6 Standout Smoked Fish Dips on Florida's Forgotten Coast

"Carabelle is one of those fishing villages you happen upon and instantly fall in love with — it's home to the world’s smallest police station (a phone booth), the Crooked River Lighthouse (built in 1895 and on the National Register of Historic Places), and the Lost Treasure Gallery where you can find vintage maps of Florida and the Forgotten Coast. The Fisherman’s Wife started as a food truck where owner Pam Lycett, an actual fisherman’s wife, will cook whatever you catch. The smoked mullet dip, a hometown favorite, comes from Millender & Son’s Seafood Market just down the street. It’s the unadulterated original smoked mullet dip that Harley and I love." - Carrie Honaker

It was our first visit. The food was tasty, good size portions, very well prepared and our waitress Cheryl was frequently checking to see if we needed anything else. Definitely will be going back when we are in Carabelle. When we were there a group of local fishermen came in with their catch. The kitchen cooked their fish and were serving them before we left.

Was warmly greated. Homemade blue cheese dressing was good. Dinner was served very fast. Before I had a chance to finish my salad. Grilled shrimp was over cooked and chewy. Waitress asked if it was OK as she passed by, I told her and she did not come back to my table. In her defense 4 tables came in all at once. Hostess person brought the check, it was incorrect but she fixed. Took the shrimp to go to chop up for a shrimp salad. Mistakes were made. Would not give Fisherman's Wife a second try.

Stopped in for lunch on our way down to visit family in St. Pete. The restaurant is rather small and pretty tight quarters when you first come in with not much room to wait for a table without blocking the door. Definitely in need of a facelift. Food was good, I had the blackened grouper basket with cheese grits and hushpuppies. The flavor was very good without it being too spicy. The waitress was nice and cheerful. All in all, it was a good stop.

Google
When we arrived out looked decent outside. Stepped in and there was no where to stand or sit got told to move twice as we were in the way. There definitely needs to be some outside waiting area or something built. Waitress was nice, but it was so hot in there I couldn't focus on anything. From looking around 10 tables or less in the place and if you have a party of 6 you get an automatic gratuity of 15% anymore than 4 is a struggle and table moves either way. The up side the food was fantastic, everything we got was solid and taste great. If I were to do it again I would do a call in order.

Wow! What a surprise this amazing good place to eat is! The Grouper that we had was so fresh and good. Will be coming back!💞💞💞oh...the prices are not crazy high ...very reasonable!! The way a Grouper sandwich should be! AWSOME!!!

Google
We throughly enjoyed our visit. Fun sweet staff. Fried shrimp Po Boy was spot-on, crispy Fresh shrimp, cold fresh produce, and soft hoagie bun! Ask for the Remoulade sauce!! Shrimp platter is offered grilled, blackened, or fried. If you order the bacon Double Cheeseburger be prepared for a surprise treat. Real ground beef and pattied but it is big!! Derby pie warm was soooo good. Pricey but worth it to us.

Google
We don't get through here often but when we do we always pickup from Fisherman's Wife. Great food and large portions for a good cost. Best in town!

Google
The experience was pleasant. Small and unique dining experience. Food was really good, with decent sized portions. Service was good and the server was very helpful and answered any questions we had. If you are paying with a card just be aware there is an additional fee

Yelp
Fresh and delicious. I had scallops and shrimp. It was very tasty blackened. Service is great and they also do a big carry out business. We also had a good Greek salad. The pan fried Grouper was delicious on another visit. We are going back.
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
The sea food we ordered was over cooked . We had grilled shrimp, I can see why they recommend deep Fried . The pie was decent. Service was Ok . The place could use some upgrades.

Yelp
Friendly folks and good food. Love Carrabelle!!!!! I'll be back for sure. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy!!!!!!

Wanda E.

Yelp
Our waitress was nice and friendly, but the food was less than disappointing. The only other guests were eating burgers. Our grilled snapper and fried grouper were not good.
google avatar

Trista P.

Yelp
The grilled grouper here is out of this world! My husband loved the corn and crab chowder. The mullet dip was good too. Our server Sam was attentive and very busy. Cute casual place that we will definitely return to!

Yelp
While staying in Carrabelle, it was nice to check out one of the local favorites. I enjoyed the blackened seafood platter. The snapper, scallops, and shrimp were delicious, though it was a little overdone. The flavor was excellent! Our server, Lauren, was wonderful and very friendly. The fried green tomatoes are a favorite of the family. Both my wife and I agree that they were the best we have ever had! The hushpuppies are also very delicious! TIP: Ask about the ghost of Ms. Pitts, the school teacher who owned the house before it became a restaurant. The dessert was excellent. My wife had the key lime pie and I had their signature dish, the buttermilk pie. Both were perfect. I highly recommend both. We have enjoyed our stay here and when we return will return here. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Felt like I was visiting someone's home. Service was just okay. Prices were high. Order taken and food delivered to the table. Grilled fish was a bit too salty. I ordered mixed veggies with my fish and received a very small serving. Husband got fried cod and fries and he enjoyed it. It was served very hot and was nicely battered.

Yelp
Food Was Soooo Delicious!! Great Service, waitress was kind and courteous! Bathrooms we're clean! Perfect little "Mom and Pop place." Easy 5/5 stars!

Yelp
A popular stop for seafood when we are in the area. They are in a converted house just past the IGA and before the bridge if you are headed west. You need to ask them about the ghost because this house evidently has at least one spirit still lingering and their stories just add to the ambiance. The seafood has always been fresh and delicious when we have stopped and you have to try their homemade pies. The buttermilk pie is a personal favorite. Our last visit we had the seafood platter and, although oysters were not available, there were plenty of shrimp, bay scallops, grouper, catfish and a crab cake to satisfy. The crab cake is the deviled crab variety rather than the Maryland crab cake variety but it was delicious and uniquely seasoned and I would love to eat more. Service is good friends friendly. The dining rooms are roomy and comfortable. There is ample parking in front and on the side.

Yelp
Been going here for years(back when it was a food truck) they have the best fried shrimp ever eaten. However the past few years just haven't been the same. Decided to try one more time and it was wonderful. Like the good ole days!! Welcome back Fisherman's wife. Friendly people and good food.

Dee D.

Yelp
Good food. Seafood fried perfectly Obviously a popular place Service a bit slow but servers were pleasant

Holly D.

Yelp
The food was ok but we walked in at closing in a town that rolls up at 9:00 pm It was good but greasy everyone was as super nice it was a fish camp style meal
google avatar

Morgan C.

Yelp
Don't go! It will waste your time. Waited for a table. They don't give accurate wait times. The AC is mediocre as it's still hot in there. We get seated and they never come back to take our order. They take orders of 2-5 top tables that came in 15 min after us. We just left. Don't recommend.

Paul B.

Yelp
Walked in and the staff was extremely friendly. Ordered our drinks and bam, they were there. Our food was very good. Can't go wrong with the house burger. I ordered the hodge podge and it was good even with frozen veggies mixed in instead of fresh. To finish, we shared a peanut butter pie and it was to die for. Freshly made on site.

James C.

Yelp
Wanted to try on a fish trip to Crystal River but, they were closed. Bad timeing on my part. Heard so many great reviews.

Karen C.

Yelp
Good but greasy. Service good whole in wall. Does have grilled fish. I liked it. After eating at other places down I the coast, this place is awesome

Karen M.

Yelp
Saw mixed reviews & almost skipped trying the food here. Glad I didn't! My platter was fried to perfection (I requested fried light). I got the grouper grilled. Could have been cooked a tiny bit less & seasoned a little more. The service was good but we went at a slow time. He got the hamburger steak & enjoyed it. The coke slaw & okra were very good too.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
Great food, home like atmosphere with friendly service. Great grouper sandwich and generous portions

Doug D.

Yelp
Food was delicious, but expensive. Also, no hush puppies included with meal entrees???

Michael P.

Yelp
The food was excellent with very good portions. The staff was very friendly and very attentive. I will definitely be going back next time I am in the area.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
It has been a little while since my last visit (I live in Talahassee). As always the food is great and good atmosphere by the staff! :)

Yelp
One hostess and one waitress were on, for a restaurant full of people....I even head the owner call, in the middle of this chaos...but she never showed up to help. The service was amazing, considering how busy they were....the food was horrible. They have new cooks who apparently, can't cook. Don't eat here, if they can't cook a burger, they can't cook anything.

Kelly R.

Yelp
A great experience! I had the salad with seafood - scallops, shrimp and grouper served on top of mixed greens. The seafood was perfect! The salad was fresh and a large portion. My husband had the shrimp plate and that was also good. We ended the meal with delicious pies, the buttermilk pie was a first for us! Great food, very friendly and attentive service.

Michael N.

Yelp
Camping in town. Not many choices for dinner and this adds to the list. The staff is unorganized, the floor dirty as hell. Might as well eat at shitty fast food seafood restaurants. The only reason reviews are half way good is because it's about the only place in town. Food is marginal at best for price. Save your time and money. Go 15 minutes down the road for decent food. Restaurant impossible would have a field day here. Don't get a to go box just scrape off your shoes when you get home you will have enough food on them.

Yelp
Finally got in The Fisherman's Wife to get our fried grouper. It was worth the wait; I loved the big thick filets. The hushpuppy were good enough, but could have used some chunky onion. At least that is my preference. The slaw didn't suit me; I did not eat it. But everyone likes different slaw I think so try it. It might suit you just fine. The fries were hot and fresh and perfectly salted and the cheese grits were delicious. Everyone there was super friendly and loved to share the tale of the origins of the restaurant. i think the old house might be a grandparents; I didn't hear that part well and might have misunderstood. It's a glorious old cottage.

Yelp
My sisters and I ate here today and it was fantastic. Sister's had fisherman's salad and wife's salad both had shrimp and were fresh and delicious. I had shrimp quesadillas which were absolutely amazing . It was crowded but our server was nice and friendly even though she was rushed. We got our food quickly even though they were busy. Sit in the back room by the windows if you can. Great experience.

Yelp
Oh my! Some of the best seafood we've had and we've been coming to the panhandle for many many years. This place is home feeling, small, and the food was generous and delicious. We had the grouper sandwich, shrimp basket, crab cakes, and grouper basket. All of the items were fresh hot and so tasty. We WILL be back to visit soon!! Key lime pie was some of the best ever tasted. So fresh. Cheryl was a great server with great suggestions on food options for us as new comers.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
We stopped mid afternoon. They were finishing up with a large group. When we came in had a choice of seating. Noticed they were doing a good many take out orders. We ordered a platter and split it. It was blackened. Everything was delicious. We also had 2 small children with us. They really didn't eat much. The waitress did help out with them by bringing paper and crayons.

Yelp
Great food and service. Always fresh! Convenient location on Hwy 98! Convenient to downtown Carrabelle.

Laura T.

Yelp
Southern hospitality Small town charm Homemade dessert Prices are average Service is quick and friendly You don't have to wait for a refill here Great cooks that know what they're doing You won't be disappointed

Emily H.

Yelp
The best place to eat in Carrabelle! Once I Found this gem, we went multiple times during our one week vacation. I suggest this restaurant to everyone
google avatar

Cindy F.

Yelp
Worst birthday ever there. Everyone's food was cold, they just microwaved my friends fish and onion rings and said they gave him new food, I asked for the Greek salad without onions and green peppers, didn't get any red or yellow peppers and was loaded with onions, so I couldn't eat any of it, they refused to take it off the bill, though I didn't eat anything, said they would have to ask the manager first. My daughter couldn't eat her cold fries and her burger was barely warm. Was a very bad meal all around.

Yelp
Quaint and inviting inside and out! We stopped on our way to Carrabelle Beach because of great reviews for their Tallahassee location. We both ordered the shrimp baskets that came with one side and hush puppies, portions were plentiful for $14, a bargain these days. Everything was cooked to perfection...they served crackers with fresh, delicious, homemade coleslaw as a complimentary hors d'oeuvres. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. We enjoyed the food and the ocean view while dining in one of the quaint and cheerily decorated rooms, we will definitely be back! Highly recommend! The menu also includes larger dinners. Servers were pleasant and upbeat, it was a great experience.

Yelp
I don't understand the negative reviews because what I experienced was totally different. Grilled shrimp basket and blackened shrimp basket were both executed well. We came from Destin and the food was as good or better than the long established quality beach side restaurants. And the price was very reasonable compared to other shops in the area. Our baskets came with a generous portion of shrimp, fries, cheese grits, cole slaw, and 2 fantastic hush puppies. Not huge tourist trap platters but way better tasting. Key lime pie was very nice!
google avatar

Mark O.

Yelp
Food is aways good and the fried grouper is excellent. Portions are large and everyone is friendly.
google avatar

Kris D.

Yelp
We both had fried shrimp baskets. The shrimp was crispy, but a bit overcooked. It's an okay place to go if it's nearby, but honestly, there are so many other choices.
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
I came here twice while on vacation, and it was a neat family owned restaurant. Both waitresses we had were nice, but the service was slow and it was hard to get a refill. I tried their Grilled Scallops and fried flounder and they were very good. As far as sides go, I enjoyed the sweet potato fries, hush puppies, and corn nuggets. I wanted to try the Derby pie, but they were sold out both times. The chocolate cake was decent, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend. Overall this is a pretty good restaurant, I only wish the portions were larger for the price that we paid.

Mandi M.

Yelp
This place is delicious. I like chicken. In Carrabelle, it is hard to find good chicken. Well...it was. Then I found The Fisherman's Wife, where I found GREAT chicken! Very fresh! CHERYL IS A HOOT AND A HALF! Grilled potatoes were yummy. Onion rings were good. Had a very generous pour of pinot grigio. That fisherman is a lucky dude.

Yelp
First, I have to say; I eat here regularly when I am in Carrabelle on fishing trips. I enjoy it. The food is simple, genuinely good , seafood fresh and relatively inexpensive. For the haters, this ain't Noo York. Get over it. You are dining in the forgotten coast of Florida. I am posting and giving this review because I hope the owners read it. I am giving you a 2. Why? I asked for my grouper sandwich "po boy" style. You said no. Why? The bread. Po Boys come on a baguette, grouper sandwiches on a hamburger bun. You declined my request for the baguette, "they're for specials". It's a freakin piece of bread you idiots. I would have gladly paid an up charge for the difference. Say $1. However, as our waitress pointed out- they're just really weird about substitutions here. Oh yeah, my son ordered fries not the soggy ass grilled potatoes. I don't accept substitutions either. You suck

Don G.

Yelp
Overpriced... paid $28.00 for a two selection seafood dinner, ordered Snapper and Shrimp... the fish clearly wasn't Snapper... it was the much darker, tough Amberjack....with bloodline attached... I ate it since I was hungry...also sat a long time without drink refill... a younger waitress was asked if there were refills, she said YES, and was obnoxious and continued to ignore me, passing my waitress several times without mentioning anything to her....just Rude.... I would never eat there again....
google avatar

Phillip M.

Yelp
Brought in some fish for the cook your catch. Not good at all their menu it's looked good. But it wasn't on my table or sea food.
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
I had the 2 choice plate with blackened Grouper and Shrimp with cheese grits and Cole slaw. Very good food. Small family-owned business with good food!!! Highly recommend! Had Key Lime Pie to go...it was more of a cheese cake than a true key lime pie.

Spike K.

Yelp
Stopped in for early dinner, were the only customers. Wife had crab cakes, I had seafood platter. Service and food were excellent. Meals were fairly priced, portions were large, all items were cooked to perfection. Waitresses were polite, and offer suggestions on the menu, cocktail, tartar sauces were excellent, waitress suggested that wife try romalade sauce on her carb cakes which was tasty. Would definitely stop again when in area.
google avatar

Sharon J.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! Great home cooked food. Chicken fingers were freshly made and so are hush puppies. My husband loved the blackened grouper. Great waitress too! Highly recommend.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Camping in Carrabelle Florida and decided to get carry out. My wife wanted a fried grouper sandwich and I was looking for a salad. I thought I had ordered what was the Fisherman's Wife salad which was only supposed to be berries, fruit, nuts and what is normal for that type of salad. They told me 15 minutes and it was promptly ready at that time. They inquired as I received the dinner what condiments I would like to accompany the dinner. Went back to the camper and opened the dinners and found my wife's was just what she wanted. Great presentation and awesome taste. I on the other hand did not receive the salad I ordered but I received what is named the Fisherman. That included shrimp, scallops, and fish to go along with the rest of the fixings. I was not upset about the mix-up because everything in the salad was awesome.
google avatar

Mitt N.

Yelp
Had the Oyster Basket for lunch on the recommendation of the authors of "Road Food" by the Sterns (guide to eating for food tourists like us). Very good. Solid Gulf style. This little place is in a former house, on the side of U.S.98. This highway itself should have at least the caché of Route 66, because it's more interesting. This is the most forgotten of the Forgotten Coast, and probably the most Southern of all Florida's coasts (Carrabelle and its environs). The place is full of friendly locals. Be ready to talk. The owner is actually the fisherman's wife. Good seafood is guaranteed. Interestingly the staff had not ever heard of the aforementioned book. If you are traveling westward from this area to the "Emerald Coast" be ready when you get there for prices several times higher for the same quality and quantity as at this little spot.
google avatar

Suzanne P.

Yelp
We stopped here for a late lunch and was not disappointed! We just wanted a couple of appetizers to hold us over before dinner. We had the peel and eat shrimp and the fried green tomatoes and both are very highly recommended. The service was excellent. Don't miss this place if staying in the area.
google avatar

Lynette H.

Yelp
I had fried snapper which was very good. My husband had blackened scallops that tasted like rubber , about half a cup ( very small) . The sides were delicious. Hush puppies and coleslaw.
google avatar

Brenda B.

Yelp
Cute and quaint! Friendly and thoughtful staff! Amazing grouper basket with all the fixings, including must-have hush puppies!
