If you are visiting Inveraray, you'll probably get there as part of the many different 1-day coach tours of the area that routinely include Inveraray Castle (called "Lochs and Castles", by Timberbush Tours, in my case). And if you have enough time (30 minutes minimum) for a lunch or early dinner before or (usually) after a visit to the castle, this is the place I recommend.
The George Hotel is located at the upper end of the main street, just around the corner from Inveraray Jail (another photo opportunity) and opposite of the town's whisky shop. They offer a fair (not huge) selection of lagers and ales (usually 3 or so on hand pumps) and a traditional Scottish menu, as you might expect. It's a bit of a tourist trap, to be sure, but not too much so.
The decor is rustic, clean and straightforward. There's plenty of space (a main room inside the house proper plus a big atrium), which may give you an idea that it's popular with tourists.
I had haggis, neeps and tatties as a mains (nice, recommended - somewhat unusual with green peppercorns in the whisky sauce) and a seafood starter (small, not recommended at the price), along with a couple of well-kept beers. UKP 24 for the whole. Not cheap then.
Staff are friendly, unfussy and competent. It's an okay place. Would go there again if given the chance, which is not bloody likely though.
