For our recent wedding anniversary we decided to choose somewhere relatively local and stay overnight so that we could both enjoy drinks without having to organise taxis, so we chose the Five Arrows and it was an excellent decision. I booked by phone, as I prefer to do, and was offered a choice of two rooms but plumped, on the advice of the lovely lady in Reception, for Room 11, a large, elegant and comfortable ground floor room in the courtyard. It was beautifully quiet, looking out onto the car park it’s true but a pleasant view nonetheless with window boxes of begonias and plenty of shrubs as well as cars. And it was quiet, whilst rooms looking out onto the front of the hotel would have had main road traffic noise to contend with. The bed was very comfortable and there were the usual tea and coffee making facilities, plus a Nespresso machine (which we didn’t use), iron and board and a Dyson hairdryer. Toiletries in the large bathroom were by the White Company. Dinner in the pleasant dining room was excellent: we had three courses, which we don’t normally do, and enjoyed everything: deep fried soft-shell crab for both of us, beautifully pink lamb for me and duck for my husband. We ended with a truly delicious honeycomb parfait. You order breakfast the night before, ticking off items on a sheet which you then hand in when you go to dinner: I find this can be a nuisance as I never know whether I’m going to want a large cooked breakfast after a large dinner, but I understand the logistics of it. My husband had smoked salmon and scrambled egg and I had the avocado and poached eggs on toast, which were both very good. In fact I had over-ordered as I’d also ticked the box for ‘croissant and pain au chocolat’ assuming they would be miniature pastries. They weren’t! A major plus for the hotel is the staff, all of whom were very pleasant and helpful. We were booked in on a Midweek Break offer which as well as a complimentary drink includes admission to the house and grounds of Waddesdon Manor. For visitors who are not National Trust members this would, at the time of writing, cost £27 per adult, so this is a significant saving and the house and enormous grounds are well worth visiting. As we have been several times we didn’t visit this time but we fully intend to return to the Five Arrows (maybe next year’s anniversary?) and maybe we’ll do that next time.||||This review was accidentally posted onto the hotel's restaurant page so it appears twice!
