The French Goat

The endive salad was great - anytime I see a salad with white anchovies I I have to have it! The endive was crisp and delicate. The escargot were good, served with gluten-free bread to accommodate me. My server Michael also brought me some gluten-free bread with the house butter, which if I remember correctly was a whipped honey butter with black sesame seeds and black lava salt. For my entree I had the steak (medium rare) and frites. The steak was so good that when I returned to my B&B I finished my leftovers. There was a generous helping of truffle fries which were decent as fries go but I couldn't pick up on much truffle. The ambiance of the restaurant is candle-lit and romantic - a wonderful place for an anniversary or other special occasion. I felt underdressed in jeans and a blouse but was welcomed anyway. My server was very friendly and checked on me often.

My girlfriends and I went to this place to have Brunch. It was my first time there and I absolutely recommend it. The plates are made with fresh ingredients and they personal is very kind. Just to give you some heads up, if you want to do Brunch on Sundays you have to make reservations in advance. I don’t know if you have to make reservations for the rest of the week but for Brunch on Sunday you absolutely have to! I’m definitely coming back ✅

This place was an incredible find! We were staying at the greenbrier resort and chose to dine here on our last night in town. Our server Inigo was very thorough and took very good care of us. His wine recommendations were on point. The atmosphere is quaint and cosy. Must haves are the French onion soup, duck leg confit, and tuna tartare. We literally ordered all of the deserts and shared. The chocolate mousse is out of this world! I highly recommend and will return the next time we are in town.

My husband and I were so blown away by this sweet restaurant in the quaint town of Lewisburg, WV. We had no idea what to expect. Our food was excellently prepared! Every dish was thoughtfully arranged and outstanding. I ordered the Salmon that was brought back on the menu by popular demand and I'm so glad it was! I enjoyed every component including the braised fennel. I want to mention, the food was the proper temperature which seems to be a rare feat these days. We enjoyed it so much and have a few things we would like to try, so we will be back tomorrow evening for Round 2!

In a small West Virginia town I discovered the French Goat . I had a world class dining experience in a surprisingly place . The restaurant is in a beautiful former home . Decorated beautifully in keeping with the historic home in a historic district . I had Sunday brunch . Eggs Florentine and a bread basket . Delicious !! That's what I can say . Delicious . Our servers were topnotch . One took me on a tour of the eclectic art pieces on the walls , much of it by Appalachian artists .

We were promptly seated despite no reservation just before the Friday night crowd arrived. The building is an older home nicely decorated with seating in the front rooms. The cheerful host answered our questions about the restaurant. Our server was the best! Lively, outgoing with super attention to all the patrons in our area. The pan seared salmon was delicious but the mango gelato was fantastic!

The restaurant makes a strong first impression: a round mahogany table adorned with beautiful flowers welcomes you at the entrance, and our waiter—from Stoke Newington, London—had charm and personality to match the setting. The menu was explained in detail, and our order was taken with apparent care. Unfortunately, it was then partially forgotten, and what did arrive left much to be desired. The oysters were small, tired, and bland. The steak lacked a proper sear, seasoning, and flavour, and the duck confit tasted as though it had been prepared days earlier. In the end, this was a perfect example of a place that talks the talk but cannot walk the walk.

One of the best meals I've ever had! The server was also top notch. My girlfriend had the mahi mahi special and I had the tomato risotto. Both were prepared well and served elegantly. We may make a trip back to the area solely to eat here!

A lovely dinning experience with my daughter for our last night on our mother daughter trip. The restaurant is housed in an old home in downtown with strret and lot parking very close. Lovely outdor seating area on the porch but we opted for indoor seating in one of the 3 or 4 intimate rooms. Service was great, our waiter very griendly, attenticw and helpful with suggestions, recommendations and specials. After ordering we were each served a couole of pieces of fresh bread with a black and white sea salt. Bread and butter were very good. We had the roasted red pepper and walnut dip served with local crackers and artisan bread. It too was excellent, so tasty. We had a fush of the day, a mild white fish served with new potatoes and green bwans. The fish was tender and light. I opted fir the french onion soup that was such a large crock og soup i had to take over half of it to go. It was steaming hot, toasted cheese on top was wonderful, onions the right crispness and flavorful. I did alsi have the glazed asparagus and fondant potatoes. Asparagus was crisp and lightly seasoned but the fondant potatoes wete nothing special. We had a chocolate mouse fir dessert. I am not a big fan so not my favorite. Expect to pay a bit for the atmosphere and special touches but it was worth it for the good food, great service and memories.

Everything was perfect from the waitstaff, to cuisine, to ambiance! I wish I had gotten more photos because the plating was beautiful.

Adorable decor. Our server was lovely and personable. We ordered the Salmon, The Goat Burger and the Chicken. To me personally I thought the food was average but over priced. Wouldn't go back because I didn't find it to be memorable.

This place doesn't disappoint. My partner and I visited this spot once before and loved everything. I had the halibut which was fantastic and so fresh. We recently returned with the grandparents and our kids and they couldn't have been any more welcoming. This is a fancy restaurant but everyone is so warm and welcoming. They even provided our kids with crayons and paper. This time, I ordered the mahi mahi which was fantastic. Our daughter had the French onion soup while my son ate every last piece of the grilled cheese. We stayed at The Greenbrier Resort, but this is a classy spot and way better than any restaurant we'd find there! Everyone loved it and we'll be back!

We recently had dinner here while staying at The Greenbrier. We ordered the Duck Confit, the Roasted Chicken Breast, and the French Goat Burger. The service was exemplary and they had a nice special on bottles of wine that evening. The French Goat is a great alternative to the Greenbrier Main Dining Room for those looking to venture off of those hallowed grounds.

Service and ambience were a top-notch. I know It's a fancy place but the burger is amazing. The fish dish was dried out.

First rule of dining out: The smaller the portions and the harder it is to pronounce, the more it costs. It was exactly what we expected in this regard, too, so I am not complaining. Besides, when you celebrate your wife's birthday, it is not so much what you buy for her, but what you spend on her. At the French Goat I bought her excellent flavors and textures and a tiny beef filet. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Definitely the best restaurant in Southern WV with great system for reservations and really impressive staff and ownership / chefs. I come here to celebrate all things Southern WV and also the ambiance is off the hook. The food and soups in particular, are also off the hook.

The meal at this restaurant was not the best we had. Although two of our group of 5, loved their meal, my brothers and my meal werent great We are from out of town and had high expectations. Even the friend we were staying with, who lives in Lewisburg, said that her filet mignon was not like it was when she had it before - not nearly as good. I had the duck which was a bit dry Our salad lacked dressing with any flavor Service and atmosphere were great We just had a much better meal and experience at General Lewis's And to add on to the owners response ... the owner has a big ego that shows obviously the customer is always wrong What a jerk! No apologies. Just defense. That shows a lot about the poor customer service given here!!

Outstanding! Beautiful from the outside and throughout the entire restaurant. Our server was professional as well as witty and knowledgeable. Great food and wine selection.

Just .... perfect. No other word for it. Personable and approachable staff bringing you elegant and beautifully prepared dishes. Ok - not *entirely* perfect. My side salad was legitimately ho-hum, but I'd forgotten about that because of the rest of the meal.

An excellent restaurant in a beautiful old home. The service is first class and so is the food. We have been there for dinner several times. Loved it. We recently tried it for brunch and were blown away. Not cheap, but worth the price.

Lovely hidden gem nestled in a small town in West Virginia. It's really elevated fine dining and a pleasant place to stumble upon on our trip. The service matched the high quality of the food, so I would recommend to those who are curious to try it.

We have a new found love for French food. It's a beautifully decorated restaurant, and all of the staff are friendly and helpful. Don't miss out on the French onion soup, it's the best I ever had. His burger was cooked perfectly, and my mushroom risotto was seasoned nicely and very tasty! Great overall experience! Definitely try it if you get the chance!

Outstanding French Restaurant in charming Lewisburg! Skilful British bartender, Indigo recommended his version of the Gibson Martini. A large selection of wines are available. Mussels, Oysters, escargot, Arctic Char, & French Onion soup were superb. Finished off with chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, & cookies. Best restaurant in Lewisburg!

So pleased with my meal here! I enjoyed the oysters on half shell, escargot, chicken liver mousse, and my favorite; jumbo lump crabmeat Zucchini & Potato Rosti. Each dish was beautifully plated and presented by a lovely waitstaff. Enjoyed the stylish French decor.

My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary and the Fourth of July at The French Goat. Two nights in a row, not a difficult assignment, when dining there. We had back to back outstanding experiences. The new menu items we enjoyed ( tomato heirloom salad, strawberry cream with meringue dessert ) are not to be missed as well as the best cheeseburger I've had in quite a while ! And then, there are the lovely people Who make it all possible in a truly charming setting. Anyone coming to Lewisburg should have " The Goat" on their agenda. They have a great bar and bartender Sean who knocks it out of the park. Actually, they all knock it out of the park there .

Great service, nice ambiance but I didn't like the food. Salad didn't have enough dressing, fillet and fries were way too salty. Dessert menu uninspired. Couldn't compare to our meal at the GENERAL LEWIS HOTEL.

ETA: Reading the responses to other reviews on here has been enlightening and sad. It appears we weren't the first to have problems with the way what was meant to be constructive criticism is received. The food was very good and the chef should receive highest compliments. If I was rating only on food, there'd have to be a higher star rating than five. That said, the customer service was largely awful. The individual who seated us (who was later revealed to be the owner) told us when we asked for seating by the fountain "That's not going to happen" in a very nasty tone of voice. A little taken aback, I figured they were either short staffed or the space was booked and shrugged it off. We were seated outdoors on the porch and brought water by the assistant. After a few minutes, we received menus and the waiter gave us the specials. We ordered drinks and food (through about three separate transactions). All but one item that arrived was brought out by someone other than the waiter, who also never checked back in with us after taking the last food order despite walking past us multiple times to chat and tend to the table past us. Since we were largely tended by one of the helpers, we tipped him cash before we got our check since we felt he'd given the best service. We waited about ten minutes before the waiter came by and said he would get the desert menu. Another ten or so minutes of him going in and out dealing with closing other tables before he brought the dessert menu. At this point we were pretty frustrated, but continue to wait. Finally, after agreeing we really weren't in the mood for desserts anymore I went in and asked for a split check. Which we were told they can't do by food item. I looked over our bill and it was roughly an even split anyway, so we agreed to a 50-50 split. We marked on the checks when we signed that we'd left a cash tip and left a few dollars for the regular server and headed out. About ten minutes later we received a call from a man from the restaurant (1030pm at this point) He wanted to know if there was anything wrong with the order. I told him the food was amazing ("good, good") and that we'd received excellent service from the gentleman with the water, who we had tipped cash before leaving. He told me that it was that man's first day and I responded that he had done an excellent job and I was very impressed. He said that it was custom to tip 20% to the waiter. I said that since we had received the most service from the other man, we chose to tip him. He was obviously irate at this point and asked if there was anything else wrong with the visit. I told him about the manager who greeted us and the bad tone and feeling it set. He exploded. He informed that was HIM and that he is the OWNER. That we should NEVER COME BACK. No worries friend. We won't.

Delicious dinner here tonight. I highly recommend the pistachio crusted halibut. My wife had the filet and it was cooked to perfection. The oysters were some of the best I've had at a restaurant. Friendly, excellent service in a beautiful old home. Our table was in a quiet corner which was nice for conversation. The desserts were delicious. Will definitely visit again the next time we are in town!

My experiences here have been pretty mediocre unfortunately. Last time I was here, a few weeks ago, we had a reservation at 5pm. We arrived at maybe 4:58; the waiting room to be seated is inside, so we came inside (the door was unlocked obviously). I guess they were still have a staff meeting to prep for the night because there was a group of at least 10 staff crowded into the bar area in the back of the restaurant, and no one was wearing masks. One of the women in the group approached us and was quite rude about us having walked in, as if we were early and shouldn't have come in. (I mean... the door was open and it was 5... like we're not early, and if you weren't ready for guests the door should have been locked) In any case, she sat us & our waitress came over. Our waitress (Julia I believe) was delightful and very helpful. I ordered the duck confit, the French onion soup, and the chocolate mousse. The duck wasn't quite as moist as I would have liked, but the rest was delicious. Last time I came here, I got the chicken & my winter vegetables were undercooked (zucchini and squash was crunchy). I expected more from this place!

Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Great service, classic French cuisine. All around worth the money.

A fine dining gem in wv. Forget going to prime 44 or any other greenbrier restaurant. Go here pay a quarter of the price and enjoy. Ambiance is great, service impeccable and the food is second to none. Duck confit was the best I've ever had in the states or France. Wine was a phenomenal cotes du Rhône. If you're in lewisburg it's a must. Cheers

Absolutely Devine! Having spent the weekend at The Greenbrier Resort, we ventured off the property to seek the local fare. The French Goat popped up as a suggestion . What an absolute gastronomic treasure and delight! Leah, our waitress, was skilled, attentive and fully versed in the menu and our interest to experience their specialties. We thoroughly enjoyed every moment. A gem. A must!

I have never been disappointed by the French Goat. My most recent trip was for my birthday, first weekend of November, with my husband. We decided to order small plates and sides as a tapas style meal. The oysters were beautifully fresh. We ordered 12 and were gifted another 6. Our waiter was patient and accommodating (I should've written his name down!) and very knowledgeable about the menu. We went with their Wolfe dry reisling, which is lovely and aromatic but not sweet. I'd had it before and knew I loved it already. I cannot more strongly recommend the special mushroom foie Gras soup, if it's ever on when you're there. We chose 2 desserts and split them. I had coffee with dessert and it was wonderfully strong, French press at the table so very fresh. Nothing was bad. Eat away!

The food was overpriced and under sized with not a lot of flavor... The filet was small (around 4 ounces) and came with a side a of "truffle" fries that had an unusual flavor. The brown sauce covering the steak was bland as well. The hamburger was a wet mess with a slab of ham (advertised as pork belly) and way too many wet ingredients. Due to the excessive condiments the burger was difficult to eat and the taste of the actual hamburger patty disappeared in the goo. The escargot was flavorless. No garlic flavor at all. Just not a good flavor. The onion soup was the best part of the meal. The service was ok but the ambiance was terrible. We were seated in the entryway at a strange little table that sat in the hallway that connected the dining rooms together. Every time someone came into the restaurant we were seated right in front of them staring in their direction. This table should never exist in any restaurant. It is disrespectful to put your patrons on display in a brightly lit hallway. Not a good experience.

We were underdressed, but treated the same as any guest. Food was incredible. Oysters very fresh. Service was friendly and attentive. Thank you for an delicious meal!

Sooo good we went back two nights in a row! Every single aspect from the moment you step in is superb! They made us feel so special...especially on our second night where we were sat a semi-private outdoor table and were blown away! Must have the foie gras with Sauternes...and pretty much everything else!

Fabulous meal and experience at this upscale, delightful restaurant ! Everything from the bartender and his delicious cocktails to the appetizers and entrees was first rate. Service was prompt, friendly, professional. This is a 10 on a 10 scale restaurant experience.

Genna and I had and amazing dinner tonight at the French Goat in Lewisburg.. the Faust Cabernet Sauvignon was incredible / smooth / easy on the tongue and the flavor profiles that changed with different food options was incredible.. the wine at first ( before any food ) was still an incredible Cabernet, but as bread / soup / and steak came to the table the favor profiles that opened up through the wine was almost magical. We ordered an appetizer with a house goat cheese and home made baguette, the blend of flavors achieved through the house made goat cheese was incredible. Next was the soup, a homemade soup of the day prepared from the chef directly.. it was to die for, I cannot remember exactly the name, but Genna and I both enjoyed every single bite For my entree, I ordered a Filet Mignon with a side of fresh scallops, homemade whipped mashed potatoes, and asparagus... The filet was buttery and silky smooth.. the type of filet you could cut with a dull butter knife.. it was excellent. I also chose an option of a homemade butter of the night which was infused with an assortment of ingredients that blended with the filet excellently. The French Goat in Lewisburg is a quaint diner with a modern take on exclusive French entrees and can be enjoyed by many. The outdoor seating was beautiful and quite. The candle on the table spoke the words of a romantic evening for a gettaway or the lyrics of a poem long forgotten brought back from a dining setting to not soon forget. The French Goat in Lewisburg, West Virginia is a must stop in dine waiting to bring out the foodie in all of us! Enjoy!

My wife and I went here today to celebrate her birthday. I expected the meal to be good but it exceeded our expectations in every way: I just got back from a trip to Europe and this place gives anywhere I ate on that continent a run for its money. Great atmosphere, excellent service, and amazing food. We will definitely be back.

Food 7 + ambiance 7 + value 6 + service 8 = overall 6.9 /10 (good) The sirloin steak was the star of my brunch experience at the French Goat. Great quality of meat, perfectly cooked to my medium-rare specifications, sliced perfectly for my convenience, and my steak knife worked great. Hey, it's the little things. Also, my partner's classic vanilla crème brûlée dessert was light and delicious. I really enjoyed the decor at the French Goat. The small rooms (of a one-time home, I suppose) felt a little luxe, and comfortable and spacious. Gilt mirrors, bit of velvet. Natural light. Nice art. Everything simple and balanced, nothing cluttered or cramped. Server was good. Owner very pleasant, checking up on things. Also nice: * White table cloths, with white paper toppers (not common in this area) * Spacious armchairs with short arms that don't trap you at the table * Friendly neighboring diner greeted us sweetly as we sat down. Dings. The hollandaise sauce on my steak was hard to taste over the salt used for the (I'll say it again, delicious) meat's crispy sear. My poached eggs swam in a bit of water, which possibly was condensation. The potato hash was fine, but I will not remember it in two days. My onion soup starter was so hot. The bread was disintegrated, the cheese thin, and I couldn't stay on pace with my fellow diners. I did not like my chocolate mousse dessert. It was a firm thing, rich, and too much of it. But I am particularly particular about my sweets, was warned, and you might like it. Also problematic: * A fellow diner loudly denouncing Indigenous Peoples' Day and sharing her related ignorance. (Though, loudly only because one of her dining companions was hard of hearing.) * Chairs too low for tabletops. Also too low for people with bad knees

Ate here several years ago and we were blown away. Last night....not so much! My wife called to change our reservation from four people to two, several weeks before our trip. When we arrived the owner basically called her a liar, suggesting that " we would have it in the system if you had called". The menus was far less that in previous years, focused more on creative writing than quality options. To sum up: Average food and the owner is a dick.

The French Goat is the prettiest restaurant I have eaten at in the last year. A gorgeous little cottage, that from the outside looks tiny, but inside has at least three spacious dining rooms done in pale yellow with blue accents and loads of mirrors. There is a romantic outside seating area with a fountain as well. The hosts and servers are extremely friendly and welcoming. Definitely gave us the right amount of attention throughout the meal with regular checking but not being obtrusive. I gave my bariatric spiel to the waiter so they don't get concerned when I sit there not eating, or eating verrrrry slowly. Tonight I ended up being not that hungry, so I am glad I gave the heads up. We ordered drinks to start, and the Colonel had a delicious concoction with bourbon ginger ale, and lavender sugar. I stuck to water this time, and the Sprossling had Sprite. They brought some delicious warm crusty bread with butter sprinkled with lava salt. Perfection! We skipped appetizers, and went straight to entrees: I ordered the steak frites with truffle fries, medium rare. The colonel ordered the Diver Scallops with potatoes dauphinoise, and the Sprossling had salmon, with I believe new potatoes (I know one was purple!) I did not taste the other meals, but my steak was perfectly done and very tender. The fries were great, reminding me how much I love truffle fries. These were especially good as they had used a light touch. The Colonel said his scallops were good, not amazing, but he loved his potatoes. He voted my steak the best and he tried everything. The Sprossling cleaned his plate, so I assume he liked the salmon. We had grilled asparagus as our side, and Sprossling also had some. The verdict was that it was good fresh baby asparagus, with a nice grilled taste maybe cooked a touch overlong, however delicious dipped in the bearnaise. The men had dessert, a very generous two scoops of pistachio ice cream with whipped cream for Sprossling, and a "shallow" Creme brûlée with lavender and caviar for the Colonel. We asked and much of the food is local, including the steak. I would say, maybe when in cattle country, skip the seafood and focus on something that can walk itself onto your plate. A very nice meal, would definitely return.

Get the French Goat Burger, it is the best burger I have ever had in my life and I have eaten burgers all around the world, even in France haha. The service here is amazing and they have daily specials they will go thru with you at your table. The restaurant is in an older house that is very quaint just like Lewisburg! Do yourself a favor and go to the French Goat all the food is delicious and the staff is amazing!!

Oh my! Had a wonderful experience here in the 4th of July. From the moment we stepped into the quaint historic home/restaurant we knew it was going to be awesome. The host greeted us promptly (we did have reservations), our service was exceptionally (server, drink & food runners too). The richness of the decor paired with delicious food and drink is a winning combination. We'll worth the dooars spent!

If you are visiting this area don't miss this restaurant...it is outstanding! My wife and I had dinner there last night. I had the Grouper special along with potato soup and she had Beef Medallions. We also had a nice bottle of wine which was reasonably priced. Both entrees were excellent, well prepared and nicely presented. At the end of the meal we shared a piece of cheese cake which was also excellent. We are staying at The Greenbrier this week and have found the restaurants there over-rated and extremely over priced. This restaurant is fairly expensive but the food and atmosphere makes it totally worthy. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant. it could easily thrive in any major city!

Had Sunday brunch here last weekend and what can I say other than amazing! If you're like me and can't do a ton of rich food you'll have leftovers for sure, but it didn't stop me from ordering everything on the menu. Presentation was beautiful, staff was friendly, and food was delicious. Called ahead of time to make a reservation and inquire about dog friendly seating, and when we arrived, they saw us coming and got a bowl of ice water to the table and welcomed her. Had their bellytini (I forget the exact name, had lemon vodka, peach puree, elderberry flower liquor, and white wine maybe?) and it was delicious! Can't say enough good things about the staff, from calling and making the reservation until we left the place. Hope to return soon with my partner so he can experience the food.

My favorite spot to dine in Lewisburg. Though I have been there several times and experienced fluctuation in the quality: their service is THE best. And, imho, the most quaint, ambient setting with the loveliest outdoor patio seating Lewisburg has to offer.

Husband had the special last night : pork medallions with grits. The best pork we ever tasted. Tender as a filet mignon--not the usual shoe leather that counts as pork at most restaurants. Grits served with a delicious sauce. My onion soup was the real deal-not just broth with croutons. It was excellent too, along with the service and atmosphere. I recommend it highly.

Ver nice upscale place. If you enjoy fine dining, you will really like this place and the friendly staff.

WOW! What a great experience! Beautiful setting, engaging service and super delicious food. We had escargot, French onion soup, gazpacho, filet, and salmon. It was ALL delicious. The French Goat is a MUST-DO when in Lewisburg!

I have eaten twice at the French Goat since summer of 2023 and every time the service and food have been outstanding. The wait staff is attentive without being overbearing. The food has been expertly prepared. The atmosphere is quaint.

The French Goat was recommended to us Sunday Brunch after a weekend at the Greenbrier. We could not have been more pleased!! First, the restaurant was clean and inviting, while classically decorated for Christmas. Our server was Trey and he was so pleasant, attentive and knowledgeable and really enhanced our experience! We ordered the basket of French pastries to start and they were light, flakey and amazing!! French press coffee went perfectly with them. The menu sounded so amazing, that we ordered 3 entrees for 2 people. Everything was seasoned to perfection and absolutely divine! 10/10 would eat there again!

What a delightful French restaurant nestled in the heart of Lewisburg. The venue is a charming lovely old home that has been turned into a comfortable dining area. The staff is kind and friendly and efficient, with a knowledge of the menu and willingness to help. We had the filet mignon, diver scallops, and duck pho after sharing the meat and cheese platter. Everything was absolutely delicious. We were served artisanal fresh breads between courses. While we did not imbibe, we were shown an impressive wine list and a tempting cocktail menu. It's a real treat to have a meal prepared by a classically trained chef who knows what he's doing and knows the ins and outs of the flavor profile of a meal.
