This was one of the most fascinating museums I’ve ever been to. I saw something similar in Switzerland, where my daughter lives, but this one truly exceeded all expectations. Make sure to watch the film on the third floor — it was shot using the museum’s own exhibits and really takes you back in time. I recommend starting with it, but even if you see it later, it’s still a great experience. The biggest highlight is the staff. They don’t just share facts — they make history come alive. You can tell they really know and care, and it makes the visit even more special. Honestly, it’s the best museum I’ve visited. Even my husband listened with real interest when I told him about it — that’s a first! I didn’t have much money at the time, but I still highly recommend going. Thank you so much for what you do.

Great place, as National Trust members I'm not sure why we've not been before. Lots to see and we'll set out, interesting temporary exhibition too, the nursery is opening later in the year so we'll be back. Guides very knowledgeable and friendly

Google
Such an amazing place. Accidentally ended up here while being on my way to somewhere else but no regret at all. A big shout out especially to the volunteer guides. The way they tell stories about each room full of passion was really lovely. I was impressed how passionate each one speaks about each room. Also the lady at the cashier was super super friendly. The place it selves is also magnificent. Definitely an hidden gem in Edi. Somehow don’t understand how this is not yet in the top 10 on TripAdvisor, however the benefit is that it’s not overwhelmed with massa tourism which keeps the place in a lovely state. No regret at all and recommend it to everyone.

Visiting the Georgian House was such a lovely experience. Everything was beautifully restored, and it really felt like stepping back into the 18th century. Each room was set up with so much care. I especially loved the kitchen — it felt so real, like someone could still be cooking there! The whole visit was super enjoyable. The staff and volunteers were really friendly and knew so much, and their stories made everything even more interesting. Overall, it was a great experience and I’d totally recommend it to anyone who likes history or old buildings

Google
We had a really interesting couple of hours looking round this amazing home with everything in it like time has stood still. Everything was original, like going back in time There is also a good video talking about the Georgian House There is also a nice gift shop to buy something as a memory of your visit.

Yelp
An interesting visit. The museum gives you a sense of Edinburgh when the city expanded. The docents are knowledgeable and engaging, they bring the house to life! Be sure to watch the video at the start of your visit and spend time speaking with the docents in the dining room and kitchen.

Yelp
I had a fantastic afternoon at the Georgian house on Charlotte square. Staff were very welcoming upon arrival, suggested we start upstairs which was a bit tough, I'll be honest, I was huffing and puffing at the top. We sat down to watch the 15 min introduction film about the Lamont family, which was great, very informative and set the tone for the self guided tour of the house, however I found it a bit long and just wanted to explore as soon as possible. From this point on is where the magic happens, each room, from the bedchamber and its stunning four poster bed to the grand drawing room with the square piano and the magnificent dining room with a grand dining table and beautiful china. Downstairs you will see the bells summoning the servants, the kitchen, the wine cellar and the servants quarters. There is always staff in each room, like the gentleman in period costume which i loved, to point out things of interest and answer questions. Despite there being chamberpots in nearly every room, there are actual toilets for us modern folk and there is a fabulous gift shop and an opportunity to buy a Georgian house book at reception for £5 which we did and is worth purchasing. We all really enjoyed our visit, fantastic way to spend a rainy afternoon, it's somewhere I think I would enjoy going again.

Yelp
One of my favorite things to do when visiting old cities in Europe is to find a house just like this - something that allows me to experience what life was like years ago. While the Georgian House may not be as grand as some of the restored homes in Amsterdam or Milan, the details and the amazing staff are what make this place unforgettable. You should begin your tour on the second floor, taking 10 minutes or so to watch the video explaining a bit of history on the Lamont family and the house itself. Also, use the W/C up here while you're there. :) Then, head down to the first floor and visit the parlor and the drawing room. Here's where you'll find what makes the Georgian House so special - each room is staffed by a very knowledgeable and friendly staff member. She will provide details about the room, and all the contents therein - the artwork, the furnishings, the fireplace, the china, etc. Or, if you prefer, you can just help yourself to a laminated info piece... but, I really recommend allowing the staff member to assist. The women I spoke with were amazing, and really make the experience outstanding. You've still got two floors to visit: see the bedroom and dining room on the ground floor, and the kitchen and service quarters in the basement. Also, take a minute to pop into their gift shop, as the selection of books and gifts is fantastic, and the prices are very reasonable. Enjoy!

Yelp
I had a lot of fun in here! They offer student discount too. You can leave your bags with the staff, who are super helpful and lovely. Each room has a guide so you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and mingle with the experts. We were given a floor map and it was recommended that we start with the 15 minute film on the top floor, which really sets the scene of how the rich lived in the Georgian era. We went on to the activity room where you can dress up as a Georgian and have a go at writing using a quill. I got a little carried away in this room.. we proceeded to make our way through the house, such an amazing property. They have a lovely gift shop on site, I picked up a Christmas tree decoration from here as a keep sake. A Santa playing the bag pipes for under £5. Much cheaper that the touristy shops. They have a whole Christmas souvenir room :)

Yelp
If, like me, you have spent many hours of your life watching BBC adaptations of Jane Austen and harbour secret fantasies of flouncing around drawing rooms in floor length dresses, then the Georgian House is probably the best place to indulge your obsession. The National Trust have carefully restored the property with period furnishings and décor to make it resemble the original elegant townhouse, which really gives you an idea of how the New Town would have been when it was first built. There is an informative and mildly hilarious video that attempts to recreate the daily life of the Lamont family, the original owners, and, if you're an avid fan of late eighteenth century furnishings, an expert loiters in each room waiting to ply you with historical information. The Georgian House a rather gentle visitor attraction and seems mostly to attract well to-do old ladies, but it is a pleasant place to while away a few hours and imaginatively immerse yourself in a bygone age.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit to this lovely period house -- it's done up very well, with informational materials available in each room and very eager volunteers who want to tell you things about the house and the period. The short video is worth watching - well acted and cute in a BBC historical drama sort of way. The house is absolutely stunning - and it is kept clean and tidy. Even the bathrooms -- added for us tourists & visitors -- have important information about environmental friendliness and conservation. Definitely a worthwhile stop - if you are driving a car, you can find decent neighborhood parking a bit further east (maybe a 10 minute walk to Georgian house) that is way cheaper than parking in the city center.

Yelp
If you are a fan of old houses and period furnishings like I am, then the Georgian House has to be on your list of things to see when in Edinburgh. Since many of the row houses have been split and are being used for things other than residences these days, the Georgian House reminds us of a time gone by. . .and what life might have been like for a wealthy family in the New Town of Edinburgh back in the 1800's. First stop, is in the basement to view a video of the Lamont family who lived in the house. it sets the stage for what you are going to see as you work your way through the various rooms. While parts of it are laughable, they have done a good job in showing you it through the eyes of those who might have lived in the house. Each of the rooms has a guide who will share with you information about what you are seeing. On the day we were there- the woman in the kitchen would hardly let us leave before she showed us everything there was to see- so enthusiastic! The first floor has been finished as was the ballroom on the 2nd floor. And if you bring the kids- there is even a "playroom" where the kids can do some light crafts or spend time dressing in the period costumes of the day. You won't spend all day here so you may want to buy the National Trust Heritage pass which will let you into the castle, the Georgian house and other historic sites around Edinburgh at a reduced rate. Perfect if you are spending a few days sight seeing! If you love history, especially the history of homes, check out the Georgian House. It is a well done restoration. . . . just watch out for that woman in the kitchen or you may be there all day!

Yelp
Very informative and interesting. No guided tours - but there are guides in each room. Highlights the decadence of the Georgian period alongside the lack of modern technology - which is posh yet hilarious.

Yelp
This beautifully restored house in Edinburgh's New Town is just a pleasure to look at and walk through. It's part of my greater life plan to buy and restore a castle (I'm ambitious...) and the decor of Georgian House is just want I had in mind. There are wonderful and especially pricey-looking paintings hung generously on its walls, lavishly upholstered furniture and period dressed servants (some people call them guides) to tell you a little bit about the house. The main aim of the house is to give the visitor some insight into the way 18th century New Town inhabitants lived, which according to my observations was quite well indeed. If you've got time, it's definitely worth seeing a video they show, which further rubs in just how opulently the families of that time lived.

Yelp
The National Trust for Scotland operates the historic Georgian House in Edinburgh. The house is located on Charlotte Square, close to the center of Edinburgh. It's a fine example of Georgian era homes, dating back to the late 1700s and early 1800s. I've always enjoyed viewing historic homes, be they Monticello, Clayton, Mt. Vernon, and the Hermitage. I like learning how people lived through their furnishings, toys, games, costumes, and fashions. Here at the Georgian House, I was fascinated by the period furniture, porcelain, silver and glass. Like a lot of historic homes, we got a chance to be transported back to the past. The docents here are in full costume and they stay in character to answer questions about what life was like at the house and in New Town circa 1800. Methinks they hired local actors because they played their parts so well. They also have something great for the little ones here. Kids can try on period costumes, try their hands at everyday items like writing with quill pens and playing with period toys, and work on art and coloring projects. Makes me wish I was a kid again! They appear to host a lot of events here and the drawing room can be rented out for private parties. If you're one for historic houses, put this one on your list.

Yelp
This house is a National Trust of Scotland property, it is set in a georgian square that was desinged by rober adam and you still think that a carriage is going to drop off some ladies in bustling dresses. It is set up as a house would have been seen in the georgian era an upper class house with fine furniture porcelain and silver. The house can be hired for weddings with reception set in the drawing room. Its a nice place to visit if your in Edinburgh but would make a lovely setting for a wedding. It is £5 entry fee so a little expensive considering that there are so many free places to see in Edinburgh but okay if you have done the free places and are looking for something else to do.

Yelp
A Georgian House that will stay with you in memory, unlike Gladstones land. A really well put together exhibition with lots to see. The house was designed by the architect Robert Adam and sits in Charlotte Square, very swanky. It starts with a film that takes you through the life of the Lamont family who was the chief of the Clan Lamont. Fab facts and story to give you an insight in to what to expect to see in the house. The furnishings, artworks and vast collection of household items re-creates the lifestyle of a wealthy family as well as giving an insight into the social and economic conditions of the time. If in Edinburgh town please take the opportunity of seeing this interesting house. Xoxo

Yelp
This was a cool experience. There is a short movie that sets the tone before you tour the house. On one floor they allow you to dress up in clothing that the original owners would have worn in the 1700's. My favorite areas were the dining room and kitchen. Fascinating look at life in another era.

Yelp
I have a craze about Georgian houses and Georgian architecture as a whole. After visiting a couple of such houses in Dublin, I stepped in the museum with sheer thrill. To my surprise the house looked more like a townhouse, rather small. The typical big rooms and crazy interior design was not there. I expected to find out a richer atmosphere although the family that had owned the house last must have come from upper class lawyer or state clerk, or God knows what profession. The staff are kind but do not allow to bring in any backpacks or lumpy bags. The annoying bit is that you have to drop them next to the reception desk because there are no lockers or wardrobe and there is no guarantee for safety - you leave your luggage at your own risk.

Yelp
Go! Worth every penny! A wonderful wealth of information, furniture, household goods and artwork. All in a gorgeous Georgian era house. The kitchen especially was amazing. All of it was amazing! Knowledgeable volunteers in every room to answer questions. And a really good film that showed the lifestyle of the period.

Yelp
Excellent fun for the whole family. Good for locals and tourists alike. The New Town is a really interesting achievement in architecture and rationality of design but it can be a bit unknowable as an actual place where people lived. What was it like? What sort of person chose the hinterlands of the New Town over the well-lived-in Old Town? This museum answers those questions. Staff were wonderful, furnishings were really good and children's activities were excellent too. I advise trying to schedule a visit with kids for when one of the kid events is on. Also, see the film shown in the basement level about the house. Will go again.
