The Frangipani Tree, Near Galle, Sri Lanka - Explore & Book

"Once upon a time, hippies came to Sri Lanka to tune in and drop out on its gorgeous golden shores. The beaches are as much of a draw as ever, but these days, hosts of hotels vie for attention with smart flatscreens and all sorts of fancy accoutrements. Not so here; at The Frangipani Tree you won't even find a TV in your room. The magic of this hotel is simply its setting - the raging waves of the Indian Ocean crash just meters from the Hawksbill, Leatherback and Olive Ridley suites - named after the turtles who head back to this beach every year to lay their eggs. The keen young team urge you to switch off your phone, kick off your shoes and pick up a book to lounge by the pool. If you need more activity you can do some laps or play a game of tennis, but basically, it's all about downtime. Add to this casual but tasty dining and beautifully spare interiors courtesy of Bawa protegé Channa Daswatte, and it's no surprise that tuning in and dropping out is fashionable once again. Highs The clean, minimalist lines and polished concrete show Geoffrey Bawa's influence, and make a refreshing change from Galle's heritage hotelsYou can see the world-famous stilt fishermen from the beach and spot sea turtles bobbing up and down in the seaThe perfect place to escape and relax - beautiful bathrooms and minimal techA long, thin pool; great for those who actually want to swim on holidayThroughout our stay, the friendly service from all the staff was excellent Lows Recent guest feedback has been well below the normal standard, citing poor service and maintenance; but the hotel assures us they are improving as they emerge from the covid and political troublesSome may find it a little pricey given the lack of mod cons, but for others, that's the attractionNo in-room fridges, but a cold drink will arrive rapidly if you order oneYou'll need to take a tuk-tuk if you want to dine out" - Kate Parsons

My friends and I stayed at The Frangipani Tree recently and absolutely loved it! The villa is huge, with a big pool right in the centre and an amazing view of the ocean. I stayed in the “Hawksbill Two” room - it was spacious, comfortable, and featured an epic outdoor bathroom. For breakfast, we had string hoppers, followed by chicken curry and all sorts of delicious dishes cooked by the chef. Waking up in the morning to sea breezes and the sound of waves was just perfect for a relaxing holiday. What a wonderful stay!

We have just returned from an incredible 6-night stay at Frangipani Tree and could not recommend it highly enough. We had originally booked only 3 nights, but we loved it so much that we extended our stay!||From the moment we arrived—very late in the evening—the staff greeted us warmly and made us feel instantly welcome. No matter the hour, they were ready to prepare a delicious meal.||The location is stunning, the service is truly five-star, and the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing. The rooms are spacious, beautifully designed, and felt like a tranquil sanctuary away from the busyness. We loved starting each day with the lovely breakfast and spending time enjoying the beautiful surroundings—it was genuinely hard to leave.||It was also our daughter’s birthday during our stay, and Sangeewa & Thusara went above and beyond to make it special. They surprised her with a delicious cake, balloons, and so much kindness—she absolutely loved it!||A huge thank you to the wonderful kind staff , Sangeewa, Thusara, Pawan, Isura, Baragama, Dinesh & Kasun for making our stay unforgettable. We will definitely be back!

From the moment we arrived, The Frangipani Tree had a really warm, relaxed feel. We were greeted with necklaces featuring real frangipani flowers - such a thoughtful touch that set the tone for the stay. Our bedroom was huge, and I loved waking up to the sound of waves crashing just outside. The highlight for me was definitely soaking in the bathtub while listening to the ocean. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant and a few cocktails in the bar downstairs to finish off the evening. The beach out front is stunning, lined with palms, though the sea was a bit rough during our stay, so we spent more time swimming in the pool. Overall, it’s a beautiful spot to unwind and take in Sri Lanka’s coastal atmosphere: laid-back, stylish, and genuinely welcoming.

We chose Frangipani as one of our honeymoon destinations. And it was the BEST decision we ever made and we’ve been reaping the joys even after our trip ended. From day one, the staff were very attentive and caring. Staffs from service providers, room attendants, chefs, security guards and etc. They were polite, respectful and really helpful to meet all our needs. Really hospitality and always a pleasant smile to great us. It was truly a home away from home. The location and amenities are truly outstanding and puts value for the price. Can’t wait to return!

A Slice of Seaside Serenity at The Frangipani Tree, Talpe 🌊🌴 What a truly relaxing and memorable stay by the oceanfront in Thalpe. This boutique gem offered the perfect blend of tranquility, elegance, and warm Sri Lankan hospitality. Every meal was a celebration of flavour — from the beautifully presented breakfast to a dinner we won’t soon forget. The seafood platter was a highlight, with a delicious local twist — creamy garlic and fiery kochchi sauces that brought the taste of the island to life. 🌶🦐 The setting, the service, the sea breeze — everything was just right. A place where time slows down and every detail feels thoughtful. 🌺✨ Already dreaming of coming back. Thank you Sanjaya & the team !! 📍 The Frangipani Tree by Edwards Collection, Talpe, Sri Lanka

A Charming Escape at The Frangipani Tree Stay: 21st – 22nd June From the moment we stepped onto the property, we felt embraced by a calm, coastal charm and sincere Sri Lankan hospitality. Our short stay at The Frangipani Tree was truly relaxing — a perfect little getaway for two. A special thank you to Sanjaya, the Property Manager, who embodies what true Sri Lankan hospitality is all about — warm, welcoming, and always attentive without being intrusive. We had initially made an error with our booking dates, and Himasha from Reservations went above and beyond to help us rebook seamlessly. It was handled with such grace and efficiency — a gesture we’re very grateful for. Also, a big thank you to Isuru and Pavan, whose genuine friendliness added a personal touch to our experience. And to the chefs — though we didn’t catch your names, the food was absolutely lovely. The property itself is clearly well cared for — from the manicured landscaping to the thoughtful details throughout the space, the whole team deserves credit for maintaining its tranquil appeal. A couple of notes for improvement: • The pricing of beverages felt disproportionately high compared to the overall value, which slightly took away from the experience. It’s something that might be worth reviewing for future guests. • The tennis court, while a great addition, has some algae build-up that can be slippery — a small maintenance point that could prevent potential mishaps. Overall, it was a memorable stay — peaceful, personal, and very well hosted. Thank you to the entire team for your kindness and care. — Evinda & Ushara

When the sun shines, this place must be beautiful and an inviting place to chill. On grey rainy days (which was our experience) it feels less inviting. Mainly as the location is 20 minutes from Galle, and the long road in between is too busy to enjoy walking on. Plus the sea in front of the hotel becomes too rough to swim in. Having said that, the staff were the star of the show, friendly and helpful to ensure you have a good experience. Daily, the doorman greeted us with an umbrella and huge smile, the groundsman kept the pool and garden spotless, the dining team were accommodating, and housekeeping made us smile every day. The pool was usable in the rain. And we really grew to like the outside quirky bathroom.
