We had a fabulous dinner here. The oysters were delicious, particularly the grilled ones with bacon jam. My husband said his sirloin steak was one of the best he’d ever eaten. The staff were friendly and attentive and relit the fire next to our table specially for us.

We didn't stay in the hotel, but visited its restaurant for Sunday dinner. And it was exquisite. We went for haddock with chips - such a treat! Full of taste, and just the way it should be - crispy on the outside and soft inside. The dining room is very atmospheric, with a large fireplace and stone walls. Staff was great- helpful and polite. A must visit when in Inveraray.

As always, absolutely brilliant room and meal however we have noticed a change in service since the last time we were there. I heard there were new owners so not sure if it could be that but took ages to order a drink with our lunch and same again at dinner time. Bedroom was stunning and the views are just gorgeous. We love the small snug bar in winter and the outdoor bar are in summer. A definite favourite in all seasons. Not sure if the mooring belongs to the hotel, would be good to know as we might sail up next time :)

The food here was so good that we went back the following evening. Inventive menu, great choices and all the dishes we had were incredible - especially the Venison loin dish which was absolutely delicious - expertly cooked and superb balance of flavours.

Food was delicious and portions were good and chunky. The pate and the smoked haddock particularly nice. Staff were fun and service great. Prices reasonable. The room with its stone walls, fairy lights and open fire was very atmospheric. Highly recommend.

My husband and I are from Canada, and decided to get married in May in Glencoe. We knew we wanted our 25 guests to have a place to stay for the night and our planner had sent us a few locations that were close by. The George was exactly what we had wanted. We could not have made a better choice. The George was basically the star of our wedding day. It was the absolute best place for everyone to have a good rest after our cozy wedding day.|Claudio went above and beyond, so much more than we could have ever expected. Booking 16 rooms was something we were not looking forward to but they made it so easy. We expected to walk in and have a very casual pub style dinner, and we were blown away when we walked in and saw how beautiful the room they set up for us was.|The hotel rooms had both us, and all of our guests talking - even still to this day. It was such a lovely dinner, night, and morning. I think every single guest was walking around the next morning after breakfast taking in how lovely Inveraray is.|We will absolutely be back to The George Hotel next time we wander through Scotland.

We stayed at The George Hotel as guests of relatives over New Year 24/25 with our ancient springer spaniel. This place is by far the most dog friendly hotel we have ever stayed in anywhere. The staff we friendly and nothing was ever too much trouble, food in the restaurant was excellent. Well done to all the staff, superb.

Whilst they were very busy, the staff managed to find space for our group of 11 in the bar for a delicious meal. They were very friendly and accommodating. Thankyou for the warm welcome, good food and fine single malts!

Yelp
Loved the George hotel's atmosphere, service, and Cullen Skink. One of our favorite pub's when visiting Scotland.

Yelp
Stopped here for a beer and whisky before heading off to the island of Islay. Cute little pub that's part of the George Hotel.

Yelp
The people who work there are lovely but the hotel itself feels shabby. We booked a higher level room that was large (appreciated) but the furniture was uncomfortable and not really conducive to hanging out. We had trouble with the shower- at one point just turned off and then when it came on again difficult to adjust the temp. The robes provided were plush and comfortable as were the towels. Breakfast was ok

Yelp
Visited the George on Friday the 3rd of January 2025 with family from America. Disappointed was an understatement, the wait staff were however very good and tried to make us happy but unfortunately the food was shocking. My husband and mother had different paninis, both had very little filling and the chicken club panini had a few trips of chicken and nothing else. My Cullen Skink soup was horrible, it had a unknown green liquid squirted on top and was full of very little but a few bits of fish, very under cooked potatoes and heaving with long bits of leek, so much so that half way through I had to stop trying to find the fish and just give up. I had also ordered crusty bread with olive oil and vinaigrette, I instead got a small bit of crusty bread, a small bit of uncrusty brown bread and two pieces of garlic toast. We ordered two fish and chips which came out soaked in oil making us think that the old was not hot enough when cooking started. This meal was not cheap and when we commented on the paninis we were not offered any discount to mirror the actual meal that had been given. I will not be going back to the George which makes me very sad as the standard has been dropping for a while but we keep hoping things will change to reflect the amazing establishment of years gone by.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant only. Delicious comfort dishes prepared well with super friendly but slower service. Worth the wait so be patient! Really enjoyed the seafood platter with excellent oysters and yummy smoked mussels. The sticky toffee pudding was awesome without being too sweet. The vanilla ice cream that went with it was a weird flavor but not terrible.

Yelp
I can only speak to the restaurant and not the hotel but for the food alone I have to give it five stars. We stopped here for lunch while in the Highlands tour as they came highly recommended from our guide. There's some thing about Scottish beef that makes it so much better than any American burger I've ever had (and I've had quite a few). We started with a cup of the soup which was absolutely phenomenal. I often find myself underwhelmed by soup but this tomato bisque was one of the best I've ever had. The burger was perfectly cooked and the cheese and all the toppings perfectly complemented the rich meat and crispy chips (or fries we call them in America). Even the little side salad that it came with that I'm sure is supposed to be more of a garnish was actually very tasty. The ordering process took a minute as there was only one person and we had a rather large group but the food came out quickly and if I were ever in this area again I would definitely make a point to stop bye

Yelp
Don't stay in the hotel unless you like a sing-a-long in your room until after midnight on Friday and Saturdays. Seriously it is so loud in the rooms it feels like you are in the middle of the bar. Ill never stay here again.

Julia D.

Yelp
I cannot be more grateful and thankful of employees of the George Hotel restaurant for letting us stay and drink our whisky after the restaurant was officially closed. I get the worst anxiety about doing that and our server was AMAZING about it. Everything was great. My crayfish bisque was legitimately the best soup I've had in my LIFE. The only reason we came here was because Samphire closes at 9pm, but stops serving food at 8:15pm...? They referred us to the George and I was disappointed, but after experiencing the atmosphere at the George Hotel and having an incredible meal, I was DEFINITELY not disappointed. MMMMMMMMM

Yelp
We're staying close by but stopped in here for a drink & dinner. I highly recommend this place for it's local food, old-world atmosphere and friendly wait staff. I ordered the Scottish hake, which came with an egg, mashed potatoes and spinach. It was drenched in some divine sauce. Excellent! They server also recommended local beers. I loved the dim, intimate feel as well. I think they are one of the few places open a little late.

Yelp
I love a beautiful Scottish hotel with a bit of history behind it. This building has been around since 1770 when it was originally two private houses before it became The George Hotel in 1860. The Clark family own and run this wonderful hotel and have done now for seven generations! You can feel the pride and passion that the family has for this hotel the second you walk through the door. The place just looks and feels so friendly and welcoming and you feel like you have been transported back in time. The hotel has been restored since the 1800s of course but much of the original features remain which is what gives The George its unique charm. The surrounding scenery is some of the best in Scotland with views of the stunning hills and loch. The George is in an ideal location for anyone who wants to go out and see what Scotland has to offer, and that includes us Scots! I love living so close to Glasgow's city centre but when I want to get away from it all without going too far from home then somewhere like The George Hotel in Inveraray is ideal. I first became aware of The George Hotel when a friend of mine had her wedding reception there. It was love at first sight for me. We had our meal in the conservatory and partied away for hours in the cocktail bar. It was all exposed brick, slate floors and wooden everything else! There are wonderful roaring fireplaces in the cocktail bar which were great to sit by the following morning while I ate my hangover fry up, yum yum! My friend had booked a piper to pipe her and her husband into the venue after the ceremony in a neighboring church but unfortunately he let her down at the last minute. Luckily the owner of The George had a son who played the bagpipes and he done a sterling job filling in for the missing piper in full Scottish get up of kilt, sporran and all the other accessories. Now if that's not fantastic customer service then I don't know what is! I stayed in one of the master bedrooms on that occasion and it was lovely but the newlyweds were staying in the Merchants Room and it is absolutely breathtaking. For a start the door is a door from a 1820s merchant ship (hence the name Merchants Room) and there is a raised, double jacuzzi! The bed is absolutely huge and to say that this room is grand and decadent is an understatement. I have posted some small photos here but I highly recommend you visit the hotels website and click on the virtual tour of the room. It has to be seen to be believed! It you would like to stay in the Merchants Room you'll need to book months and months in advance as every time I have requested this room it has always been fully booked. If you can't get the Merchants Room though the other rooms on offer are also of an extremely high standard and you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Welcoming space with very friendly attentive staff. We had the grilled Langostino (excellent), Cullen Skink (yum), beef stew (good), and grilled lamb (excellent). We want to come back!

Yelp
If you are visiting Inveraray, you'll probably get there as part of the many different 1-day coach tours of the area that routinely include Inveraray Castle (called "Lochs and Castles", by Timberbush Tours, in my case). And if you have enough time (30 minutes minimum) for a lunch or early dinner before or (usually) after a visit to the castle, this is the place I recommend. The George Hotel is located at the upper end of the main street, just around the corner from Inveraray Jail (another photo opportunity) and opposite of the town's whisky shop. They offer a fair (not huge) selection of lagers and ales (usually 3 or so on hand pumps) and a traditional Scottish menu, as you might expect. It's a bit of a tourist trap, to be sure, but not too much so. The decor is rustic, clean and straightforward. There's plenty of space (a main room inside the house proper plus a big atrium), which may give you an idea that it's popular with tourists. I had haggis, neeps and tatties as a mains (nice, recommended - somewhat unusual with green peppercorns in the whisky sauce) and a seafood starter (small, not recommended at the price), along with a couple of well-kept beers. UKP 24 for the whole. Not cheap then. Staff are friendly, unfussy and competent. It's an okay place. Would go there again if given the chance, which is not bloody likely though.

Yelp
Gotta say traveling with my best friend my wife and two of my best friends for 11 days in Scotland. This is one of my favorite pubs and lunch dining experiences so far after 4 days. Tried Haggis, and it is awesome as are the whiskey selections and draught beers on tap. "Yinz guys gotta a great place".

Yelp
We were recommended this place by our Rabbies tour guide and he knew what he was talking about! My dad and brother both got fish and chips while I got pork with a fried egg on it. I did not even really realize what I was ordering but I could not have been more pleasantly surprised! The environment of the dining room was light and pleasant, which added to the experience!

Yelp
We had a nice dinner here, which turned out to be very delicious. High quality ingredients in everything, from the salad to the kids meals. I had my son's leftover steak pie kids meal, and it was honestly some of the best I've ever had.

Yelp
A favourite destination for a scenic drive from Glasgow. Nice interior with the ceiling festooned with lights, good food (moist chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream is hard to beat) and friendly service.

Yelp
Popped in to the George Hotel on the way back from Oban for some macaroni cheese on a particularly freezing Sunday afternoon. Staff were great, really attentive and friendly. Mac n' cheese was excellent and just what the doctor ordered. My partner had the burger with cheese, chips and salad. It was really substantial and he really enjoyed it too. Noticed a lot of the tables had reserved signs on and when questioned, the staff advised they weren't reserved but they were holding them in case bigger groups come in. Bit cheeky if you ask me. Price-wise, definitely value for money and perfect place to escape the cold with the fire on and folk mulling around reading the Sunday papers. Well worth a look.

Yelp
Make sure you are in the right bar. Hang a left from the front door. The bar to the right pales in comparison! Sitting at the bar, it's hard to ignore the incredibly large selection of whisky. Bigger than alot of pubs in Edinburgh! Between the 2 of us, we tried 7 over 3 hours. They were punctuated by the fantastic langoustines they were serving and the smoked seafood platter. Both delicious. Barmen were very helpful. Use the recommended whisky list. They know of which they write. I happily paid 9 pounds for their top pick: Macphunn. So good, I bought a bottle the next day!

Yelp
This may have been the best dining experience I've ever had. The ambiance is incredible, just what I'd want a Scottish pub to be. Steak pie and the Roast beef are highly recommended!! Great, fast and friendly service, fair prices. Wish we could stay longer!

Yelp
The George Hotel is a beautiful Scottish hotel with lovely views over the loch. The surrounding is so beautiful and quiet and is a great place to visit if you fancy a different environment to the hustle and bustle of the city. I have been to the George twice now and have thoroughly enjoyed my visits each time. The food is great and the drinks are fairly cheap - we got 3 alcoholic drinks and the cost came to around £8! During my most recent fist, I ordered a spaghetti bolognese (boring I know) and it was delicious! The cheese that accompanied the dish separately did however taste like croissants?! Very weird! For desert I had their cheesecake of the day which I think was a blueberry and lemon - really lovely but the portion size was just way too big for me otherwise I would have demolished it! The staff are also very friendly and helpful. The restaurant a very old traditional feel to it with wooden decor. They also have a beer garden which is beautiful and very cosy. It is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
I stopped in for a meal here and really enjoyed it. The pub has a cozy old world feel to it and the locals are warm and friendly. I met the owner who is a funny and welcoming man. I sat at the bar in the pub because I liked the old stone walls and dim lighting. They also have a lighter dining area and outdoor seating. I had the Mac n cheese with garlic toast and it was very tasty with a tomato and baked cheese on top. I'm l probably going back again tomorrow. Great place!

Yelp
Popped into here for a meal, but regretted it the second we arrived. Staff were just awful - appalling service and appalling attitudes. Average food, large portions and food was freshly cooked which is about the only thing going for it - shame about the staff as this ruined the whole visit - with the choice available locally, will never need to visit here again.

Melissa D.

Yelp
This was a great pub with tons of character - which you would never guess walking past! We didn't stay in the hotel but had a wonderful dinner and drink at the bar. The place was really traditional in the best way. You could really feel the history of the area in the atmosphere of the place. The food was decent, I ordered on the light side but my boyfriend's burger looked impressive. It came topped with a generous slice of Stilton and delicious chips. It was busy but that didn't prevent the wait staff from being attentive nor the pub feeling too noisy. I was visiting from out of town and wish this was my local!

Andrey L.

Yelp
We came here for dinner, because it was recommended by our host, and we absolutely loved the food, the cocktails and the whisky selection. This place is a true gem!

Andrew M.

Yelp
Went here for beers, dessert, and a kids meal. This place was great. Good service; good food; and very atmospheric. The people sitting across from us all got full meals which looked great (and big portions). Their sticky toffy pudding was good and my son devoured his chicken strips. Fries were great, of course. Nice selection of beers on tap. And it was kid friendly too. There are two bars in here; we sat in the martini bar which was bigger, and has lots of private nooks and crannies making it better for our family with two young kids. Food is served both places and it is kid friendly!

Fredrik H.

Yelp
Haven't tried the hotel but only the 'Coctail bar' (the one to the left as you enter). Staff was friendly and service quick, and the food was spectacular - and cheap. I would gladly have paid more for the quality of food and service they provide.

Yelp
Me, my partner, my brother and his wife had a fantastic time in the George Hotel during their bluebell festival, which runs on the last bank holiday weekend in May. Outdoor in the beer garden during the day there was some amazing bands playing...keeping everyone well entertained. In the evening everyone moves in doors where the live bands don't stop...highly recomend to anyone who enjoys live music and a good atmospher.....it was eletric. It was a very busy event, but credit to the bar staff you never waited very long for our drinks..... We will be attending next year!!!!!!!!
