I visited the Foodbank last Friday with a dozen other volunteers from RSVP, the Organisation of Senior Volunteers. Transport was provided by RSVP to bring us from Bishan Bus Interchange to Pandan Loop, where the Foodbank was located.
The first impression at the site was the sheer amount of donated items within the cavenous warehouse-like space within the Foodbank.
We were briefed on the tasks assigned for the group. Basically, we needed to check the expiry dates of donated items, sort them into the right categories and weight, and place them at the right shelf.
It was certainly a bit overwhelming for me as a first time volunteer at the Foodbank initially. Nevertheless, the group started to get things moving, and we managed to clear 5 pallets of donated items in the two-and-a-half hours we were there.
We needed to put aside a fair portion of the donation as they were already expired. Some items did not even have expiry date on them, and have to be discarded too. So please do not dump them at the Foodbank 🙏
I left the Foodbank happy that I might have helped someone down the road when they receive food packs from the Foodbank; and also made some friends along the way :-)
