The George in Rye, Rye, East Sussex - Explore & Book

"It takes an endless amount of history to make even a little tradition." Henry James may have been thinking of The George – or indeed drinking at The George – when he wrote this. The inn was established in the heart of medieval Rye at least 300 years before the author settled here in 1898, and has been drawing local custom ever since. Urban sophisticates flock here too, drawn by the top-notch hospitality and stunning interiors, extensively refurbished in 2022). It has a prime location on Rye's arty and charming High Street, while the wide-open Camber Sands are close by for outdoor frolics. At The George, new and old rub shoulders with flair: hip music wafts through the beamed Dragon Bar, while a 16th-century fire crackles in the corner. The enticing restaurant features walls of rust-coloured sail cloth, sociable sofas and banquettes, with Med-influenced bistro fare on the menu. The first-floor drawing room has a country house feel with its soft and sinkable seating, upholstered in green. This gives on to the breathtaking Georgian ballroom with elegant botanical murals, perfect for a big celebration. Best of all are the bedrooms - found within a warren of corridors, no two alike. An impeccable attention to comfort complements bold colours, statement wallpaper, mid-century furniture, wall-hangings, dreamy beds, and fine bathrooms. Eclectic and retro, this is style which delights. A fine hotel, in the best tradition – Henry would have approved. Highs The combination of olde English coaching inn and contemporary British style is terrific – characterful features include walls clad in recycled cheese palettesRooms are beautifully designed with retro touches. Luxe details include hand-made mattresses, Roberts radios and REN toiletriesThe buzzing restaurant serves tasty produce all day; afternoon tea is served in the oak-panelled ground-floor snugIn the heart of fascinating Rye, full of curiosities and collectablesFeel free to order breakfast in bed or a cocktail for when you're relaxing in the bath for maximum indulgence Lows Pricey, but the standard of design, detail and comfort warrants thisThere's no parking on-site; the hotel is located on Rye's High Street. Unload your bags first, then reception will guide you to a car park (about 5 minutes away)The medieval town of Rye has not entirely escaped the twee factor, and it can be teeming with tourists in the summer; you will need to book ahead during busy timesSome Cosy Rooms (and their bathrooms) are quite compact" - Nadine Mellor

"Expect neither a hidebound period re-creation nor a fashion-chasing lifestyle boutique from the George in Rye. This 400-plus-year-old coaching inn by the East Sussex seaside has been cleaned up and classed up just enough to suit the modern taste, while neither throwing the historical baby out with the newly renovated bathwater, nor needlessly altering the antique character of the place in pursuit of some idea of design-magazine sophistication." - Tablet Hotels

For a special birthday, this proved an ideal venue. Everyone was so delightful! It’s a beautiful old building, sensitively refurbished, and super comfy. Our room had its own small patio which was an added bonus. The place is a bit of a warren, ( my husband got lost trying to find the bar!) but that makes it more quirky. Breakfast was very good, with a super friendly helpful staff…but the same was true of the bar, reception and housekeeping team! We had such a wonderful few days. Thanks!

The George hotel in Rye offers a charming stay with a central location and helpful staff. The comfortable beds and a delicious breakfast were definite highlights. Its bar is also great, boasting a fantastic atmosphere. However, our (entry level) room was a little on the small side. Despite the cozy quarters, the hotel provides a very pleasant and enjoyable experience.

The hotel is in a fantastic location within a beautiful building. The room was small but cozy; however, if you’re above the street side of the building, be prepared for early morning noise starting around 6 a.m. The bar offers a good variety of drinks, though the service is quite slow due to inexperienced staff. That said, the bar area itself is warm and inviting, and the reception staff are friendly and helpful. The shower had great water pressure, which was a plus. The food was fairly average, so I’d recommend trying nearby options instead—The Fig is a great choice. Overall, a pleasant stay.

I recently stayed at The George in Rye with my partner on Sunday, September 21st to celebrate my birthday. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet expectations, and I feel it’s important to share our feedback. We arrived early and left our luggage with Reception, completing the check-in details in advance to save time later. On our return, we were greeted by Madeline, who showed us to Room 23. Although we had booked a Superior Room, it felt quite small, but we chose not to raise this initially. However, around half an hour later, another staff member, Harry, unexpectedly barged into the room without warning. He looked as surprised as we were and asked us to confirm our booking name before leaving abruptly. No explanation was given, and it was left to us to call Reception to query what had happened. Only then did Harry admit there had been a mistake with our room and apologise. About 10 minutes later, he returned to escort us to the correct room, Room 10. While this fixed the immediate issue, it was confusing, inconvenient, and not the professional service we expected. Later that evening, we ordered drinks at the hotel bar and charged them to our room. At check-out, however, there was still no acknowledgement or apology for the earlier mix-up. Only when we raised it ourselves were the drinks removed from the bill. The room itself also fell short in terms of cleanliness. One of the bathrobes provided had what appeared to be fake tan stains, and the bathroom in particular was disappointing. Breakfast the next morning, which we had pre-booked for 9:30am, was also a let-down. While we were seated promptly and given menus, the coffees we ordered took over 35 minutes to arrive - so long that we were already eating our cooked breakfasts by the time they appeared. Overall, from being placed in the wrong room, to the lack of communication, the cleanliness concerns, and the delays at breakfast, this stay was far below the standard we anticipated. What should have been a relaxed and enjoyable birthday break instead left us disappointed. Given the reputation of The George in Rye, we expected much better. We have emailed The George twice now and they have chosen not to even respond or acknowledge our upset.

This was the final night of our short holiday to Rye|The food was excellent and your staff were lovely. They were so welcoming and really did make it a very special night. Well done. |(The two Spanish members of staff were particularly kind and wonderful to engage with)|Thank you!

We had an overnight stay here, booked two rooms which were beautifully appointed, tasteful hotel interiors and extremely comfortable bedding. Breakfast was delicious. It is a gorgeous historic building, carefully restored and is part of Rye’s rich character and ancient streets. This must be taken into account if some people expect easy access. The staff were lovely as well. We loved our short stay here and will be back again with family.

Pleasant property but food and service a little lacking. On arrival we were told that we had not booked the breakfast plan and as we have been traveling for 3 weeks I assumed this was correct. The night before we left I was reviewing my confirmation I had in fact paid for breakfast. Thus we missed out on 2 x 2 paid breakfasts. We had lunch one day and the food was very average but served by a very friendly and dynamic restaurant manager. The room was very nice and the bathroom outstanding but beware the rooms that are ‘on the street side’ as the first delivery arrives before 6am !!

The staff were what made our experience at The George, what a wonderful team of welcoming, helpful and warm hearted people. The decoration and styling is beautiful, everywhere you turn there is another nook of design to explore. The rooms were beautiful and the beds so comfy. Breakfast was delicious. My one criticism, dinner was not amazing, and with only one vegetarian option. But we’ll be back, The George is well worth a return visit!

Yelp
My boyfriend picked this place out for the night after traveling from Bath, Rye is an awesome medieval town with cobblestone roads. George in Rye is just amazing! the staff is very wonderful and very accommodating towards their guests. The restaurant is amazing as well, everything we had for dinner and breakfast was so good! The charm and designs of the hotel are everything i love, it home-y and charming and elegant at the same time. I want to come back to Rye just to stay at the George in Rye! and maybe to see more of the town... If you're going to Rye, book a room at the George in Rye, you will NOT be disappointed!

Yelp
We were keeping our expectations moderate for The George. We'd heard only that the town of Rye was very cute, or if not that, quaint. Cute and quaint are all well and good but they call to mind slightly dusty hotel rooms stocked with ceramic angels and starving artist landscapes. Luckily for us, there wasn't a ceramic angel to be seen at The George. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that The George is as well-appointed and modern as any hotel my partner and I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Our room was spacious (almost ludicrously so, given the compactness of the town) and smartly decorated. The bathroom sports a beaten tin bathtub large enough to wash up a horse, and the shower is a walk-in with a powerful flow rate. The room has facilities for tea and a cafetiere, and the friendly staff will top up either if you're a prodigious drinker. My only quibble with The George is that the food in the restaurant isn't up to the standard of the hotel itself -- but Rye is so tiny that there's no reason why you can't stay at the George and walk down to the excellent Ship Inn or the local chippie for dinner.

Yelp
The old town of Rye is charming and picturesque. And right in the middle, on the High Street, is The George Hotel. It's a beautifully renovated town house. There is a restaurant, that serves good, locally sourced food, and a pub, with a large open fire and massive selection of ales and beers and wines. There is also a ballroom/banqueting hall for wedding receptions and New Years Eve's parties. The basic double rooms are quaint and cosy, with good size beds and exposed beams and painted paneling. There are several signature suites, some with four poster beds and roll top baths. All rooms come with lavender filler, knitted hearts on the pillows (which can be purchased) and wooded chests, filled with a selection of fine teas. Breakfast is served in a slightly sterile restaurant, which is a bit too much like a canteen. The pub is a much better location for a meal, and the restaurant allowed us to order, and then be seated in the pub at a huge wooden table by the open fire. The worst thing about The George is that some of the staff are rather young and inexperienced. There was a slight mix up with our room requests, and what was a simple error was treated like a major oversight and took way too long to remedy. But they are are all lovely people, and everything was sorted out in the end.

Yelp
Most beautiful little place! My brother and sister-in-law got married here in 2010 and we stayed for two nights. Rooms are stunning, food is delicious and staff are really friendly. The wedding went off perfectly. Have since been back with my husband for a delightful lunch and fell in love with the place again, the atmosphere is always cosy and welcoming. Can't wait to come back.
