One of our most memorable meals on the Big Island. Everything was phenomenal from start to finish. We had the pulled pork platter with sweet potato fries and pineapple, the fresh catch taco salad as an appetizer, a gumbo, and the chicken and ribs platter with sweet potato fries and beans. Every dish was packed with flavor and clearly made with care. The vibe is a cool Western-style BBQ feel, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Highly recommend getting there early when they open — they sell out of items quickly (we missed out on cake because it went fast). Definitely a must-stop spot on the big island!

Google
WOW! I loved this place. What a perfect meal. Wifey and I shared two plates...she had the BBQ sampler, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Their smoked offerings of pork & beef, perfect. I had the fish and chips, Mahi Mahi panko crusted with perfection. The highlight, the best banana cream pie I've ever had in my life!!!! The service was top notch. Felt like they really appreciated our business. We went early, I've heard there can be a long line at times.

Came here for lunch and the food was great. Probably one of the best meals I had on the island. The waitresses were super friendly and attentive. There was also a nice little shop next to it which you can check out while you wait.

At the recommendation of someone I follow on social media, I had to make this a stop while on the Big Island. The recommendation was valid. Food was excellent. The service top notch. The atmosphere casual and welcoming. I started with the daily tots. Daily tots were tots covered in pesto, bacon and melted cheese. Oh so good. Generous portion which could easily be shared. I asked the server for food recommendations before placing my meal order. There were a few sampler type options I was admiring. Turns out these were on the recommend list. I ordered the brisket sampler with grilled pineapple and coleslaw. The brisket was fork tender and perfectly cooked. I liked the grilled pineapple with paprika (?) on it. The coleslaw was not to my liking. It didn’t have a mayo base which is my preference. Decent portion size. Lastly, I did order dessert, coconut cake. Huge piece of cake. I could only eat part of the slice so took the rest home for later. It was just as good on round two 😊 Definitely a good place for bbq. Visit hungry!

Get there early or prepare for a wait. Order at least 2 orders of the cornbread, you won’t regret it. The poke was excellent, the sweet potato chips were a nice addition. Fish tacos were a little too wet, but had good flavor. Unfortunately, our brisket was clearly precut and dried out. Flavor wasn’t bad though. Also, our waitress never talked through the specials and spent most of her time chatting up her friends at the table next to us. Overall we liked it, but will be sticking to the fish portions of the menu.

Google
Where do I even begin. Some of the most amazing barbecue I've had in years! Had a sampler plate and it was phenomenal! And for dessert you must an absolutely have to try the banana cream pie, One of the best I've ever had. This will become a stop every time we come back to Hawaii for sure.

Google
Delicious food and great experience! We came as a group of five and ordered three entrees family style to start — everything was so tasty and filling that we only added two more cornbreads for dessert. The brisket, cornbread, and dill dipping sauce for the sweet potato fries were our favorites. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
This place came highly recommended by our activities coordinator in Kona and I was not dissapointed. The food came in pretty large portions and was prepared pretty well. Their in-house sauces were very good. The service was attentive, fast and friendly.

Yelp
Best food, great service and such a fun environment. Can't wait to go back again. The homemade lemonade started it off, great brisket, best slaw I have ever had and the cornbread was so delicious. Ended with banana cream pie, so yummy!!!

Yelp
We walked in with a bottle of wine in this barn and picnic table with paper napkin restaurant. We asked if they had a cork fee and they said "we can figure that out later" then they took the bottle and later told us it was $25 for our inexpensive bottle. The waitress Milani was extremely unfriendly and when she came to check on us asked how we were and ran away by the time we answered her obviously didn't care to hear how we actually "were doing". The first thing she said was there is no cornbread or grilled pineapple. We were bummed out and said to her "why?" And she said there was a mishap in the kitchen. Next after ordering the brisket plate $35 it was dry as beef jerky! And the bbq sauces they had were all spicy and did not help the dry tasteless brisket. So, as you can understand this place was way overrated and not were you want to go if you visit this island! Fair warning. I took my food to go and hopefully can go to the grocery store to buy some bbq sauce to help this dry tasteless brisket tomorrow or throw it away. There are so many places to go to so don't fall for this like we did.

Yelp
I have to admit I was starving and forgot to take pictures, but let me start with the staff, they were amazing! We were seated quickly and made sure everyone had full drinks all the time. We started with some delicious deep fried Brussel sprouts and poke nachos that were quickly devoured. As for our meals we had the sampler which consisted of pulled pork, brisket and pork ribs, I loved everything! The ribs and brisket were my favorites. We also ordered brisket and chicken Mac and Cheese that was so creamy and tasty. Finally the ribeye steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Thank you for a lovely afternoon

Yelp
Tamara seated us and is a sweet Disney princess that speaks Mandarin! It was so nice to practice with her. Even though she wasn't our server, she stopped by to chat when she had free time. Our food was fantastic. Everything was really good, but I recommend the reuben eggrolls! Very unique and tasty. The restaurant can gather a crowd, so be prepared to wait

Yelp
Every time we eat here we always leave saying we've got to come back again. Everything we've eaten from here has been amazing! I did have to come back on here though and review the desserts. I read a few reviews on here saying that the chocolate cake wasn't that great and was dry. That wasn't our experience at all! It was dense and moist and so chocolatey. It was amazing! We also tried the banana cream pie since we kept hearing raves about it. Most of us don't even like banana cream pie but it was incredible!!! And of course the coconut cake is amazing as well. We tried a coconut cake at another restaurant after we had eaten this one and it didn't even compare. We were disappointed and made a point to come back to the Fish and Hog so we could have a piece of the coconut cake here. If only we could recreate these desserts back home! Try them, you won't be sorry!!
google avatar

Bon H.

Yelp
Best service! Greeter was so friendly and filled with Aloha. Smokehouse salad was ono! Coming back again!

laura

Yelp
There is always a wait. Literally every time we've been. If you want their daily barbecue, go a little earlier. We have never been disappointed. We have loved the fish that we've tried. We have loved the hog that we've tried. Historically I do not like banana cream pie, but theirs is scrumptious. The staff is friendly. We are consistently happy customers. Just go, you won't be sad.

Yelp
The Fish and The Hog made for a fantastic nice lunch in Waimea during our full day outing. Malia was a great server who offered a variety of recommendations. The Rueben spring rolls were delicious with house smoked pastrami adding a tasty twist. The Ono sandwich was the special, which was good but not great like everyone had raved about when Ono is an option. I would highly recommend the maple bourbon smash as a drink option! It was strong with great flavor as the brown sugar maple syrup really stood out. I found the restaurant to have great ambiance with a BBQ joint style vibe and decor which I found awesome given the ranches out towards that side of the island. Highly recommend this spot if you're in town!

Yelp
Came here with my family and what a surprise--everything we ordered was a hit. The onion soup was rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. I had the fish tacos, which were fresh and well-seasoned, and sampled some of the BBQ--tender, smoky, and legit. But the real star? The banana pudding cake. Easily one of the best desserts I've ever had. Light, creamy, and just the right amount of sweet. Laid-back atmosphere, friendly service, and seriously good food. Definitely a must-stop in Kona.
google avatar

Jen A.

Yelp
While they may be known for BBQ they have a lot more to offer! The service is always a 10 and the ambiance is upbeat and casual. It's always worth listening to the daily specials and the fresh catch has never let me down! Sample the sauces and enjoy the service!
google avatar

Yelp
Often times it's hard to get really good local food on the island. Most places are at the resorts and overpriced. The other choices are hit and miss. This place is always a winner. It's just very solid BBQ. It's cute and quaint and very much the style of Waimea. There is almost always a wait, and you can see why when you come. The food and the cocktails are just really dang good. I didn't get photos of all the food, because my family was digging in before I could get photos. We got the brisket, and it was some of the best I've had. (And I used to live in Texas) The fries are really fresh and unique. Definitely not like a typical restaurant fry. The French onion soup and gumbo were spectacular! Absolutely amazing. So deep with flavor, it's like a flavor bomb in your mouth. The BBQ sauces are all unique. I love the crackseed, it's tangy and not super sweet. The only complaint, we got the fresh fish of the day and had it panko crusted. It was very fishy, and almost inedible to someone sensitive to that flavor. The service was good. Our server was friendly and helpful. The host Tamara was unbelievably sweet and accommodating. This is a gem for Big Island. I highly suggest you try to make it here.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
The best BBQ on the Big Island hands down! Excellent quality food, dessert and drinks. We are willing to drive 2 hours 1 way for this place...that is how amazing it is. Our favorites are the brisket, corn bread, fresh cut fries, and reuben sandwich.

Nick A.

Yelp
Was looking forward to eating here. I was not impressed. My $25 Rueben was so so at best. The fries were overcooked and soggy. The coleslaw had 0 flavor. Another guest had a burger, just ok and the third a sampler platter which had a few tasty items. All in all way overrated.
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
I cannot say enough things about Fish and the Hog! Every time we visit Kona this is one of the first places we eat. During a 14 day vacation we drove 30 minutes here each way 3 times!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Hearing the many raves about this unassuming BBQ place, we drove up the big hill from the Waikoloa area with a big appetite and hopeful expectations. We were greeted in the warmest way by the best hostess upon arrival. It was one of those noteworthy things, where a person is so welcoming and sincere, it's memorable long after the experience. Expectations remained high. After the briefest of wait, we were seated in the main dining area and offered drinks and menus. This is where each of us were faced with a tremendous challenge of what to order, because the selections all sounded so good. Do we go with the panko crusted fish & chips? The Mac & Cheese entree, and if so which meat (brisket, pulled pork, chicken)? A classic BBQ plate with 2 sides? A Reuben Sandwich? A Blackened Fish Plate? Decisions, Decisions... In the end, we opted for the BBQ Sampler plate and shared it. We figured this way we could get BBQ Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sausage, Ribs and sides of Cornbread & Sweet Potato fries...all in one go. Once the sampler arrived (which was before our Brussels Sprouts appetizer) we determined that both the Pulled Pork & Brisket were stunners and exactly as you would hope it could be. We've had our share of incredible smoked meats, and these are easily competitive with any of them. The table has a variety of sauces to add to your heart's content. There was a Crackseed BBQ Sauce, a sweeter Lilikoi Gold, and a more classic Paniolo BBQ sauce. I liked sampling them all, though I prefer and recommend the Paniolo. Back to the sampler...The Sausage part of the entree was also very good, but the Ribs were only so-so, which made us Sad. They just seemed a little dry to us, though maybe they just paled in comparison to the other items. The Brussels that arrived a touch belatedly were also really, really good. They are deep fried, crispy, and come with great seasoning and a dipping sauce. We loved our experience here, and splitting the protein-heavy entree with the added appetizer was plenty for us, which made the overall value excellent. Service was consistent throughout, and we'd come back gladly. We know we'd love to try something else from that incredible menu!
google avatar

Rich F.

Yelp
Huge servings. We had a very nice curry soup and 1/2 rack of ribs. The sides (Brussel sprouts and onion rings) were huge with lots of leftovers. Servers were prompt. Only negative was that all the food pretty much showed up at the same time.

Larry H.

Yelp
The food is outstanding. I had the Mac and Cheese with brisket added. Wife had the pastrami all excellent the only rub is there is a wait to get in. Obviously they have a server issue as do a lot of other restaurants, but the food is worth it!
google avatar

Owen K.

Yelp
We always have a great time at The Fish and The Hog. Their fried fish, sandwiches, and desserts are fantastic. I've had their sliced brisket twice now and although it is tender it has been a bit dry both times. The banana cream pie is 10/10. Arrive early and expect to wait 15-45 minutes during the dinner rush.
google avatar

Diane R.

Yelp
Another great meal at the Fish and the hog! I had the pineapple mint tea and loved it, slight mint flavor tea with pineapple juice. The food was delicious! Service was great. Remember to be patient as this place is packed and small. Plenty of parking in their expanded parking lot.

Bea F.

Yelp
Food is meh, over-rated and overpriced from my local viewpoint. Service was good. Too noisy for me to enjoy being out and about.
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
Was really excited for this place because it got good reviews. Waited for an hour only to be told they were sold out of barbecue, literally at a barbecue restaurant. Upon leaving, learned that they aren't in fact sold out of ribs, which was the one thing I wanted to order. Ordered the burger instead, which was mediocre at best, overcooked. Fries were greasy and limp. Would've been nice to sample some barbecue, but clearly communication between kitchen and front of house is nonexistent. Staff didn't seem to give a hoot. Second star was for the cold beer.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Some of the best mainland-Southern-style barbecue I've had in Hawaii, with a local twist. The beef brisket is juicy and tender, the shredded pork is succulent and tender, and the barbecue sauces are made with local ingredients. The service is wonderful, if you tell them you haven't been there before, they take the time to introduce you to the restaurant and the menu. The decor is old country farmhouse. Pull up a chair and get comfortable because they're going to feed you well! Don't miss the corn bread, it's incredible- tastes like fresh sweet corn with a touch of chili pepper, and the coconut cake slices are both huge and delicious!
google avatar

Tyler K.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best grub on the island. The service, drinks, and food were all ono. A definite stop when in Waimea! The sampler and smokehouse salad were both phenomenal! The Bloody Mary was great also. Maybe the best I've had here or mainland. Nice variety to choose from. Seriously melt in your mouth bbq. Sauces are great also. 3 different varieties to choose from. Line starts before they open so get here early as they get busy and fill the tables fast.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Service is great and some of the food is very good but not everything was good. My friend got the Chinese chicken wrap which was the special for the day and loved it. Her husband ordered the Chicken drumstick and also loved it. It came with a white bbq sauce that he said was really good. My husband ordered the French dip sandwich and said the sandwich had medium flavor and was a little dry. The dip was French Onion soup which he liked. I ordered the fish of the day which was mahi mahi in panko. It was dry. The sweet potato fries and regular French fries were good. The cornbread was excellent.
google avatar

Julia

Yelp
I mean...O M G I thought I died and went to heaven when eating this meal. Hands down the best Reuben and Mac n cheese I've ever had. We started with the tater tots and they were just amazing. My mom and I split the Reuben and brisket Mac n cheese and I would highly recommend others do the same. It just melts in your mouth, we were in pure bliss. The brisket plate and brisket tacos looked fantastic as well. We were so full so we didn't get to enjoy the banana cake, but we got a slice to-go!! Service was great and it's a cool farm vibe inside. It truly lived up to the hype!
google avatar

Kontos S.

Yelp
One of the best Gumbo soup I've ever had. Their brisket taco is an essential combination! Their chocolate layer cake is amazing and huge! Great atmosphere and proper staff! They are very professional! I sat at the bar and I felt so comfortable. Nick the bartender is fantastic and very knowledgeable! I can't wait to come back on this local gem!

Katrina V.

Yelp
Loved this place! Pulled pork was excellent as was the burger! Drinks were great. Staff was super nice and the atmosphere was nice too! There's a little store located off to the side you can visit while you wait :) the owner of that store is very sweet
google avatar

David R.

Yelp
This place lives up to the rating! We sat at the bar, started with some drinks and a couple of appetizers. The drinks were amazing and the bar tender is talented at making them. I had garlic shrimp and my wife had the house tots...... both delicious! For our meals I had the fish tacos, blackened. My wife had the bbq sampler and again they were both delicious!! I wasn't expecting to get such good bbq in Hawaii!!! The fish tacos were fresh and delicious also.
google avatar

Tyler T.

Yelp
Have you ever eaten so much at a restaurant that, like, your belly is full but you're still trying to squeeze a few more bites in because your taste buds have overridden your own physiology? My only regret in eating here tonight is that I didn't bring a larger stomach.
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
So darn delicious! Their pastrami is as good if not better than many Jewish deli's with famous names! And the banana pudding pie? OMG! Last but not least, we had at least four staff members come by to tell us how much they appreciated us being there. They understand that they need to get the visitors in Waikoloa to make the drive up to Waimea to thrive. They deserve every penny based on quality of service and the food is top notch!
google avatar

Terri B.

Yelp
Took my sister and her husband to enjoy the food and atmosphere of this restaurant while they visited from CA. They declared that this was by far the best place to eat while visiting Big Island Hawaii
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
After visiting the Hilo side of HI, we went home via Waimea and stopped off at the Fish and the Hog around 3pm on a Thursday where there was no wait. Here is what we ordered: Bloody Mary Fried Pickles Poke Nachos - skimpy on the poke Mac N' Cheese with Smoked Brisket Pulled Pork with Beans + Cornbread The Sampler with Sweet Potato Fries + Beer Battered Onion Rings Banana Cream Pie - While we licked our plates clean, what stood out to us was that all the fried items were A+ because the items were crispy. As for the smoked items, though everything was tender, the ribs seemed like they had the most smoke and best texture. For the sauce, there was the Paniolo Sauce and the Cracked Seed Sauce which were both unique, but on the salty side.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Worth the wait! Service was prompt and lots of inside AC seating. We came on a weekday and it was a ~45 minute wait for two but we'll worth the wait. We got the fish of the day (Mahi) and brisket tacos. The fish was perfectly cooked and a great portion for the price. Husband said tbe brisket tacos were good too. Awesome tropical cocktails as well! Would love to make it back.
google avatar

Yelp
My first experience with The Fish and The Hog was more than four years ago. I took five locals there yesterday (9/5/2025) and every one of us left very happy, very full, and raving about the excellent food and service. I had the Beef Brisket with House Fries and Rainbow Cole Slaw ($35.95). I slathered the beef brisket and the fries with their Paniolo BBQ Sauce. Their brisket STILL can be cut with a dull spoon. It literally melted on my tongue, that is how good it is. Others in my party had the Sampler Plate ($37.95), Blackened Mahi-Mahi ($27) freshly caught that day, BBQ Brisket Mac n Cheese ($26) that is so creamy, cheesy, and delicious, BBQ Brisket Street Tacos ($26), and a BBQ Brisket Sandwich ($21) (do you see a trend here?). Don't let these prices scare you. Consider this a "special occasion" and enjoy the best brisket you'll ever taste. For 6 of us, we paid $200 including non-alcoholic drinks but excluding the 4.712% sales tax and tip. That's about $33.48 per person, but well worth every penny. I also want to call out the hostess (maybe manager) who seated us and our waitress (my receipt says her name is Mailani) for their very friendly personality, helpfulness, and fantastic customer service. I return to the Big Island in Hawaii every year and The Fish and The Hog is a "Must Go To" restaurant each time I visit.
google avatar

Cody A.

Yelp
Lunch on Thursday, we had a warm and friendly welcome. Thankfully we were seated and served water right away. The restaurant was filled with by the time we finished lunch. The BBQ sampler was delicious!
google avatar

Pee Wee W.

Yelp
Absolute "Go To" every time we visit our kids and grandkids on their ranch near there...our visit to The Fish and the Hog is Already on the agenda!! Work hard all day and eat hearty and well that evening! "It just don't get no better!"
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
There's always a wait here, but the food is fresh and pretty good. Service was friendly and pretty fast. The Reuben spring rolls were really good. The BBQ Brisket French Dip sandwiches were good too. I was disappointed that even though it was about 6:00 in the evening, they had already run out of the chicken. Next time!
google avatar

Katie D.

Yelp
Sophie (10) pork street tacos The tacos were really yummy. The pork was the best I've had in Hawaii! Great amount of food. Josie (13) macaroni and cheese with pork It was soooo good and huge! You could tell the cheese sauce was homemade. Everyone was super duper nice. Katie- French Onion Soup Delicious! I have never had scallions on top but it had a good crunch and contrast to the onions in the soup. The service was above and beyond! I tried the bbq sauce and the flavor is so unique. We are taking a bottle home! I can't wait to try the slice of pie we grabbed for later. The restaurant has a cute farm feel and warmth. What a gem! Marc-Poke Bowl The poke bowl was everything I was looking for! The flavors were really well balanced and fresh. I appreciated how thin the chips were and nicely salted.
google avatar

Gabby G.

Yelp
we started out with the bbq tater tots and got the pulled pork sandwich with a salad & brisket Mac and cheese! Everything was 10/10. Also the corn bread they give you is great! They had fresh squeezed lemonade too! For everything we got it was $77!
google avatar

Jay B.

Yelp
We were lucky to have Jess too. She was very pleasant and made good suggestions to our order. We had the appetizer Tater Tots to start and it went pretty quickly as we were all hungry. The have it set up pretty good inside and we were served pretty quickly. You walk in the front they encourage you to walk through the back to leave. We only had to wait about 20 minutes during dinner time on a Monday. I thought the Sampler plate was perfect amount. The cornbread was ok but the grilled pineapple was delicious as well as the pork. The meats I liked the baby back ribs the most. My daughter had the sweet potato fries with a side salad. She liked the sweet potato fries over the regular fries. My wife had the salad with her choice of meat while my other daughter had the bacon cheeseburger and said it was really good.
google avatar

Dennis C.

Yelp
We ate at this place for lunch. I ordered pork tacos and my wife ordered barbecue chicken and ribs. Everything was delicious and we had way more food than we could eat so we took quite a bit home. The sides are very good as well. Service was friendly and we got our food quickly. Probably the only negative is that it's a bit loud in there. I would definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Vin S.

Yelp
The place was crazy busy for a mid-afternoon. I thought the Fish and the Hog would be empty, but we had to wait, which was a really good sign. It was worth the wait. I ordered the fish taco salad, which was outstanding. The fish was not overcooked and all the veggies were fresh and yummy. Mel ordered the brisket, which was tender and delicious. The ambience is country BBQ, which fits the bill nicely. The staff is friendly and helpful. 5 Stars.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots to eat while visiting the Big Island! The Fish and The Hog screams island old-school charm. Just hanging out on the front porch on tiny stools felt like a classic way to pass the time--laid back and welcoming. As for the BBQ? It's solid. I went with the sampler platter--brisket, pulled pork, and pork ribs--and really enjoyed it. Definitely worth the wait. I paired it with an island Moscow mule, which was fantastic and refreshing. But the real star of the show? The banana cream pie. Hands down the best I've ever had anywhere in the world. It will absolutely knock your socks off!
google avatar

Shirley F.

Yelp
Easily the meal we had this vacation. The food was excellent, down to every sauce and garnishment. Service was relaxed and friendly. Overall ambiance was good. Even our picky teenagers really liked this place. Come early because some menu items run out fast! Will definitely mark this place to come back next time!

Sharon G.

Yelp
Great food and service! We had a variety and plenty of leftovers!!! Took the banana cream pie to go!

Amanda J.

Yelp
So absolutely worth the wait! This was recommended to us and since my husband is from Texas we were skeptical. But it was ALL AMAZING!! We have the Brisket French Dip, two Mac and cheeses, Rueben and Brisket Plate. Stand outs were the cornbread. Brisket and onion rings. But save yourselves for the banana crème pie. SO DELICIOUS!! Everything was 10/10! We will try to get back before we leave.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
This is a place to go and eat and drink ALL the things. Cocktails were delicious. Blue Hawaii was perfect. Waimea Paloma was fantastic. Fish plate, Moink burger were all so delicious!! Service from Jess was just the right amount of attention. Go here for great ambiance and delicious food. BBQ in Waimea?! Who knew it would be this good!!
google avatar

Jodi B.

Yelp
We were greeted and put on a waitlist at 11:47am. I can see why this place sells out daily the food is good. We shared the bbq sampler and poke of the day. It was the best poke on the trip. We sat at the bar and had awesome service from Nick. I highly recommend this place in Waimea. The building is also over 100 years old which adds to the charm.
