Le Bastard is a breath of fresh air in the Paris bakery scene, bold, inventive, and utterly delicious. With airy croissants and next-level pains au chocolat, inventive cruffins, babkas, and seasonal treats, every item is a feast for the senses. Their breads, like the tri‑flour bâtard and nut‑studded loaves, are artisanal and hearty, crafted with organic flours and natural starters.

⸻ I recently visited Boulangerie French Bastard on 61 Rue Oberkampf in Paris, and I have to say, it was an incredible experience from start to finish. This place is not your average bakery—it’s a modern, innovative take on French pastry-making, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The Food I decided to try their charcoal brioche sandwich, which immediately caught my eye. At first, I was intrigued by the dark color of the brioche—it’s not something you see every day! But from the first bite, I was hooked. The brioche was incredibly soft, with a slight crispiness on the outside that gave it a wonderful texture. It had a subtle smoky depth that complemented the filling beautifully. The ingredients inside were fresh and well-balanced, making every bite flavorful and satisfying. It was a unique twist on a classic sandwich, and I would definitely order it again. For dessert, I went with their citron pastry, and I can confidently say it was one of the best citrus desserts I’ve ever had. The moment I took a bite, I was impressed by the perfect balance of flavors. The lemony tang was vibrant and refreshing, yet not overpowering. It had just the right amount of sweetness to create harmony between the tartness and the creaminess of the dessert. The texture was smooth, light, and airy, melting in my mouth with every bite. It was the kind of dessert that makes you pause and savor every moment. The Atmosphere & Service Beyond the amazing food, what really made my visit special was the atmosphere and the service. The bakery itself has a stylish, modern design that feels inviting and comfortable. It’s the perfect spot to grab a pastry and a coffee, whether you want to sit down and enjoy the moment or take it to go. One thing that truly stood out was the friendliness of the staff. The lady working there was incredibly warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. She was patient, helpful, and genuinely kind—something that makes a big difference when visiting a new place. It’s always a pleasure to be served by people who love what they do and take pride in their work. Final Thoughts If you’re in Paris and looking for a bakery that offers something beyond the usual croissants and baguettes, Boulangerie French Bastard is the place to go. They take traditional French baking and give it a creative, modern twist, resulting in truly unique and delicious pastries. The charcoal brioche sandwich was a one-of-a-kind experience, and the citron dessert was absolutely divine. On top of that, the service was excellent, making my visit even more enjoyable. Whether you’re a pastry lover, a foodie, or just someone who appreciates great flavors, this bakery is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their creations! ⸻

When you’re in Paris, the last place you wanna go is somewhere with an English name so I was a bit hesitant on going in but I’m so glad I did! I got the sun dried tomato pastry and it was sooooo good. Every bite had sun dried tomato, on the outside or stuffed inside. We also got a tarte which my boyfriend loved. It was a bit rich and sweet for me but the crust was really lovely. There’s so many options; you just need to come by and check it out!

Google
food was absolutely amazing, we came a little late so unfortunately didn’t get a hot drink but the lady behind the counter gave us two free items which were also delicious! staff are really friendly, would highly recommend their cruffin

Would Return. Recommended. I really like this chain of bakeries; high quality, huge variety and reasonable prices. Croissant - definitely not their strong suit, not preferred by me. Very doughy, light in butter, not crisp or flaky. Lamination is weak and you can see there's not many layers. Eclair - delicious. Strong chocolate, light cream, not overly sweet. Some seating at this location, recommended.

Yelp
Amazing pastries not too far from le meridien etoile and the Hyatt regency near palais du congress. The original croissant, pain Au chocolates and the babka pistache were all incredible. We visited this pastry shop twice since it was so good on this trip.

Yelp
There are 5 locations in Paris and quality is not equal across locations. I visited the Oberkampf one evening to find shelves nearly bare with no baguettes. The tarte de pomme was barely edible after a night in the fridge. The aubergine veggie sandwich was too sour. I loved the pain de suisse and croissants. The fried chicken sandwich was pretty good for the price. Staff is friendly but there is only so much they can do with no inventory.

Yelp
This is a review for the location in Marias (5 Rue du Temple) near Hotel de Ville. We came here twice a day for four days while staying in Paris to the point we knew all the staff and tried almost every pastry. We absolutely LOVED this place. Service is great, rarely a line but even so it goes fast. FYI: the inside is small so everything is to-go. Every morning we grabbed morning pastries. We particularly loved the croissants, Kouign-amann, rose brioche, sucre cruffin, and pistachio babka. The flan, lemon meringue, chocolate pear tart were also very good. Then we came back late morning/afternoon and they bring out more savory stuff like sandwiches. The burrata sun-dried tomato pesto sandwich IS SO GOOD. I also tried the chicken salad bagel sandwich and that hit the spot. The bagel is not dense like American bagels, it is perfect, not soggy, and the lettuce was fresh. The savory bread rolls are fine, but I preferred the sandwiches over those. Then in the late afternoon/early evening we would often pick up a baguette and then stop by a nearby market for some cheese and wine. If you stop by too late the baguettes get a little stale (understandable because they don't keep baking them late into the evening!) but it was still more than adequate for our purposes. Coffee here is average, convenient to have in the mornings. The star of the show here is definitely the pastries and sandwiches.

Yelp
My first croissant in Paris and it did NOT disappoint!!! Let me rave about this croissant. Soo many options to choose from but I got a plain one for under €2. I swear life got a little brighter after I tried it. The croissant was buttery, flaky, chewy, and soul filling. And like a local, I had to dip it into my cappuccino. If I lived here, I would probably be a regular. A tragedy that I was not able to try the other pastries. Forever a dream in my head.

Yelp
Came here after searching for the best croissants. I wasn't disappointed!!!! We got a butter croissant, cinnamon roll, babka pistachio, and orange juice. All of it was SUPER DELICIOUS. Going to go back again to try the sandwiches too! There wasn't too long of a line. Service was prompt. Really cute cafe. Could sit outside if you want. We wanted to eat while we walked to the Louvre.

Yelp
There's hype for this place and it's well deserved. I came at 6pm and there was no line and a lot of stock left. Loves: + The chocolate cruffin (3.90e) is so worth the hype. The chocolate ganache is an amazing touch and adds sweetness to the more muted cruffin. There is a plain sugar one too but if it's your first time, get the chocolate. + Beyond the popular cruffins there are so many other pastries to choose from! + Cute shop but it's really for going in and out. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for another cruffin. Hell yeah.

Yelp
Wasn't in here long enough to truly get a good look at all the yum. I honestly don't even remember what my pastry was called but it gave off cronut vibes and boy was it good. Cinnamon and sugar and flaky... I grabbed it on the go because we were catching a bus, but I would've loved to have more time. They were quick here because they had no wait. It was hot, though... so not like you want to stand around in there anyway.

Yelp
Lovely quaint boulangerie et patisserie in Paris. Everything was excellent from the convenient location, service, decor, coffee and amazing cruffin. They had an assortment of breads and pastries. The cruffin was hands down the best I have ever had. The coffee was great too. Definitely worth the walk from my hotel. I did not see a lot of seating inside so great to takeaway.

Yelp
Croissants were really good cool little vibes in cafe. One problem was the blonde cashier she was rushing us and was not very friendly, I didn't even get a chance to look at everything(no line). Service plays a big part with me if you're not friendly I won't go back

Yelp
Loved their croissant and would come back for that. I had high hopes for their pain suisse but it was not that good. I'll stick to Utopie for that. There sandwiches looked good though so maybe next time I'll try one.

Yelp
Sometimes I fantasize about being tucked into the warm, fluffy, buttery layers of a croissant and just drifting off into a peaceful slumber. That's normal, right? Even if it's not, you'll understand after your first bite of a croissant from The French Bastards. The croissant is so light and flaky with such a delightfully buttery flavor; I could've just eaten these and no other foods in Paris and been perfectly content. Only reason TFB gets a ding is because I also had the pain tradition and it was very middling. The pastries all looked very good too though.

Yelp
I wish I could give this shop 100 stars. I absolutely loved their pastries. I stopped by here just about every other day during my trip to Paris. I couldn't get enough. Although I'm not an eclair fan their eclairs have great textures and flavors. The shop is small and the staff helpful. Wish I had this place back home.

Yelp
Friendly service, flaky croissants! I started to speak French & they picked up that I was from the US and spoke English too. I need to practice my French though!

Yelp
I stopped at this busy bakery because it was near my destination, had a cheeky name and was highly rated by David Liebowitz (who is a delight BTW). It was lunch time and there was a mighty line - I probably should have grabbed one of their enormous sandwiches, served on brioche but I wasn't "that hungry". I opted for a pain au chocolat and it was fine - a little dry. I've had worse, and I've had a lot better. Get a sandwich.

Yelp
Love. Croissant and chocolate eclair were delicious. Service was friendly and quick. Definitely recommend while in Paris.

Yelp
The service was amazing, employees were really friendly and gave recommendations and helped us order a combo meal. The sandwiches were delicious and the chocolate desserts were good and sooo filling - we could not finish. The cafe has a great vibe and is a great stop for a meal or a snack.

Yelp
We come here and this place never disappoint, everything we got from this place was delicious, I will recommend this place to all my family and friends, and my client. One of my lost to try in Paris..

Yelp
i visited the french bastards three times during my 3 day trip to paris! they have a wide assortment of really delicious looking pastries for an affordable price! each time i visited, the employees were very friendly. there's a few indoor stools and a bench as well as a few outside tables. sometimes there is a queue but it goes very fast! // chocolate cruffin // my favorite item i got! it was a light flakey chocolate pastry with very dense rich chocolate paste as a filling. yum! // chocolate pistachio roll // this roll was good, it tasted like chocolate and was light. it looks very beautiful with the green pistachio, though i wish it had more pistachio flavor in addition to the sprinkled pistachio garnish. // chocolate eclair // this eclair was chocolatey and had a dense chocolate cream filling that was more like mousse or thick chocolate paste than cream or custard (if that is what you are expecting)

Christopher T.

Yelp
Best financier I've ever had! We stopped in every morning for coffee and pastries and became addicted.

Yelp
Fantastic -- of the 15+ different croissants I've tried during my vacations in Paris this one is tops -- tried it three different occasions and each time it's been perfectly flaky, not a bit dry and not a bit chewy. Outstanding. The other baked goods are similarly good though I've not tried the charcoal bread yet (hopefully one day soon).

Yelp
I had a super pleasant experience at this corner bakery. There was a large selection of pastries and each day I tried a different one and my personal favorite was the Pain Suisse, which was flaky with a cream and chocolate filling. Their pastries are not too sweet that I'm used to in the U.S. The staff was the most friendly I've ever met and they took the time to describe the ingredients of each pastry and provided insight to the origin of its storefront name. Their chocolate chaud or hot chocolate was extraordinary and the staff meticulously made sure that it had the right amount of milk and chocolate portion for me. I looked forward to having breakfast each day during my stay in Paris that was next to it. Highly recommended to all! Merci.

Yelp
Walked by this establishment the other day on my first intro to the Oberkampf section of Paris just up the street from my hotel. The name certainly caught my attention as did the three handsome founding bakers. They were all three throwing dough around. Visited two days later in the rain to get a 'picnic' lunch to eat in my room. Bought a delicious jambon/fromage/arugula baguette and an apple/pistachio tart. They made up a beautiful meal for a dreary day. The selection of breads and pastries is amazing!

Yelp
Who knew something as simple as a baguette would bring you so much joy? This place is awesome. The service is also great. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Great pastry shop owned by cool people making creative twists on the original breads & pastries. While it's been on my list to try since they opened in January I only had a chance to go last night. Sold out of their croissants I tried the traditional baguette which was solid in every great baguette way. Raisin, Honey, & Turmeric loaf - Love at first bite Charcoal & Sesame country loaf -unusual & creative but not my favorite Solid croissants and beautiful pastries Worth a visit

Yelp
Outstanding selection of baked goods and sandwiches. Their brioche is exceptional and the pain at chocolate are as good or better than any I've had in France. Service is fast and friendly.

Yelp
If you wanna visit a pretty good French bakery then this is the spot. The sweets were so good that I had come back just to keep trying all they had to offer. Overall an awesome spot!

Yelp
Hands down the best croissants I've ever had. The cinnamon rolls are brilliant too. Plus everyone who works there is super friendly. I think I came here three times in 4 days.
