The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon by Hulic

"How did it strike you on arrival? It may be all ultra-contemporary design, but instead of an austere vibe, the hotel is a welcome contrast to the historic pleasure district at its doorstep. Tokyo Skytree's shifting hues make appearances through floor-to-ceiling windows, while super-clean interiors pop with bright primary colors from wall art to furnishings. What’s the crowd like? You can imagine that everyone staying here keeps a tidy home themselves. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Room styles are similar across the board. The Scenic rooms add another layer of attraction thanks to their corner views: One direction frames Tokyo Skytree, an entirely different perspective from the opposite side. Designed by Masaru Suzuki (of the popular Marimekko brand), artwork brings a splash of red to dark gray walls, and modular furniture paints the rest of the picture with royal purple armchairs and deep green carpet. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?Slumberland brand mattresses take it a notch above everyday comfort (Japan’s bedding can be a touch firm), and the sheets and pillows are both soft. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The products are a unique perk, all made in Japan by GemiD, a homegrown, naturally sourced label that customizes the hotel’s Darjeeling-tea-infused toiletries. Bright bathrooms are kitted out with standup rainfall-style showers, while the toilet—yes, one of those Japanese types with buttons—is in a fully separate room. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word? The Wi-Fi is strong in common areas, but slightly less in the rooms—although it is entirely free. Room service: Worth it?While there isn't room service, R Restaurant and Bar, which serves French-fusion fare, has a view worth savoring (and so does the guest-only bar, B: Bar, on the 14th floor). Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?The service is tip-top, and a nod to staff who look after the rooms is in order, as service tends to be swift and thoughtful (handwritten notes aren't out of the question). Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.As far as access goes, just across the street is an entrance that leads to Sensō-ji (the oldest temple in town). Bottom line: worth it, and why?So long as you're not expecting a resort-like experience that will keep you locked within the hotel, it's a well-designed booking that won't disappoint. Anything left to mention? In addition to this location, close to Senso-ji, it’s well worth checking out the Gate’s other two Tokyo spots, especially the one in Ginza" - Keith Flanagan

"As locations go, the Asakusa entertainment district’s Gate Hotel couldn’t be better situated. Just a few steps from the historic Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) of Sensoji, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo , the hotel is also only a ten-minute drive to Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s one-time tallest building visible from the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows. But there are plenty of places on site to train your eye: The property’s architecture and interiors center on art and clean design, as seen in the lobby, where an abstract lighting installation mimics the curves of a sinuous leather banquette, and in the guest rooms, which feature dark upholstered walls that offer a dramatic backdrop to brightly colored contemporary paintings."

Stayed at the Gate Hotel for the first 5 nights of our 3 week trip (2 female friends early 60s but more like 30 yr olds!). Great location, near to stations, the river and the shrine. Loved staying here. Our room was on the 2nd floor and more spacious than expected. Very comfortable, amenities including phone chargers included and a great deep bath. We agree with previous comment about a lack of atmosphere, particularly in the rooftop bar but this didnt bother us. We used the bar twice and were the only customers but it was a relaxing hour with a nice cocktail. Didnt eat in the hotel - we prefer room only - so cannot comment on that. My personal opinion is Asakusa was the best location of the 4 we stayed in during our trip.

Stayed here first two nights in Japan and this is in our view the best overall hotel we stayed in out of the eight "non-experience" we stayed at. Location is great, near to local attractions, subway and many local food options. Staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast whilst not vast, has three main options western style and an adequate buffet. Did not try restaurant otherwise as prefer to eat out lunch and dinner. Only criticism is that the room was not that spacious for two with travelling luggage and indeed one side of the bed was rather tight to get out of.

The location in Asakusa is the highlight of this hotel, and it is quite charming. The lobby is on the 13th floor and provides great initial views of the area. We were able to check in upon arrival and got situated in our room. It had a view of Kaminarimon-dori and we could see the beginning of the Nakamise shopping street from our window. The room was....small. Smaller than any other room on our trip, including our cruise ship room. We knew that going in, but looking back, I wish I'd gotten something a little larger. The roof of the hotel has great views of Asakusa, including the SkyTree, Senso-ji, the nearby Don Quijote and much much more. It was fun going up there after our first full day to see where all we'd been. We did not try the hotel restaurant...we found local bites easily and cheaply. The hotel held our bags on our last day as we needed to check out before we were ready to leave, and that was very easy. The staff was helpful and spoke basic English. Anything else and they used a translation app (which we did too!). All in all, very pleased with the value and location of this hotel!

The location near Asakusa Station is ideal. Only 2-3 min walk to the station. I only stayed one night, and as a solo traveller, I booked the smallest room they had. But it was very comfortable. Fluffy bedding and great amenities. They provide pretty much everything you could need for your stay. The shower has good pressure. The Nespresso machine comes in handy if you wake up early. They provide water and 4 Nespresso pods. There is a small fridge in the room. The hotel is next to a supermarket where you can purchase fresh fruit and other delicatessen items. I do not recommend the Onigiri they sell in this supermarket. They fall apart when you eat them. The ones at 7 Eleven are much nicer. The reception is located on the 13th Floor and offers a nice view of the Skytree tower. They keep your luggage free before check-in or after check-out.

Good location in a popular area. Smart looking hotel with some great views|Reception staff were efficient but cold and rather unfriendly|Lovely rooms ( classy room) clean and well equipped|Roof top bar which is one of the reasons we choose this hotel . However bar lacked any atmosphere at all. |Breakfast acceptable but not outstanding |Rather disappointing

It's a very nice hotel, excellent location, fantastic view from the roof terrace and bar. Apart from the obvious proximity to the Sensoji temple's Kaminarimon Gate and Asakusa metro station, I specifically chose this hotel for being close to Tobu Asakusa railway station, where the direct railway line to Nikko starts. With early (delicious) breakfast, catching our 7:30 train was very easy, and so was the return. And after a nice day in Nikko, the hotel's good position gave us ample time to enjoy the evening in Asakusa, and even visit a Sumo show nearby. All very nice memories from staying at The Gate Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon.

We stayed here as Americans on a first-time visit to Japan. This is probably one fo the best value-for-money hotels I've ever booked. Hotel facilities are limited (no gym, no minibar, probably no laundry), but everything they do have is done extremely well. Service in English was warm and efficient. The rooftop bar is gorgeous. Our family of four stayed in a Scenic and a Classy room; the former had amazing views, including from the deep soaking bathtub, and the latter was quite large for a mid-range hotel room in an urban center. Soundproofing was impeccable, beds were insanely comfortable, and we all slept better than we do at home despite jet lag. Location is perfect; Asakusa is a touristy neighborhood with all the good and the bad that comes with that, but the side streets are low-key and residential. I would easily stay here again on future visits to Tokyo.

Google
A nice hotel in a touristy area, but was the least nice, and least well-maintained hotel of the 5 we stayed in, in Japan. Room was small. AC didn’t work well—we were always a bit too warm. Refrigerator was barely below room temp, with no temp controls. Bidet was a bit old. Fixtures not top-notch. And it wasn’t as clean as we had hoped. However, staff was very polite, breakfast was excellent, with a nice rooftop bar.

Yelp
We closed out our trip to Japan with a stay in The Gate Hotel. It was the fanciest place we stayed and the most expensive too. However, it was worth it. We enjoyed the neighborhood this hotel is in. Asakusa is a bit more historical than other districts. While it is just as busy with people, it didn't have as many flashing lights or electronic billboards. Its subway station is ~5 min walk from the hotel, and it is easy to get to other areas on foot or via the metro. There is a grocery just downstairs and a couple 7/11s nearby. It is a beautiful hotel, and of course the highlight is the view from the lobby and rooftop. You can see down onto the Kaminarimon Gate and the Nakamise shopping street, you can see over the the Tokyo Sky Tree and the Asahi headquarters, and more. Rooms are still on the smaller side but clean and efficient. Didn't love the semi-transparent glass between the bathroom and bedroom. Staff is very helpful and professional, from helping us print out papers for the flight home, to storing our luggage, to putting on an excellent breakfast service each morning. Would recommend if it fits your budget!

Yelp
Really enjoyed our stay at The Gate Hotel in Asakusa. The hotel's location is great - very close to Asakusa's main tourist attractions (the Senso-Ji temple and various kiosks and shops) and conveniently located just a 5-10 min walk from the Tokyo Metro Ginza and Asakusa Line stations. The rooms were pretty big by Japanese standards - we got a "Classy" style room which had a king size bed, a couch, and an awesome view of the Tokyo Skytree. The room even had a Nespresso machine! The stay came with a free breakfast daily. The breakfast was awesome - in addition to the buffet, you get a choice of an entree. They even had freshly squeezed juices daily. There is also a rooftop bar with a nice terrace with even nicer views of the Tokyo skyline. Service was also very pleasant and most of the staff knew English. Note that the area around the hotel isn't as lively 24/7 as Shibuya or Shinjuku (a lot of stuff closes around 9 or 10 p.m., but there are options here and there open later) so if you prefer to be a little removed from the action, this place is a good choice. Would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking to spend a lot of time in the Eastern part of Tokyo (Asakusa, Ueno, Akihabara, Ginza, etc) It does take a little bit of time to get to Shibuya or Shinjuku (maybe about 30 - 40 min by subway).

Yelp
So this is a very nice hotel right by the Asakusa gate and metro stops (stops because the Asakusa line and the Ginza line stop nearby). It's really nice if you need some tourist conveniences (easy shops and restaurants) right in the area with easy walks. The alleyways around it are fantastic and you're one stop away from Skytree (the view tower to the east) and Kappabashi (the kitchen district to the west) as well as the ferry to the south. The rooms are a little bigger than a normal Tokyo room too and priced great. There's also a great view from the open terrace, bar, and restaurant. That said, the breakfast is ok but limited (I had this poached egg over rice with a dashi broth, which was great but that's about it...the rest is some simple salad, macaroni and other Benedict options or French toast. I really want a Japanese breakfast (natto, miso, broiled fish)...so I kinda gotta ding them for that. Other than that, I'd still come back and skip the buffet.

Yelp
Forewarning: This is a review from an American tourist perspective. A very nice, modern hotel in Asakusa, which is really close to the train station and steps away from one of the best and most popular tourist attractions in Tokyo, Senso-Ji temple. This has so many gorgeous sites including a shrine, gardens and hectic marketplace. If you're planning stuff to do the in the area besides this, Akihabara anime district aka "electric town" is nearby. The rooms are a good size and comfortable, with great attention to detail. The only thing I didn't like was the shower being in a separate room next to the tub. I would rather just shower in the tub or in a stall. Also, we did not care for the breakfast at the hotel restaurant. They have a buffet of salad and pasta (not really breakfast for American standards) plus a selection of 1 of the following 3 options: scrambled eggs, french toast or eggs benedict. My friend and I didn't like any of it, and didn't eat there the second morning. Also, the only English station on the TV is CNN, so be prepared, so American visitors beware. The best part of the stay was the excellent service. They really make you feel welcome. I also loved the convenient location and the beautiful view from the lobby.

Yelp
We stayed here our first night in Japan- I picked it solely because it's a 5 minute walk from the Senso-ji Temple and one stop from the Skytree! It's a grey and black building beside a supermarket, pharmacy, Starbucks, and other restaurants nearby. The lobby is on the 13th floor and that's also the same floor for breakfast. Everyone was extremely nice and welcoming and it was super clean- I don't think I even saw a speck of dust. The suite was spacious with a view of the Skytree and I appreciated all the toiletries they provided us. Breakfast is misleading because it claims it's a buffet, but they have a limited buffet of bread, granola, some fruit, honeycomb, and you choose either curry eggs benedict, eggs benedict, or french toast. It was on the smaller side, but that could just be the American in me. The fresh squeeze orange juice is a must try and don't forget to check out the balcony on the top floor.
