Rohan Marley on Hospitality, Wellness, and His Favorite Town in Mexico

"During a rejuvenating weekend at the Fives Oceanfront Puerto Morelos I dined on ceviche and vegan Jamaican patties, soaked in a generous jetted tub on my balcony, and watched the sun dip below the sea from the rooftop infinity pool; the hotel, which opened in July 2020 and sits as the only property on this part of the beach, feels low-key and secluded in Puerto Morelos—a charming fishing community protected by mangroves and the second-largest barrier reef in the world—and the real highlight for me was speaking with Rohan Marley about his family's history in hospitality, the importance of wellness, and why he thinks Mexico is a special destination for the African diaspora." - Glynn Pogue

We stayed for 7 days at this resort the last week! I really wanted to love it! Puerto Morelos is such a great town. The room had a great view and the food was good. We noticed all week that if you were not a part of travels club/ time share you got treated worse. Everyday the staff would go down and save the best seats at the beach for the time share people. They would take their order first and even if you ordered before them you got your food or drink after them. They really prioritized them over others! It made the trip a lots less enjoyable watching this happen all week! If it weren’t for that I would have loved this place and wanted to come back as it is a small nice hotel in such a cute town!

Our server in the restaurant we dined for the most part was Fernando. He was excellent in every way, communication, service, dedication to his position. He went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of in every way, every time. I can say the same for the other waiters we had, but when he was working his shift,we asked to be sit at his station because we knew the service was going to be great. The best restaurant we ate at while we were here was the downstairs ground floor restaurant Romarley. The food was always great, better to our dining preference that compares to back home. Overall this was a good resort,we had some problems, but everything was addressed so all is good! Will recommend to anyone if you just want to relax, it doesn't have activities like most, but that's the kind of resort it is, the staff went out of their way to accommodate.

We stayed at this resort for a week, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by Diego, who truly made our stay seamless. He ensured that every single request we had was taken care of, and honestly, I can’t say enough good things about him. His level of service, attention to detail, and genuine care went far beyond expectations. Yoe is an incredible soul who consistently went above and beyond in everything she did, always with a smile and great energy. Giovanni was also extremely helpful at La Mare restaurant, where the food deserves a solid 10/10—absolutely exceptional. Overall, the level of service at this resort is unlike anything I’ve experienced before. The food is outstanding, the staff is remarkable, and the beach is one of the nicest I’ve seen. I highly recommend this resort and would not hesitate to return.

This resort is obviously beautiful, and overall we had a nice stay. The staff were all great, and it was in a nice location. It was easy to walk to town. ||However, we did have some issues. When we booked, we found the website to be very confusing. We called to reserve because of this and were forced into the all inclusive package. We kept asking for the price without it and they would only give us a price for all inclusive. The food at the resort is mediocre. We would have much rather have walked to town everyday for food, as the local restaurants are significantly better, but we would have been wasting money if we didn’t at least go to breakfast and dinner. The wait staff were absolutely fantastic though! We loved talking to Hair, and every person we talked to were very friendly. We kept being pushed into going to this presentation for their travel club and it took double the time they said it would. Luckily, the person giving the presentation was very nice, and they were not pushy about joining. They did give us a free 50 minute massage for going as well. ||The last things are minor, but we forgot our shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo they provide does not lather well and did not work for my hair. Be sure to remember your own shampoo or buy some in town. Also, they didn’t tell us about the activities! We loved doing crafts with Gustavo! Highly recommend checking those out. ||Overall, we would come back, but we definitely would not get the all inclusive next time.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel and can’t say enough good things about the service and cleanliness. The rooms and common areas were spotless thanks to the excellent housekeeping team, and it was clear that great care is taken to maintain a clean and comfortable environment. The staff truly made the experience exceptional—Eli, Candido, Jocelyn, and Gustavo, along with housekeeping, were all incredibly helpful, attentive, and friendly. They went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect and made me feel genuinely welcome. I would absolutely recommend this hotel and would gladly stay here again.

Our only regret about our 4-night stay was that it wasn't a few more nights. We loved that it was quiet, and spent a lot of time soaking up the view of the beach from our room's balcony with its own private hot tub. The hotel's "butler service" made our stay completely effortless. Candido brought us each a hot "lunch box" on the mornings we left early on excursions, made us our restaurant reservations, reserved lounge chairs by the infinity pool, and handled our transportation needs. There were a couple of maintenance issues with our room's amenities and he also did the troubleshooting for us on those to our satisfaction. ||A couple of reviews have mentioned long waits to be seated for dinner. We never had a moment's wait, and I never saw any one else waiting to be seated either, although I'm told that mid-December is high season there. We thought the food was delicious, and a longer stay would have been a welcome opportunity to sample more of the variety of offerings. We had a lobster dinner that absolutely knocked our socks off, and the Caribbean flavors on offer at the Romarley Beach House were very authentic. The house wine (Sauvignon Blanca and 3 other options) was delicious and included at no cost, so we never felt the need to buy a bottle of something else.||The resort is beautiful. The location is amazing. The food and service are great. Don't hesitate to take it all in on your next trip to Puerto Morelos!

We had an amazing stay at The Fives Oceanfront! The atmosphere is gorgeous, the rooms are beautiful, and the whole property has such a relaxing, upscale vibe. Our group of 11 traveled together, and every single person loved it. The restaurants were fun and delicious—although only two were open during our stay, so meals felt a bit repetitive by the end. Thankfully, the town right outside the resort is incredible, with tons of great food and things to explore. The absolute stars of our experience were Hair (server), Hugo, Victor the bartender, and Gabriela. They truly made our trip unforgettable with their kindness, energy, and exceptional service. As for booking a large group, it was effortless and completely stress-free, which I really appreciated. Overall, we loved our time here and would absolutely recommend it!

There is no ill will nor malicious intention on this review. This was our 4th stay and unfortunately it would be our last. Since 2022, we have been visiting this hotel every year and have seen it's downfall with a new management take over in 2024/2025. Upon the new management take over the superb gastronomy and craft cocktail experience this hotel once had took a downfall.||1. Food under new management: No menu for any Mexican food except for guacamole and beans (no traditional favorites i.e. NO TACOS, QUESSADILLAS, ENCHILLADAS, ..even basic salsa....NONE). Although the Italian restaurant for Dinner is a 4/5 stars, we were shocked to the food menu changes.||2. Mixology/cocktails under new management: New bartender staff seem to lack the training and expertise of the previous mixologists who curated a cocktail menu that was perfection. Today: craft cocktails and the former unique mixology drink menu no longer not exists and customers are left just experience sugary/pedestrian bar drinks.||3. Upstairs rooftop restaurant/bar ADULTS ONLY SECTION: Under the new management same comments in section 1 &2 above. In years past there was chill lounge/down beat music, an elevated mixology drink menu, and a breakfast-lunch menu that was delicious and had mexican food options that were beautifully curated. Today in 2025, its all been reduced /removed; even the music system was not working at the time so no chill down tempo music.||4. STAFF AND ROOM: All the staff are great, hard working, courteous, and welcoming. Rooms were always pristine and kept clean. But under the new management, we observed and heard they replaced the highly skilled bartenders/mixology staff for lower waged work force who were underskilled....it was apparent.||5. BEWARE OF CONDO OWNERS IN THIS HOTEL (KAREN ALERT): The hotel is a timeshare - We encountered negative experiences with the older aged condo owners who had an arrogance/entitlement with the resort amenities i.e. taking prime spots in beach chairs early in the a.m, controlling the music selection with DJ who occassionally appeared on the beach, and were talking so loudly amongst themselves and boasting about their condo ownership; overall they acted like OLDER KARENS! But they were too cheap to buy drinks at the bar and brought their own in a plastic flask?I dont want to see/hear that kind if attitude-rhetoric on my vaca.
