The Best Places to Visit in Scotland | Condé Nast Traveler

"Flodigarry Hotel is described as an off‑compass outpost on Skye with a fancy‑pants design bar and suites that feel surprisingly luxurious—an unexpected alternative to the island’s busier hubs." - Mike MacEacheran

Myself and my partner had a very idyllic 3 night stay in the Flodiarray Hotel. We loved the vintage styling of the rooms, yet had all the modern conveniences like the smart tv and coffee maker. The food was exceptional. The flavour and quality of each meal, there are no words. Would be any foodies dream. The location is perfect for taking in the wilds of Scotland/Skye. It was a breathtaking location. Well suited for hiking. Big thanks to all the staff of the hotel for being so welcoming and making our stay so memorable.

What a wonderful find the flodigarry hotel was. Set in the hill facing the sea the views were gorgeous. The staff were just amazing and the food was perfect. The room was very spacious with a huge shower and a bed that felt like I'd died and gone to heaven. Amazing all round. A perfect night off the road. I'd definitely stay again if travelling to the Isle of Skye.

Very pleasant hotel in a special remote location. The room was well appointed with a great sea view. Good bar area. Plenty of parking. Dinner in the restaurant was very good. I was concerned about the food having read some poor reviews but the standard was in fact high. All staff polite and professional, especially the waiters. -1 as it did ultimately feel overpriced, £550 for one night in what I’d consider a standard room plus dinner. I assume the price reflects the logistics of running a hotel in such a remote place. I notice there were very heavily discounted rooms available online if booked at short notice. Overall we had a pleasant stay.

My daughter was on holiday from St Andrews University so I went over for the week. We were very impressed with the Flodigarry Hotel. The place is beautifully situated perched overlooking the sea with a mature forest as a back drop. The people who work there are all quite friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and well kept. The old school bathroom fixtures were fun. The bar was one of the classiest I'd been in in a while. Skye IPA on tap was excellent and I liked the wood stove near our table. My only nit would be that the duvet on the twin beds were tiny! We asked for larger ones and they gladly accommodated us. If I ever go back, I'll surely stay here again.

Gorgeous, elegant hotel in a stunning location. We loved it so much we extended our stay an extra night. Excellent service. Comfortable, well-appointed room. Great shower. Lovely grounds. The restaurant was very good as well. Fresh, local ingredients prepared well.

One of the most beautiful views I have ever seen in a hotel room! We stayed here recently for 2 nights in the Signature Master Suite. From the moment I stepped into the room, I couldn't take my eyes off the view. The pictures on their website don't do it justice. It was absolutely stunning! The only reason I didn't give the room 5 stars was the bathroom. It wasn't very functional with absolutely no place to put any of your toiletries. Other than that, our stay was amazing and I would highly recommend! The food at the restaurant was delicious, the staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating, especially to my food allergies. The property was peaceful and quiet. I would definitely stay here again!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you’re visiting the Isle of Skye, The Flodigarry Hotel is an absolute must. Perched above the rugged coastline with sweeping views that feel almost too beautiful to be real, this place delivers the perfect Highland dining experience — and then some. We stopped in for lunch and were completely blown away. The ploughman’s lunch was generous, fresh, and full of flavour — a perfect balance of local ingredients served with real care and attention. And the baked Brie? Simply unforgettable: rich, creamy, and indulgent without being heavy, it’s the kind of dish you’ll be dreaming about long after you leave. What really elevates the whole experience, though, is the service and ambience. Warm, welcoming staff who clearly care about what they do, paired with a relaxed, elegant atmosphere and breathtaking views across the sea — it’s everything you hope for in a Highland escape. Whether you’re exploring Skye for a day or a week, make sure The Flodigarry Hotel is on your list. It’s more than a meal — it’s a highlight of the island.

We had the absolute pleasure of staying at the Flodigarry Hotel on the Isle of Skye, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine warmth and hospitality. The staff were not only attentive but also took the time to have real conversations, which made our stay feel incredibly personal and welcoming. The food was nothing short of exquisite — every meal was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. It was a true highlight of our stay and showcased the best of local Scottish ingredients. And of course, the views… breathtaking doesn’t even begin to cover them. Surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of Skye, the hotel offers stunning panoramas that make you pause and appreciate the beauty of Scotland. The Flodigarry Hotel combines charm, comfort, and authenticity in a way that is rare to find. We can’t recommend it highly enough and are already looking forward to returning one day.

Yelp
At its core this is an old-school English resort hotel with a turn-of-the-21st-century update. (I didn't visit the additional cottages, which seem to be much more contemporary.) The hotel itself has a lot of charm and some stylish touches, but could use some real updating such as dealing with as the potholes in the drive and a few worn and uncomfortable examples of furniture and textiles. The restaurant as well has ambition, but could use a bit of sprucing up and modernization to take it to 2020+ boutique standards. All that said, it is a fantastic location if you want a remote experience with easy accessibility to all of the scenic excursions in the northern part of the Isle of Skye. Also, friendly, personable staff and a great bar.

Yelp
Flodigarry becomes FLOPIGARRY: Revealing the Truth of FLOPIGARRY's Numerous Shortcomings I have never written a bad review in my life, but I must save others from staying here! Our recent stay at the "Flodigarry" hotel, currently up for sale and better described as FLOPIGARRY, was a profoundly disappointing experience that left us dissatisfied on multiple fronts. The overall state of the hotel and its facilities, combined with the presence of overworked friendly staff, painted a troubling picture. The hotel's cleanliness was surely lacking, with dust and dirt seemingly everywhere and smashed bugs lining the window sills, creating an unsettling atmosphere. No one is vacuuming this hotel! There is dirt everywhere! The room's bathroom was a disappointment, with unclean surfaces, a lack of proper maintenance, and even a brown toilet bowl, adding to our discomfort. Our room was nothing short of a repulsive smell of mold and must, emitting an overpowering odor. Desperate for relief, we resorted to opening the windows wide, a measure that seemed to alleviate the smell despite being against the rules. Not only was our room an unsightly mess, but the bathroom was equally unpleasant, marred by dirt in the corners and a floor that was peeling up. Shower facilities proved equally inadequate, with minimal pressure during the day and a chilly morning shower experience that was less than pleasant. However, it's worth noting that hot showers were available at night, providing a rare moment of relief. The breakfast, though accommodating for dietary needs, failed to impress. Oily greens, lackluster coffee, and dirty glasses and cups detracted from the dining experience. The rotting wood in the dining room only further underscored the neglect apparent throughout the premises. In the midst of these issues, the staff remained a positive highlight. While overworked and stretched thin, they were consistently kind and accommodating. It was sad to see them running around and trying so hard to do their job. It was evident that they were working at the hotel from morning until late at night, putting in extensive hours. Despite these disappointments, the one shining aspect of our stay was the breathtaking view of the lake from our room. The beauty of the surroundings only served as a stark contrast to the lackluster conditions within the hotel itself. In conclusion, our time at the "Flodigarry" hotel (or rather, FLOPIGARRY) was a far cry from the experience we had hoped for. It's like staying in a dirty and weirdly decorated haunted house. The website is a ruse; don't believe the pictures or what you read. It's all lies, except for the breathtaking view. Until substantial improvements are made, it's advisable for prospective visitors to explore alternative lodging options. The status of the hotel being up for sale further highlights the challenges it faces and adds to the concerns about its current state. I wish I listened to the reviews I read. They are all accurate!

Yelp
This review is specifically for their dining room as I didn't stay at the hotel. First of all, as you drive here, you will feel like you made a wrong turn somewhere because the roads are not paved and narrow. Trust your GPS/map, because the tight turns open out into a beautiful space and a mansion/castle hybrid that is very charming. We stumbled onto this place for lunch and was delighted to find such a great building and restaurant tucked away after a confusing drive. I had the Skye Cullen Skink, a super creamy thick fish stew served with a little bun. It was comforting, hearty, and filled me up. There were too many potatoes in my bowl, so I had to leave them behind. My traveling companions loved their own lunch choices also. The atmosphere is more high-end and fancy than your typical pubs, so this would be the perfect place to have a special dinner or treat yourself to a drink on the terrace of a nice summer day. Extra star for the amazing views!

Yelp
We were not (yet!) in yhe hotel, but we enjoyed some time in the garden restaurant. Extremely quiet, beautiful view, very clean and friendly. We're already making plans to come back. What a find!!

Yelp
The view is beautiful but the service isn't great, especially if you're a single / solo traveler. I was quite disappointed as I stood there for nearly 15 min before anyone asked if I needed a table. I got the scone and a cappuccino which were nice but on the expensive side as you'd imagine (£7).

Yelp
This is for the soup cafe only. We did not stay at the hotel. The soup is delicious! I had the Scottish Onion soup and my husband had the Scotch Broth. We would order both again. We opted for a scone for dessert and we're overwhelmed by the size! I only ate half of mine. I recommend the scone but split it, after the soup the whole scone was a bit too much.

Yelp
Went there for a late dinner, since nothing else was open. It was on the expensive side, but delicious. Good selection of drinks, and a fantastic menu. The hotel looked very nice as well.

Yelp
We prefer full-service hotels rather than b&b, and in Staffin there is only one hotel, so I booked a flagship double room in Flodigarry and requested sea view in the booking. Upon arrival we were led into a room overlooking the parking lot with the fire escape right outside the door. In the beautiful isle of skye this is probably the worst view you could possibly get. The room itself has some "antique" (i.e. old) furniture but nothing remarkable. "Original plumbing", I was told, is still in the bathroom which we did not use and hence cannot testify if it actually works. Travelers beware of this "bonnie prince charlie room" -- I cannot believe they actually have the guts to charge 315 pounds for it! Usually you get what you pay for but this place is an exception! Although this is supposed to be a hotel, there is no reception: no front desk, no staff. You have to ring a bell on the wall and stand by the stairs to wait for someone to show up, which can take a while. A gentleman was already waiting when I arrived; and together we waited for at least another 10 minutes for someone to show up. I've seen more accessible b&bs. No elevator. No bell-boy. The ground is clearly not well kept and totally feels run-down. Needless to say we were utterly disappointed. It was 6:30pm, we were very tired having driven from Fort William, so we were prepared to settle despite of being extremely unhappy about the situation. To keep my options open I spoke to Betta the manager, explaining we wish to cancel if I could find an alternative accommodation. The wifi in the hotel was nonexistent and the phone had no signal, so at that point I could not get any information off the internet yet. Betta told us with a smirk that there was absolutely no other hotel nearby and we'd have to go back to Portree to find anything. I found the attitude unacceptable and commented no wonder the hotel's tripadvisor reviews were slipping. Then she actually started complaining about me bitterly to my husband! Incredible! Never seen anything like that. Of course my husband could not agree with her! Then Betta, as the hotel manager, actually declared that she wanted us to leave! I don't know what kind of hotel is this?!!! Especially given what she said herself earlier that there was no accommodation available in this part of the world and Portree was a good 45 minutes' drive away? How can anyone in the hotel business treat their guests like this? We picked up our bags and left the premise. Fortunately we found a beautiful little B&B 10 minutes' drive away with an incredible sea view so it ended well for us. I am still waiting for this hotel to refund the 100 pounds deposit I put down for the stay. The booking was done through bookings.com, and Betta insisted that I had to cancel with Bookings.com, which I did. Then she wanted me to email my bank account to her for the refund. Now I paid the deposit on my credit card, so she could have just reversed the charge. Sending it to my bank is not only unnecessary but also will cost me. I don't know if this is purely out of ignorance of modern finance, or just another way to make sure her "guests" suffer? I had to dispute the charge with my credit card company, hoping that would resolve the issue. What a nightmare. Betta I hope you are reading this. Turning away and stranding your guests at night knowing there's no other hotel in the area, and then not even refunding the deposit? Please find another career! For my fellow travelers: There are so many better places to stay than this horrible establishment. For those who prefer full-service accommodations I can highly recommend the house over-by (the three chimneys) in Colbost and Cuillin hills hotel in Portree. Any of them can serve as the base for exploration of the entire isle. If you want to stay in Staffin I'd recommend a b&b. There are many of them dotting along the road and they all have fantastic locations. We stayed in Seadrift - gorgeous unobstructed sea view and great host! Finally another word of caution: beware of bookings.com. They are absolutely no help when things go wrong like this. The representative was very rude over the phone and offered no assistance. I myself will never use bookings.com again. Do use a good American credit card - they do offer a last resort.

Yelp
I am from the USA. This was my first trip to Scotland. Flodigarry envisions itself as a very posh restaurant and country house. Perhaps this is true but it was not my experience. After the customary ordering of "starters" and entre' in a room other than the dining room, we were escorted to the dining room. We were dining at 8:00 p.m., had reservations, etc. In the middle of the room sat a family of 5. Mother, Father and 3 small children. Why these parents would subject adult diners to their children is beyond my comprehension. The smallest child was often crying and the other two were loud. The parents, of course, made no attempt to provide their children with any supervision or encourage them to be quiet. It was not the dining experience I had envisioned or paid for. The food, although good, was sparse and not worth the money. All in all, I had better meals at all the pubs I visited while in Scotland where I expected the atmosphere to be noisy and rowdy and certainly it was. The wait staff was less than friendly - all going along, I suppose, with the "posh" atmosphere. Save your money and or eat at Flodigarry when you are sure there are no kids in the dining room.
