On the Grid : Gelateria Del Leone

"The next best thing to being in Florence. Gelateria Del Leone specializes in gelato but unlike the shops they're modeled after in Italy, they have fully embraced the idea of a cafe. It’s a wonderful place to work, relax, or talk with your friends. If you’re new to gelato you can never go wrong with “stracciatella” a traditional vanilla and chocolate chip flavor." - Grain

The coffee was just fine , lets get that straight. Good cup coffee , the price was pretty good too. The atmosphere was a homerun. Friendly staff. The music was at a perfect level for enjoying and for those who came to chat. The crowd was diverse and the pizza looked great .. looked .. I did not try it, so I cant suggest it. The desserts also looked amazing. Go there for a 1st coffee date. It's charming.

Google
I had a wonderful time at this place! I grabbed a coffee and ice cream during a breakfast date with my husband. The staff were super friendly, and the patio was a great spot to read and relax.

Bryson

Google
The Gelateria is a huge coffee shop hangout spot on S Grand on the Southside. If you are looking for a coffee or some gelato then this is definitely a place you should check out. They have plenty of seating, main floor and upstairs. I recommend this coffee shop to any and everybody. Plus a seasonal patio.

Christy Gilbert

Google
Although crowded, more so upon leaving, the vibe was collegiate. This two story coffee house offered a good cup of coffee and pastries. One can sit and imagine the families that may have resided there from days gone by. I did not try the Gelato, maybe next time. If you are tired of the big chain coffee places, give The Gelateria a try.

Kimberly Auzins

Google
The atmosphere of this place is rustic and cozy. Their customer service was friendly and upbeat; love the vibes! The Honey Lavender latte was by far my favorite; so smooth and frothy -- rich and delicious! I tried the Lemon Lavender gelato as well as the Butterscotch and to be honest I expected them to be a bit more sweet, but they were still good. Love the different varieties and unique flavor options. But personally, I enjoyed the coffee more than I did the gelato ☕🔥

Sophie May

Google
Some of the friendliest cafe workers I have ever met! The chocolate chip cookie is one of the best I’ve ever had. The coffee menu is on the traditional side but the baristas are very flexible with accommodations, the upstairs is a good place to study and hang out

Alex Besmer

Google
You walk into some beautiful wooden floors and scenery. The stunning gelato is on display and makes you want to take it all home. You keep walking to a nice nook that looks perfect for reading. I got a latte and a mini-pizza which were both tasty. Great for a little snack or if you want to enjoy a cozy weekend treat. The other pastries are made fresh and brought out on demand. Definitely coming back and possibly bringing a book to spend a few hours here when it gets more chilly outside.

Google
They have awesome Gelato. And great place to work remotely or read or study. They have a beautiful backyard courtyard with a fountain and gorgeous plants and foliage and blue mosaic tables. And there is additional quiet workspace upstairs, lots of nooks. And the first floor has cool bookshelves and working spaces. They also have snacks.

Yelp
Established in 2007, The Gelateria Coffee Company stands as a fixture of South Grand. There is a neighborhood camaraderie feel in this spot. This is a coffee spot, a snack spot and a gelato spot. Psssttt. The salted caramel crunch! You're welcome! The Gelateria sees everyone - be it a work meeting, a study group, a before work coffee, or, like me, just stopping in for my gelato dessert.
google avatar

Jo Nell R.

Yelp
If you park and walk along Grand there are so many great spots. First time visit to the Gelateria and it won't be the last. We looked around at the space and ventured outside, it is so pretty with the foliage and the fountains. A great space to relax with coffee or a sweet treat! Back inside, Hope helped us. Although we didn't get gelato she encouraged us to try a couple flavors that we had questions about. Hope was super friendly and answered questions with a great attitude. One of those employees that makes a great asset for customers. I asked about a coffee drink that I've had elsewhere and Hope said they could make it. It was really good! Can't wait to return and try food and have ice cream while relaxing on the patio.

Yelp
Wasn't sure what to expect from a gelataria, but I wasn't disappointed. So many options, Berry, Salted Caramel, London Fog, cotton candy. The options are endless. Also- go ahead & try all the flavors! They don't even mind! The guy behind the corner was happy to let me try them all! Dark is the vibe in there. But gelato isn't the only thing they serve up. You can find small bites, coffee & pastries! Try it out on South Grand!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
The last stop on my adventures on South Grand led me here. What a perfect way to end a delightful afternoon. The cafe offers food, pastries, and gelato. The selection is fantastic. There is definitely something for everyone. I went with the lemon basil on my visit. Wow!! Bright and refreshing. The gelato cone in three sizes. I found the medium size to be the perfect size for a sweet treat. The counter staff were friendly and worked quickly to get treats into the hands of customers. I grabbed a seat in the window nook and just enjoyed myself.

Yelp
I haven't been back here for a long time. There was a long line when I walked in but it moved quickly. It was awesome that they had Oat gelato. They ran out of Oat Stracciatella so I got the Oat strawberry instead. It was delicious. I used to like the tiramisu here and it was exactly as good as how I remembered. The raspberry chocolate was very good too. They also have food and coffee here. Such a great spot for desserts/ coffee date.
google avatar

Ali L.

Yelp
I absolutely adore this spot! I got the iced oat latte with hazelnut and a half focaccia sandwich. Everything tastes fresh and delicious! I want to go back for the gelato. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It has a modern look to it. The baristas are also very kind and helpful! What a cool coffee spot to visit!
google avatar

Kelse S.

Yelp
I love this spot! I came here after a meeting to grab a coffee and do some work. The front of the building looks like a European Cafe which I absolutely love. The interior has a classic feel with the aesthetic and is a bit darker with lighting- made me feel like a library vibe a bit. The gelato is right in front of you when you walk in which is a great thing to be greeted by. I ordered and iced latte with oat milk and cinnamon. I connected to Wi-Fi in the meantime to get some work done. I was tempted to get one of the chocolate chip cookies, but held back since I wasn't in a sweets kinda mood. They looked incredible and we're huge. Coffee was good and had a great ratio of cinnamon. I sat outside at the storefront at their small tables and got some work done. I'd def stop here again!
google avatar

Suzane C.

Yelp
Enjoyable place to visit. Upon entering there is a glass encased counter with many scrumptious lookin gelatos. Further down they have a selection of mouth watering pastries. My son ordered espresso, which he said was excellent. I got a small pistachio hand a scoop of chocolate gelato, On this beautiful day, we moved to their enclosed garden and courtyard. A very pleasant place to enjoy company while savoring the delicate flavors of gelato.
google avatar

Jaz M.

Yelp
The sweet I've cream smell hits you as soon as you enter. This is a cute little gelato shop with some exciting flavors. The gelato is smooth and has a nice thick consistency. The spicy chocolate one was different and delicious. There were a few sweet treats as well. A good place to visit for fun flavors and good service. There's street parking available all around. Recommended.
google avatar

Rie U.

Yelp
TLDR: Cuuuuute cute cute little shop for light bites, coffee, and gelato!! I'm a gelato & ice cream all-year-round kinda person; it's never too cold for an ice cream and it's never too hot for ramen! So naturally, I came here on a 26F November morning and ordered some coffee, a breakfast sandwich, and a little gelato for dessert. Gotta say, the breakfast sandwich was delightful! The egg and cheese were so light and fluffy, and there was a nice savory sauce that made the sandwich a little special. The drip coffee was solid. The chai gelato was a little icy in texture but the subtle sweetness really brought out the chai flavor and was absolutely lovely. The staff really makes this neighborhood shop a gem. The two ladies behind the counter were friendly and efficient, and had some helpful insight when it came to "what's the best gelato here?" Needless to say, I will be back! :)
google avatar

Princess D.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place! I had their mixed berry and cheese danish and their blackberry mocha latte with oatmilk and everything was delicious. The back patio is super cute too!
google avatar

Katherine B.

Yelp
Woah! Try the blackberry mocha and thank me later. It tastes like one of those fancy European chocolates (with real chocolate). Perfect for one of those "Spring" days like today when it snaps back 30 degrees colder for no reason. The barista was so sweet too, and it wasn't super crowded inside early morning so I'll prob be back to work remote.
google avatar

Kevin H.

Yelp
Hooray for trying a new coffee spot! Happy to say I found another good one. Gelataria offers not only great coffee, but a nice variety of pastries, and a good selection of gelato/ice cream as well! The space is super cute, has an upstairs that offers separate small rooms for small gathering or work/study space. They have a beautiful patio out back as well for nice weather. Can't wait to go back and try the tiramisu gelato!
google avatar

Isra T.

Yelp
5 star coffee shop. Located in tower grove which is just the cutest to walk through during spring and summer, and the ambiance at gelateria is very mid century mansion with lots of great natural lighting and so many windows. They have outdoor patio seating as well! And lots of seating both upstairs and downstairs, as well as outlets to charge your devices. Free wifi. All of this, plus AMAZING lunch sandwiches, and even gelato! Their coffee is also very tasteful. I loved it here; the baristas are also very nice and helpful with offering drink and food recommendations. I am excited to come back, as it's a great place to study or read by yourself or meet up with friends or family.
google avatar

Heer S.

Yelp
SUCH a cute spot. Old renovated house vibes with great coffee and baked goods, perfect studying atmosphere. I've been there quite a few times but tried their gelato for the first time the other night and will be going back way more often. Dairy free options were some of the best i've ever had
google avatar

Dinh P.

Yelp
So happy to see an entire case of oat milk gelato!!! (There was also a case of traditional gelato). As a vegan having this many gelato options is a rarity. I had the peanut butter cup flavor, and it was delicious. We also had a yummy affogato. Loved the chill library vibe upstairs. It was peaceful, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
google avatar

Dejah M.

Yelp
A study spot that is open late, say no more fam. Their iced brown sugar latte was super great and they have so much seating to enjoy your gelato and coffee. If you want to be cozy, there is a nook with a couple tables on the bottom level, there is seating upstairs for a more quiet atmosphere, and then there's a patio outside for those nice summer days and nights. I definitely recommend coming here! I've had gelato from here before and it is so yummy! Great location around a lot of other good spots too!
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
Gelato is very yummy, as is their chocolate chip cookie. Great place to study or work, either solo or with friends. Upstairs is very cute, as is courtyard. Service always friendly
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Gelatos were great- blueberry was surprisingly my fave! We also got an iced Americano, which was great. There's lots of seating on both first and second floor for studying/working. I'd recommend finding a parking spot on the side street rather than paying for street parking.

Mark T.

Yelp
Their number one sandwich might be my favorite in town. Great vibe and good people. They don't serve lunch until 11:30 but good coffee and pastries before.
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Love this spot! Great staff and great ambiance! They have nice chairs to sit in and even some board games to play and books to read! Their gelato is really yummy. They even have a little outdoor patio in the back with tables and chairs.
google avatar

Tigra C.

Yelp
I finally popped inside this place to see if they offered vegan options and was pleasantly surprised to find that one of their two cases was dedicated to vegan options. The vegan case features 8 flavors which, based on my experience, rotate (but I don't know how often). They are mostly fruity sorbet flavors. However, on my first visit they had both vanilla and chocolate oatmilk flavors! I was uber geeked because I had yet to try anything with oatmilk. It was delicious and so creamy! On my last visit the chocolate was gone but the vanilla oatmilk was still around. This time I opted for their pineapple coconut flavor and it was awesome! Perfect for cooling off in the STL heat. I always get a small and it's plenty filling for me. You can choose up to 2 flavors with the small. They even had a gluten-free vegan bundt cake the last time I went! I got a piece and saved it for later. Ate some yesterday and was shooketh by how good it was! Not the typical dry GF cake... It was moist and full of yummy lemon with slight lavender taste. They are cashless right now, as a COVID-19 safety precaution. ApplePay is accepted and they have a rewards program for frequent visitors so definitely sign up for that.
google avatar

Tikku G.

Yelp
Lots of gelato flavors if that's what you're looking for. I opted for a cherry cream cheese danish which was delicious. I can't wait to try it again!
google avatar

Summer H.

Yelp
Got the pistachio bun, like a cinnamon bun but with a nice pistachio twist! Great place to study as they have seating both upstairs and downstairs.
google avatar

Brooke S.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop with plenty of seating and plugs to stay and work. Outdoor patio and upstairs spaces. Iced latte was delicious! Highly recommend!

R R.

Yelp
Expectations definitely met since I came here for my last affogato. The girl who made it was very nice, made me beautiful layers of gelato, then this guy topped it off very nicely with the espresso. The experience was very pleasant. Gorillaz was playing. Only thing that could've topped this all off would be some London Fog.
google avatar

Sadie K.

Yelp
This place is so cute! They had plenty of unique flavors to try. Anything from coffee flavor (which was more ice cream-like( to blueberry which is more like a sherbet (if that's how you spell it). I think they had some random flavors like spicy mango too. They have indoor and outdoor seating with a little patio in the back. Will definitely be coming back here. The lady was very friendly and patient when helping us figure out what flavor we wanted and let us try a few.
google avatar

Isaac B.

Yelp
Look, this spot is in the heart of the stay at home set . You will find a bunch of Karen's living their hall and Oates fantasy, but, you will also find some really sweet and helpful employees who are passionate about gelato and a great atmosphere. I love the pendant lighting, gonna steal that for sure. Dulce de leche, and coconut curry small scoop combo is the play.
google avatar

Zack G.

Yelp
Coffeehouse inside of an old converted house on S Grand with gelato, coffee, & baked goods. There are plenty of tables and a few nice chairs downstairs, and A TON of little nooks and cranny's to study at upstairs. Also have an inclosed patio that is very pretty I got a pastry and a decaf late, and I was not impressed. The coffee was burnt and the pastry was stale.
google avatar

Todd W.

Yelp
This actually was a real chill back place didn't know I've stayed so close to, a area like this I'll definitely be back nice coo vibe nice outside patio really neat thanks for the awsome experience..

Andrew P.

Yelp
Great little place! I had their chai Gelato with espresso poured over it, their house-roasted Guatemala brew, and a "Gooey Butter Cake Brownie." The brownie had chewy, caramelized edges that were delicious! The Guatemala roast had strong berry notes balanced out by medium smoky bitterness. And I highly recommend the chai Gelato + espresso combination! They also carry Coma Coffee, a fantastic local roaster as well as some teas. The vibe was low-key and relaxed, and the music was upbeat but in the background. Upstairs is under renovation and the patio looks great for warmer weather. Classic dark wood decor with crown molding and lots of books to read in the shelves. Try pairing a trip here with Apotheosis Comics down the block! The restrooms are not gendered.
google avatar

Julia W.

Yelp
Sweet, friendly people paired with good coffee and tasty pastries. This little coffee shop on Grand provides a nice break from the stores and bustle of the street. It holds a special place in my heart, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it.

Jamie F.

Yelp
Can't stop thinking about the peanut butter oat milk gelato, so stinkin good. Being dairy free I loved that they had so many options for me (6-8 oat milk flavors). Also had a bunch of regular gelato flavors. The staff was super helpful and nice and prices were decent. The patio is super awesome, lots of seating and a cute lil fountain. Will definitely be going back to try their coffee and pastries (which looked A+).

Kayla B.

Yelp
I love this place and have been coming here since I first moved to stl 8 years ago. Staff seems much happier since the change in ownership a couple years back. I think they have some of the best cold brew in the city and I love the later hours and the chill environment. My only complaint is that the bathroom was semi-recently painted hot pink and it's truly terrible. I will go out of my to not use that bathroom because I find it so unpleasant to be in. Please gelateria, there are so many talented artists in the city, please consider repainting your bathroom again.

Dale G.

Yelp
so delicious & knocks it out of the park every time!! very clean, employees are always so helpful & their gelato is the best i've had
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and the workers are so happy and nice that they make you want to come again and again! The coffee is great and they make their drinks with a great balance between the espresso flavor and the oat or regular milk! I highly recommend adding Gelateria to your coffee route!!!
google avatar

Herbi G.

Yelp
ive been going here for years! always delicious and light on the stoumach! very sweet people!
google avatar

Shizuka T.

Yelp
I've been coming here since 2010, and I still love stopping by every once in a while. My favorite is their london fog (earl grey) gelato. This past week, I visited for the first time in a couple of years, and they had non-dairy options such as soy vanilla and other sherbert/sorbet flavors. I thought that was really cool of them to do that. Usually if the line is not long, they're cool with you trying multiple flavors before finally picking out your scoops. Keep in mind that each scoop is pretty decent sized. The smallest cup allows two scoops, which can be quite a lot depending on how full you already are from dinner. My friends have tried their coffee/cappuccino/hot chocolate, etc. and I've had a chance to take a sip for all of them. Pretty delicious but a bit pricey. This will always be a staple dessert location for me.
google avatar

Jamie W.

Yelp
Don't eat the pastries! I ate a "brekkie" with ham and cheese that also had egg on it. I asked for it to be heated up and assumed that it would be safe to eat. I was wrong. Within an hour, it came back up.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
Cute place for gelato on Grand- a cool place for your after-dinner dessert! This was my first time here so I am not sure how many flavors they normally have available- this past weekend they had about 10 and they were all original, quirky flavors! The gelateria itself is cozy and offers comfortable chairs as well as board games for entertainment!
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Solid gelato place! Super nice and cozy inside with a back outdoor place you can chill and talk too. This place is a good place to study too with bigger tables and a coffee shop feel to it. Love the gelato, not too sweet but still good rich and flavorful
google avatar

Patricia O.

Yelp
Beautiful place with a good selection of gelato flavors. The service is amazing, everyone was very polite and helpful. Follow me on Instagram: @tryatreat

Alexander U.

Yelp
This is a small atmospheric coffee shop. Based on the quality of their cortado, espresso is as close to perfection as I can tell. Their ice cream is also very good. It has a cozy mix of bookstore/cafe vibes and works pretty nice for meeting friends and doing some work on weekends. Just bear in mind that the space is a bit limited.
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I came to Gelateria Del Leone to study with some friends and WOW! I can't believe this was the first time I've been here. We liked it so much, we came 2 days in a row. As soon as you walk in, there is somewhat a cozy atmosphere. *Gelato Bar (Wide variety of unique flavors) *Long tables to left side of the bar. Drinks: *Espresso drinks (Caramel Macchiato, Latte, Doppio, Cortado, etc) *other drinks (London Fog, Hot chocolate, Chai) *apparently, they also have a cafe menu... found couple days later. I ordered a Latte with Vanilla. Good amount of espresso for "normal coffee drinkers", but can use a little bit more espresso for "crazy coffee drinkers"... The temperature was okay to drink, but I would like it a little bit hotter. Pretty presentation, flowery! My friend got double scoop of the Gelato. I forgot to ask him how it was, but it had to be delicious because 1. He devoured it before I can ask for a little scoop. 2. He ordered it 2 days in a row. I almost forgot to mention the best part of this place. They have multiple rooms upstairs if you want to study in a quieter place or work with friends. The rooms have minimum lighting so when it gets dark outside, it does make it harder to see or even focus on work. You can always just work downstairs because the lighting is better. ****Rooms upstairs can be reserved**** Definitely one of my new fave study spots!
google avatar

Christy A.

Yelp
The best thing about Del Leone are the last night hours of operation! Can't beat it, especially on a weekend when the sweet tooth is particularly fertile. Customer service is ok...that's it. Just ok. There are a couple seats outside on the tiny sidewalk but fret not, there's plenty room indoors. It's nice and quiet; great for meetings, working or the occasional dessert date. Flavors are pretty good and coffee is available for the aftermath. Enjoy!
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
Really cute, cozy place. The chocolate gelato was good and it was nice enough to sit on the back patio. The gal at the counter wasn't exactly friendly, which was awkward. I appreciate the bin for the plastic cups and spoons to recycle them!
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
I stopped at Gelateria Del Leone on a Wednesday afternoon for a quick little afternoon pick me up. I ordered a small cinnamon gelato. It's a cute place and I have been before and enjoyed it but on this day I wasn't feeling it. The cinnamon gelato had some ice crystals in it. This led me to believe maybe it wasn't so fresh? It doesn't help that I have had the Vietnamese Cinnamon ice cream at Clementine's Creamery two times now and it blows me away. This paled in comparison. Sorry Gelateria. I also felt like the selection looked a little sparse...
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
While unassuming on the street, you have GOT to check this place out! I was in for breakfast. Amazing coffee and a wide selection of baked goods. Prices were incredibly affordable. Staff was friendly. What sold me is the environment. This is an old converted house, with multiple nooks for every type of person. The offer books for the reader, with comfy chairs, group tables, a lovely patio to sit and chat, and a quiet upstairs for studying or conferences (you can book a room with them on weekdays!). I love that this place has so many different spaces within it to fit so many different needs. Overall a fantastic place!

Kesha B.

Yelp
I stumbled into this coffee shop while visiting St Louis after 20 years. I was waiting for a table at The now closed pho Grand. I had the best latte ever! I felt that it was made perfectly. My girls enjoyed the gelato. I will definitely return when I visit St Louis again.
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
Love the building. It's so warm and inviting. The back patio is very cute as well. It's so cute with the lights hanging up once it's dark outside. I got a hot chocolate with almond milk. Now I'm not sure how they mix their hot chocolates but the one I had had big clumps of cocoa mix still in it. The barista wasn't very helpful either. It seemed like she would much rather be someplace else than helping us. I understand as a former barista that you don't always want to be at work. But you should still interact with the customers. 10/10 will return to try the coffee!
