The Frangipani Tree, Near Galle, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"Once upon a time, hippies came to Sri Lanka to tune in and drop out on its gorgeous golden shores. The beaches are as much of a draw as ever, but these days, hosts of hotels vie for attention with smart flatscreens and all sorts of fancy accoutrements. Not so here; at The Frangipani Tree you won't even find a TV in your room. The magic of this hotel is simply its setting - the raging waves of the Indian Ocean crash just meters from the Hawksbill, Leatherback and Olive Ridley suites - named after the turtles who head back to this beach every year to lay their eggs. The keen young team urge you to switch off your phone, kick off your shoes and pick up a book to lounge by the pool. If you need more activity you can do some laps or play a game of tennis, but basically, it's all about downtime. Add to this casual but tasty dining and beautifully spare interiors courtesy of Bawa protegé Channa Daswatte, and it's no surprise that tuning in and dropping out is fashionable once again. Highs The clean, minimalist lines and polished concrete show Geoffrey Bawa's influence, and make a refreshing change from Galle's heritage hotelsYou can see the world-famous stilt fishermen from the beach and spot sea turtles bobbing up and down in the seaThe perfect place to escape and relax - beautiful bathrooms and minimal techA long, thin pool; great for those who actually want to swim on holidayThroughout our stay, the friendly service from all the staff was excellent Lows Recent guest feedback has been well below the normal standard, citing poor service and maintenance; but the hotel assures us they are improving as they emerge from the covid and political troublesSome may find it a little pricey given the lack of mod cons, but for others, that's the attractionNo in-room fridges, but a cold drink will arrive rapidly if you order oneYou'll need to take a tuk-tuk if you want to dine out" - Kate Parsons

I had a wonderful stay at Edward Collection by Frangipani Tree. The hotel offers a serene and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a peaceful getaway. The rooms were beautifully designed, clean, and well-maintained, providing a comfortable stay. The overall ambiance was charming, with a perfect blend of nature and luxury. All the staff were very friendly. special mention to Thushare, who was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. His warm hospitality made our experience even more enjoyable. He went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, making us feel truly welcomed. Highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable stay! Will definitely return. The food was also fresh and so delicious.

A Charming Escape at The Frangipani Tree Stay: 21st – 22nd June From the moment we stepped onto the property, we felt embraced by a calm, coastal charm and sincere Sri Lankan hospitality. Our short stay at The Frangipani Tree was truly relaxing — a perfect little getaway for two. A special thank you to Sanjaya, the Property Manager, who embodies what true Sri Lankan hospitality is all about — warm, welcoming, and always attentive without being intrusive. We had initially made an error with our booking dates, and Himasha from Reservations went above and beyond to help us rebook seamlessly. It was handled with such grace and efficiency — a gesture we’re very grateful for. Also, a big thank you to Isuru and Pavan, whose genuine friendliness added a personal touch to our experience. And to the chefs — though we didn’t catch your names, the food was absolutely lovely. The property itself is clearly well cared for — from the manicured landscaping to the thoughtful details throughout the space, the whole team deserves credit for maintaining its tranquil appeal. A couple of notes for improvement: • The pricing of beverages felt disproportionately high compared to the overall value, which slightly took away from the experience. It’s something that might be worth reviewing for future guests. • The tennis court, while a great addition, has some algae build-up that can be slippery — a small maintenance point that could prevent potential mishaps. Overall, it was a memorable stay — peaceful, personal, and very well hosted. Thank you to the entire team for your kindness and care. — Evinda & Ushara

The frangipani tree hotel ||First impressions absolutely amazing. The hotel is clean and fresh. The road outside the hotel is completely bonkers and noisy but the frangipani tree hotel is an oasis of calm. You really cannot hear the road as the waves from the Indian Ocean muffle out any other noise ||We had an ocean view room there is only one word to describe the accommodation- incredible. The room is spacious with a small courtyard incorporating your shower and toilet facilities. It’s bright airy and lovely. Just so you know there are cockroaches in the toilet area as it’s outside. ||The staff cannot do enough for you on our first day they filled our mini fridge free of charge with soft drinks and gave us a bottle of wine. ||A special mention must be given to Thushara one of the staff. He was exceptional he simply couldn’t have done enough for us whether that was cleaning the room or getting us a tuk tuk to go into Galle he had everything in hand. He made our stay even more special ||Palinda appears to be the senior member of staff. He was again very attentive and helpful||Sanjeewa is the head waiter his English is very good and he leads the rest of the team. Very nice chap. ||Chathiya is the chef he was excellent. If you decide to eat in the hotel the food is really good and reasonably priced for a hotel. ||There are many staff in the background who don’t get any recognition. A general tip box which everyone could share would be very useful. ||When we stayed there were only two other rooms that were occupied. We were originally booked into a garden room but were upgraded to ocean view room it’s spectacular. ||Right the limitations. ||The beach sharply shelves you cannot swim in the sea it’s far too dangerous. When we booked the hotel Audley Travel assured us that the hotel and beach were exactly what we wanted a beach to lounge on and walk along. This is a misrepresentation the location of the hotel is opposite this description. ||The road outside the hotel is treacherous. It’s the A2 a main road. There are few places to walk to safely to eat outside the hotel. This limits where you can go on foot you can walk on the beach but there are limits to how far you can walk each way from the hotel due to rocks impeding your way. ||If you want to venture further away from the hotel there is Mirissa Beach which we thought was amazing. The Tuk Tuk takes about 40 minutes and costs about 7000 rupees. Be careful though as you have to barter the price. Mirissa beach is relatively safe beautiful waves (be careful they are powerful) it’s clean and the beach is lined with bars / cafe. We ate at the Lava restaurant the food was delicious. ||What you may want to know there is a conservation team working on the beach we saw at least 100 baby turtles being released. Wonderfully marshalled and so unexpected absolutely incredible. ||There is a bay about a kilometre away from the frangipani tree hotel going towards Galle. In that bay you can hand feed large turtles. The bay is completely open and not a conservation area but there are locals selling food for the turtles who ensure the 10 or so turtles are safe and unharmed. I couldn’t believe these wild animals were so tame they are literally taking food from your hand. Absolutely breathtaking. ||Would I stay at the Frangipani Tree Hotel again. NO. this has nothing to do with the hotel it’s just the position of the venue and the beach is very very limited

A small boutique hotel right on the beach in Talpe ( a shortish tuk tuk ride from Galle) . Excellent food and friendly staff. The hotel has a beautiful pool (the sea near the hotel is not really suitable for swimming although it does look wonderful). The hotel is on a main road, although you can't hear the traffic. Recommended.

We have stayed for 5 days, what a beautiful place to stay. Everything has been fantastic, the gardens are immaculately kept, great pool, the food is amazing, especially the choice of Sri Lankan or English breakfast. Try the egg hoppers or string hoppers with curry and dhal for breakfast. We stayed in the sea view rooms upstairs and the these are huge. |Nice empty beach outside as it’s difficult to get to without hotel access. 10 min walk from Dalawella beach where you can feed huge green turtles by hand. 5 mins by Tuk Tuk to Unawatuna and 15 from Galle. But the best thing about this place are the people who run it, they cannot do anymore to make you welcome and look after the guests. We love this place and great value 5 star living, great value verses western standards.

The perfect place to rest and relax. Stunning location right on the beach. Huge rooms with big beautiful beds and bathrooms. A great place to recharge after a day of visiting the streets of Unawatuna and Galle/Galle Fort. Wonderful service, lovely management! Special mention to Thuhara who was such a pleasure during our stay :). Thank you Frangipani Tree, a true 5-star hotel, we will be back!

Palinda and his crew were without fault. Amazing service and so friendly and polite. Fragipani Tree is a truly heavenly place with beautiful and immaculately kept grounds. It is fronted by a virtually private beach and a wonderfully warm sea. In all perfect.

When the sun shines, this place must be beautiful and an inviting place to chill. On grey rainy days (which was our experience) it feels less inviting. Mainly as the location is 20 minutes from Galle, and the long road in between is too busy to enjoy walking on. Plus the sea in front of the hotel becomes too rough to swim in. Having said that, the staff were the star of the show, friendly and helpful to ensure you have a good experience. Daily, the doorman greeted us with an umbrella and huge smile, the groundsman kept the pool and garden spotless, the dining team were accommodating, and housekeeping made us smile every day. The pool was usable in the rain. And we really grew to like the outside quirky bathroom.
