museums, restaurants, pubs, cafes, sightseeing. Within walking distance or a short jaunt on the Tube you have Picadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Soho, Oxford Street, the Thames, the London Eye, Buckingham Palace. Westminster Abbey, the Tate Modern... Before I arrived in London, the proprietor gave me walking directions from the nearest Tube station, and Covent Garden is on a direct route to / from Heathrow - a welcome blessing for my airplane-swollen feet.
Pluses: the hotel is tucked away in a beautiful old building in a beautiful part of town, utterly walkable by day and early evening, and near everything a first-timer might want to see. The windows overlook a stunning stone courtyard. While the rooms are not anything to write home about, they're very clean and cheap, by London standards, and the desk clerk was always friendly.
Minuses: Tiny stairways made getting my luggage up to the 5th floor quite an acrobatic feat - luckily I packed light. From time to time, especially late at night on the weekends, the areas abutting Covent Garden can turn into the zone of the debauched teenage riot. Oh, it's probably harmless - just lots of swearing and breaking bottles and sweaty young people acting like wankers - but not my scene, to be certain. The biggest minus, however, is that the "real" nightlife in London - the stuff of legend - is far from the heart of tourist London - nary a warehouse rave in sight from theater row.
