I was fortunate enough to find myself in Franschhoek, which translates to "French Corner." I decided to dine at a French restaurant that has been in business for the past 24 years.
On the specials board, they listed mussels, but just as my waiter asked what I’d like for starters, another server updated the board to read "sold out." Well, that just meant the mussels were popular that evening. Instead, I opted for the prawn tempura. It was light, unlike the greasy tempura you often find at Chinese restaurants, and the sauce was intriguing.
For my main course, I chose the veal schnitzel, one of their original dishes, to discover why it’s a menu staple. Now I understand—it’s a flavor from another dimension, neither distinctly red meat nor chicken.
For dessert, I indulged in Belgian chocolates paired with a smooth 10-year-old KWV brandy.
The restaurant supports an academy that helps children and is a celebrity hotspot, having hosted the likes of Bono, Faf du Klerk, and Bryan Habana. The staff is exceptionally well-trained.
As always, it’s about expectations, and this highly regarded establishment met mine. I left that night thoroughly satisfied. Well done. 4.5/5.
